Amid the countrywide protests against Citizenship Amendment Act, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took a jibe at oppoisition as he said parties discarded by people in elections are left with one weapon and that is to "spead misinformation". "There are people who dislike the principles which guide us. Our problems aren't because we're doing something wrong, it's because people of this country are blessing us. Those rejected by the public in elections are left with very few weapons, one of them is, spread misinformation," PM Modi said. PM Modi was speaking at the facilitation programme at the BJP office in Delhi after senior leader JP Nadda was elected as unopposed national president of the party, replacing Amit Shah. Protests broke out in different parts of the country against and in support of CAA which grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and who came to India on or before December 31, 2014. The Act came into effect on January 10 despite the protests which are still underway in many parts of the country. The Bill was passed by Lok Sabha on December 10, 2019. A day before, it was introduced in Lok Sabha, and a day later it was passed in Rajya Sabha. Earlier this month also, PM Modi had hit out at the Opposition, as he accued them of playing political games over the amended Citizenship law and asserted that the act is about giving citizenship rights, not taking them away. "I repeat again, Citizenship act is not to revoke anyone's citizenship, but it is to give citizenship. After independence, Mahatma Gandhi ji and other big leaders of the time all believed that India should give citizenship to persecuted religious minorities of Pakistan," he had said.

The people of Myanmar are eagerly awaiting the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping, which will bring relations between the two countries closer under the Belt and Road Initiative. So, China's influence over Myanmar impacts on India?

The book, "A Very Stable Genius" by Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig, highlights episodes of volatile behaviour by the president along with his ignorance of basic geography and history.

"It's not like you've got China on your border," the authors quoted Trump as telling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting between the two leaders.

India and China share a border and the two countries went to war in 1962 over a disputed Himalayan section of the frontier.

Following Trump's border comment and seeming dismissal of the threat China poses to India, "Modi's eyes bulged out in surprise," according to the book, excerpts of which were published in the Post on Wednesday.

After the meeting, "the Indians took a step back" in their diplomatic relations with the United States, a Trump aide told the authors.

The book also recounts a tour by Trump of a memorial for the USS Arizona, a US warship that was sunk by Japanese planes in the December 7, 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbour.

"Hey, John, what's this all about? What's this a tour of?" Trump is quoted as asking his then-chief of staff John Kelly.

"Trump had heard the phrase 'Pearl Harbor' and appeared to understand that he was visiting the scene of a historic battle, but he did not seem to know much else," the book said.

The book said Trump lobbied then secretary of state Rex Tillerson in 2017 to help get rid of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act which prevents US firms from bribing foreign officials for business deals.

"It's just so unfair that American companies aren't allowed to pay bribes to get business overseas," Trump is quoted as saying. "We're going to change that."

The book also recounts an exchange between Trump and Anthony Scaramucci, who served briefly as White House communications director and is now a fierce critic of the president.

Scaramucci said he once asked Trump, "Are you an act?"

Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of an event in Delhi.

According to the report, both leaders held a discussion on India-Iran bilateral ties, trade and economic cooperation. Zarif and PM Modi also talked about regional and international issues

Prior to the meeting with PM Modi, Zarif also met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

During his address at the conclave, Zarif targetted the US over its air raid which killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Iraq earlier this month.

He said that US President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo and the Islamic State are "celebrating" the death of Soleimani.

"The US looks at things from their perspective, not from the perspective of this region. The killing of Qassem Soleimani shows ignorance and arrogance. 430 Indian cities saw protests against the killing of Soleimani," he said.

Talking about Iran's airstrikes at two military bases in Iraq, Zarif maintained that Tehran retaliated in "self-defence" and rebuffed Washington's claims that Soleimani was planning to attack US embassies.

Soleimani, the head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards' elite Quds Force, was killed in a US drone strike ordered by President Donald Trump at Baghdad International Airport on January 3.

Days later, Tehran retaliated by firing a barrage of missiles at two US military bases in Iraq.

Soleimani's death has marked a dramatic escalation in tension between the US and Iran, that has often been at a fever pitch since Trump, in 2018, chose to unilaterally withdraw Washington from the 2015 nuclear pact the world powers had struck with Tehran.

Countries including the UK and India have urged Iran to pursue urgent de-escalation.

Fanned by soaring temperatures, columns of fire and smoke blackened entire towns on Monday and Tuesday, forcing thousands of residents and holidaymakers to seek shelter on beaches. Many stood in shallow water to escape the flames. In total, there have been 12 fire-related deaths across Australia since blazes broke out a few months ago, including three volunteer firefighters, after a three-year drought in large parts of the nation created tinder-dry conditions. Huge bushfires have destroyed more than 4 million hectares (10 million acres) -- an area larger than Japan -- and new blazes are sparked almost daily by extremely hot and windy conditions and, most recently, dry lightning strikes created by the fires themselves. Cooler conditions on Wednesday gave the country a moment to count the cost of the fires, although there were still more than 100 blazes in New South Wales (NSW) state alone and thousands of firefighters on the ground. The body of a man was found on Wednesday on the south coast of New South Wales after emergency workers began reaching the most damaged areas, according to the state's Rural Fire Service (RFS). PM Modi lauds MPs for 'record-breaking' Parliament sessions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that India is quite advanced in the field of astronomy and has taken path-breaking initiatives in the field.

Talking about the solar eclipse which took place on December 26, the Prime Minister read a message that he got from someone named Ripun, who had urged the Prime Minister to talk about the subject.

"India is quite ahead in the field of astronomy and our initiatives are path-breaking. We have a giant meter-wave telescope near Pune. Not just that, in Kodaikkaanal, Udagamandala, Guru Shikhar and Hanle Ladakh as well, powerful telescopes are located," the Prime Minister said during his monthly "Mann ki Baat" programme.

The Prime Minister said: "Like my countrymen, especially the youth among them, I too was eager to watch the solar eclipse on December 26. But unfortunately, clouds in skies in Delhi prevented me from enjoying the sight. Though, I did get to see beautiful pictures of the solar eclipse that was visible in Kozhikode and some other parts of India."

Stressing that astronomy has an ancient and glorious history in the country, Modi further said that our connection with the twinkling stars in the sky is as old as our civilisation.

"Many of you might be aware that at various places in India, there are magnificent observatories or Jantar Mantars, which are worth seeing. Who doesn't know about the prodigious talent of the great Aryabhatta? During his career, he expounded in great detail about the solar eclipse as well as the lunar eclipse," he said.

"In 2016, the then Prime Minister of Belgium and I had inaugurated the 3.6-metre Devasthal optical telescope in Nainital. It is said to be Asia's largest telescope. ISRO has an astronomical satellite called Astrosat. ISRO is planning to launch a satellite called Aditya, to study the sun," he added.

Though, I did get to see beautiful pictures of the solar eclipse that was visible in Kozhikode and some other parts of India." Stressing that astronomy has an ancient and glorious history in the country, Modi further said that our connection with the twinkling stars in the sky is as old as our civilisation.
