Our search for exoplanets continues. With the help of latest technology, we have been building powerful telescopes that can not only scan the skies for what's visible, but also those that can pinpoint developments in lights that are not visible to human eyes. Till now, 5084 extrasolar planets have been confirmed. 3,811 planetary systems outside our Solar System have been found. What's more, there are another 8912 candidates awaiting confirmation.

But it has been for the first time that scientists have made a 3D structure of binary system with a planet.

A binary system involves two stars who orbit each other. Binary system can also have planets revolving around one or both the stars.

In a recently concluded study, an international team of astronomers made use of National Science Foundation's (NSF) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) network to detect a Jupiter-like planet in a binary system (GJ 896AB). The binary system is just 20 light-years away from Earth.

The team used a technique called astrometry to detect the planet. The same method allowed thes scientists to create 3-dimensional architecture of the system.&nbsp;

The team of researchers was led by Salvador Curiel Ramirez.&nbsp;

Ramirez is a researcher with the Institute of Astronomy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His colleagues from UNAM were also part of the team. In addition to this, researchers with the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIFR) and National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO)

The research paper has been published in The Astronomical Journal.&nbsp;

Scientists have made first 3D model of planet orbiting binary star system

As India celebrates 75 years of independence, Space Kidz India raised the Indian flag roughly 30 kilometres above the earth.

The flag was carried to an altitude of 1,06,000 feet above the Earth aboard a balloon, where it was unfurled.

The event was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav slogan to commemorate the momentous milestone.

Space Kidz India is an organisation creating "young scientists for the country and spreading awareness among children for a borderless world."&nbsp;

The satellite was just launched into Low Earth Orbit by the organisation. AzadiSAT was created by 750 female students from across India to commemorate India's 75th anniversary of independence.

While the satellite was lost owing to orbital concerns as the Tiny Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) that sent it into space failed to position it in a circular orbit around the globe, the organisation was successful in developing an ecosystem and a procedure for developing small spacecraft.

Messages from space have been pouring in as India celebrates its Independence Day. In a video message, Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, who is living and working on the International Space Station, said in a video message that it is a pleasure to congratulate India on 75 years of independence and that for decades, international agencies have collaborated with the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) on many space and science missions.

Raja Chari, an Indian-American astronaut, also uploaded a photo of the Indian flag in the International Space Station this morning.

"On Indian Independence eve I'm reminded of Indian diaspora that I could see from @Space_Station where my immigrant father's home town of Hyderabad shines bright. @nasa is just 1 place Indian Americans make a difference every day. Looking forward to @IndianEmbassyUS celebration," he said in a tweet.

Now, because of the research carried out in a university in Mexico, we now know how to determine whether there are planets revolving around dead binary stars. Dr. Carlos Chavez, from the Universidad Autónoma De Nuevo León in Mexico is the lead author of this study.

The focus of this study was Cataclysmic Variables (CVs), type of binary stars which are so close to each other that the bigger star draws material from the smaller one while they revolve around each other.

In CVs, the bigger star (primary) is generally a white dwarf while the smaller star (donor) is a red dwarf. primary star draws material from the donor star.

As the the material is drawn, it forms a heated disc around the stars called 'accretion disc'.

In such a binary star system, there is point of gravitational equillibrium. This is called Lagrangian Point.

If a planet is present in this star system, it causes oscillations in the Lagrangian Point. This in turn, causes changes in the luminosity of the star system. Researchers say that by detecting changes in luminosity, it can be determined if a planet is present or not.

The research has been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Climate Change and global warming are daunting realities we all face. Even if you are someone who doesn't really believe in these, the reality is hard to deny. Draughts, floods, wildfires, and heatwaves are all proof it is happening. So what can we do to delay the inevitable?

China's Tianwen-1 successfully reached the Red Planet in February 2021 on the country's inaugural mission there. A robotic rover has since been deployed on the surface as an orbiter surveyed the planet from space.

Among the images taken from space were China's first photographs of the Martian south pole, where almost all of the planet's water resources are locked.

In 2018, an orbiting probe operated by the European Space Agency had discovered water under the ice of the planet's south pole.

Chinese spacecraft acquires images of entire planet of Mars

The discovery was made as a result of the first clear picture of the chemistry beneath the opaque outer atmosphere of the largest planet, according to a study that was published online in the journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

At the heart of the system lies a small and cool M-dwarf star, named HD 260655, and astronomers have found that it hosts at least two terrestrial, Earth-sized planets.

However, the planets are likely not habitable, as their orbits are relatively tight, exposing the planets to temperatures that are too high to sustain liquid surface water, the astronomers from MIT who made the discovery said.

The inner plant orbits its star every 2.8 Earth days and is about 1.2 times the size of Earth and twice as massive. The other orbits every 5.7 Earth days and is 1.5 times the size of Earth and three times as massive. They have both been described considered "rocky."

Nevertheless, the latest discovery has caused excitement among the scientific community as it will help them understand what this neighbourhood looks like.

It will also give them a closer look at the properties of the planets and signs of any atmosphere they might hold.

“Both planets in this system are each considered among the best targets for atmospheric study because of the brightness of their star," said Michelle Kunimoto, a postdoc in MIT's Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research and one of the discovery's lead scientists.

"Is there a volatile-rich atmosphere around these planets? And are there signs of water or carbon-based species? These planets are fantastic test beds for those&nbsp;explorations."

Scientists find multiplanet system that hosts two Earth-type planets just 33 light years away

A star when alive and kicking, can literally be life-giver in its planetary system. Take for example the Solar System. The Sun created the planetary system, and endowed Earth with life itself. The planets peacefully revolve around the star and everything is somewhat alright.

But astronomers have now observed a dead star who is involved in what is being called 'cosmic cannibalism. The dead star is ripping apart its own planetary system.

The star is called G238-44. It is a White Dwarf star. Normal star the size of our Sun, on completion of its life, becomes a White Dwarf.

However, prior to becoming a White Dwarf, such star becomes Red Giant. In this phase, it expands rapidly and disrupts orbits of the planets revolving around it. This sends them on a haywire path.

What's happening, in this case, is that the planets are disintegrating due to the tidal forces of the White Dwarf. The result is total chaos with planetary material falling onto the White Dwarf star.

We may get to witness this cosmic process from afar but 5 billion years in future when&nbsp;the Solar System will meet the same fate.

"When a star like our Sun expands into a bloated red giant late in its life, it will shed mass by puffing off its outer layers. One consequence of this can be the gravitational scattering of small objects like asteroids, comets, and moons by any remaining large planets. Like pinballs in an arcade game, the surviving objects can be thrown into highly eccentric orbits," says NASA on its website.

"...5 billion years from now. Earth might be completely vaporized along with the inner planets. But the orbits of many of the asteroids in the main asteroid belt will be gravitationally perturbed by Jupiter and will eventually fall onto the white dwarf that the remnant Sun will become."

A star when alive and kicking, can literally be life-giver in its planetary system. Take for example the Solar System. The Sun created the planetary system, and endowed Earth with life itself. The planets peacefully revolve around the star and everything is somewhat alright. But astronomers have now observed a dead star who is involved in what is being called 'cosmic cannibalism. The dead star is ripping apart its own planetary system. The star is called G238-44. It is a White Dwarf star. Normal star the size of our Sun, on completion of its life, becomes a White Dwarf. However, prior to becoming a White Dwarf, such star becomes Red Giant. In this phase, it expands rapidly and disrupts orbits of the planets revolving around it. This sends them on a haywire path. What's happening, in this case, is that the planets are disintegrating due to the tidal forces of the White Dwarf. The result is total chaos with planetary material falling onto the White Dwarf star. We may get to witness this cosmic process from afar but 5 billion years in future when the Solar System will meet the same fate. "When a star like our Sun expands into a bloated red giant late in its life, it will shed mass by puffing off its outer layers. One consequence of this can be the gravitational scattering of small objects like asteroids, comets, and moons by any remaining large planets. Like pinballs in an arcade game, the surviving objects can be thrown into highly eccentric orbits," says NASA on its website. "...5 billion years from now. Earth might be completely vaporized along with the inner planets. But the orbits of many of the asteroids in the main asteroid belt will be gravitationally perturbed by Jupiter and will eventually fall onto the white dwarf that the remnant Sun will become."

The star is estimated to be around two million years old, which is the age of our solar system when planet formation was underway. Important to note that the solar system's age is currently 4.6 billion years.&nbsp;

Scientists found that a gas giant orbiting unusually far from its young host star. Gas giants are planets composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, with swirling gases surrounding a smaller solid core.&nbsp;

To the study planet, researchers used the Subaru Telescope located near the summit of an inactive Hawaiian volcano and the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope.&nbsp;

Astrophysicist Thayne Currie of the Subaru Telescope and the NASA-Ames Research Center, said, "We think it is still very early on in its 'birthing' process. Evidence suggests that this is the earliest stage of formation ever observed for a gas giant."&nbsp;

Scientists have claimed that the newly forming planet, called AB Aurigae b, is probably about nine times more massive than Jupiter.&nbsp;

AB Aurigae b orbits its host star at a whopping distance of 8.6 billion miles. that is over two times farther than Pluto is from our Sun.&nbsp;

While speaking to BBC, he said, "This is the first time that anything has been seen in the habitable zone of a white dwarf. And thus there is a possibility of life on another world orbiting it."

As of now, the researchers do not have concrete evidence of the planet's existence.&nbsp;

They claim that the movements of 65 Moon-sized structures orbiting the white dwarf's habitable zone hint towards its existence.&nbsp;

Prof Farihi said, "It was a shock to the team. The motion was so eerily precise you couldn't make this stuff up."

The exoplanet search and study group at the Ahmedabad-based Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), has discovered a new exoplanet orbiting too close to an evolved or aging star with a mass of 1.5 times that of Sun and located 725 light years away, according to Indian Space Research Organisation.

This discovery was made using PRL Advanced Radial-velocity Abu-sky Search (PARAS) optical fiber-fed spectrograph, the first of its kind in India, on the 1.2 metre Telescope of PRL at its Mt. Abu Observatory, the Bengaluru-headquartered space agency said in a statement. Using PARAS, which has the capability to measure mass of an exoplanet, the exoplanet's mass is found to be 70 per cent and size about 1.4 times that of the Jupiter, it said.&nbsp;

These measurements were carried out between December 2020 and March 2021. Further follow-up measurements were also obtained from TCES spectrograph from Germany in April 2021, and also independent photometric observations from the PRL's 43-cm telescope at Mt. Abu.&nbsp;

The star is known as HD 82139 as per the Henry Draper catalogue and TOI 1789 as per the TESS catalogue. Hence, the planet is known as TOI 1789b or HD 82139b as per the IAU nomenclature.

The discovery team led by Prof. Abhijit Chakraborty, includes students and team members, and international collaborators from Europe and the US. This newly discovered star-planet system is very unique -- the planet orbits the host star in just 3.2 days, thus placing it very-very close to the star at a distance of 0.05 AU (roughly one tenth the distance between Sun and Mercury).There are less than 10 such close-in systems known among the zoo of exoplanets known so far.

Because of the close proximity of the planet to its host star, it is extremely heated with a surface temperature reaching up to 2000 K, and hence an inflated radius, making it one of the lowest density planets known (density of 0.31 gram per cc), it was noted.

Such close-in exoplanets around stars (with distance less than 0.1 AU) with masses between 0.25 to a few Jupiter mass are called "Hot-Jupiters". "The detection of such system enhances our understanding of various mechanisms responsible for inflation in hot-Jupiters and the formation and evolution of planetary systems around evolving and aging stars", ISRO said. "This asteroid has visited Earth at a much closer distance of 19 lakh km and 29 lakh km in 1935 and 1977 respectively. At that time, it flew away and never came towards Earth. This time it is around 45 lakh km, which is about 11 to 12 times the Earth-Moon distance, so there is no danger of hitting Earth," he added.

As per Pattnaik, 2008 GO20 will be closest to Earth on Sunday at 11:21pm Indian Standard Time (IST).&nbsp;

Astronomers have known since 2006 that the star PDS 70 is surrounded by a very large ring of material but limitations on the observational equipment only allowed them to guess at the presence of a planet between the star and the ring.&nbsp;

"Our ALMA observations were obtained at such exquisite resolution that we could clearly identify that the disc is associated with the planet, and we are able to constrain its size for the first time,"&nbsp;the study's lead author Myriam Benisty said in a press release.

Both planets discovered in the system hold major interest for researchers because they belong to a young star system.

The star PDS 70 is 5.4 million years old -- a spring chicken compared to our Sun, which has been around for 4.6 billion years.

"More than 4,000 exoplanets" -- planets outside our solar system -- "have been found until now, but all of them were detected in mature systems," she said in the press release.
