This is very recent and geologically, the scientists have still not observed any volcanic activity actually taking place.&nbsp;

However, somewhere on Mars, this might exist as per recent studies.&nbsp;

More than 12,000 simulations were run by the researchers to understand what can happen if a star passes within 100 astronomical units (about 9.3 billion miles) from Earth.

After creating the simulations, the scientists observed that the solar system is remarkably stable. In around 92 per cent of cases, it was observed that the solar system would remain almost intact even if a star passed by the solar system. 
 
"I thought more would happen," said Sean Raymond, who is a study author from the University of Bordeaux in France, while speaking to New Scientist. "It's really not that easy to mess with planets' orbits – a star has to get really into another star's business to mess with its planets,” he added.

<h2>A slim chance to save Earth</h2>

In a blog post, Raymond said, “Still, there's a chance the passing star could pull our planet out of harm's way – albeit a slim one. In 0.28 per cent of the simulations, the star pulled the Earth out of its orbit and into a more temperate region.” 
 
In a few simulations, Earth remained inside the solar system, however, the planet was pulled to a region beyond Pluto which is about 10 per cent cooler compared to our current orbit. 
 
In other simulations, the planet was pushed into interstellar space and it got placed in the Oort cloud which is around 2 billion light years away, or became a free-floating planet in space. 
 
In the blog post, Raymon said, “As bizarre as it might seem, this may not be the worst-case scenario. It is much harder to un-roast a fried planet than to heat up a frozen world.”

McLeod and his teammates were hinted about the existence of this system when a jet emerging from a forming star was spotted by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). 
 
The instrument is able to make observations in the visible wavelength range as well as measure the wavelengths of light which are getting emitted from the object. "We discovered a jet being launched from this young massive star, and its presence is a signpost for ongoing disc accretion," said McLeod.

The scientists measured the movement of dense gas around the star to confirm that an accretion disk is present in HH 1177.

"The frequency of light changes depending on how fast the gas emitting the light is moving towards or away from us," said team member and Liverpool John Moores University research fellow Jonathan Henshaw.

However, the lead&nbsp;author of the new study in The Astronomical Journal and Caltech/IPAC research scientist Jessie Christiansen said that “scientists have now confirmed the detection of over 5,000 exoplanets, but there are fewer planets than expected with a diameter between 1.5 and 2 times that of Earth."&nbsp;

“Exoplanet scientists have enough data now to say that this gap is not a fluke. There’s something going on that impedes planets from reaching and/or staying at this size," Christiansen added.&nbsp;

Atomic oxygen is found in abundance at high altitude places on Earth where it is created through the photodissociation of molecular oxygen. In this process, atmospheric O2 is broken into two parts by solar photons. 
 
It is believed that a similar process takes place on the planet Venus. The atmosphere of Venus is predominantly filled with carbon dioxide and when the sunlight hits this CO2, the molecules are broken into atomic oxygen and carbon monoxide by photodissociation.

The research, led by Matthew B. Weller, a planetary scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, indicated that both Earth and Venus likely experienced plate tectonics during a similar time period.

Reports quoting the study said that the geological processes related to plate tectonics might have hidden away a substantial amount of the carbon dioxide responsible for the current scorching conditions on Venus.

According to Dr. Weller, this information opens up the possibility that billions of years ago, Venus might have been a place where life could have thrived.

The presence of plate tectonics implied that Venus would have been "cooler&nbsp;and then there would have been more liquid water,"&nbsp;Dr. Weller said.&nbsp;

Rather than identifying visible surface features like the San Andreas fault, the researchers focused on the composition of the atmosphere, specifically nitrogen.

When rocky planets such as Earth and Venus form, nitrogen gets trapped in minerals. However, during volcanic eruptions, these minerals melt, breaking chemical bonds and allowing nitrogen to escape into the atmosphere, where it remains.

Dr. Weller explained that nitrogen serves as a diagnostic tool for deciphering a planet's tectonic history.

To reach their conclusions, Dr. Weller and his colleagues from Brown University and Purdue University employed computer simulations to explore two tectonic models.

The first, known as the "stagnant lid," applies to worlds like Mars and the Earth's moon, where the outer crust forms a solid, immobile shell, trapping most gases beneath it.

Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array of telescopes (ALMA) has been used by researchers in Chile to observe the PDS 70 system which is located at a distance of 370 light-years from the Centaurus constellation. 
 
Astronomers are already aware of two Jupiter-like planets, which are called PDS 70c and PDS 70b, orbiting the star. However, they have spied a cloud of debris in the orbital path of PDS 70b which can represent a new planet's building blocks which is actively forming or already formed. 
 
The scientists feel that the planet's direct image may be the strongest evidence to date which shows that the two exoplanets can possibly share the exact same orbit. A study, in which the findings were mentioned in detail, was published in the journal Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics on Wednesday (July 19).

“Two decades ago it was predicted in theory that pairs of planets of similar mass may share the same orbit around their star, the so-called Trojan or co-orbital planets. For the first time, we have found evidence in favour of that idea,” stated lead study author Olga Balsalobre-Ruza, who is a postdoctoral student of astrophysics at Madrid’s Centre for Astrobiology, in a statement.

<h2>What are Trojans?</h2>

The rocky space bodies which exist within the same orbit just like planets are called Trojans. Such phenomena are commonly found in all solar systems, which include a couple of them in Earth’s orbit and more than 12,000 Trojan asteroids which exist in the orbit of Jupiter as it moves around the sun. 
 
NASA’s Lucy mission, which was launched by the space agency in October 2021, will be the first to carry out a of study these never-before-seen asteroids from close. Till now, there has been sparse evidence of Trojans beyond our solar system, especially Trojan planets. 
 
“Exotrojans (Trojan planets outside the Solar System) have so far been like unicorns: they are allowed to exist by theory but no one has ever detected them,” stated study coauthor Jorge Lillo-Box, who is a researcher at the Centre for Astrobiology, in a statement.

Astronomers discover rare Trojan which may share orbit with Jupiter-like planet

Astronomers said on Monday (July 10) that a scorching hot world where metal clouds rain titanium is the most reflective planet ever observed outside our solar system. This fascinating and strange world is more than 260 light years away from Earth. It reflects 80 per cent of the light it gets from its host star. The observations have been made by Europe's exoplanet-probing Cheops space telescope.

The discovery makes the exoplanet comparably shiny as Venus which is the brightest object in the night sky after the Moon.

The planet, first discovered in 2020, is the size of Neptune. This means it is considerably bigger than Earth. The planet has been called LTT9779b. It orbits its star in just 19 hours.

Because of its very close proximity to its star, the planet's side which faces the star has a temperature of 2000 degrees Celsius. This temperature is considered far too hot for clouds to form.

Yet LTT9779b seems to have them.

"It was really a puzzle," said Vivien Parmentier, a researcher at France's Cote d'Azur Observatory and co-author of a new study in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. Parmentier was quoted by AFP.

The researchers then "realised we should think about this cloud formation in the same way as condensation forming in a bathroom after a hot shower," he said in a statement.

Like running hot water steams up a bathroom, a scorching stream of metal and silicate -- the stuff of which glass is made -- oversaturated LTT9779b's atmosphere until metallic clouds formed, he said.

<h2>Surviving 'Neptune desert'</h2>

The planet, which is around five times the size of Earth, is an outlier in other ways.

But LTT9779b lives in a region called the "Neptune desert", where planets its size are not supposed to be found.

"It's a planet that shouldn't exist," Parmentier said.

"We expect planets like this to have their atmosphere blown away by their star, leaving behind bare rock."

The metallic clouds 'act like a mirror' and reflect away light, thus preventing the atmosphere from being blown away, as per Cheops project scientist Maximilian Guenther.

"It's a bit like a shield, like in those old Star Trek films where they have shields around their ships," he told AFP.

Astronomers discover most reflective planet that's 'like a mirror'

In a twist to the saga of whether there is the possibility of life on Venus, Jane Greaves, who has been leading a team of scientists at Cardiff University in Wales, revealed that they have discovered the presence of phosphine the atmosphere of the planet, deeper than where they had spotted it before. 
 
Greaves made the statement while speaking at the Royal Astronomical Society's National Astronomy Meeting 2023 in Cardiff this week. In September 2020, his team of scientists had reported the detection of phosphine in the clouds of Venus, which can be a possible indicator of life.

Greaves and her colleagues, with the use of the James Clark Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) at the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii, delved deeper into the planet's atmosphere, down to the top and even the middle of the clouds present on Venus. 
 
The team believed that phosphine could be emerging from the lower level of the atmosphere on the planet. Greaves said that microorganisms that live in a very low-oxygen environment on Earth generate phosphine.

<h2>‘When all hell broke loose’ after hint of life on Venus</h2>

She stated that phosphine is not created through any other process on our planet, because of their lack of abundance of "loose" hydrogen on Earth. This theory suggests that the presence of phosphine in other worlds is a potential biosignature. 
 
This is the reason why the discovery of phosphine on Venus caused a stir three years ago. However, just the presence of phosphine in the atmosphere of Venus doesn't necessarily mean that the planet is hosting life. 
 
"There’s a big school of thought that you can make phosphine by lobbing phosphorus-bearing rocks up into the high atmosphere and kind of eroding them with water and acid and stuff and getting phosphine gas," said Greaves, during the meeting. 
 
The scientist talked about how the search for phosphine was prompted in the atmosphere of Venus and how that led to the first hint of life on the planet.

She stated that the decision of investigating Venus was taken after a study of other planets like Saturn and improved telescope technology made way for the probing of the atmospheres of smaller planets. 
 
"I vaguely remembered Venus is supposed to have this potential habitat in the high clouds, which is anaerobic, and we eventually got telescope time, so I thought, 'Why don’t we have a very quick look and see if there are some phosphates in Venus clouds, an analogue to things living on the surface of the Earth?'" said Greaves, adding, "Astonishingly, we found it, and all hell broke loose!"

This theory suggests that the presence of phosphine in other worlds is a potential biosignature. This is the reason why the discovery of phosphine on Venus caused a stir three years ago. However, just the presence of phosphine in the atmosphere of Venus doesn't necessarily mean that the planet is hosting life. "There’s a big school of thought that you can make phosphine by lobbing phosphorus-bearing rocks up into the high atmosphere and kind of eroding them with water and acid and stuff and getting phosphine gas," said Greaves, during the meeting. However, a study released by Brussels-based Transport &amp; Environment, which is a clean transport campaign group, emphasised that not enough animals get slaughtered every year to meet the growing demand of airlines for animal fats.

"There's not a never-ending supply of animals or animal fat," stated Matt Finch from Transport &amp; Environment.

"So if you put on a massive extra demand source from anywhere from aviation, in this case, the industries where fat is currently being used, will have to look for alternatives. And that alternative is palm oil. So aviation indirectly, will be responsible for increasing the amount of palm oil being pulled through the European systems," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>How many dead pigs are needed to fuel an airplane?</h2>

As per Transport &amp; Environment, a flight from Paris to New York requires fat from 8,800 dead pigs if all the fuel to be used in the aircraft must come from animal sources.

Since the UK is likely to restrict the use of animal products, flights which will get refuelled in Britain are likely to contain small amounts of animal-derived material in their engines.

In the EU, airlines will be given a target of using six&nbsp;per cent sustainable aviation fuel for 2030 of which 1.2 per cent is likely to come from e-kerosene.&nbsp;

If the remaining 4.8 per cent of fuel is made out of animal fat, it would require around 400 dead pigs for every transatlantic flight.

The newly found planet orbits a star known as TOI4603 or HD 245134, and Nasa's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has previously identified the star as a prospective home for a secondary body of unknown type. The body has now been identified as a planet and given the designation TOI 4603b or HD 245134b, reported India Today.

The planet is 731 light years distant from Earth and revolves around its star every 7.24 days. With a temperature of 1396 degrees Celsius, the planet is scorching.

As per the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), what distinguishes this finding is that it falls into the transition mass region between huge giant planets and low-mass brown dwarfs.

The masses of these planets vary from 11 to 16 times that of Jupiter, and fewer than five exoplanets in this mass range are currently known.

While the quest for life beyond Earth continues, scientists have identified over 5,000 exoplanets beyond the solar system with varying natures, features, and atmospheres.

The recently discovered exoplanet TOI 4603b is one of the most massive and dense giant planets, orbiting its home star at a distance less than one-tenth that of our Sun.

"The detection of such systems provides valuable insights into the formation, migration, and evolution mechanisms of massive exoplanets," ISRO&nbsp;said.

Astronomers had previously seen the before-and-after effects of this process, but had never before caught a planet in the act of being consumed.

Astronomers reported that they observed what appeared to them a gas giant, which was bigger than Jupiter, getting eaten by its own star. The star, similar to the sun, was seen puffing up with old age for eons and eventually, its size swelled so big that it ended up engulfing the close-orbiting planet.

The act of a star gobbling up its own planet appeared to be a gloomy preview of how the Earth would end when the sun turns into a red giant and eats up the initial four inner planets.

The galactic feast took place between 10,000 and 15,000 years ago close to the Aquila constellation after the star completed its 10 billion years. After the planet went down the stellar hatch, a swift hot outburst of light took place and a long-lasting stream of dust was seen which shined brightly in cold infrared energy, the researchers stated.&nbsp;

The researchers have earlier seen signs of stars nibbling at planets and decoded the aftermath of gobbling, however, it was the first time they saw the act of swallowing, as per the study which appeared in the journal Nature.

The luminous outburst was spotted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Kishalay De while reviewing sky scans which were captured by the California Institute of Technology's Palomar Observatory. Data crunching and additional observations were needed to unravel the mystery which revealed that the star, instead of eating up its companion star, gobbled up its planet.

The discoveries made are "very plausible," stated Carole Haswell, an astrophysicist at Britain's Open University. Haswell had headed a team in 2010 which used the Hubble Space Telescope to spot the star WASP-12 which was eating its planet.

"This is a different sort of eating. This star gobbled a whole planet in one gulp. In contrast, WASP-12 b and the other hot Jupiters we have previously studied are being delicately licked and nibbled," Haswell said.&nbsp;

Now that the researchers have figured out what they need to look out for, they will try finding more cosmic gulps. The researchers feel that thousands of planets may suffer a similar fate, and something similar may occur in our solar system.&nbsp;

"All that we see around us, all the stuff that we've built around us, this will all be gone in a flash," said De.&nbsp;

“We confirmed the planet using traditional techniques, but our models directed us to run those simulations and showed us exactly where the planet might be,” said Jason Terry, who has been enrolled as a doctoral student at the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, in a statement.&nbsp;

The discovery of a new planet has made a new addition to the ever-increasing catalogue of more than 5,000 exoplanets which have been discovered outside the solar system.

The planet's discovery has been detailed in a study which was published in The Astrophysical Journal, which has been detected around a star named HD 142666.&nbsp;

Researchers stated that machine learning and AI have revealed new processes which underline the evolution and formation of planetary systems.

The newly-discovered planet's signal was detected by AI from the data which the astronomers had previously analysed, but the planet remained unnoticed.&nbsp;

It took just around an hour for the AI to go through the data and point out the strong evidence which confirms the presence of a new planet in a specific spot.&nbsp;

“When we applied our models to a set of older observations, they identified a disk that wasn’t known to have a planet despite having already been analysed. Like previous discoveries, we ran simulations of the disk and found that a planet could re-create the observation,” added Jason.&nbsp;

The model which was processed using AI technology suggested that the planet is present in a particular region of the disk.

“This is an incredibly exciting proof of concept. We knew from our previous work that we could use machine learning to find known forming exoplanets. Now, we know for sure that we can use it to make brand new discoveries,” stated Cassandra Hall, principal investigator of the Exoplanet and Planet Formation Research Group at UGA.&nbsp;

Like previous discoveries, we ran simulations of the disk and found that a planet could re-create the observation,” added Jason. The model which was processed using AI technology suggested that the planet is present in a particular region of the disk. “This is an incredibly exciting proof of concept. We knew from our previous work that we could use machine learning to find known forming exoplanets. Now, we know for sure that we can use it to make brand new discoveries,” stated Cassandra Hall, principal investigator of the Exoplanet and Planet Formation Research Group at UGA. Four human beings will fulfil their dream as they will start living under a Mars-simulated environment&nbsp;this summer, taking ahead the efforts made by engineers and scientists to make it possible to send humans to the red planet and make it a habitable place to survive.

The four volunteers have been part of the year-long mission under which humans are being prepared for the red planet's exploration.

The humans will survive in a habitat that will simulate the climatic conditions similar to what they will face on Mars when they actually set foot on the planet in the near future.

The 3D-printed habitat will include a kitchen, private crew quarters, areas dedicated to fitness, recreation, medical, crop growth activities and work, along with a technical work area as well as two bathrooms.

The crew will begin living in their Martian home in June this year as the most accurate data is collected by the teams during the analogue mission

"During the simulation, crew members will carry out different types of mission activities, including simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, personal hygiene, exercise, and crop growth," said NASA in a statement.

The volunteers will face environmental stressors like isolation, resource limitations, and equipment failure along with a significant workload so as to experience all possible situations the humans may have to face when they actually arrive on Mars.

"The major crew activities during the analogue may consist of simulated spacewalks including virtual reality, communications, crop growth, meal preparation and consumption, exercise, hygiene activities, maintenance work, personal time, science work, and sleep," said NASA in its mission brief.

The volunteers will spend their time remotely operating robotic elements which will be important for real crews during their Mars expedition to extend their exploration capabilities. They will also be given the responsibility of controlling a roving robot and a helicopter-like drone.

Three such analogue missions are being planned by the American space agency to get a better understanding of what is required to inhabit our next-door cosmic neighbour. While they are commencing the analogue mission this year, they will conduct the second mission in 2025 which will be followed up by a third mission in 2026.

“We’re really looking at how the crew performance and health changes based on realistic Mars restrictions and the lifestyle of the crew members. So, the lifestyle is what we're trying to simulate by setting up a realistic environment and workload for the CHAPEA crew,” said Raina MacLeod, CHAPEA deputy project manager.

A real-life Martian? Four humans to start 'living on Mars'

Planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Uranus aligned with the Moon forming an arc across Monday's evening sky, with some being clearly visible to the naked eye of humans.

Such an alignment is often termed "a planetary parade" and was visible to people after sunset in the west. Clear skies and a good view of the horizon gave people the best chance to see the alignment of planets.

Last summer, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury had come together in what was said to be a rare planetary conjunction. The best way to spot the planets in alignment on Monday was to travel away from the city's bright light to someplace with an unobstructed, clear view.

The planets needed to be spotted early in the evening because Jupiter and Mercury disappeared quickly over the horizon. People got some of the best views from Scotland's northern parts and its islands due to the clear skies.

Astronomer Royal for Scotland's Prof Catherine Heymans viewed the spectacle from Portobello beach in Edinburgh.

"Planet spotting on a crystal clear night along with so many other planetary parade enthusiasts was an absolute delight!" she said.

Royal Observatory Greenwich's astronomer Jake Foster said that such alignments of planets are very particular to the perspective we get from Earth.

"The planets aren't aligned right now, they are all spread out across the Solar System but just from our perspective, every once in a while they get close enough to each other in the sky that we're able to see quite a few at once," he added.

Anglesey, which is situated in north Wales, has some of Europe's darkest skies.

North Wales' dark skies officer Dani Robertson, speaking from Anglesey, said that evening was a visual treat even after a slight cloudy haze.

"I'm in my back garden and I can see a very nice little crescent Moon, to the top left and just above it I can see Mars, which has a lovely red glow, and a bit lower towards the horizon there's a really bright light and that's Venus. If it were clearer, I could see all of it, the only one you wouldn't be able to see is Uranus, you'd need a telescope,” she said.

Kielder Observatory's Dan Pye from Hexham, near Scotland's border, said that looking at the planets in alignment gave us a perspective about where are we placed in the solar system.

"Over the course of the night, the distance between these objects shifts as the moon goes around us, we move a little further around the sun, and the planets continue their journeys around the sun. I think witnessing this helps you realise that connection we have to the cosmic ballet we have with other objects in just our very local space theatre,” he said.

A team of researchers led by Brittany Miles of the University of Arizona detected these clouds, said NASA. The team, using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), detected the 'silicate cloud features' in the atmosphere of the planet which has been catalogued as VHS 1256 b. The clouds are constantly moving, rising and mixing in the atmosphere. Hotter material is pushed up while the colder is pushed down.

In addition to the 'sand clouds' the team of researchers has also found presence of water, methane, and carbon monoxide.

VHS 1256 b is 40 lightyears away and revolves around two stars over 10,000 years.

“VHS 1256 b is about four times farther from its stars than Pluto is from our Sun, which makes it a great target for Webb,” said Miles “That means the planet’s light is not mixed with light from its stars.” Higher up in its atmosphere, where the silicate clouds are churning, temperatures reach a scorching 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit (830 degrees Celsius).

Miles was quoted by NASA.

"The finer silicate grains in its atmosphere may be more like tiny particles in smoke,” said noted co-author Beth Biller of the University of Edinburgh, as quoted by NASA “The larger grains might be more like very hot, very small sand particles.”
