The Express Tribune reported that Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and his wife recently visited the ailing former president and army chief Gen (retd), Pervez Musharraf, in Dubai.

Citing sources close to the former military ruler’s family, the newspaper reported that the visitors spent some time with Gen Musharraf and his family at their apartment while the army doctors examined the 78-year-old.

Musharraf, who was diagnosed with a life-threatening health condition called Amyloidosis, has been living in the UAE since 2016 for medical treatment.&nbsp;

According to the UK’s National Health Service, amyloidosis is a chronic metabolic disease that is caused by a build-up of an abnormal protein.

The head of Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) party overseas, Ifzaal Siddique said the former military ruler is ‘not in imminent danger’ and is on his way home.

“Because he has a very strong character, hopefully he will recover soon. That’s what we hope and pray, that he comes out of the disease fully, but as we speak obviously his health is not very good and needs lots of prayers,” added Siddique.

Previously, Babar Iftikhar, director-general of the Inter-Services Public Relations, had said that, “General Pervez Musharraf’s health is very bad. In such a situation, the leadership of the institution is of the view that he should be brought back to Pakistan. But this decision will be made by his family and doctors.”

In 1999 Musharraf seized power in Pakistan in a coup and later ruled as president. After a political party that backed him fared poorly in a general election, he resigned from his post in 2008. Since then he has spent much of the time abroad.

Musharraf, who was tried for treason in a Pakistani court, was sentenced to death by the anti-terrorism court in 2019, but the decision was overturned by a high-court a year later.

Pervez Musharraf stable and out of a ventilator; family says 'recovery not possible, organs malfunctioning'

Broadsheet LLC, an asset recovery firm hired by former Pakistan army chief General Pervez Musharraf to probe the then ousted PM Nawaz Sharif has apologised saying that "not one rupee" in illegal wealth was found linked with Sharif or any of his family members&nbsp;

CEO of Broadsheet, Kaveh Moussavi, has come out making such a confession.

"We found a lot of plundered wealth linked to others, but I can categorically state after virtually 21 years of investigation that not one rupee was related to Nawaz Sharif or any member of his family. If anyone says otherwise, they are lying," Moussavi said during an interview with a Geo television reporter in London.

"I have no hesitation in issuing an apology to the former Prime Minister for my being party to a scam and scandalous nonsense masquerading as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). NAB is a fraud through and through," he added.

In the past, Moussavi had claimed to have evidence of corruption against Nawaz Sharif and had even claimed that the Sharif family approached him with a bribe offer.

The Nawaz Sharif family had denied the allegations and even secured a payment of 20,000 GBP in litigation costs from the firm after it failed to lay the claims on Avenfield apartments.

It is pertinent to mention that Broadsheet LLC helped Musharraf government and the then established NAB to find foreign assets purchased through alleged illegal means and illegal funds.

The revelations hold massive value in reference to the politics of Pakistan as the ruling government of Prime Minister Imran Khan came to power after the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) and the NAB accountability court found then sitting Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif guilty of maintaining assets beyond means abroad.

With Moussavi calling NAB an institution used to get at political rivals, concerns are being raised over its very existence and the overall process of accountability in Pakistan.

Opposition parties have been stating that NAB is working as a mercenary to Imran Khan and is making false cases against party leaders without any evidence or proof.

In addition to this, the military had to suffer budget cuts and there is nothing Gen Bajwa can do.

The FATF listing is yet another darkness that covers the country. Pakistan has been on the ‘grey list’ for three years now and no progress has been made.

It is a similar scenario in geopolitics. Allies such as Saudi Arabia are choosing India over Pakistan. In Afghanistan, the world community has just one message for them: please stay away and let Afghanistan prosper.

He stepped down in 2004 due to differences with the party leadership and Musharraf and was succeeded by his cabinet minister Shaukat Aziz who held the post until the next election was held in 2008.

Coming from an influential political family, Jamali was the first and only PM from the province of Balochistan, which has seen a lot of unrest due to several separatist and Islamist insurgencies.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Imran Khan also expressed his condolences via a tweet.&nbsp;

"Saddened to hear of the passing of Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali. My condolences and prayers go to his family," Khan wrote on Twitter.&nbsp;

Mahmud Kasuri, who was foreign minister when military dictator Pervez Musharraf was in power, claimed that in 2006 Pakistan invited former Indian PM Manmohan Singh to sign an agreement on Sir Creek.&nbsp;

It was the first time a former leader of the armed forces had faced such a sentence for treason in Pakistan.

According to the report, The Lahore court ruled the previous judgement "illegal" and there is "no judgment against him any longer".

The application argued that the president of the special court had crossed all religious, moral, civil and constitutional limits, while ruthlessly, irreligiously, unlawfully, unrealistically awarding a sentence against the dignity of a person.

Court returns Musharraf application against his conviction in treason verdict

Pakistan's former dictator Pervez Musharraf on Friday filed a review petition with the Lahore High Court challenging the verdict by a special court in Islamabad that had pronounced death penalty in the high treason case against him.

On December 19, a special court in Islamabad found Musharraf guilty of high treason and handed him a death sentence under Article 6 of the Constitution.

The verdict marked the first time in Pakistan's history that a military chief was declared guilty of high treason and handed a death sentence.

The former army chief filed the 86 page-long petition through his counsel Advocate Azhar Siddique and named the federal government and others as respondents, Dawn reported.

A full bench, chaired by Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi, will hear the petition on January 9, 2020.

The petition highlighted that the "judgement contained a mix of anomalies and contradictory statements".

It added that the special court "rapidly and hurriedly wrapped up the trial which was far from conclusion."

"The special court [...] announced an award of capital punishment to the applicant without examining the accused under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code (power to examine the accused). The importance of examining the accused in a criminal trial is enormous and any lapse, failure or omission to fulfil this requirement adversely affects the prosecution case," the petition read.

"A criminal trial cannot simply [be] complete without adhering to this mandatory legal requirement," it said.

The importance of examining the accused in a criminal trial is enormous and any lapse, failure or omission to fulfil this requirement adversely affects the prosecution case," the petition read. "A criminal trial cannot simply [be] complete without adhering to this mandatory legal requirement," it said. The demonstrators raised slogans in Musharraf's support and said that he had brought a lot of development to Pakistan and under him, Pakistan earned respect in the world.

Calling the Islamabad Special Court's verdict as 'unfair,' the protestors further claimed that Musharraf's years in power were a "golden era" for Pakistan and he had dealt effectively with terrorism.

President APML Overseas, Afzal Siddiqui, who led the protest, was quoted as saying that the party condemned paragraph 66 of the detailed verdict which contained remarks that Musharraf's body should be dragged and hanged at D-Chowk for three days.

He added that the former leader was not given a fair trial and the way the trial was initiated and conducted showed that it was always been an exercise of "revenge".

He criticised former chief justice, Iftikhar Chaudhry, for instructing the government to try Musharraf under Article 6. He said that it became clear when a Supreme Court judge openly mocked the former president.

"The political, fabricated and fraudulent nature of the case may also be gauged from the fact that it was hastily concluded without hearing the former president, sentencing him in absentia, restricting the latter from presenting evidence and by aggressively dismissing the noble efforts of the law minister and the attorney general for remedying earlier serious politicised legal shortcomings. The new prosecution team was not even granted the time to study the case," he said.

A petition given to the authorities at Pakistan High Commission by the protestors said that holding the constitution in abeyance was not an offence according to the Pakistani constitution in 2007. Only later in 2010 through the 18th amendment, the text of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions/pervez-musharraf-case-a-new-dawn-in-pakistan-269126">Article 6</a> was modified to make abeyance of the constitution an offence.

The three-judge Bench handed out a death sentence to Musharraf for suspending the Constitution and imposing emergency rule in 2007.&nbsp;

Musharraf was first booked for treason in December 2013 and was indicted on March 31, 2014, The prosecution had tabled the entire evidence before the special court in September the same year.&nbsp;

However, due to litigation at appellate forums, the trial of the former military dictator lingered on and he left Pakistan in March 2016.

Born on August 11, 1943, Musharraf - a retired four-star army general - was the 10th President of Pakistan whose presidency lasted from 2001 until 2008 when he had to render his resignation to avoid impeachment.&nbsp;

Born in Delhi, in undivided India, Musharraf was raised in Istanbul and Karachi and went on to join the Pakistan Military Academy in 1961.&nbsp;

Rising through the ranks, Musharraf was appointed as the head of the Pakistani Armed Forces by the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in October 1988 and also led the Kargil infiltration against India in 1999.&nbsp;

Musharraf led a military coup against the democratic government of Nawaz Sharif in 1999, overtaking Sharif as the head of the country and placing him under house arrest.&nbsp;

Although he had promised a subsequent return to civilian rule, Musharraf suspended the constitution and dissolved the Parliament, appointing the National Security Council to rule the country.&nbsp;

Musharraf was later appointed as the President of Pakistan on June 20, 2001, and after a dubious referendum, his presidency was extended for five years in May 2002.&nbsp;

Later in the same year, Musharraf reinstated a heavily amended constitution and general elections were held under the supervision of the army in which the Pakistan Muslim League- Q emerged victoriously.&nbsp;

Musharraf’s move to seek reelection in 2007 faced opposition from the Pakistan Supreme Court over the issue of him continuing to be the head of the state and the army.&nbsp;

Amid rising tensions, the supreme court delayed the results of his reelection to which Musharraf responded by declaring a state of emergency in the country citing terrorist threats.&nbsp;

Emergency enabled him to suspend the constitution again, dismiss the chief justice and replace the supreme court bench who later dismissed the legal challenges to Musharraf’s reelection. Following which Musharraf resigned from his military post and become a civilian president.&nbsp;

During the emergency, Musharraf arrested several opposition leaders and imposed strict restrictions on the media.&nbsp;

Post the emergency uplift in December, several amendments were again made to the constitution that protected measures enforced during the emergency rule.&nbsp;

In the elections of February 2008, Musharraf’s party was widely rejected by the people of Pakistan and saw the reelection of Sharif with the help of coalition with Asif Ali Zardari.&nbsp;

Hence began the impeachment proceedings against Musharraf, leading him to announce his resignation on August 18.&nbsp;

Musharraf tried to return to electoral politics in March 2013 elections, His attempts to contest from his newly formed All Pakistan Muslim League were thwarted due to several political and legal obstacles, leading to his disqualification.&nbsp;

He was later permitted to move to Dubai to seek medical assistance in 2016, where he remains till date to seek treatment for amyloidosis.
