According to the notification, Dar, 73, was appointed by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his new role “with immediate effect and until further orders”.

The Pakistan foreign minister is a chartered accountant and a veteran politician who is a part of Shehbaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party.&nbsp;

The 73-year-old was also reportedly being considered for the next chairman of Pakistan’s Senate (upper house of the Parliament), last month.&nbsp;

However, he lost after a deal between PML-N and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari-led Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). This comes as Sharif’s PML-N had to win PPP’s support to form the coalition government.&nbsp;

The PML-N and the PPP agreed to form the government despite independents backed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party winning majority seats of the 266-member National Assembly.

In the current government, Dar is not only the foreign minister but also a part of the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

On Saturday, other PTI leaders&nbsp;strongly rejected Sharif's claim of victory.

"Yesterday we saw that a person presuming himself as Prime Minister-elect gave a premature statement. He has no majority," said Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, chief of PTI.

"According to [Imran] Khan sahib’s instructions, the areas in which our results were withheld and delayed — we will share that list with you — and intentionally our majority is being converted… to turn a winning seat into a defeat."

"This is why, God-willing, the areas in which the results were not declared, we will hold protests tomorrow in those constituencies outside the relevant RO offices."

Pakistan: Social media platform X blocked amid political turmoil

As the Feb. 8 general elections draw near, the 35-year-old former foreign minister and scion of Bhutto family that gave the nation two Prime Ministers, called for new ideas and leadership to calm political and economic instability.

"The implications of the decisions taken today are going to be faced by the youth of Pakistan," Bilawal told Reuters in Larkana, his hometown in the southern province of Sind, a family bastion.

"I think it would be better if they were allowed to make those decisions."

About two-thirds of Pakistan's population of 241 million is younger than 30, while its Prime Ministers since 2000 have been older than 61, on average.

The Oxford-educated Bhutto is less than half the age of three-time Premier Nawaz Sharif, 74, whom analysts consider the frontrunner in next month's election, and former cricket superstar Imran Khan, 71, who won the last election in 2018.

A member of Pakistan's most powerful political dynasty, Bhutto spoke in an interview during a gruelling four-week campaign that took him to more than 33 towns, while other parties began canvassing just last week.

He is the son of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, assassinated while on a campaign trail in 2007, and the grandson of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, hanged by a military dictator in 1979, both still venerated by Pakistanis.

If Bhutto wins the election, subject to the vagaries of government formation, calculations show he could be just 25 days short of his mother's age on entering office in 1988, at the earliest.

"I haven't actually counted, but ... I think she was the youngest," he responded, when asked how he rated his chances.

However, his Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has lost space to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of Sharif and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of Khan, who have been locked in a bruising political battle for more than a decade.

Positioning himself as an alternate to them in 2024, he recently called on supporters of Khan to vote for him while their leader is in jail.

In the 2013 elections, the PPP came second after Sharif's party, garnering 42 of the 342 seats up for grabs. In 2018, with 54 seats, it was runner-up to the parties of both Sharif and Khan.

Bhutto ruled out joining hands with either contender, however, saying he preferred to form a government with independent candidates.

"You know, lots of independent politicians, probably the highest (number) in our history, are taking part in the coming elections," he added.

Most of the independents belong to Khan's party, which lost the right this month to contest on a single platform, making the approaching election the most open in recent times.

However, one analyst felt the role of Prime Minister might be a tough goal for Bhutto, saying his party had struggled to build its political strength.

"One might be tempted to look at Bilawal as a dark horse candidate for Prime Minister," said Michael Kugelman, director of the Wilson Center's South Asia Institute, as he appeared to be favoured by the military and had been foreign minister.

"But I don't see him as prime minister material just yet," Kugelman added. "The election will likely lead to a coalition government, and Mr. Bilawal could be in the mix for a cabinet-level position, but the top slot is likely too much of a reach."

Instead, Pakistan's army may prefer more experienced leaders, such as Sharif, he said.

Analysts believe the powerful military has thrown its backing to Sharif following a standoff with Khan, giving the former an edge in a country where army generals exert undue influence over setting up governments.

The military denies the accusations, and says it remains apolitical.

Bhutto asked if he thought the military-backed Sharif, responded, "He's certainly giving the impression that he is relying on something other than the people of Pakistan to become Prime Minister for the fourth time."

Questions of transparency will hover over the 2024 elections, just as with earlier ones, he added, but he and his party hoped to win against expectations.

"One might be tempted to look at Bilawal as a dark horse candidate for Prime Minister," said Michael Kugelman, director of the Wilson Center's South Asia Institute, as he appeared to be favoured by the military and had been foreign minister. It was viewed by more than 4.5 million people across Facebook, X and YouTube.

PTI told AFP news agency that Khan sent a shorthand script through lawyers that was meshed out into his rhetorical style.

The text was then dubbed into audio using a tool from the AI firm ElevenLabs, which boasts the ability to create a “voice clone” from existing speech samples.

According to PTI, the audio was bookended with genuine video clips from the Khan’s former speeches. However, the caption appearing at regular intervals said that it was the “AI voice of Imran Khan based on his notes”.

“This was a no-brainer for us, when Imran Khan is no longer there to meet at a political rally,” said the PTI social media chief Jibran Ilyas who is based in the US. “It was to get over the suppression.”

Islamabad now blames Kabul for the resurgence of TTP. &nbsp;Islamabad has given hundreds of thousands of Afghans it has deemed to be living illegally in Pakistan until November 1 to leave voluntarily or face deportation -- an order the Taliban government says amounts to harassment.

From cricket to politics, Pakistan's unending woes

Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday (August 29) received relief after&nbsp;the Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended his three-year sentence in the Toshakhana case.&nbsp;

Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and&nbsp;Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahan­giri presided over the hearing and announced the much-anticipated verdict.&nbsp;

“The copy of the judgment will be available shortly...all we are saying now is that [Imran’s] request has been approved,” said&nbsp;Farooq.&nbsp;

Khan's lawyer Naeem Panjutha also confirmed the decision and said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief's request had been approved by the court.&nbsp;

"The Chief Justice has accepted our request, while suspending the sentence, he has said that a detailed decision will be taken later," posted&nbsp;Panjutha on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Although Khan has received the judgement in his favour, it remains unknown if he will be released from the Attock jail where he has been imprisoned since being arrested by the Karachi police.&nbsp;

It was earlier this month (August 5) that the&nbsp;Islamabad trial court sentenced Khan to three years in prison in the Toshakhana case and banned him from politics for five years.&nbsp;

Subsequently, Khan filed an appeal in the HC against the conviction while approaching the Supreme Court to remand the case back to the trial judge who convicted him. After the arrest, a pre-recorded video of Khan was released by his party wherein he urged his supporters to not stop protesting.&nbsp;

“My Pakistanis, by the time this message reaches you, I will be arrested and put in jail. My only appeal to you is not to sit quietly at home. The struggle that I am going through, it is not for myself, it is for you. This struggle is for your generations. If you don't stand up for your rights, (but) live the life of a slave...Mind you, slaves have no life of their own. Slaves are like ants on land. They don’t make it to greater heights," said Khan.&nbsp;

The verdict by the HC comes a week after the SC acknowledged 'procedural defects' in Khan's conviction. However, the apex court opted to wait for the HC's decision on Khan's plea.&nbsp;

The PTI chief is accused of concealing, in his asset declarations, details of the gifts he retained from the Toshakhana - the treasury&nbsp;established in 1974, where presents given to government officials from foreign officials are kept. The case came to the fore in August 2022 when the coalition government led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) filed the case against Imran.&nbsp;

It was alleged that Khan pocketed $36 million from selling three watches gifted to him. It is alleged that he never deposited some gifts in the treasury, violating the rule as the&nbsp;prime minister is allowed to retain the gifts only after paying a certain amount. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) later said it had disqualified Khan under Article 63(1)(p) of the constitution.

Michael Kugelman, Director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington&nbsp;offered&nbsp;WION an insightful analysis of the potential scenarios and implications for PTI's future, the party's internal dynamics, and the broader political landscape in Pakistan.

According to Kugelman, PTI faces a formidable challenge following Imran Khan's removal from the political scene.&nbsp;

"PTI is in a tough spot. The entire party has been hollowed out, and with Khan out of the picture it's essentially anchorless for the time being," he said.&nbsp;

However, Kugelman pointed&nbsp;out that PTI still enjoys advantages such as "public support and anti-incumbency sentiment". "If it's given enough space to operate in, it still has a chance of making electoral gains."

<h2>Hinging on military relations</h2>

The expert noted that the party without Imran Khan could make electoral gains "if its remaining leadership is able to improve ties with the military."&nbsp;

"Its current leader, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, has a good record of relations with the army. So unless PTI is banned, it has a chance to stay relevant. PTI will likely play the long game as well: Try to hold things together and maintain morale at the top and among the support base, and plan for Khan's eventual release from prison."&nbsp;

He further pointed out that the ongoing tensions between the PML-N and PPP parties suggest that a clear ruling coalition might not emerge from the next election.&nbsp;

"One area to watch is the PDM parties: The PML-N and PPP are at odds on several issues, including the election date. This suggests they may not agree to serve in another ruling coalition together. The election likely will not result in a clear majority, and a weak coalition is a strong possibility."&nbsp;

The expert said that a weak coalition would play to the military's advantage as it is "easier to exploit", enabling them to exert more influence.&nbsp;

Additional District and Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal issued non-bailable arrest orders against the ex-cricket star in the Toshakhana case on February 28 about the concealment of the proceeds from the sale of state gifts. The judge directed the capital city police to bring him to court by March 18.&nbsp;

The memorandum mentioned that such gifts may be "politely refused" and in case, it becomes impossible to refuse without causing offence to the visiting dignitary, "the amount shall be immediately deposited in the government treasury and a copy of Treasury Challan shall be provided to the Toshakhana Incharge, Cabinet Division".&nbsp;

The news development comes amid proceedings against ousted prime minister Imran Khan for "not sharing details" of Toshakhana gifts.&nbsp;

Two non-bailable arrest warrants were issued for Khan on Monday after he failed to appear in courts in cases linked to the Toshakhana reference and threats that had been issued to a female judge.&nbsp;

He added, "Earlier, in a public rally, I had told my supporters that there were four people who had planned to kill me […] but they backed off when I made these revelations."&nbsp;

Addressing his supporters via a video, Khan alleged that the "plan" to assassinate him was made in September.&nbsp;

"This incident 'no, this planned assassination attempt', I want to clear that this plan was made in September," he claimed. "On September 24, I said in a public rally that this plan was formed and that they will blame a religious fanatic [for it]."&nbsp;

Khan, who is recovering from injuries, said that the people who wanted him dead had planned to pin his murder on a "religious fanatic".&nbsp;

"They planned that if a religious fanatic kills me, the responsibility from them will go away," he claimed.&nbsp;

Khan has blamed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal Naseer of hatching a plot to assassinate him.&nbsp;

He made a passionate appeal to Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial to look into a series of matters to put the country's direction right during his speech.&nbsp;

"The nation is looking up to the CJP. Look as an ex-prime minister I cannot register an FIR regarding attack on me. Chief Justice of Pakistan,&nbsp;I want you to take action," he pleaded and urged him to take notice of journalist Arshad Sharif's murder, Senator Azam Swati's torture and non-registration of a case against suspects of attack on him.&nbsp;

Khan alleged that the investigation agencies are in the hands of thieves, a reference to the Sharif and Zardari families.&nbsp;

"Who can trust these army officers (like Maj-Gen Faisal Naseer and etc),"&nbsp;Khan said, adding that the nation has lost "complete trust in the institutions"&nbsp;and now all eyes are on the Supreme Court.&nbsp;

"Pakistan is going to become a banana republic as there is no rule of law (in the country), chief justice you will have to save the country. The country's future lies in your (CJP) hands,? Khan asserted.&nbsp;

Leading the march in the absence of Khan, former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi earlier said that the party chairman would soon join his supporters in the long march to Islamabad.

"Today I want to give a clear message that the convoy of PTI is on the move. If you want to create a Pakistan of a new ideology, then you have to accompany Imran Khan,"&nbsp;Qureshi, flanked by other party leaders including Hammad Azhar, Faisal Javed, Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry among others, told marchers in Wazirabad, some 150 kms from Lahore.

Faisal Javed was among those injured in the attack on Khan.

Qureshi said that despite an assassination attempt on Khan, his party didn't bow or give up on its struggle for freedom.&nbsp;

"Today, we had the option to either stand behind the bullet proof glass or in front of it... And we have chosen the latter...We have decided to look you in the eye. We have decided to tell you that PTI didn't bow and will never do it ...No matter what comes," Qureshi told supporters.&nbsp;

Senior party leader Asad Umar said that no one could scare Khan or his followers.&nbsp;

"Exactly a week from today, an attempt was made to take Imran Khan's life...But let me tell you today, it was not an attempt to take one man's life, it was an attempt to silence the nation's voice," he said.&nbsp;

The long march resumed with prayers for those killed and injured in the shooting.

More than 20,000 policemen have been deployed at the march to provide protection to the protesters.&nbsp;

"Special security arrangements have been made to secure the container of the top leadership of the PTI," senior leader and Punjab minister Bashrat Raja told PTI on Thursday.&nbsp;

On Sunday, Khan had announced resumption of the long march on Tuesday but later the party changed the decision and rescheduled it for Thursday. He would join the long march in Rawalpindi when it reaches there in 10 to 14 days.&nbsp;

During a meeting presided by Khan at his Lahore residence on Wednesday, it was decided that the "Haqeeqi Azadi" march would move towards Rawalpindi from the spot following a public gathering.&nbsp;

The federal government has not yet granted permission to PTI to hold its rally in Islamabad.&nbsp;

A three-member probe panel would be formed on Thursday, which will provide details of the investigation done by local police to the joint investigation team.&nbsp;

One person was killed and 11 others, including Khan, were injured in the attack during the long march.&nbsp;

The PML-N-led government says Khan's long march to Islamabad is aimed at appointing an army chief of his own choice. Incumbent Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa is retiring later this month.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Khan's sons Qasim Khan and Suleman Khan arrived in Lahore on Thursday from the United Kingdom to meet their father.&nbsp;

They were received by the PTI leaders at the Lahore airport. The party said they were eager to see their father in the wake of assassination attempt on him last week.&nbsp;

The cricketer-turned-politician, who was ousted as prime minister in april this year after a no-confidence motion was passed in the National Assembly, is seeking fresh general elections in Pakistan.&nbsp;

However, the federal government led by Prime Minister Sharif is opposed to holding elections now. The term of the current National Assembly will end in August 2023.

The political turmoil in Pakistan comes as it reels from the economic crisis and the effects of devastating floods.

Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) resumes stalled long march

Judging by history, there is nothing new in the assassination of political leaders, military dictators and despots in Pakistan. Providentially, former Prime Minister Imran Khan who had to make a premature exit as the Prime Minister before the completion of his term narrowly escaped assassination in Gujranwala on November 3, when a lone gunman shot at him injuring his leg.&nbsp;

Chronologically speaking, October 16, 1951, stands out in the history of Pakistan as a date when the first Prime Minister of the country, Liaquat Ali Khan, was shot dead during a public rally in Rawalpindi, destroying the basis of a fragile democratic institution of a new nation. The bullets fired in 1951, led to the first major assassination but, unfortunately, it was not the last as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former Premier Imran Khan has become the latest to join the long list of politicians, facing such attacks. The shootings and terrorist attacks that have continued at frequent intervals for more than seven decades, took the lives of several politicians, including former Premier Benazir Bhutto, her brother Murtaza Bhutto, Gujarat Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi, Punjab’s former Home Minister Shuja Khanzada, ex-minister for minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti and many more.&nbsp;

Tragically, Benazir was murdered on December 27, 2007, by a suicide bomber after she had just finished an election rally in Rawalpindi. Her brother was shot dead along with six others in a police encounter near his home in Karachi on September 20, 1996. Again, on August 17, 1988, military dictator and then President of Pakistan, Gen Zia ul Haq died in a plane crash after ruling the country with an iron hand for 17 long years. His death is also strongly suspected to be a case of murder stemming out of a larger conspiracy.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the suspect, who was arrested by the Punjab Police soon after he shot Imran Khan has confessed that he shot the PTI chief as Imran was "misleading" the nation. The suspect also revealed that he had intended to do so ever since the deposed premier left Lahore and started his long march. He denied if anyone else was behind him.&nbsp;

In a related development, party Secretary-General Asad Umar claimed on November 3, that Chairman Imran Khan suspects three people — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and a senior military officer Maj Gen Faisal for being behind the assassination attempt. Imran Khan further claimed that he had advance information that these people could be involved in the assassination attempt. Umar disclosed these during a video statement. Quoting the PTI Chairman, Umar demanded that all these three people must be removed and if not, then the party would hold countrywide protests as Pakistan could not be run in this manner anymore.&nbsp;

Significantly, for the first time in Pakistan's 75-year history, protests took place against Maj Gen Faisal, all-powerful Peshawar Corps Commander, outside his house for having a hand in Imran Khan's assassination attempt. This is indeed disturbing and the signs are ominous.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the US on November 3, condemned the attack on former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and said violence had no place in politics and America was deeply committed to a democratic and peaceful Pakistan. Further, in an official statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the assassination attempt and wished Imran Khan and all others who were injured, a quick recovery. In another related development, in an apparent bid to do some face-saving, the Pakistan Army has “highly” condemned the firing incident and claimed that the military has offered sincere prayers for the precious life lost and the speedy recovery of Imran Khan. However, it is highly unlikely that the sensation caused by the assassination attempt on Imran Khan, the all-powerful Pakistan military will be able to do the damage control as i) Imran Khan has been the eyesore of the military during his rule and towards the latter years, he fell out with the Army Chief, Gen Bajwa over the appointment of the ISI Chief, ii) In Pakistan’s history, ISI and the military have always been ambitious and have been blatantly interfering into the internal affairs of the political machinery and many a times, it caused a coup-de-etat and usurped power either through bloodless or a bloody coup and iii) as it is, Army and the ISI’s credibility within Pakistan and abroad is very low mainly because it is considered to be highly politicized, corrupt, nefarious and for harbouring homegrown terrorists mainly using them against political adversaries and abetting cross border terrorism in India and Afghanistan. Very recently, the mysterious cold-blooded killing of a Pakistani journalist, Arshad Sharif in Kenya for alleged mistaken identity, has raised eyebrows on the Army’s role in exterminating the journalist who was thought to be close to Imran Khan.&nbsp;

Therefore, in other words, Army and the ISI will find it extremely difficult to extricate itself from their alleged conspiracy in the November 3 Imran assassination attempt case. In the meantime, further interesting revelations are expected to make the case more gripping as Pakistan slips into a certain political tumult and uncertainly as the conspiratorial mystery is unlikely to clear the mist in the near foreseeable future.&nbsp;

The shootings and terrorist attacks that have continued at frequent intervals for more than seven decades, took the lives of several politicians, including former Premier Benazir Bhutto, her brother Murtaza Bhutto, Gujarat Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi, Punjab’s former Home Minister Shuja Khanzada, ex-minister for minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti and many more. Tragically, Benazir was murdered on December 27, 2007, by a suicide bomber after she had just finished an election rally in Rawalpindi. Her brother was shot dead along with six others in a police encounter near his home in Karachi on September 20, 1996. Again, on August 17, 1988, military dictator and then President of Pakistan, Gen Zia ul Haq died in a plane crash after ruling the country with an iron hand for 17 long years. His death is also strongly suspected to be a case of murder stemming out of a larger conspiracy. Meanwhile, the suspect, who was arrested by the Punjab Police soon after he shot Imran Khan has confessed that he shot the PTI chief as Imran was "misleading" the nation. The suspect also revealed that he had intended to do so ever since the deposed premier left Lahore and started his long march. He denied if anyone else was behind him. In a related development, party Secretary-General Asad Umar claimed on November 3, that Chairman Imran Khan suspects three people — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and a senior military officer Maj Gen Faisal for being behind the assassination attempt. Imran Khan further claimed that he had advance information that these people could be involved in the assassination attempt. Umar disclosed these during a video statement. Quoting the PTI Chairman, Umar demanded that all these three people must be removed and if not, then the party would hold countrywide protests as Pakistan could not be run in this manner anymore. Significantly, for the first time in Pakistan's 75-year history, protests took place against Maj Gen Faisal, all-powerful Peshawar Corps Commander, outside his house for having a hand in Imran Khan's assassination attempt. This is indeed disturbing and the signs are ominous. Meanwhile, the US on November 3, condemned the attack on former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and said violence had no place in politics and America was deeply committed to a democratic and peaceful Pakistan. Further, in an official statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the assassination attempt and wished Imran Khan and all others who were injured, a quick recovery. In another related development, in an apparent bid to do some face-saving, the Pakistan Army has “highly” condemned the firing incident and claimed that the military has offered sincere prayers for the precious life lost and the speedy recovery of Imran Khan. However, it is highly unlikely that the sensation caused by the assassination attempt on Imran Khan, the all-powerful Pakistan military will be able to do the damage control as i) Imran Khan has been the eyesore of the military during his rule and towards the latter years, he fell out with the Army Chief, Gen Bajwa over the appointment of the ISI Chief, ii) In Pakistan’s history, ISI and the military have always been ambitious and have been blatantly interfering into the internal affairs of the political machinery and many a times, it caused a coup-de-etat and usurped power either through bloodless or a bloody coup and iii) as it is, Army and the ISI’s credibility within Pakistan and abroad is very low mainly because it is considered to be highly politicized, corrupt, nefarious and for harbouring homegrown terrorists mainly using them against political adversaries and abetting cross border terrorism in India and Afghanistan. Very recently, the mysterious cold-blooded killing of a Pakistani journalist, Arshad Sharif in Kenya for alleged mistaken identity, has raised eyebrows on the Army’s role in exterminating the journalist who was thought to be close to Imran Khan. Therefore, in other words, Army and the ISI will find it extremely difficult to extricate itself from their alleged conspiracy in the November 3 Imran assassination attempt case. In the meantime, further interesting revelations are expected to make the case more gripping as Pakistan slips into a certain political tumult and uncertainly as the conspiratorial mystery is unlikely to clear the mist in the near foreseeable future. The audio leaks, that between Senator Shaukat Tareen, the former finance minister and his conversations with Mohsin Laghari, the finance minister of Punjab province and Taimur Saleem Jhagra, the finance minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, both of whom are ruled by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in the provincial governments.&nbsp;

In the audio leaked, Shaukat Tareen is heard giving instructions on writing a letter to the Federal showing the provinces' ineligibility to fulfil the commitments with the federal government in order to proceed with the IMF, owing to the flood situation. The Punjab finance minister is heard asking Shaukat Tareen, whether this would damage the state of Pakistan, KP Finance Minister also calls the move in his conversation as a blackmailing tactic.&nbsp;

While the call talks about sending a copy of the letters informally to the IMF, KPKs finance minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra has denied sending any such copy to any IMF representative.&nbsp;

On Friday, a letter surfaced on social media which was confirmed by the KP minister as his writing where the province of KPK expressed their ineligibility to the federal government to fulfil their commitments to the IMF, due to mis-commitments and flood situation.&nbsp;

The move was widely critiqued and was seen as PTI's efforts to torpedo the IMF deal ahead of the groups board meeting on Monday.&nbsp;

While the veracity of the audio has been confirmed by PTI while defending that there was nothing wrong said or against law in it, it also remains unclear until the filing of this report as to who recorded and leaked the conversation.&nbsp;

Pakistan's top court has decided to initiate contempt proceedings against former prime minister Imran Khan for his controversial remarks against a female sessions court judge at a rally.

He further said that he will take Pakistanis with him on a journey of "Haqiqi Azadi".&nbsp;The PTI initially wanted to hold the show at the Islamabad Parade Ground. However, since they weren’t granted permission for the same by the government, they had to shift it to Lahore, Geo TV reported.

The gathering has also led to controversy since the astroturf at the hockey stadium in Lahore was removed for it. Imran Khan will address the people at the event, which as per&nbsp;PTI member Azhar Mashwani, is being held because the federal government has “insufficient” plans to celebrate the 75th Independence Day of the country.

Notably, Imran Khan’s party has been pushing for early elections stating that "only early election can end economic, political crises in Pakistan”.

As per the media reports, ECP also issued a notice to the party asking why the funds should not be confiscated. The implication of such activities could result in Khan being banned from politics. Notably, Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party rose to prominence on an anti-corruption drive. This particular ruling appears to be a major setback for Imran Khan as he is currently leading a campaign against the new government. The case was filed by PTI founding member Akbar S Babar. It had been pending since November 14, 2014. As seen by the news agency Reuters, the ruling stated: “The commission is satisfied that the contributions and donations have been received by the respondent party from prohibited sources.” The commission also said that the party also hid 13 accounts. The ruling further added that the declaration submitted to the commission about the party finances by Khan as its chairman from 2008 to 2013 was “found to be grossly inaccurate”. Naqvi is among several people charged by US prosecutors with being part of an international scheme to defraud investors, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Although, Naqvi has denied all the allegations. The commission said the party was a “willing recipient of prohibited money” amounting to $2.1 million from Naqvi’s Wootton Cricket Limited. The mentioned entity is registered in the Cayman Islands. As per the ruling, several other foreign accounts in the United States, Britain, Australia, UAE, Canada, Switzerland and other countries, deposited money in Khan’s party accounts.
