Neither India nor the US was responsible for Pakistan’s economic downfall, rather “‘we shot ourselves in our own foot”, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said, indirectly blaming the military establishment for the current situation.

The 73-year-old leader made these remarks on Tuesday (Dec 19) while addressing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) members in Islamabad, as the party gears up for the upcoming general elections in February 2024.

“Today where Pakistan has reached (in terms of the state of the economy) this is not done by India, the US or even Afghanistan. In fact, we shot ourselves in our own foot…they (a reference to the military) imposed a selected (government) on this nation by rigging the 2018 polls that led to the sufferings of the people and downfall of the economy,” Sharif, the three-time prime minister who is vying to gain power for the fourth time, said.

<h2>Sharif going soft on India?</h2>

Since returning to Pakistan in October from four years of self-imposed exile in the UK, Sharif has been making comments that seemingly reflect a softer approach towards India. It comes amidst the election frenzy in the South Asian country which has been traditionally laced with anti-India rhetoric.

The 73-year-old leader even went a step further by criticising the judges for legitimising military dictators.

“The judges garland them (military dictators) and legitimise their rule when they break the Constitution. When it comes to a prime minister the judges stamp his ouster. The judges also approve the act of dissolution of the parliament…why?” he asked.

The PML-N supremo, who was overthrown from power three times in 1993, 1999 and 2017, lashed out at former&nbsp;ISI chief Gen Faiz Hamid for engineering his ouster from power in 2017.

“A case has been opened in the Supreme Court against those (Faiz Hamid and others) who had said that if Nawaz came out of jail their two-year hard work would be wasted,” he said.

<h2>Recalls the number of times he was ousted&nbsp;</h2>

Recalling the number of times he was ousted as the PM, Nawaz said, “I was prime minister in the morning and in the evening I was declared a hijacker. Similarly in 2017, I was ousted from power for not taking salary from my son.”

Pakistan have rested Mohammed Haris for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Apart from him, leg-spinner Shadab Khan will also miss the series due to ankle injury. Pakistan are currently in Australia for the Test series and will play against New Zealand from January 12 in the T20I series.&nbsp;

Speaking on the selection, Pakistan chief selector Wahab Riaz said: "Shadab is a very important member of Pakistan T20 cricket and he's a white-ball specialist. Unfortunately he got injured during the season; he twisted his ankle which will take another two weeks for rehab. He will be available to bowl after that. Haris is rested because there were some first-class performers and we saw Harris' capability and since he's part of our plans going forward, we want to use our pool of players."

The Men In Green will also be missing the service of frontline pacer Naseem Shah who has been injured since September earlier this year. Wahab, however, said that the pacer has recovered from the injury but is going though rehab.

"Ihsanullah, Shadab, Mohammad Hasnain, and Naseem Shah were unfit," Wahab said. "The good news is Hasnain and Naseem have recovered and Naseem is undergoing rehab at the cricket academy and we don't want to overload him so he will be available for the PSL next year. Same for Hasnain - he is returning and we've called him at the academy so we can assess him. Ihsanullah will unfortunately take more time and I'm not sure right now if he'll play in the PSL or not. Shadab will also come to the academy after his ankle injury and he'll undergo rehab."

The T20I series against New Zealand will also be Shaheen Shah Afridi's first as the full time skipper. Afridi was appointed as the skipper in the shortest format in the aftermath of the ODI World Cup 2023 where Pakistan failed to qualify for the semis.

Artificial Rain technology was reportedly deployed in Pakistan's Lahore city on Saturday (Dec 16) in an unprecedented first. The move was targeted to address perilous smog levels in Lahore.&nbsp;

Ten areas of the megacity were targeted in this groundbreaking experiment, Pakistani media reported.

Caretaker chief minister of Pakistan's Punjab province, Mohsin Naqvi, said that the unprecedented initiative was made possible through the assistance of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE's intervention comes as Pakistan's economy is estimated to have contracted during the current financial&nbsp;year, according to World Bank data.

Emirati teams, accompanied by two specialised planes equipped with cloud seeding technology, arrived in Lahore approximately 10 to 12 days ago.

&nbsp;"The gift of artificial rain from the United Arab Emirates is an innovative approach to tackle the ongoing smog crisis," stated Naqvi during a media briefing.&nbsp;

The effectiveness of the artificial rain was expected to be assessed by Saturday night, providing crucial insights into the potential of this groundbreaking method.

Cloud seeding, colloquially known as artificial rain or blueskying, involves releasing common salt or a mixture of salts into clouds.&nbsp;

<h2>'Gift from UAE'</h2>

This process stimulates condensation, leading to rainfall. Countries like the United States, China, and the UAE have&nbsp;been increasingly using this weather modification technique to address water scarcity in its arid regions.

Lahore, infamous&nbsp;for being one of the worst global hotspots for air pollution, experiences increased levels of smog during winter due to a combination of low-grade diesel emissions, stubble&nbsp;burning, and cold temperatures.&nbsp;

With over 11 million residents affected, the city faces severe health risks, exacerbated by the hazardous levels of PM2.5 pollutants measured at more than 66 times the World Health Organization's safety thresholds on Saturday.

The catastrophic health consequences of prolonged exposure to such toxic air includes strokes, heart diseases, lung cancer, and respiratory ailments, according to the World Health Organization.

It was not immediately clear if this group is linked to the main Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group of Islamist and sectarian militants.

In response to the rising threat, the Pakistani military has conducted multiple operations against militants, particularly in the Waziristan region adjacent to the district where the recent attacks occurred. Pakistan’s top poll body, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) late Friday (Dec 15) issued the election schedule for the upcoming general polls to be held&nbsp;on February 8, 2024.

The schedule was released hours after a ruling from the country’s Supreme Court that quashed an observation from the Lahore High Court (LHC) which stated that bureaucrats can’t be appointed as returning officers (ROs) and district returning officers (DROs).

The apex court had also ordered the ECP to release the schedule as early as possible.

The polling process in the country will now start on December 19, when the returning officer (RO) will issue a public notice, while the ECP will also resume training for the ROs and district returning officers (DROs).

Earlier on Wednesday (Dec 13), while responding to a plea filed by ex-PM Imran Khan’s PTI party, the LHC had halted the appointments of bureaucrats to act as DROs and ROs for the upcoming general elections.

Subsequently, the ECP suspended a notification regarding the appointment of DROs, ROs, and AROs, that raised concerns over potential further delays in the election process, which is already running overdue by two months.

But on Friday (Dec 15), the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Esa summoned the Election Commission and discussed the situation following the high court’s decision.

Masood Azhar Alvi, the orchestrator of the 2001 Parliament attack in New Delhi, is reportedly living under the protective custody of the Pakistani deep state in Islamabad, twenty-two years after the infamous incident.
