It won a Best Picture nomination at this year's Academy Awards, competing against the likes of Oppenheimer&nbsp;and Anatomy Of A Fall&nbsp;as well as for Best Original Screenplay.

The film also won the award for best feature at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards.

"Comedies, or something considered lighter, are generally at a disadvantage against something a little heavier," he said.

"It could be the biggest year ever for women, in terms of the best picture race," said Hammond.

The story of a human couple (Bomman and Bellie) showering love towards the orphaned elephant calves is striking, because of how it is set in a dense forest that is extremely prone to adverse interactions between humans and animals.

In Mudumalai and adjoining regions, there have been several instances of local residents being fatally attacked by wild animals and there have also been cruel and mindless acts of violence that people have committed against wildlife.

In early 2021, WION had reported from Mudumalai about how miscreants had hurled a burning object to chase away an injured wild tusker, eventually leading to its tragic and painful death.

While many devices across the globe would now be streaming 'The Elephant Whisperers', there's one place where it wouldn't be possible to do so. The Theppakadu region of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. It is where Bomman and Bellie stay.

This dense forest region, which lays within the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, is almost at the tri-junction of the southern Indian states Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Here, mobile data (4G) signals are not available and only voice calls or very limited mobile data usage is possible, as the only network that works in the region is that of the government-run BSNL.

Protagonists of Oscar-winning docu 'The Elephant Whisperers' can't watch the film at home, here's why

India made history on March 13 as the popular song 'Naatu Naatu' from the movie RRR won an Oscar award for the Best Original Song. The news brought much jubilation for the people across India and former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar too shook a leg on the popular song during Day 5 of the fourth Test between Australia and India, which ended in a draw.

Star Sports Telugu language channel tweeted a video where Gavaskar, before the start of the play on Day 5, congratulated the entire RRR team for their historic achievement at the 95th Academy Awards.

India vs Australia, 4th Test: Sunil Gavaskar DANCES on Oscar winning 'Naatu Naatu' song - WATCH

Indian director S.S. Rajamouli's films are all-singing, all-dancing spectacles -- and he is now a favourite to secure the first-ever Oscar for an all-Indian film.

His three-hour extravaganza RRR&nbsp;is a fictionalised story of two colonial-era revolutionaries, filled with large-scale, visual effects-laden action sequences and musical numbers.

It has smashed box offices in India, wowed audiences from the United States to Japan, and is a front-runner for the Best Original Song award at next month's Oscars, having already beaten out Taylor Swift and Rihanna for the same prize at the Golden Globes.

"When I'm going to a movie, I would like to see larger-than-life characters, larger-than-life situations, larger-than-life drama," Rajamouli told AFP.

"And that's what I like to make," he said at his office in the southern city of Hyderabad.&nbsp;

"Nothing holds the heroes back in delivering their action sequences."

A word-of-mouth hit that has seen moviegoers dancing in cinema aisles, Telugu-language RRR&nbsp;has become one of the highest-grossing Indian movies ever.&nbsp;

It has also introduced the country's lesser-known but prolific southern cinema industry to a worldwide audience.&nbsp;

India's Hindi-language Bollywood cinema industry has long been known as the world's most productive, but international film awards beyond the festival circuit have largely remained the preserve of English-language movies.

That changed when Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" swept four Oscars in 2020, including Best Film and Best Director, after decades when the plaudits for Korean cinema were confined to the critics.

The only previous Indian Oscars won were for English-language films -- the 1982 British-Indian co-production "Gandhi" and 2008's Mumbai-set British drama "Slumdog Millionaire".

Now Rajamouli hopes a statuette for the dance number "Naatu Naatu" will pave the way for Indian auteurs to do the same.

Shot in front of Ukraine's turquoise presidential palace -- before the war -- it features high-energy performances from the two leads as they confront their antagonist.

"We are breaking ground, but I think we are in very, very initial, initial steps," said the 49-year-old.

"If you see (South) Korea, for example, the kind of inroads that they have made... we should aspire to do that, all Indian film-makers."

Rajamouli's 2015 historical action-drama "Baahubali" -- then the most expensive film made in India -- made him a household name domestically, leading a wave of southern films to the top of the multilingual country's box office.

The 2017 sequel was well-received, with both movies among the highest-grossing of all time in the nation of 1.4 billion people,&nbsp;cementing Rajamouli's reputation as a blockbuster director.&nbsp;

He was "pleasantly surprised" by the buzz around "RRR" in the West, he said, pointing to what he called a "lack of maximalist entertainment".

"There's a section of audiences who wanted that, a celebratory kind of engagement with the cinema."

Despite appearing on Netflix only two months after it debuted across 1,200 US theatres in March last year, "RRR" has become among North America's highest-grossing Indian films.

It was "unprecedented" and "a total outlier", said analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.

Audiences continue to flock to packed screenings for repeat viewings -- a January showing at Hollywood's historic TCL Chinese Theatre sold out in 98 seconds.&nbsp;

Rajamouli's films have been compared to Marvel superhero movies and he said it would "be an honour" to be asked to do one -- but he worries that a major studio would want to involve itself in the production process.

Rights campaigners say that under Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bollywood&nbsp;stars are facing increased pressure -- particularly minority Muslim actors like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan.&nbsp;

Rajamouli grew up in a "deeply religious" Hindu family but is now an atheist and believes that "religion essentially is exploitation".

He blames criticism of the film on the polarisation of debate in India that does not allow for a middle ground.

"Any extreme point of view, I oppose," he said.

"I don't have any kind of hidden agenda... I make films for people who are willing to pay their hard-earned money on the film ticket.

"I like to get them entertained, make them feel dramatic about the characters, about the situations, have a good time, go back and live their lives."

At Monday's Oscar nominees luncheon, the Will Smith-Chris Rock slap incident&nbsp;sat front and centre. So much so that Janet Yang,&nbsp;president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,&nbsp;neither had to describe it nor had to say the names of the two parties involved in the incident.

Speaking in front of a ballroom full of award hopefuls including Tom Cruise, Angela Bassett, Cate Blanchett and Steven Spielberg, Yang aired her regrets for last year's "unprecedented event".

She said, "I’m sure you all remember we experienced an unprecedented event at the Oscars. What happened onstage was wholly unacceptable and the response from our organization was inadequate."

Many feel that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did little in response to Smith storming the stage and slapping Rock across the face during last year’s Oscars telecast or in the immediate aftermath. After nearly two weeks, the&nbsp;board of governors voted to ban Smith from the Oscars and all other academy events for a decade. Smith had already preemptively resigned as an academy member.

"We learned from this that the academy must be fully transparent and accountable in our actions,"&nbsp;Yang said.&nbsp;"And particularly in times of crisis, you must act swiftly, compassionately and decisively for ourselves and for our industry. You should and can expect no less from us going forward."

Yang, who was not president at the time, was interrupted by a mild round of applause and did not elaborate further, moving on to happier topics.

She was met with whooping applause when told the nominees that all categories will be shown live on the March 12 ABC telecast. Last year, in a controversy largely eclipsed by the slap, several Oscars were handed out in a pre-telecast ceremony and edited versions of winners’ speeches were squeezed into the main show.

The luncheon is a warm, feel-good affair where nominees are in general treated with equality, and a relatively unknown nominee up for best animated short might be seated next to an A-lister up for the best actor.

Some, of course, attract more attention than others and don’t need to wear the nametags handed out to all.

Tom Cruise, nominated as a producer for best picture candidate Top Gun: Maverick, managed briefly to mix in with the crowd in a ballroom at the Beverly Hilton before he attracted a crowd of gawkers.

He and Jamie Lee Curtis, up for best supporting actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once,&nbsp;pressed their foreheads together and giggled when they bumped into each other.

He smiled widely as he posed for photos with his old War of the Worlds&nbsp;and Minority Report&nbsp;collaborator Steven Spielberg, up for best director for The Fabelmans,&nbsp;and Michelle Yeoh, up for best actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once,&nbsp;the year’s most nominated film.

In a pairing representative of the random-seeming seating chart, Odessa Rae, producer of the nominated documentary feature Navalny,&nbsp;chatted with table-mate and best actor nominee Colin Farrell during the lunch of risotto and oyster mushrooms cut to resemble scallops.

At another table nearby, Brian Tyree Henry, best-supporting actor nominee for Causeway,&nbsp;laughed with Jenny Slate, voice star of animated feature nominee Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.

The centrepiece of the luncheon is the class picture, the staging of which feels like a high school graduation. An academy governor read off the names of 182 nominees and their peers cheered as they walked up and took their spots on the risers.

"Jamie Lee Curtis," producer DeVon Franklin enunciated loudly into the mic. Curtis leapt up and got a big ovation as she climbed alone to the top tier. Henry, a first-time nominee, stood at his table, raised an arm in the air and yelped when his name was called.

Riseborough, who plays a Texas single mother struggling with alcoholism, beat out presumed frontrunners Viola Davis ("The Woman King") and Danielle Deadwyler ("Till").

The nod came after an intense, last-minute social media campaign mounted on her behalf by celebrity friends including Edward Norton, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sarah Paulson.

Movie industry magazine Variety said the Academy had received multiple calls and emails in the wake of the nomination, and there was a raging debate among moviemakers over whether rules had been broken.

On Friday, the Academy said it would be examining its processes, although it did not mention the film by name.

"It is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the Awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner, and we are committed to ensuring an inclusive awards process," a statement said.

"We are conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated, and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication."

"We have confidence in the integrity of our nomination and voting procedures, and support genuine grassroots campaigns for outstanding performances."

The Oscars are awarded based on the votes of the 9,500 members of the Academy – many of them previous winners.

Academy membership is divided into 17 branches – actors, directors, producers, costume designers and so on – with each branch picking the nominees in their area of expertise.&nbsp;

With around 1,300 members of the actors' branch, a nominee in this category needs just over 200 votes to make the shortlist.

In the months ahead of the Oscars, which this year will be held on March 12, billboards in Los Angeles are plastered with advertisements for films as studios seek to persuade voting members.

There are also a host of parties and events aimed at generating a buzz.

Campaigns are often organised by professional companies and generally don't come cheap, so are usually the preserve of large studios.

But "To Leslie" was absent from this circuit.

Variety reported Friday that "Titanic" star Frances Fisher had posted on social media encouraging her fellow Academy members to nominate Riseborough.

"To my fellow Actors in The Academy – According to Pete Hammond writing for Deadline, Andrea Riseborough can secure an Oscar nomination if 218 (out of 1,302) actors in the Actors Branch nominated her in first position for Best Actress," she wrote on Instagram, according to Variety.
