North Korea blasts Japan's Shinzo Abe, warns of 'real ballistic missile'

North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles on Saturday, two days after South Korea decided to pull out of a military intelligence-sharing agreement with Japan.

North Korea fires two suspected missiles, 7th missile fire in a month

US President Donald Trump said Friday that he agreed with Kim Jong Un's opposition to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-south-korea-lack-political-willon-peace-talks-north-korea-241083">US-South Korea war games</a>, refusing to criticise missile tests that Pyongyang said are a "solemn warning" over the exercises.

Trump said he had received a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-says-north-koreas-kim-sent-very-beautiful-letter-new-meeting-possible-241874">"beautiful letter" from Kim</a> expressing Pyongyang's anger over the joint war games, which spurred the series of tests of extremely fast, short-range guided missiles.

But hours after Trump said he foresaw having another meeting with Kim, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired two more apparent rockets into the East Sea or the Sea of Japan.

It was the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-conducts-new-launches-threatens-to-take-new-road-240949">fifth round of missile launches in two weeks</a>, and came just days after US and South Korean forces began their defence readiness exercises, which Kim's government has said are a "flagrant violation" of the diplomatic process between Pyongyang, Washington and Seoul.

Keeping the door open&nbsp;

The newest launch came after Trump strained to keep the door open for denuclearisation negotiations with Kim after months in which no progress has been made.

While other US officials have called the launches "provocations," Trump said he agreed with the North Korean leader and was hoping to meet him again, with talks having been frozen for months.

"I got a very beautiful letter from Kim Jong Un yesterday," Trump said. "It was a very positive letter."

"He wasn't happy with the war games," Trump said, referring to the US-South Korean military exercises.

"As you know, I've never liked it either. I've never been a fan. And you know why? I don't like paying for it."

Hours later, the White House had no immediate comment on the newest rocket tests.

"We are aware of reports of a missile launch from North Korea, and we continue to monitor the situation. We are consulting closely with our Japanese and South Korean allies," a senior administration official told AFP.

Faltering nuclear talks

Trump has appeared determined to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/the-us-north-korea-in-regular-communication-for-the-resumption-of-denuclearisation-talks-official-240377">secure a denuclearisation agreement</a> with North Korea ahead of the November 2020 US presidential elections, despite faltering talks since he first met Kim in a historic ice-breaking summit in Singapore in June 2018.

At the time, the US temporarily froze military exercises with South Korea and Trump claimed Kim had agreed to give up his newly-acquired nuclear weapons and long-range ballistic missiles.

But Pyongyang has maintained that the United States must lift its economic embargo and sanctions on the country to make any progress in nuclear talks.

Yet even after their abortive second summit in Hanoi in February, Trump has been loath to criticize the North Korean leader. &nbsp;

In June he offered an olive branch by meeting Kim in the Panmunjon truce village on the North Korea-South Korea border, the first sitting US president ever to step inside the North.

And on Friday, he said the missile launches weren't important.

"I'll say it again. There have been no nuclear tests. The missile tests have all been short-range. No ballistic missile tests, no long-range missiles," Trump said.

That contrasted with his tough words Friday for Washington's key East Asia allies, who have been locked in a searing trade row.

"South Korea and Japan are fighting all the time," he said. "They have to get along with each other. If they don't get along, what are we doing?"

Missile 'provocations'

But others in the Trump administration sound less enthusiastic about Kim's missiles.

After Pyongyang's fourth launch early this week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington was ready to resume talks, but that the target of the "full, final denuclearisation of North Korea" had not changed.&nbsp;

A senior State Department official who refused to be named told journalists last week that the missile tests were an impediment to peace.

"The missile launches, any kind of provocations, are not helpful to advancing the cause of diplomacy," the official said.

The official said there was a unified message going to the North Koreans from China and Russia that they need to "cease the provocations, reengage in diplomacy to achieve complete denuclearisation."

North Korea: Missile tests are warning to South Korea

President Trump said he wasn’t bothered by North Korea’s latest round of missile tests and the U.S. wasn’t seeking regime change in Iran, striking conciliatory notes on the two nations’ nuclear programs as he wrapped up his second trip to Japan since taking office.

Did North Korea violate United Nations resolutions?

A US think tank has said that it had <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/kim-pompeo-agree-to-2nd-us-north-korea-summit-at-earliest-date-170028">identified at least 13 of an estimated</a> 20 undeclared missile operating bases inside North Korea, underscoring the challenge for American negotiators hoping to persuade Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.

In reports released by the Washington, D.C-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, researcher Joseph Bermudez said maintenance and minor infrastructure improvements have been observed at some of the sites, despite the ongoing negotiations.

The sites identified in the CSIS report are scattered in remote, mountainous areas across North Korea, and could be used to house ballistic missiles of various ranges, with the largest believed to be capable of striking anywhere in the United States.

Sakkanmol, the site closest to the border with South Korea and its capital Seoul, appears to be "active and being reasonably well maintained," the report found.

None of the missile bases have been acknowledged by North Korea, and analysts say an accurate disclosure of nuclear weapons and missile capabilities would be an important part of any denuclearisation deal.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump had pledged to work towards&nbsp;denuclearisation at their landmark June summit in Singapore, but the agreement was short on specifics and negotiations have made little headway.

North Korea has said it has closed its Punggye-ri nuclear testing site and the Sohae missile engine test facility. It also raised the possibility of shuttering more sites and allowing international inspections if Washington took "corresponding measures," of which there has so far been no sign.

WION morning news brief, November 4, 2017

North Korea held mass celebrations for its latest successful long-range missile test, Pyongyang&#39;s state media said Saturday, with a propaganda-filled display of fireworks and dancing in public squares.

The ruling Workers Party official daily Rodong Sinmun covered its front page with colour photographs showing thousands of tightly packed soldiers and people applauding in Pyongyang&#39;s Kim Il-Sung square, which was decorated with large portraits of the North&#39;s late leaders.&nbsp;

&quot;We heartily celebrate the successful test launch of the Hwasong-15 which showed Chosun (North Korea)&#39;s power and greatness to the whole world&quot;, read one banner held up by the crowd, referring to the missile.&nbsp;

North Korea on Wednesday successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile, with leader Kim Jong-Un declaring his country had now achieved full nuclear statehood.

The US in response warned that Kim Jong-Un&#39;s regime would be &quot;utterly destroyed&quot; if its pursuit of a long-range nuclear missile arsenal provokes a military clash, and has battled to maintain international solidarity in the face of North Korea&#39;s nuclear threat.

Kim himself was absent from the celebrations -- he usually stays away from such events -- but Friday&#39;s gathering drew key military, party and government leaders.

&quot;Long Live the General Kim Jong-Un who has brought us the great historic cause of nuclear statehood&quot;, another banner read.

Vice Chairman Pak Kwang-Ho of the party&#39;s decision-making Central Committee told the crowd that, after Wednesday&#39;s test launch, &quot;now no one can infringe our sovereignty and rights to survive and develop&quot;, according to the daily.

He said that the United States had been &quot;jolted&quot; at the strengthening of North Korea&#39;s nuclear force and could attempt to commit &quot;robber-like&quot; provocative acts.&nbsp;

He repeated Kim&#39;s warning that the North would respond with the &quot;highest level of hard-line countermeasure in history&quot;.

Kim first made the threat in September in response to US President Donald Trump&#39;s UN speech threatening to destroy the North and mocking him as &quot;Little Rocket Man&quot;.

The ICBM Hwasong-15 type weaponry system used in Wednesday&#39;s test is an intercontinental ballistic rocket tipped with super-large heavy warhead capable of striking the whole mainland of the US, the North said.

But analysts remain unconvinced that the North has mastered the technology required to launch and direct a missile, and ensure it survives the difficult re-entry into the Earth&#39;s atmosphere.

Tensions are expected to rise further in the coming week as South Korea and the United States launch a massive air force drill mobilising some 230 aircraft including six US F-22 Raptor stealth jet fighters.

It was the nuclear-armed North&#39;s first ballistic test in more than two months and an initial Pentagon assessment said the ICBM flew about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) before splashing down within Japan&#39;s maritime Economic Exclusion Zone.

At least one expert said its lofted trajectory suggested an actual range of 13,000 kilometres that would bring every city in the continental United States within range.

North Korea&#39;s immediate neighbours were less restrained, with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe calling the test an intolerable, &quot;violent&quot; act and South Korean President Moon Jae-In condemning Pyongyang&#39;s &quot;reckless&quot; behaviour.

The South Korean military responded by staging a precision-strike missile exercise as it has done following previous North Korean tests.

Prior to Wednesday&#39;s launch, the North&#39;s last missile test was on September 15 and the subsequent pause had prompted some to speculate whether the North might be willing to embrace a negotiated solution to the nuclear standoff.

Diplomatic options&nbsp;

Trump insisted there would be no change to his administration&#39;s &quot;maximum pressure campaign&quot; which has sought to curb Pyongyang&#39;s nuclear weapons programme with tightened sanctions backed by dire warnings of massive retaliation in the event of any attack.

But his secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, also stressed that diplomatic options remained &quot;viable and open.&quot;&nbsp;

It was the North&#39;s third successful ICBM test and David Wright, a co-director at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the flight parameters pointed to a &quot;significantly longer&quot; range than previous launches.

&quot;Such a missile would have more than enough range to reach Washington DC, and in fact any part of the continental United States,&quot; he said.

While Pyongyang has yet to prove its mastery of the re-entry technology required to bring a warhead back through the Earth&#39;s atmosphere, experts say it is on the threshold of developing a working nuclear strike capability against US cities.

Tensions over the North&#39;s weapons programme peaked after Pyongyang conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in September and then fired an intermediate-range missile over Japan.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Wednesday&#39;s test went higher than ever before and was a step toward North Korea building missiles that can &quot;threaten everywhere in the world, basically.&quot;

There was no immediate reaction from China, the North&#39;s sole ally and economic lifeline, which has come under repeated US pressure to do more to rein in Pyongyang&#39;s nuclear ambitions.

China has pushed for a &quot;dual track approach&quot; to the crisis which would see the United States freeze its military drills in South Korea while North Korea would halt its weapons programmes.

Washington has rejected that approach, and last week unveiled new sanctions targeting North Korean shipping, as well a number of Chinese companies doing business with the pariah state.

Terror sponsor&nbsp;

President Trump also declared North Korea a state sponsor of terrorism, a spot on a US blacklist the country had shed nearly a decade ago.

But the North remained defiant, vowing to continue building up its nuclear force and warning that sanctions would never succeed.

Drumming up support for a tough stance against North Korea&#39;s nuclear weapons ambitions was the main focus of a marathon Asian tour undertaken by Trump earlier this month.

Trump and Abe, who enjoy a close relationship, spoke by phone after Wednesday&#39;s ICBM test and, according to a White House statement, agreed that repeated provocations by leader Kim Jong-Un&#39;s regime were &quot;undermining&quot; North Korea&#39;s own security and &quot;further isolating it from the international community&quot;.

Trump&#39;s relations with his South Korean counterpart Moon, whom he has accused of appeasing Pyongyang, are far cooler, and there are concerns in Seoul that the US president might be considering military action against the North that could trigger a full-scale war.

&quot;The situation could get out of control,&quot; Moon warned during a hastily convened meeting with national security officials on Wednesday.

&quot;We have to prevent such a scenario where the North may miscalculate the situation and threaten us with nuclear weapons, or the US may consider a pre-emptive strike,&quot; Moon said.

Seoul is home to 10 million people and only about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the border -- well within range of Pyongyang&#39;s artillery.

North Korea test-fires ICBM; 'will take care of it,' says Trump

The United States should assume<a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/north-korea-warns-threats-a-big-miscalculation-in-letter-to-australia-lawmakers-22635" target="_blank"> Kim Jong-Un</a>&#39;s regime is &quot;on the cusp&quot; of getting a nuclear missile capable of striking US targets and work to prevent this, the head of the CIA said Thursday.

CIA director Mike Pompeo said President Donald Trump is determined to prevent <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/nuclear-war-may-break-out-at-any-time-warns-north-korea-22539" target="_blank">North Korea</a> from making the breakthrough &quot;whether it happens on Tuesday or a month from Tuesday.&quot;

Both Pompeo and US National Security Adviser HR McMaster said Trump would still prefer to use sanctions and diplomacy to force Kim to come to the table to discuss disarmament.

But, speaking to a Washington policy forum, both also warned that the use of US military force remains an option to prevent Pyongyang from acquiring a long-range nuclear missile.

&quot;They are close enough now in their capabilities that from a US policy perspective we ought to behave as if we are on the cusp of them achieving that objective,&quot; Pompeo said.

Pompeo said US intelligence had kept close tabs on the North Korean program in the past, but that its missile expertise is now growing too quickly to be sure when it will succeed.

This week, North Korea&#39;s deputy UN ambassador declared that Pyongyang would not put its nuclear arsenal nor ballistic missile program on the table unless Washington drops its &quot;hostile&quot; stance.

And Kim&#39;s regime has made no secret of its efforts to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting US mainland cities or bases in the Pacific, conducting regular tests.

Wang called for a resumption of the stalled six-nation talks -- hosted by China and including the United States, Japan, Russia as well as the two Koreas -- aimed at curtailing the North&#39;s atomic ambitions.

&quot;It&#39;s not that easy but it is a direction we need to work together towards,&quot; Wang said of the six-nation talks.

The UN Security Council on Saturday unanimously backed a US-drafted resolution that significantly strengthened sanctions on North Korea, imposing a ban on exports aimed at depriving Pyongyang of $1 billion in annual revenue.

The sweeping measures were the first of that scope to be imposed on North Korea since US President Donald Trump took office and highlighted China&#39;s willingness to punish its Pyongyang ally.

The resolution imposed a full ban on exports of coal, iron and iron ore, lead and lead ore as well as fish and seafood by the cash-starved state -- stripping North Korea of a third of its export earnings estimated at $3 billion per year.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley said the stiffer measures brought the penalty imposed on North Korea for its ballistic missile tests &quot;to a whole new level&quot; and that the council had put Kim &quot;on notice&quot;.

China urges North Korea to make 'smart' decision after sanctions

The UN Security Council on Saturday unanimously adopted a US-drafted resolution that significantly strengthened sanctions on North Korea, with a ban on exports aimed at depriving Pyongyang of $1 billion in annual revenue.

The sweeping measures were the first of that scope to be imposed on North Korea since US President Donald Trump took office and highlighted China&#39;s willingness to punish its Pyongyang ally.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the council that the stiffer measures brought the penalty imposed on North Korea &quot;to a whole new level&quot; and put leader Kim Jong Un &quot;on notice.&quot;

If fully implemented by China and Russia, North Korea&#39;s main economic partners, the measures would tighten the vise around Pyongyang as it seeks to develop its military programs.

The resolution also prevents North Korea from increasing the number of workers it sends abroad whose earnings are another source of revenue for Kim&#39;s regime.

It prohibits all new joint ventures with North Korea, bans new investment in the current joint companies and adds nine North Korean officials and four entities including North Korea&#39;s main foreign exchange bank to the UN sanctions blacklist.

The United States entered into negotiations with China a month ago on the new resolution after North Korea launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile on July 4 which was followed by a second test on July 28.

But the measure does not provide for cuts to oil deliveries to North Korea as initially proposed by the United States -- a move that would have dealt a serious blow to the economy.

The new raft of measures are the seventh set of UN sanctions imposed on North Korea since it first carried out a nuclear test in 2006, but these have failed to compel Pyongyang to change its behavior.

The United States has put heavy pressure on China, which accounts for 90 per cent of trade with North Korea, to enforce the sanctions and the fate of these measures largely hinges on Beijing&#39;s cooperation.

China and Russia had resisted the US push for sanctions, arguing that dialogue with North Korea was the way to persuade Pyongyang to halt its military programs.

The United States flew two B-1B bombers over the Korean peninsula in a show of force after recent North Korean missile tests, the US&nbsp;Air Force said in a statement on Sunday.

North Korea said it conducted another successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Friday that proved its ability to strike America&#39;s mainland, drawing a sharp warning from US&nbsp;President Donald Trump.

The B-1B flight, conducted on Saturday, was in direct response to the missile test and the previous July 3 launch of the &quot;Hwansong-14&quot; rocket, the US&nbsp;statement said. The bombers took off from a US&nbsp;air base in Guam and were joined by Japanese and South Korean fighter jets during the exercise, according to the statement.

&quot;North Korea remains the most urgent threat to regional stability,&quot; Pacific Air Forces commander General Terrence J. O&#39;Shaughnessy said in the statement.

&quot;If called upon, we are ready to respond with rapid, lethal, and overwhelming force at a time and place of our choosing&quot;.

The US&nbsp;has in the past used overflights of the supersonic B1-B &quot;Lancer&quot; bomber as a show of force in response to North Korean missile or nuclear tests.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the midnight test launch of the missile on Friday night and said it was a &quot;stern warning&quot; for the United States that it would not be safe from destruction if it tries to attack, the North&#39;s official KCNA news agency said.

North Korea&#39;s state television broadcast pictures of the launch, showing the missile lifting off in a fiery blast in darkness and Kim cheering with military aides.

China, the North&#39;s main ally, said it opposed North Korea&#39;s missile launches, which it said violate United Nations Security Council resolutions designed to curb Pyongyang&#39;s banned nuclear and missile programmes.

&quot;At the same time, China hopes all parties act with caution, to prevent tensions from continuing to escalate,&quot; China&#39;s foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

However, Trump said he was &quot;very disappointed in China&quot;.

The Hwasong-14, named after the Korean word for Mars, reached an altitude of 3,724.9 km (2,314.6 miles) and flew 998 km (620 miles)for 47 minutes and 12 seconds before landing in the waters off the Korean peninsula&#39;s east coast, KCNA said.

Western experts said calculations based on that flight data and estimates from the US, Japanese and South Korean militaries showed the missile could have been capable of going as far into the United States as Denver and Chicago.

David Wright of the US-based Union of Concerned Scientists wrote in a blog post that if it had flown on a standard trajectory, the missile would have had a range of 10,400 km (6,500 miles).

The B-1B flight, conducted on Saturday, was in direct response to the missile test and the previous July 3 launch of the "Hwansong-14" rocket, the US statement said. The bombers took off from a US air base in Guam and were joined by Japanese and South Korean fighter jets during the exercise, according to the statement. "North Korea remains the most urgent threat to regional stability," Pacific Air Forces commander General Terrence J. O'Shaughnessy said in the statement. "If called upon, we are ready to respond with rapid, lethal, and overwhelming force at a time and place of our choosing". The US has in the past used overflights of the supersonic B1-B "Lancer" bomber as a show of force in response to North Korean missile or nuclear tests. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the midnight test launch of the missile on Friday night and said it was a "stern warning" for the United States that it would not be safe from destruction if it tries to attack, the North's official KCNA news agency said. North Korea's state television broadcast pictures of the launch, showing the missile lifting off in a fiery blast in darkness and Kim cheering with military aides. China, the North's main ally, said it opposed North Korea's missile launches, which it said violate United Nations Security Council resolutions designed to curb Pyongyang's banned nuclear and missile programmes. "At the same time, China hopes all parties act with caution, to prevent tensions from continuing to escalate," China's foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday. However, Trump said he was "very disappointed in China". I am very disappointed in China. Our foolish past leaders have allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet... — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 29, 2017 × ...they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk. We will no longer allow this to continue. China could easily solve this problem! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 29, 2017 × The Hwasong-14, named after the Korean word for Mars, reached an altitude of 3,724.9 km (2,314.6 miles) and flew 998 km (620 miles)for 47 minutes and 12 seconds before landing in the waters off the Korean peninsula's east coast, KCNA said. North Korea refers to the United States as its sworn enemy in its propaganda and has done so since the 1950-53 Korean War in which the Soviet and Chinese-backed North fought against the US-backed South. The isolated country often shows mock-up images of a missile hitting key US landmarks in its media.

US, South Korea conduct joint military drill in response to North Korea's ICBM launch

In a call last month with the Philippines&#39; president, US President Donald Trump described North Korea&#39;s leader Kim Jong Un as a &quot;madman with nuclear weapons&quot; who could not be let on the loose, according to a leaked Philippine transcript of their call.

Trump told Duterte in the April 29 call that the United States would &quot;take care of North Korea,&quot; and had a lot of firepower in the region, although it did not want to use it, according to a transcript of their conversation published by the Washington Post and the investigative news site The Intercept.

The document included a &quot;confidential&quot; cover sheet from the Americas division of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.

A senior US official said the Trump administration did not dispute the accuracy of the transcript and declined to comment further.

Trump requested Duterte&#39;s help in impressing on China, North Korea&#39;s neighbour and only major ally, the need for it to help rein in Kim, the transcript showed.

&quot;We can&#39;t let a madman with nuclear weapons let on the loose like that,&quot; Trump said. &quot;We have a lot of firepower, more than he has, times 20, but we don&#39;t want to use it.&quot;

The US president told Duterte that Washington had sent two nuclear submarines to waters off the Korean peninsula, comments likely to raise further questions about his handling of sensitive information after US officials said Trump discussed intelligence about Islamic State with Russian officials this month.

&quot;We have two submarines - the best in the world. We have two nuclear submarines, not that we want to use them at all,&quot; Trump said.

The Philippines foreign ministry said earlier in a statement that it had no comment on news reports about the leaked transcript.

But it said that under Philippine law there was &quot;criminal and civil liability attached to the hacking, unauthorized disclosure and use of illegally or inadvertently obtained confidential government documents.&quot;

The ministry said it valued the need for transparency, but the release of some information could affect national security and regional stability. &quot;As such, we appeal to the sense of responsibility and patriotism of all concerned,&quot; it added.

North Korea has vowed to develop a nuclear-tipped missile that can strike the U.S. mainland, presenting Trump with perhaps his biggest foreign policy challenge.

It has conducted dozens of missile launches and two nuclear bomb tests since the start of last year.

Trump has said &quot;a major, major conflict&quot; with North Korea is possible and that all options are on the table, but his administration says it wants to resolve the crisis diplomatically with the aid of tougher sanctions.

On May 1, just after the call with Duterte, Trump said he would be &quot;honoured&quot; to meet Kim Jong Un, under the right conditions.

According to the transcript, Trump said he hoped China would act to solve the North Korea problem.

&quot;They really have the means because a great degree of their stuff comes through China,&quot; Trump said. &quot;They (Beijing) are doing certain things, like not accepting calls. But if China doesn&#39;t do it, we will do it,&quot; Trump said, having asked Duterte if he thought China had influence over Kim.

Trump said Kim had the &quot;powder&quot; - an apparent reference to North Korea&#39;s nuclear capability - &quot;but he doesn&#39;t have the delivery system.&quot;

&quot;All his rockets are crashing. That&#39;s the good news. But eventually when he gets that delivery system,&quot; Trump said without finishing his sentence.

While North Korea missile tests have frequently failed, Trump and Duterte spoke before an apparently successful test of a long-range missile this month.

Western experts say that test appeared to have advanced North Korea&#39;s aim of developing a missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland, although the capability was probably still several years away.

The director of the US Defense Intelligence Agency, General Vincent Stewart, said on Tuesday that if left unchecked, North Korea was on an &quot;inevitable&quot; path to obtaining a nuclear-armed missile capable of striking the United States.

Trump calls North Korea's leader 'madman', says he can't be let on the loose

The UN Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea&#39;s latest ballistic missile test and vowed strong measures, including sanctions, to derail Pyongyang&#39;s nuclear weapons programme.

North Korea&#39;s long-term bid to develop a credible nuclear attack threat to the US mainland saw it launch Sunday what appeared to be its longest-range missile yet.

Pyongyang said the new weapon, called the Hwasong-12, was capable of carrying a &quot;heavy nuclear warhead&quot;.

In a unanimous statement backed by the North&#39;s main ally China, the council on Monday vowed to punish Pyongyang&#39;s &quot;highly destabilizing behavior&quot; and demanded a halt to any further nuclear or missile tests.

Pyongyang carried out two atomic tests last year, and has accelerated its missile launch programme, despite tough UN sanctions aimed at denying leader Kim Jong-Un the hard currency needed to fund his weapons ambitions.

&quot;There&#39;s a lot of sanctions left that we can start to do, whether it&#39;s with oil, whether it&#39;s with energy, whether it&#39;s with their maritime ships, exports,&quot; US Ambassador Nikki Haley told ABC television&#39;s &quot;This Week&quot;.

&quot;We can do a lot of different things that we haven&#39;t done yet. So our options are there.&quot;

The United States is in talks with China, Pyongyang&#39;s main trading partner,on a possible new sanctions resolution and the Security Council is expected to hold a closed-door emergency meeting starting around 2000 GMT Tuesday.

&nbsp;&#39;A substantial advance&#39;

Kim personally oversaw Sunday&#39;s test, the official Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said, and pictures by state media showed him gazing at the missile in a hangar before the launch.

The missile was launched on an unusually high trajectory, before splashing down in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

Analysts said the test suggested an actual range of 4,500 kilometres (2,800 miles) or more if flown for maximum distance.

&quot;This is the longest-range missile North Korea has ever tested,&quot; Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in the US told AFP.

On the respected 38 North website, aerospace engineering specialist John Schilling said it appeared to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile that could &quot;reliably strike the US base at Guam&quot; in the Pacific, 3,400 kilometres away.

&quot;More importantly,&quot; he added, it &quot;may represent a substantial advance to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)&quot;.

The North has made no secret of its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States, &nbsp;something President Donald Trump has vowed &quot;won&#39;t happen&quot;.

KCNA cited Kim as saying the North would never succumb to what it called the &quot;highly ridiculous&quot; US strategy of &quot;militarily browbeating only weak countries and nations which have no nukes&quot;.

&quot;If the US dares opt for a military provocation against the DPRK, we are ready to counter it,&quot; it said.

&#39;Reckless provocation&#39;

In April Pyongyang put dozens of missiles on show at a giant military parade through the capital, including one that appeared to be the type launched on Sunday.

There are doubts whether the North can miniaturise a nuclear weapon sufficiently to fit it onto a missile nose cone, and no proof it has mastered the re-entry technology needed to ensure it survives returning into Earth&#39;s atmosphere.

Sunday&#39;s test came less than a week after South Korea elected a new president, Moon Jae-In, who advocates reconciliation with Pyongyang and had expressed a willingness to visit the North to ease tensions.

But Moon slammed the latest launch as a &quot;reckless provocation&quot; and said dialogue would be possible &quot;only if the North changes its attitude&quot;.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the test was dangerous, but warned against attempts to &quot;intimidate&quot; Pyongyang.

Pyongyang could find itself the target of further global censure after security researchers reported Monday signs of a potential North Korean link to cyberattacks that have wreaked havoc on computer networks around the world.

In the first clues of the origin of the massive ransomware attacks, Google researcher Neel Mehta posted computer code that showed similarities between the &quot;WannaCry&quot; malware and a vast hacking effort widely attributed to Pyongyang.

Other experts quickly jumped on this as sign, although not conclusive, that North Korea may have been behind the outbreak.

UN Security Council vows sanctions over North Korea missile test

Two days after North Korea unsuccessfully test-fired a ballistic missile in defiance of pressure by the West, a spokesman for the North&#39;s foreign ministry said Pyongyang was &quot;fully ready to respond to any option taken by the US&quot;.

The regime will continue bolstering its &quot;pre-emptive nuclear attack&quot; capabilities unless Washington scrapped its hostile policies, the spokesman said in a statement carried by the state-run KCNA news agency.

The move comes even as US seemed to be softening its&nbsp;stand on North Korea after weeks of war rhetoric after US President Donald Trump offered some backhanded praise for North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, calling him &quot;a pretty smart cookie&quot; in a television interview that aired Sunday.

Trump said he had &quot;no idea&quot; whether Kim was sane or not, but said the North Korean leader had faced a formidable challenge in taking over the country at a reported age of 27 after his father&#39;s death in 2011.

&quot;He&#39;s dealing with obviously very tough people, in particular, the generals and others. And at a very young age, he was able to assume power,&quot; Trump said in the interview with CBS&#39;s &quot;Face the Nation.&quot;

However, North Korea hit back on Monday, declaring,&nbsp;&quot;The DPRK&#39;s measures for bolstering the nuclear force to the maximum will be taken in a consecutive and successive way at any moment and any place decided by its supreme leadership,&quot;&nbsp;apparently referring to a sixth nuclear test and using the North&#39;s official name, the Democratic Republic of Korea.

The Korean peninsula has seen military drills being carried out by the US and South Korea&nbsp;in a bid to keep the pressure on the Kim government. South Korea and the United States wrapped up their annual large-scale military drills on Sunday but continued a separate joint naval exercise that has triggered dire threats from nuclear-armed North Korea.

A French warfare ship arrived in Japan on Saturday ahead of the first joint exercise among Japan, France, the US and the UK. &nbsp;

The amphibious assault ship arrived at the Sasebo naval base in south-western Japan to conduct military drills from May 3 through May 22 in the waters surrounding Japan as well as the Pacific islands of Guam and Northern Marianas, according to Japan&#39;s Self-Defence Forces.

As many as 700 military personnel are expected to take part in the Jeanne d&#39;Arc mission for young officers, also to be joined by French frigate Courbet.

Will continue to bolster pre-emptive nuclear attack capabilities, warns North Korea

North Korea unsuccessfully test-fired a ballistic missile on Saturday from a region north of its capital, Pyongyang, South Korea&#39;s military said, defying intense pressure from the United States and the reclusive state&#39;s main ally, China.

The test came as U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned the United Nations Security Council that failure to curb North Korea`s nuclear and ballistic missile programs could lead to &#39;catastrophic consequences&#39;.

US&nbsp;and South Korean officials said the test appeared to have failed, in what would be a fourth successive unsuccessful missile test since March.&nbsp;

US&nbsp;officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the missile was probably a medium-range missile known as a KN-17 and appears to have broken up within minutes of taking off.&nbsp;

Tension had spiked on the Korean peninsula over concerns the North may conduct the test-launch of a long-range missile or its sixth nuclear test around the time of the April 15 anniversary of its state founder`s birth or the day marking the founding of its military earlier this week.

The timing of the latest launch suggests it was calculated to send a certain message as Pyongyang remains under intense attention of world powers, said Kim Dong-yub, an expert at Kyungnam University`s Institute of Far Eastern Studies in Seoul.

&ldquo;It was planned at a complicated timing around the end of the South Korea-U.S. joint military drills, the United States talking about military options and the announcement of North Korea policies and the Security Council meeting,&rdquo; Kim said.&nbsp;

South Korean and U.S. forces have been conducting annual military drills since the start of March that conclude at the end of April.&nbsp;

In a show of force, the United States is sending the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group to waters off the Korean peninsula, where it will join the USS Michigan, a nuclear submarine that docked in South Korea on Tuesday.&nbsp;

US&nbsp;President Donald Trump told Reuters in an interview on Thursday a &quot;major, major conflict&quot; with North Korea was possible over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.&nbsp;

Trump praised Chinese leader Xi Jinping for &quot;trying very hard&quot; to rein in Pyongyang.

But both China and Russia rebuked Washington`s threat of military force at a meeting of the UN&nbsp;Security Council on the matter on Friday.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the 15-member council it was not only up to China to solve the North Korean problem.

&quot;The key to solving the nuclear issue on the peninsula does not lie in the hands of the Chinese side,&quot; Wang told the council in blunt remarks that Tillerson later rebuffed.

The UN&nbsp;Security Council is likely to start discussing a statement to condemn the missile launch, said diplomats, adding that it was unlikely to be issued on Friday. The Security Council traditionally condemns all missile launches by Pyongyang.

&quot;It could have happened today exactly because we had the meeting,&quot; Italian U.N. Ambassador Sebastiano Cardi, chair of the Security Council`s North Korean sanctions committee, told reporters when hearing of the test. &quot;It`s illegal, it should not be done, it`s another provocative action by North Korea.&rdquo;

Neighbouring Japan said the &quot;unacceptable&quot; launch clearly violated UN&nbsp;resolutions and said it had lodged a strong protest with North Korea.

US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the missile was probably a medium-range missile known as a KN-17 and appears to have broken up within minutes of taking off. “It was planned at a complicated timing around the end of the South Korea-U.S. joint military drills, the United States talking about military options and the announcement of North Korea policies and the Security Council meeting,” Kim said. South Korean and U.S. forces have been conducting annual military drills since the start of March that conclude at the end of April. In a show of force, the United States is sending the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group to waters off the Korean peninsula, where it will join the USS Michigan, a nuclear submarine that docked in South Korea on Tuesday. US President Donald Trump told Reuters in an interview on Thursday a "major, major conflict" with North Korea was possible over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Trump praised Chinese leader Xi Jinping for "trying very hard" to rein in Pyongyang. But both China and Russia rebuked Washington`s threat of military force at a meeting of the UN Security Council on the matter on Friday. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the 15-member council it was not only up to China to solve the North Korean problem. "The key to solving the nuclear issue on the peninsula does not lie in the hands of the Chinese side," Wang told the council in blunt remarks that Tillerson later rebuffed. The UN Security Council is likely to start discussing a statement to condemn the missile launch, said diplomats, adding that it was unlikely to be issued on Friday. The Security Council traditionally condemns all missile launches by Pyongyang. "It could have happened today exactly because we had the meeting," Italian U.N. Ambassador Sebastiano Cardi, chair of the Security Council`s North Korean sanctions committee, told reporters when hearing of the test. "It`s illegal, it should not be done, it`s another provocative action by North Korea.” Neighbouring Japan said the "unacceptable" launch clearly violated UN resolutions and said it had lodged a strong protest with North Korea. North Korea test-fires ballistic missile in defiance of world pressure

The United States, its allies and China are working together on a range of responses to North Korea&#39;s latest attempted ballistic missile test, US President Donald Trump&#39;s national security adviser said on Sunday, citing what he called an international consensus to act.

&quot;We are working together with our allies and partners and with the Chinese leadership to develop a range of options,&quot; national security adviser H R&nbsp;McMaster said on ABC&#39;s &quot;This Week&quot; program.

&quot;This latest missile test just fits into a pattern of provocative and destabilising and threatening behaviour on the part of the North Korean regime,&quot; McMaster said.

He said the president has asked the national security council to integrate the efforts of the Defense and State departments and US intelligence agencies to develop options if &quot;this pattern of behaviour continues and if the North Korean Regime refuses to denuclearise.&quot;

&quot;There is an international consensus now, including the Chinese leadership, that this is a situation that just cannot continue,&quot; McMaster said.

Tensions have been steadily rising as Trump takes a hard rhetorical line with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has rebuffed admonitions from China and proceeded with nuclear and missile programs seen by Washington as a direct threat.

Trump on Sunday acknowledged that the softer line he has taken on China&#39;s management of its currency was linked to China&#39;s help on the North Korea issue.

South Korea said the North&#39;s latest show of force &quot;threatened the whole world&quot;.

But a US foreign policy adviser travelling with Pence on Air Force Two sought to defuse some of the tension, saying the test of what was believed to be a medium-range missile had come as no surprise.

&quot;We had good intelligence before the launch and good intelligence after the launch,&quot; the adviser told reporters on condition of anonymity.

&quot;It&#39;s a failed test. It follows another failed test. So really no need to reinforce their failure. We don&#39;t need to expend any resources against that.&quot;The adviser said the missile&#39;s flight lasted four or five seconds.

Pence, addressing an Easter service with American troops in South Korea, said the US commitment to South Korea was unwavering.

Tensions Rise

Trump&#39;s decision to order a cruise missile strike on a Syrian airfield this month, in response to what he said was Syria&#39;s use of chemical weapons, raised questions about his plans for reclusive North Korea.

Pyongyang has conducted several missile and nuclear tests in defiance of UN sanctions, and regularly threatens to destroy South Korea and the United States.

&quot;The president has made clear that he will not accept the United States and its allies and partners in the region being under threat from this hostile regime with nuclear weapons,&quot; McMaster told ABC.

But McMaster, who was speaking from Kabul, Afghanistan, acknowledged the likelihood of North Korean retaliation if Washington uses military force in an attempt to stop its weapons programs.

&quot;What (is) particularly difficult about -- about dealing with this regime, is that it is unpredictable,&quot; he said.

&quot;It&#39;s time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully,&quot; he said.

South Korea, which hosts 28,500 US troops and holds a presidential election on May 9, warned of punitive action if the Sunday launch led to further provocation.

US, allies & China mulling responses to North Korea missile tests: McMaster

A fresh North Korean missile test failed almost immediately after it was launched on Sunday, the US military said amid increasing tensions with the regime over its nuclear weapons ambitions.

&quot;The missile blew up almost immediately,&quot; the US Defence Department said of the early morning launch which is likely to be seen as something of an embarrassment for North Korea.

South Korean also confirmed that an &quot;unidentified type of missile&quot; had been launched from Sinpo area in the South Hamkyong Province and that the launch had failed.

Neither country was able to determine immediately what kind of missile was being tested.

The failed missile test came a day after North Korea displayed nearly 60 missiles -- including what is suspected to be a new intercontinental ballistic missile -- at a giant military parade to mark the 105th birthday of its founder Kim Il-Sung.

The parade was held in front of the cameras of invited world media, who were still in Pyongyang when Sunday&#39;s test failure was detected.

Geo-spatial images from last week had shown North Korea possibly preparing a nuclear test, to coincide with Kim Il-Sung&#39;s anniversary.

The latest missile test attempt comes just hours ahead of a visit by Vice President Mike Pence to Seoul, where the nuclear issue will be top of the agenda at talks with South Korea&#39;s acting president Hwang Kyo-Ahn.

Pence&#39;s first visit to South Korea -- which will be followed by stopovers in Japan, Indonesia and Australia -- was conceived months ago, but could hardly come at a time of higher tension when Pyongyang&#39;s rogue atomic ambitions have come into sharp focus.

US President Donald Trump has threatened unilateral action against North Korea if China fails to help curb its neighbour&#39;s nuclear programme.

China, the North&#39;s sole major ally, and Russia have both urged restraint. Beijing&#39;s foreign minister Wang Yi warned on Friday that &quot;conflict could break out at any moment&quot;.

Trump, who has said he will prevent Pyongyang from its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile that can hit US, sent an aircraft carrier-led strike group to the Korean peninsula to press his point.

Intelligence officials have warned North Korea could be less than two years away from achieving the ability to strike the continental US, AFP reported.

The North has reiterated its constant refrain that it is ready for &quot;war&quot; with the US, with its army vowing a &quot;merciless&quot; response to any provocation and accusing Trump of entering into a &quot;path of open threat and blackmail&quot;.

The North is also reportedly preparing a sixth nuclear test, with satellite images showing its main nuclear site &quot;primed and ready,&quot; AFP reported citing specialist US website 38North.

The UN Security Council has imposed six sets of sanctions against the North since its first nuclear test in 2006 -- all of which have failed to halt its drive for what it insists are defensive weapons.

North Korea carried out five nuclear tests &ndash; two of them last year &ndash; and multiple missile launches, one of which saw three rockets come down in waters provocatively close to Japan last month.

US confirms failed North Korea missile test as tensions escalate

China has agreed to &quot;strong&quot; new measures to punish North Korea if it carries out a nuclear test, Seoul said today after the US signalled it may act to shut down Pyongyang&#39;s weapons programme.

South Korea&#39;s top nuclear envoy made the comment after talks with his Chinese counterpart Wu Dawei, as the US sent a naval strike group to the region in a show of force.

&quot;We agreed that there should be strong additional measures based on UN Security Council resolutions if the North pushes ahead with a nuclear test or an ICBM launch despite warnings from the international community,&quot; Kim Hong-Kyun told reporters.

The North may stage a &quot;strategic provocation&quot; to mark key political dates this month, Kim said, adding that Wu&#39;s visit would serve as a &quot;strong warning&quot; against Pyongyang. Wu did not speak to the media after the talks.

China is the isolated country&#39;s sole major ally and economic lifeline, and Beijing in February suspended all coal imports from the North in punishment for Pyongyang&#39;s latest missile test.

Speculation of an imminent nuclear test is brewing as the North marks anniversaries including the 105th birthday of its founding leader on Saturday -- sometimes celebrated with a demonstration of military might.

President Donald Trump, fresh from a missile strike on Syria that was widely interpreted as a warning to North Korea, has asked his advisors for a range of options to rein in its ambitions, a top US official said yesterday.

The talks between Kim and Wu came shortly after Trump hosted Chinese leader Xi Jinping for a summit at which he pressed Beijing to do more to curb the North&#39;s nuclear ambitions.

&quot;(We) are prepared to chart our own course if this is something China is just unable to coordinate with us,&quot; US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said after the summit.

He added however that Beijing had indicated a willingness to act on the issue.

&quot;We need to allow them time to take actions,&quot; Tillerson said, adding that Washington had no intention of attempting to remove the regime of Kim Jong-Un.

The meeting between Xi and Trump came on the heels of yet another missile test by the North, which fired a medium-range ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Wednesday.

The US Navy strike group Carl Vinson cancelled a planned trip to Australia this weekend, heading toward the Korean peninsula instead, in a move that will raise tensions in the region.

Seoul and Washington are also conducting joint military drills, an annual exercise which is seen by the North as a practice for war.

Pyongyang is on a quest to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the US mainland with a nuclear warhead, and has so far staged five nuclear tests, two of them last year.

Satellite imagery analysis suggests it could be preparing for a sixth, with US intelligence officials warning that Pyongyang could be less than two years away from its goal of striking the continental United States.

China, South Korea vow strong measures to prevent North's nuclear test

The European Union on Thursday imposed additional sanctions on North Korea over nuclear and ballistic missile tests which it said threatened international security.

The move comes at a time of increased tensions as North Korea presses ahead with nuclear and missile programmes which have badly rattled the United States and its allies Japan and South Korea.

North Korea is high on the agenda of the first summit later Thursday between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, with Washington pressing Beijing to do more to rein in Pyongyang.

In a statement, the EU called on North Korea to resume talks with the international community,&nbsp;&quot;to cease its provocations and to abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programmes as well as other weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programmes.&quot;

It said it imposed the new sanctions because North Korea&#39;s actions &quot;violate multiple UN resolutions and constitute a grave threat to international peace and security in the region and beyond.&quot;

The sanctions include extending an investment ban to &quot;new sectors, namely the conventional arms-related industry, metallurgy and metalworking, and aerospace,&quot; it said.&nbsp;

Additionally, they &quot;prohibit the provision of certain services to persons or entities... namely computer services and services linked to mining and manufacturing in the chemical, mining and refining industry.&quot;

Four people were added to the EU&#39;s visa ban and asset freeze blacklist, bringing the total to 41. Their names will be published Friday.

Seven entities remain subject to an asset freeze.

The EU has steadily increased its sanctions against North Korea, the previous move coming in late February with Pyongyang in the spotlight after the assassination at the Kuala Lumpur airport of Kim Jong-Nam, the estranged half-brother of leader Kim Jong-Un.

EU sanctions against North Korea date back to 2006 and are part of international efforts to halt a nuclear and ballistic missile programme which experts say is intended to give Pyongyang the capability to hit the US mainland.

EU imposes additional sanctions on North Korea over nuclear, missile tests

A North Korean missile appeared to have exploded on Wednesday just after it was launched, the US&nbsp;and South Korean militaries said after detecting the latest in a series of weapons tests by the nuclear-armed state that have alarmed the region.

The launch attempt was made from near the city of Wonsan, on North Korea&#39;s east coast, the same place from where it launched several intermediate-range missiles last year, all but one of which failed.

&quot;US&nbsp;Pacific Command detected what we assess was a failed North Korean missile launch attempt ... in the vicinity of Kalma,&quot; Commander Dave Benham, a spokesman for U.S. Pacific Command, said in a statement, referring to an air field in Wonsan.

It appeared to have exploded just after it was launched

A North Korean missile appeared to have exploded on Wednesday just after it was launched, the US and South Korean militaries said after detecting the latest in a series of weapons tests by the nuclear-armed state that have alarmed the region. The launch attempt was made from near the city of Wonsan, on North Korea's east coast, the same place from where it launched several intermediate-range missiles last year, all but one of which failed. "US Pacific Command detected what we assess was a failed North Korean missile launch attempt ... in the vicinity of Kalma," Commander Dave Benham, a spokesman for U.S. Pacific Command, said in a statement, referring to an air field in Wonsan. "A missile appears to have exploded within seconds of launch," Benham said, adding that work was being carried out on a more detailed assessment. North Korea tests another missile, it fails

China has not given up hope for a new round of diplomacy with North Korea to prevent Pyongyang making further advances in its weapons programme in violation of UN resolutions, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday.

North Korea said this week it had successfully test-fired a new type of medium- to long-range ballistic missile. State-run KCNA news agency said leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test of the weapon capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

&quot;There are still opportunities for the resumption of six-party talks,&quot; Wang told the Munich Security Conference, referring to talks with the United States, South Korea, China, Japan and Russia. &quot;We should work to bring the parties back to the table.&quot;

In 2005, North Korea reached an agreement with those six countries to suspend its nuclear programme in return for diplomatic rewards and energy assistance.

Negotiations collapsed after the last round of talks in 2008, with North Korea declaring the deal void after refusing inspections to verify compliance and leading to a series of new sanctions on Pyongyang, as well as international condemnation.

&quot;We hope for all parties concerned will refrain from taking further actions that may lead to escalations of the tensions,&quot; Wang said.

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, including two last year, although its claims to be able to miniaturise a nuclear weapon to be mounted on a missile have never been verified independently.

China hopes for resumption of six-party talks to stop North Korea's weapons programme

The US President Donald Trump has said that he would deal &quot;very strongly&quot; with North Korea after the country test-fired a ballistic missile.

Trump was addressing a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

&quot;Obviously North Korea is a big, big problem and we will deal with that very strongly,&quot; Trump said during the press conference.

But his response didn&#39;t mention as to what specific action he would initiate against the North Korean regime for violating the UN Security Council resolution by test-firing a&nbsp;ballistic missile.

The latest provocation is an addition to a string of such test-launches by North Korea which has raised tensions in the region especially&nbsp;among South Korea and Japan, two of the closest allies of the US in the region. &nbsp; &nbsp;

The North Korean regime said that it had launched a medium to long-range ballistic missile on Sunday.

Speaking on the issue of immigration and border security, Trump continued to take a hard line saying he can&#39;t let in people who prove to be a security risk for the country hinting at further tightening of the vetting process.

&quot;On the home front, we have to create borders. We have to let people that can love our country in, and I want to do that. We want to have a big beautiful open door and we want people to come in and come in our country, but we cannot let the wrong people in and I will not allow that to happen during this administration,&quot; Trump said.

The Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau said that he was not in the US to lecture Trump.

&quot;The last thing Canadians expect is for me to come down and lecture another country on how they choose to govern themselves. My role our responsibility is to continue to govern in such a way that reflects Canadians approach and be a positive example in the world,&quot; Trudeau said.

The United States, Japan and South Korea had&nbsp;requested an urgent UN Security Council meeting to discuss the latest missile test.

Trump vows 'very strong' action against North Korea for test-firing missile

Pyongyang today conducted what was believed to be another failed test of &quot;a powerful medium-range missile capable of hitting US bases as far away as Guam&quot;, the South Korean military was quoted as saying by international news agency AFP.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The failed attempt by North Korea to launch the missile was detected at 5:00 pm CDT/2200 GMT on Wednesday from the northwestern city of Kusong, US Strategic Command also said, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The missile had exploded shortly after take-off at around 6:30 am Pyongyang time (2200 GMT) on Wednesday, analysis by South Korean and US military monitors suggested, the joint chiefs of Staff said in a statement.&nbsp;
