Nissan Motor Company is working towards rebranding its India story with a robust business and product strategy for FY24-FY26. The company has had only two products in its India portfolio for some time now - the Magnite and X-Trail; and there have been no new launches since December of 2020. However, the company now plans to re-launch its CBU (Completely Built-up) business model here and expand its product offerings with prime focus on the growing SUV market.&nbsp;

The Magnite SUV, launched in 2020, was a runaway success for Nissan in India, surpassing cumulative sales of 1.5 lakh units till date. The company now aims to replicate this success with its new offerings. Besides the re-launch of the CBU business, the carmaker is working on bringing in three new 'Made-in-India' models by FY26. These will be manufactured in its Alliance plant in Chennai along with the Magnite.

One of these will be an affordable mass-market electric vehicle, Nissan's first in India. The other two will be a 5-seater and a 7-seater C-SUVs for which the company has already invested $600 million in R&amp;D. Another $100 million has been invested in the R&amp;D of the upgraded 2024 Magnite compact SUV, which has been launched at a starting and introductory price point of INR 6 lakh (ex-showroom).&nbsp;

Nissan currently has only 1% of the domestic market share but going forward, it aims to triple this share with increase in volume. It is also looking to expand its domestic touchpoints to 300+ by the end of FY24 by entering untapped markets. Along with elevating domestic business, a major focus area is export.&nbsp;

The three upcoming models will also be exported from India to overseas markets in alignment with the company's 'Make-in-India, Make for the World' philosophy. "We are aiming for a 3X volume growth with the launch of three new models. These will be fully designed and manufactured in India and exported from here, making India an export hub for Nissan vehicles," said Saurabh Vatsa, MD, Nissan Motor India.&nbsp;

With the launch of the 2024 Magnite in both Right-Hand Drive and Left-Hand Drive versions, the company has expanded its export market to 65+ countries, reinforcing India as a major export hub for Nissan. "Introducing Left-Hand Drive Magnite has opened up a whole new world (of opportunities) for us," Vatsa said.&nbsp;

Japanese automakers Honda Motor and Nissan Motor are spearheading efforts to establish supply chains for recycled plastic in the automotive industry, according to information obtained by Nikkei. This initiative is driven by the dual goals of enhancing vehicle sustainability and preparing for anticipated European regulations.

Plastic plays a crucial role in automobile manufacturing, being utilized in various components such as bumpers and interior parts. The European Commission proposed in 2023 that at least 25 per cent of the plastic used in new vehicles should be recycled. This regulation could come into full effect as early as 2031, potentially barring non-compliant vehicles from being sold in the European Union.

Currently, the automotive sector's use of recycled plastic is relatively low. According to 2022 data from the Tokyo-based Plastic Waste Management Institute, auto parts accounted for only about 3 per cent of all plastic recycled into new products in Japan. The time-consuming process of sorting plastic pieces from scrapped vehicles has been a significant barrier to increased recycling in the automotive industry.

Honda is taking a proactive approach by aiming to establish a recycled plastic supply chain by around 2040. Japanese automaker Nissan's shareholders on Tuesday re-elected their chief executive and other board nominees, days after reports emerged of a major fissure within the top hierarchy of the company&nbsp;and allegations of corporate surveillance.

At the first annual meeting since reaching a&nbsp;new deal with alliance partner Renault,&nbsp;Chief Executive Makoto Uchida and 10 other nominees of the board received the full support of the shareholders.&nbsp;

Uchida receiving the long rope comes despite allegations of him carrying out surveillance against his deputy, Ashwani Gupta surfaced in April, earlier this year. Reportedly, Hari Nada, a senior adviser at Nissan wrote a letter to the&nbsp;independent directors on the Japanese automaker's board, revealing the surveillance saga.&nbsp;

In the letter, Nada said Uchida carried out surveillance over a long period in an attempt&nbsp;to acquire leverage to remove an executive and board member that he regarded as an obstacle to reaching a new deal with alliance partner Renault. Last week, the company formally launched an investigation into the matter, according to a Reuters report.&nbsp;

Gupta attended the Tuesday meeting which, incidentally was his last day at the company. His departure was announced last week and the company did not name a new COO to replace him while unveiling the executive line-up.&nbsp;

Japanese carmaker Nissan will buy a stake of up to 15 per cent&nbsp;in Renault's electric vehicle (EV) unit Ampere, the pair said on Monday, in a reboot of a long and sometimes contentious alliance that will also create more common car platforms.

The agreement, which came after months of tense talks, includes the previously announced reduction of Renault's stake in Nissan to put the two on a more equal footing, extending for an initial period of 15 years a partnership that has been in place since 1999 and also includes Mitsubishi Motors.

"Previously the alliance was more about synergies... and global volumes," Nissan chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta told Reuters. "The next 15 years is about how we become the number one value creator for each other and our shareholders."

The lopsided relationship between the two car makers, which was deeply strained by the 2018 arrest of its architect and former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, amid a financial scandal, had long been a source of friction among Nissan executives.

While Renault bailed out Nissan two decades ago, it is the smaller automaker by sales.

"I consider that what we have agreed is a much better set-up than what we have had in the last past few years," Renault CEO Luca de Meo told a presentation of the new-look alliance in London.

"We have now a new governance scheme that is much more straightforward, we can now operate like a normal company. Seen from Renault, (it) is about regaining some strategic agility without breaking necessarily the ties and the synergies that were existing."

The size of Nissan's investment or even a firm commitment to put money into the EV unit, Renault's flagship business which is due to be listed on the market, has so far been unclear.

"We regard Ampere as an enabler for Nissan to participate in new business opportunities in Europe," Nissan chief executive Makoto Uchida told reporters and analysts.

No financial details were disclosed regarding the valuation of the business, with de Meo saying the market would decide. Some sources have indicated it could be worth up to 10 billion euros.

Mitsubishi CEO Takao Kato said Ampere will also form part of its European EV strategy and the company would "further study" its share participation.

Renault will reduce its stake in Nissan to 15% from around 43% by transferring a 28per cent&nbsp;stake into a French trust.

The French carmaker will have the flexibility to sell the Nissan shares held in the trust but "it has no obligation to sell the shares within a specific pre-determined period of time," the statement on Monday said.

De Meo said Renault will act in "good faith" and sell off its Nissan shares in "an orderly manner". When it does sell, Nissan will have a right of first offer.

The companies detailed planned joint projects in Europe, India and Latin America, and will work together in the EV business, electronics and solid-state batteries.

Renault's shares were down around 0.7% by 1225 GMT.

On Tuesday, the Japanese car manufacturing company, Nissan Motor Co Ltd said that they sold their business in Russia, Nissan Manufacturing Russia LLC to state-owned entity NAMI for one euro ($0.97), incurring a loss of at least $687 million.&nbsp;

This comes months after the company was forced to shut down production in Moscow following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade indicated that the Japanese company will transfer its shares to the state-owned entity and the deal allows the Japanese car manufacturing company to have the right to buy the business back within six years.

This move adds Nissan to the long list of companies that exited Moscow amid the ongoing invasion.&nbsp;

The sale to NAMI also includes Nissan’s production and research facilities based in St Petersburg as well as the sales and marketing centre in Moscow, said the report by Reuters. This deal was “of great significance for the industry,” said the Russian trade minister Denis Manturov in a statement.

According to Nissan, the production in the St Petersburg plant was halted in March itself due to supply chain issues but the local unit had since continued to monitor the situation. However, there was “no visibility” of change in the external environment which prompted the company’s exit, they added.&nbsp;

The Japanese car manufacturing company also said it expected a loss of at least 100 billion yen ($687 million) but reportedly did not change its earnings forecast for the financial year ending in March, said the report. However, Renault which owns nearly 43% of Nissan said that this decision would lead to a hit of at least 331 million euros to its net income in the second half of 2022.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, the Japanese car manufacturing company, Nissan Motor Co Ltd said that they sold their business in Russia, Nissan Manufacturing Russia LLC to state-owned entity NAMI for one euro ($0.97), incurring a loss of at least $687 million. This comes months after the company was forced to shut down production in Moscow following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On the other hand, Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade indicated that the Japanese company will transfer its shares to the state-owned entity and the deal allows the Japanese car manufacturing company to have the right to buy the business back within six years. This move adds Nissan to the long list of companies that exited Moscow amid the ongoing invasion. This deal was “of great significance for the industry,” said the Russian trade minister Denis Manturov in a statement. According to Nissan, the production in the St Petersburg plant was halted in March itself due to supply chain issues but the local unit had since continued to monitor the situation. However, there was “no visibility” of change in the external environment which prompted the company’s exit, they added. The Japanese car manufacturing company also said it expected a loss of at least 100 billion yen ($687 million) but reportedly did not change its earnings forecast for the financial year ending in March, said the report. However, Renault which owns nearly 43% of Nissan said that this decision would lead to a hit of at least 331 million euros to its net income in the second half of 2022. Notably, this also comes as the two companies, on Monday, said that Nissan was considering investing in the new electric vehicle venture by Renault. Nissan Motor Co Ltd is looking to restructure its more than 20-year-old alliance with Renault, and has asked the French car firm to cut its stake in the Japanese automaker, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. Renault owns about 43 per cent of Nissan, while the Japanese firm owns 15 per cent of its top shareholder, minus the voting rights.

In June, Nissan had for the first time revealed that its alliance pact with top shareholder Renault keeps the latter from unilaterally increasing its stake beyond 44.4 per cent.&nbsp;

Their talks cover the question of whether Nissan will join Renault's new unit being set up for electric vehicle (EV) assets in exchange for its French ally winding down the Nissan stake, the paper said.

The paper further informed that Nissan's Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta, who was one of the firm's executives to visit France last month, had discussed whether the Japanese car maker would invest in Renault's new EV business.

Renault is trying to match up to its competitors, such as Tesla and Volkswagen, in the race for clean driving by planning to split its EV and combustion engine businesses. It expects to unveil a detailed blueprint for the new EV entity this autumn.
