A Russia-based software company named 'Pushwood' has managed to deceive the US authorities for years by claiming to be a US-based company and pushing its codes into more than 8,000 apps that were freely available on Apple and Google Play stores.

A Russia-based software company named 'Pushwood' has managed to deceive the US authorities for years by claiming to be a US-based company and pushing its codes into more than 8,000 apps that were freely available on Apple and Google Play stores. The expose made by Reuters stated that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the apex health body of the country and the Army used applications that carried the codes developed by the Russian company. Read more: India: Russian man arrested for hacking JEE Mains software to help students cheat After coming to know about the revelation, CDC said it had been 'deceived'. The health body added it instantly removed seven apps that were being used by the public, citing security issues. Meanwhile, US Army informed it removed an app carrying the 'Pushwood' code in March earlier this year, owing to the same concerns. Reportedly, soldiers at one of the major combat army bases had been using the app. Apart from CDC and Army, the footballing body UEFA, USA's National Rifle Association (NRA), Britain's Labour Party and consumer goods giant Unilever used apps with Pushwood code installed on it. WATCH | Gravitas: Hackers attack U.S. federal agencies × Read more: Russian hacker group launches cyberattacks on various United States airports Notably, Pushwood's website states it has more than 2.3 billion devices listed in its database. While Reuters' investigation has not established any direct or malicious intent, it certainly doesn't mean that the risk of data being leaked to the Kremlin may have reduced. Russia is the global leader in hacking and cyber-espionage and given the deterioration in US-Russia relations in the backdrop of the Ukraine conflict, such a connection cannot be easily whisked away. According to the publication, Pushwood is based in the Siberian town of Novosibirsk. However, the company allegedly managed to con its way through by claiming to be based in California, Maryland and Washington DC in different regulatory filings and on social media. The company employs around 40 people and has reported revenues in excess of $2.4 million in the previous financial year. While allegations surrounding the company gain pace, Max Konev, Pushwood's founder in an email said he had not tried to mask the company's Russian origins. "I am proud to be Russian and I would never hide this," said Konev whilst adding his company "has no connection with the Russian government of any kind." Apart from Sam, other high-ranking executives at the company will also be probed for any potential breaking of securities laws. The big tech giants of Silicon Valley are on a spree to slash their headcount. Facebook, the parent company of Meta earlier this month laid off as many as 11,000 employees while Twitter slashed half of its workforce. The employees fired, especially those on the H-1B visa have an arduous task in hand as the clock is ticking for them. H-1B visa is a type of visa issued in the US which allows employers to hire foreign workers in speciality occupations. However, according to rules, when an H-1B visa holder is terminated from their job, they have a 60-day grace period which allows them to maintain the status quo and search for a new job. Once the said period lapses and the visa holder is not able to obtain employment, they are expected to return to their country of origin. The original employer is supposed to bear the cost of their return ticket under the H-1B visa policy. Read more: Meta layoffs explained: Why did Meta fire 13% of its employees? The crew of detained Crude Oil tanker MT Heroic Idun are being questioned by Nigerian authorities, while the ship remains anchored in Bonny, in the West African nation. Those in touch with the ship's crew and their families told WION that 16 of the 26 crew members have been taken ashore for questioning, while the remaining ten are on board the vessel. The very large crude carrier and its crew have been detained in West Africa since August this year, which has caused severe agony for the sailors and their families.&nbsp;

Authorities in Nigeria have levelled serious allegations. They claim that in August of this year, the vessel attempted oil theft in Nigerian waters and that it sailed on without an identifying flag, despite orders from the Nigerian Navy. The vessel is said to have eventually sailed towards Equatorial Guinea, where it was detained by the country's authorities.&nbsp;

Manoj Joy from the Sailors Society has been maintaining contact with the ship's Indian crew and providing moral support for their families in India. The former sailor told WION that the allegations made by the Nigerian side are baseless and that it has become common practice for authorities around the world to treat seafarers as a soft target.&nbsp;

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/india-calls-for-early-resolution-as-16-sailors-onboard-detained-ship-enter-nigeria-533595">India calls for early resolution as detained ship with 16 Indian sailors onboard reaches Nigeria</a>

According to OSM Group, the ship manager for Heroic Idun, the vessel was ordered to load a cargo of oil in early August from the Akpo terminal in Nigeria. Whilst waiting for the necessary clearance papers after having tendered notice of readiness (being ready to receive cargo) in line with voyage orders received from charterers, the Nigerian navy approached the vessel under cover of darkness in a way that caused serious concerns and it was believed to be an attempted piracy attack. The vessel following ‘Best Management Practice’ escaped from the area and out into international waters.&nbsp;

The company added that the tanker was interdicted in International waters by the Navy of Equatorial Guinea, for allegedly not displaying the flag of that country. "A fine was paid at the end of September against a promise of release of the vessel and its crew. However, both the ship and crew remain in captivity" OSM said.&nbsp;

OSM Group CEO, Finn Amund Norbye said, “The vessel and its 26 multinational crew members have now been detained in Equatorial Guinea for more than 80 days. The seafarers have been treated as criminals, without any formal charges or legal process for close to 3 months, it is nothing short of a shocking maritime injustice.”&nbsp;
MT Heroic Idun is manned by a 26-member crew, which comprises 16 Indians, eight Sri Lankans, one Filipino and a Polish national. The families of the Indian sailors were hopeful that the crew would be released and could return home from Equatorial Guinea. However, the vessel being taken back to Nigeria increases the families' agonising wait. It is feared that the crew might have to face trial in the West African country, which could pose further challenges to their return home. Some crew members are said to have possessed their mobile phones till the bygone weekend and it is believed that those devices have now been confiscated by Nigerian authorities.&nbsp;

Muraleedharan, met the family of one of the sailors in Kerala and assured that the Indian Government was taking earnest efforts to secure the release of the sailors. He added that the Indian Embassy officials in Nigeria, were in constant touch with the Indian crew and that efforts were on to secure the crew, as permitted by International law.

Rolf Thore Roppestad, the CEO of Gard, the ship's insurance firm, said, “the treatment received by the crew shows a blatant disregard for basic human rights and international law. They have been held for more than 80 days, without any charges and without any legal representation locally to protect their interests. The situation is quite frankly outrageous.”&nbsp;

The crew of detained Crude Oil tanker MT Heroic Idun are being questioned by Nigerian authorities, while the ship remains anchored in Bonny, in the West African nation.

The crew of detained Crude Oil tanker MT Heroic Idun are being questioned by Nigerian authorities, while the ship remains anchored in Bonny, in the West African nation. Those in touch with the ship's crew and their families told WION that 16 of the 26 crew members have been taken ashore for questioning, while the remaining ten are on board the vessel. The very large crude carrier and its crew have been detained in West Africa since August this year, which has caused severe agony for the sailors and their families. Authorities in Nigeria have levelled serious allegations. They claim that in August of this year, the vessel attempted oil theft in Nigerian waters and that it sailed on without an identifying flag, despite orders from the Nigerian Navy. The vessel is said to have eventually sailed towards Equatorial Guinea, where it was detained by the country's authorities. Manoj Joy from the Sailors Society has been maintaining contact with the ship's Indian crew and providing moral support for their families in India. The former sailor told WION that the allegations made by the Nigerian side are baseless and that it has become common practice for authorities around the world to treat seafarers as a soft target. Also read | India calls for early resolution as detained ship with 16 Indian sailors onboard reaches Nigeria According to OSM Group, the ship manager for Heroic Idun, the vessel was ordered to load a cargo of oil in early August from the Akpo terminal in Nigeria. Whilst waiting for the necessary clearance papers after having tendered notice of readiness (being ready to receive cargo) in line with voyage orders received from charterers, the Nigerian navy approached the vessel under cover of darkness in a way that caused serious concerns and it was believed to be an attempted piracy attack. The vessel following ‘Best Management Practice’ escaped from the area and out into international waters. The company added that the tanker was interdicted in International waters by the Navy of Equatorial Guinea, for allegedly not displaying the flag of that country. "A fine was paid at the end of September against a promise of release of the vessel and its crew. However, both the ship and crew remain in captivity" OSM said. OSM Group CEO, Finn Amund Norbye said, “The vessel and its 26 multinational crew members have now been detained in Equatorial Guinea for more than 80 days. The seafarers have been treated as criminals, without any formal charges or legal process for close to 3 months, it is nothing short of a shocking maritime injustice.” MT Heroic Idun is manned by a 26-member crew, which comprises 16 Indians, eight Sri Lankans, one Filipino and a Polish national. The families of the Indian sailors were hopeful that the crew would be released and could return home from Equatorial Guinea. However, the vessel being taken back to Nigeria increases the families' agonising wait. It is feared that the crew might have to face trial in the West African country, which could pose further challenges to their return home. Some crew members are said to have possessed their mobile phones till the bygone weekend and it is believed that those devices have now been confiscated by Nigerian authorities. Burning, drifting, and being devoured by insects, Canada’s Boreal forest is shrinking and climate change is to blame.

Second&nbsp;only to the South American Amazon forest, the Boreal forest is vital to ensuring the future of planet Earth, reports AFP.&nbsp;The forest which encircles the arctic and stretches across Canada, Scandinavia, Russia and Alaska has in recent times been weakened by forest fires, the melting of permafrost, an insect infestation, warming temperatures and drifting trees.

As per AFP experts have categorically warned that “the forest is encroaching on the tundra, and the prairies are slowly taking the place of the trees.”

With the rising temperatures “drunken trees” have become a common phenomenon; trees are tilted sideways due to the melting permafrost. Eventually, the soil will completely erode and the fauna will tumble down.

Edmonton-based researcher for the natural resources ministry warns "You have the potential for large shifts," adding that some areas might be flooded and even lose forests, which can eventually turn into bogs or swamps, and lakes.

With it, bacteria are eating away at the biomass collected over thousands of years, generating carbon, and methane emissions which are then contributing to the acceleration of global warming.

The higher temperatures have also brought on another problem: insect infestations, which are quickly eating away at the trees.

Fauna, already weakened by the droughts brought on by heatwaves struggle to fend off bugs that exploit the longer summers and warmer winters.

Scientists as per AFP say that for now there’s still hope for the ecosystem's continued resilience, even as they ponder whether the forest’s “tipping point”, a threshold after which emissions will be inevitable and changes to the ecosystem irreversible is approaching.

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday presented the budget in the parliament as the minister of finance after a whirlwind year that saw the country face its worst-ever economic crisis. Sounding optimistic, Wickremesinghe said the Sri Lankan economy can script a turnaround by the end of 2023. The president said economic difficulties had eased in the last few months and that talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were ongoing to achieve economic stability. However, he asserted that economic reforms will not be limited to the IMF agreement. Notably, in September, IMF announced a $2.9 billion bailout package for the island nation after prolonged talks between an IMF team and the Sri Lankan government headed by Wickremesinghe and treasury secretary Mahinda Siriwardana. Through the budget, the government is looking to ensure that the bailout money is quickly dispatched to usher in the reforms. Read more: Sri Lanka and IMF reach staff-level agreement for $2.9 billion bailout loan During the speech, Wickremesinghe attempted to correct the mistakes of his predecessors who tried to close the Sri Lankan market. “I would like to define the new economy that we are going to build as a social market economy or an “open economic system of social Protection”. In this new economy, we focus on the following three main things, an export-oriented competitive economy, an environmentally friendly green and blue economy, and a digital economy.” said Wickremesinghe. WATCH | Sri Lanka economic crisis explained in one minute × The Sri Lankan government expects to achieve high economic growth of 7-8 per cent in the coming year, based on reforms and modernisation. It wants Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of more than $3 billion in the next decade. A presidential committee will also be set up to explore state-sector reforms. Additionally, a proposal has been put forth for the appointment of a revenue authority. Wickremesinghe also appealed to the youth of the country and asked them to take a new approach to build the economy. “To ensure a better future for the youth of our country, let’s create a new economy tailored to meet the expectations of the youth through a new approach that goes beyond traditional protests, struggles, and strikes.” (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

On Saturday (October 12), Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held talks with China's premier Li Keqiang, in the first in-person meeting of the two countries' leaders since 2019, and spoke about the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

The last meeting was held between former prime minister Scott Morrison and Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2019.&nbsp;

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated Sunday in Mexico City to denounce a proposed reform which they insist will undermine the independent body which organizes the country's elections.

Protesters chanted "Hands off INE," or National Electoral Institute, as they made their way along Paseo de Reforma in the city center to oppose the change championed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

"We are gathered here with one clear and important goal: to defend the electoral system that several generations of Mexicans built," former INE chairman Jose Woldenberg told the crowd in a speech at the close of the procession.

Lopez Obrador alleges that the INE endorsed fraud when he ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 2006 and 2012, before winning in 2018.&nbsp;

Under his proposal, the INE would be replaced by a new body with members chosen by voters instead of lawmakers and with a smaller budget. Political parties would also receive less money from the government for campaigning.

Lopez Obrador's critics say he is damaging democratic checks and balances with his attacks on the INE and other institutions.

His proposals, which involve amending the constitution, require support from at least two-thirds of lower house lawmakers.

Many of the demonstrators wore pink -- the color associated with the INE.

Graciela Aberel, a 53-year-old English teacher, said the proposed change amounts to letting the government organize elections, as was the case before INE was created in 1990.

"What he wants is for all the elections to depend on the government, so as to manipulate them at his whim and be able to stay in power," said Aberel.

The next presidential election is scheduled for 2024, when Lopez Obrador's six-year term ends. Presidents here can only serve one term. &nbsp;

Some in the crowd carried banners that read, "I am not corrupt, class-conscious, racist or hypocritical." This alluded to adjectives the president used last week to describe those who planned to take part in Sunday's rally.

High profile people from the world of politics also took part in the rally, such as former president Vicente Fox and the speaker of the chamber of deputies, Santiago Creel. Both are members of the opposition conservative PAN party.

The rally, which came on the president's 69th birthday, was so big that many people did not fit into the area where the closing speech was delivered.

Francisco Videla, a 50 year old merchant, said the protest was not just against the current government.

"It is against any government that, now or in the future, wants to take control of elections," said Videla.

The president's proposal would also reduce the number of seats in the lower house of congress from 500 to 300, and those in the Senate from 128 to 96.

Ever since cryptocurrency exchange FTX declared bankruptcy and its cryptocurrency genius and founder Sam Bankman-Fried resigned, the entire sector has been in turmoil. Now, FTX's rival exchange Binance's Chief Executive Changpeng Zhao has called for regulations in the industry. "We're in a new industry, we've seen in the past week, things go crazy in the industry. We do need some regulations, we do need to do this properly, we do need to do this in a stable way," said Zhao while speaking at the G20 leaders' summit in Bali. "I think the industry collectively has a role to protect consumers, to protect everybody. So it's not just regulators. Regulators have a role but it's not 100% their responsibility," he added.
