The Biden administration on Friday started the implementation of a significant policy shift at the US-Mexico border. Starting May 13, Title 42, a COVID-era order that had allowed the swift expulsion of many migrants expired, and new asylum restrictions took effect.

As per Reuters, adding to the confusion and uncertainty, were several last-minute actions. These legal challenges have added to the questions about how Biden's new strategy will play out.

The end of Title 42, a three-year-old order that allowed American authorities to expel migrants to Mexico or other countries quickly without a chance to request asylum, has raised concerns that US border facilities could be strained to the breaking point.

Officials are reportedly keeping a close eye on the movement of migrants.

US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official Blas Nunez-Neto told reporters on Friday that they "continue to encounter high levels of non-citizens at the border, but we did not see a substantial increase overnight or an influx at midnight (when Title 42 expired)."

New asylum restrictions put in place by President Joe Biden's administration to curb illegal crossings were met with criticism from immigration advocates.

Advocates represented by the American Civil Liberties Union filed a legal challenge against the new asylum bars, claiming they violate US and international laws.

They argue that Biden's new legislation resembles the restrictions imposed by his predecessor Donald Trump — these were blocked in the court.

However, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas defended the Biden regulation. Talking to MSNBC, he said it aims to encourage migrants to enter using legal pathways.

"It's going to be a tough transition," he added.

Along with immigration advocates, a few Democrat legislators also say that Biden's new regulation is too harsh and that it counters previous statements the US President made in 2020 on the campaign trail when he said he thought it was "wrong" for people not to be able to seek asylum on American soil

Biden's new measures, as per ABC News, have stopped short of imposing a total ban and instead, put in place severe limitations for those seeking to cross illegally without first opting for legal routes.

Toyota Motor Corp on Friday admitted that the vehicle data of 2.15 million customers in Japan, including those of its luxury brand Lexus, had been publicly available for almost a decade due to a 'human error'. The incident, which affected nearly the entire customer base who signed up for Toyota’s main cloud service platforms since 2012, was caused by a cloud system being set to public instead of private.

It also affected customers who signed up for the T-Connect — a service that provides a wide range of services including AI voice-enabled driving assistance, auto connection to call centres for vehicle management, and emergency support in such cases as a traffic accident or sudden illness — and Lexus vehicle's G-Link services were affected.

As per the company, while there have been no reports of malicious use, details such as vehicle locations and identification numbers of vehicle devices could have been compromised.

This incident, as per Reuters, comes to light as Toyota is making a push into vehicle connectivity and cloud-based data management to offer autonomous driving and other artificial intelligence-backed features.

Responding to a question regarding why it took Toyota so long to realise the mistake, a spokesperson for the company said, "There was a lack of active detection mechanisms, and activities to detect the presence or absence of things that became public."

The issue, as per Reuters, began in November 2013 and lasted until mid-April of this year.

The Personal Information Protection Commission in Japan has been notified of the incident, but the body has declined to disclose details in accordance with their practice. Toyota has taken measures to prevent unauthorised outside access to the data and is conducting an investigation of all cloud environments managed by Toyota Connected Corp.

Toyota’s announcement follows several other major data breaches in Japan, including one in March when mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo said the data of up to 5.29 million customers may have leaked via a company to which it had outsourced work.

The incident adds to a series of challenges Koji Sato, who took over as Toyota CEO on April 1 from Akio Toyoda, faces.

Pakistan's former Prime Minister and PTI Chief Imran Khan, who spent 48 hours in the custody of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after a dramatic arrest on Tuesday, got a relief from the Supreme Court on Thursday. The Kremlin has denied allegations that it was meddling in Turkey's upcoming presidential election campaign. Recently Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu accused Moscow of spreading "deep fakes" targeting him.

Earlier this week, opposition politician Kilicdaroglu claimed that ahead of the crucial Sunday elections, Russia was targeting him with an online smear campaign.

Replying to the allegations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "We strongly reject such statements".

"We officially declare: there can be no talk of any interference."

"If someone provided Mr. Kilicdaroglu with such information, they are liars," he added, as reported by the AFP.

Taking to Twitter, Kilicdaroglu addressed "Russian friends" and said, "You are behind the montages, conspiracies, deep fakes and tapes that were exposed in this country yesterday." He did not provide any details.

As per the news agency AFP, recent polls show the secular opposition leader edging ahead of Erdogan in Sunday's presidential ballot. They reportedly show challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu possessing a slight advantage and close to breaking the 50-per cent threshold needed to avoid a runoff on May 28.

However, as per Kremlin spokesman Peskov, Russia is doing nothing of that sort, and that Moscow "highly values" its bilateral relations with Turkey.

"Turkey has a very responsible, sovereign and thought-through position on a whole range of regional and global problems that we face," he said.

In recent months, even as Russia faces criticism from various nations, Moscow and Ankara have maintained close ties. Erdogan has also, at times, played the role of a mediator, talking to both Russia and Ukraine.

In recent days, disinformation has added a dark note to the pivotal elections that on Sunday will decide if Erdogan — who has been Turkey's President since 2014 — will remain in power.

Recently, at a huge rally, Recep Tayyip Erdogan played a 14-second clip which allegedly was proof that his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu has formed a union with "terrorists" and outlawed Kurdish militants. Russia ‘strongly’ denies accusations of spreading deep fakes, meddling in Turkey elections

Turkey is preparing for its general election, which might determine the political future of Erdogan, the country's de facto leader. As the election draws closer to the main event, Erdogan will face the greatest challenge of his 20-year reign because of a candidate who says his party has proof of Russian election meddling.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has labelled the "relief" provided to his predecessor Imran Khan by the courts as "double standards" in corruption cases and termed him a 'laadla' of courts. Responding to the Supreme Court's granting of relief to its "laadla" Imran Khan, Sharif said the "double standards have led to the death of justice in Pakistan".

Pakistan's Supreme Court granted a major relief for Khan on Thursday when it declared his dramatic arrest "unlawful" and "invalid" and ordered his immediate release after he was produced before a bench on its orders.

Sharif said that the apex court's relief was nothing but an NRO. He was referring to the infamous National Reconciliation Ordinance, which was used by past leaders to pardon their allies, before being outlawed by the top court itself.

Addressing Pakistan's federal cabinet, Sharif referred to the arrests of PML-N [Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz)] supremo Nawaz Sharif and other members of the federal coalition and asked why such leniency was not given to them.

"Let this be free for all," he said, adding that everyone will bear the consequences of whatever followed next.

Talking about the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party workers' protests, he said they have disrespected the martyrs of Pakistan in a way that has never been done by "our enemies".

Lamenting the protests after Imran Khan's May 9 arrest, he said such scenes have not been witnessed in Pakistan since the fall of Dhaka in 1973.

"The attacks on army installations, there can be no greater terrorism in the country," he said. "And seeing all this, a country, I don’t want to take its name, was celebrating that what couldn’t happen in 75 years is now happening in Pakistan."

He said that even after the death of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the nation had erupted into protests but no one "moved towards military installations".

Jose Mourinho is on track to guide AS Roma to back-to-back European titles after the Italian club defeated Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals. The Portuguese though may not remain at the helm of the Italian club after this season after being linked with French giants Paris Saint-Germain. Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was granted two-week bail by the Islamabad High Court a few days after his detention on corruption-related accusations by an anti-graft organisation. Imran Khan's immediate release was ordered by the Supreme Court on Thursday, which deemed his arrest to be "unlawful" and "illegal." Khan's arrest sparked widespread protests across Pakistan, and as his fans went on the rampage and looted and destroyed government facilities, the police tightened their prohibitory orders. Following nearly 2,000 arrests and at least eight fatalities, the administration enlisted the army to assist in bringing the situation back under control.

The Islamabad High Court on Friday issued a stay order on indictment of former Pak PM and PTI Chief Imran Khan in Toshakhana corruption case. This comes a day after Pakistan's Supreme Court termed Khan's arrest as illegal and ordered his immediate release. Khan was indicted on Wednesday, a day after he was arrested in Al-Qadir Trust case.

After 3 years, US has lifted Covid-19 restrictions, known as Title 42. The curbs allowed border agents to quickly expel many migrants caught crossing the border back to Mexico. Immigration processing has reverted to a pre-existing system, known as Title 8, but with new, much more stringent rules. Now, anyone who illegally enters US can be expelled, facing a lengthy ban on coming back; and possible criminal charges. At the frontier, some made last-minute attempts to beat the deadline, fording the Rio Grande river, hoping they might be released after turning themselves into border patrol.
