According to CBS News, the vehicle was reportedly a truck that sped into a crowd, crashing at high speed. Following the crash, the driver got off the vehicle and began shooting, during which two officers got shot, CBS News reported, citing witnesses.&nbsp;
"This man, this perpetrator, he fired on our officers from his vehicle when he crashed his vehicle. Two of our officers have been shot. They are stable," Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick told a news conference.

A passerby on I-10 eastbound near mile marker 10 in Vinton, Louisiana, called the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deputies on Tuesday (July 9) at 9:00 am&nbsp;(local time) amid the search for the one-year-old, according to a press release shared by the sheriff's office&nbsp;on Facebook.

According to the press release, police had been searching for the one-year-old since his four-year-old brother's body was discovered in the water near the Vinton Welcome Center on Monday (July 8).

The child and his mother, Aaliyah N Jack, 25, of Lake Charles, were last seen on Saturday (July 6).

Jack was located in Mississippi, without the one-year-old, by the Meridian Police Department and taken into custody, according to police. Judge Tony Fazzio imposed a $300,000 bond, charging her with failure to report a missing child.

"We looked at this 1-year-old as our miracle baby because he was still alive... unbelievable," Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Gary "Stitch" Guillory said at a news conference on July 9, according to a video released by the Associated Press.

“This is a tragic incident our detectives are currently investigating. Fortunately, we were able to locate the 1-year-old, who was taken to a local hospital to be checked out. He is now safe and in the care of authorities. We understand the community’s concern and are committed to ensuring justice for the children involved," Guillory said.

"CPSO detectives are actively working to gather all the information and details surrounding this case and the death of the 4-year-old. We will dedicate all necessary resources to ensure a thorough investigation. Our hearts go out to the family members of these two children,” he added.

"Detectives are continuing the investigation, and more charges are possible. The coroner will determine the cause of death," the release read.

NFL: Another big blow to New Orleans Saints with knee injury to Kendre Miller

Five people, including a girl, were shot during the Krewe of Bacchus parade in New Orleans, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) said. The incident occurred Sunday night. According to reports, one of the victims is fatally injured.

The victims include a woman and three men. All of them have been admitted to a hospital, while the condition of one of the victims is serious, NOPD Chief Deputy Hans Ganthier said but he did not specify which victim.

One person has been detained at the scene in connection with the shooting, the police said.

Two guns were recovered, police said, adding that they aren’t certain whether anyone else was involved in the shooting.

A tornado moved into southern US state Louisiana and struck parts of the state’s biggest city New Orleans and its suburbs. Residents were seen combing through the rubble of their homes. Homes were damaged in a dozen Mississippi counties.

In many ways, Iley Joseph’s one-bedroom apartment was an ideal place to ride out a hurricane. It was on the third floor — much too high to flood — of a building that was sturdy and new, part of a sleek, gated community for older residents like him.

But in the days after Hurricane Ida, his home began to feel like a trap. The power failure that cut off electricity to New Orleans rendered Joseph’s air-conditioner useless and his refrigerator nothing more than a cupboard. Even worse, the outage froze the complex’s elevators in place, sealing him inside the building because his health problems prevented him from using the stairs.

Joseph, 73, insisted in telephone conversations with his sons that he was doing just fine. But in his apartment, No. 312, it kept getting hotter. On Sept. 2, the fourth day after the storm hit — the hottest yet — a friend found him lying still on the side of his bed.

“I call his name, he doesn’t respond,” said the friend, Jared Righteous. “I realized he was gone.”

Only in recent days, as the last lights flickered back on in New Orleans, have officials here discovered the true toll of Hurricane Ida. Unlike in the Northeast, where many who perished were taken by floodwaters and tornadoes, heat has emerged as the greatest killer in New Orleans.

Of 14 deaths caused by the storm in the city, Joseph’s and nine others are believed to be tied to the heat. Experts say there are probably more. And friends of those who died have begun to ask whether the government or apartment landlords could have done more to protect older residents before they died, often alone, in stiflingly hot homes.

“Heat is a hazard that we simply haven’t given sufficient attention to,” said David Hondula, a professor at Arizona State University who studies the effects of sweltering temperatures. “All cities are in the early stages of understanding what an effective heat response looks like.”

In New Orleans, officials set up air-conditioned cooling centers across the city and distributed food, water and ice around town. But for residents like Joseph who could not leave their buildings, the aid might as well have been worlds away.

All 10 people whose deaths have been tied to the heat were in their 60s and 70s, and they died over four broiling days, the last of which was Sept. 5, a full week after the storm.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said his state had deployed more than 1,600 personnel for search and rescue operations, while the Pentagon said over 5,200 personnel from the military, federal emergency management, and National Guard had been activated across several southern states.

State governor John Bel Edwards asked people to remain in their houses until the storm passes warning that "coming days and weeks are going to be extremely difficult".

The weather department said rainfall of up to 25 to 46 centimetres is expected in southern Louisiana which has been hit hard by the storm.

Grand Isle, a town located in New Orleans was flooded as over 700,000 homes were cut off from electricity by Sunday evening as the storm hit.

Several people had evacuated to safer areas in New Orleans ahead of the storm with traffic congesting reported on the highways even as some left just before Ida made landfall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that diabetes and heart disease increase the risk of coronavirus infections and New Orleans ranks high in both these conditions, more than the national average.&nbsp;

Doctors, experts and other officials also say the New Orleans' high levels of obesity and related diseases may make patients more vulnerable to the coronavirus.&nbsp;

"Obesity helps cause diabetes, which helps cause kidney issues, and we know that coronavirus attacks kidneys. And obesity is also linked to heart disease, heart disease is also linked to poverty," said Rebekah Gee, who until January was the Health Secretary for Louisiana and now is the head of Louisiana State University's healthcare services division.

About 97% of those who died of COVID-19 in Louisiana had a preexisting condition, as per the state's health department. Diabetes makes up for 40 per of the deaths, obesity 25 per cent, chronic kidney disease in 23% and cardiac problems 21 per cent.&nbsp;

A CDC report released for the first time this week show that 78% of coronavirus-affected patients in ICUs in the United States had an underlying health condition, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic lung disease.

However, the report included less than 6 per cent of the infections, still, Louisiana doctors said it was consistent with what they are observing and is in line with what Italy and China witnessed.&nbsp;

"I think it's a very good question whether or not just having that phenotype, those conditions, simply render you unable to control the viral replication and whether there's something in the immune response in those individuals that is either insufficient or even perhaps excessive, causing too much inflammation. We think that a lot of the organ dysfunction that we see in this COVID syndrome is the result of excessive systemic inflammation. We know that folks that are obese a lot of times have markers in their blood and a lot of times systemic inflammation," LSU Health New Orleans critical care doctor Kyle Happel said.

Official data shows that New Orleans ranks among worst in the US when it comes to diabetes, obesity and blood pressure with nearly 39 per cent with high blood pressure, 36% obesity and about 15% diabetes.

These rates are very high than the national median which is 32 per cent with high blood pressure, 31 per cent obesity and 11 per cent with diabetes.
