A 27-year-old Dutch historian discovered a stash of 1,000-year-old antiquities, including four golden ear pendants, two strips of gold lead and 39 silver coins, the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities announced on Thursday.

Lorenzo Ruijter, 27, told Reuters he has been treasure hunting since he was 10. Ruijter reportedly discovered the treasure in 2021 in the small northern city of Hoogwoud, about 60 km north of the Dutch capital Amsterdam. He discovered it using a metal detector.

"It was very special discovering something this valuable, I can't really describe it. I never expected to discover anything like this,"&nbsp;Ruijter said, adding that it was hard to keep it a secret for two years.

The oldest coin from Ruijter's stash is at least eight centuries old, the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities found, adding that it managed to trace it back to around 1250.

By that time the jewellery was already two centuries old, the museum said, adding it must already have been "an expensive and cherished possession".

"Golden jewellery from the High Middle Ages is extremely rare in the Netherlands," the museum also said.

While it will remain a mystery why exactly the treasure was buried, the museum pointed out there was a war raging between Dutch regions West Friesland and Holland in the middle of the 13th century, with Hoogwoud being the epicentre.

Lorenzo said it is possible someone powerful at the time buried the valuable objects as a way to protect them and hopefully dig them up once it was safe again.

Given its archaeological significance, the treasure was given as a loan to the museum which will display it, but it will remain the official property of finder Lorenzo Ruijter.

Japan&nbsp;would impose similar restrictions on Nikon Corp, the report said.

Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara, a government spokesperson, said&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;would make "appropriate steps" based on the United States' and other nations' regulatory moves. He declined to comment further when asked about the report at a Friday afternoon media briefing.

The Dutch foreign ministry declined comment. Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who has said he expects to reach agreement with the United States and other allies on stricter controls but that the Netherlands will not simply adopt U.S. rules, will take questions at his weekly news briefing later on Friday.

Sources have told Reuters that a deal between Dutch and U.S. officials could be clinched by the end of the month as representatives from the two countries meet in Washington on Friday.

While Nikon could be affected, the&nbsp;Japanese company most likely to be affected by new restrictions will be chip manufacturing machinery maker Tokyo Electron, which relies on China for about a quarter of its sales, said Masahiko Hosokawa, a Meisei University professor and former director general of trade control at the ministry.

"A balance needs to be struck so no one among&nbsp;Japan, the United States and Europe will be disproportionately disadvantaged. It's about fairness," he said.

Dutch officials have insisted that fresh controls address national security concerns rather than favour U.S. chip-related companies, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters.

Cyclers in Amsterdam will soon be able to access the newly-built underwater bicycle-parking complex, which will provide a big relief to the residents of the cycling-mad capital of the Netherlands. The complex is built beneath the Open Haven Front, an access tributary to the city's IJ River. The complex can take in 7,000 bicycles. Another such shelter will be opened for the public in February, which is being built next to the IJ itself. The IJ-side site will be able to accommodate 4,000 bicycles, taking the combined capacity to 11,000 bicycles.

The construction of the project started in 2019, and the engineers had to drain part of the Open Haven Front next to Amsterdam Central Station. Amsterdam municipality released a time-lapse video of the construction site which showed how the water was pumped out of the Open Haven Front to build the structure and was later reflooded.

The firm said in a statement, "The cyclist steps into an imaginary oyster with a rough exterior of basalt and natural stone and a smooth, light interior." Amsterdam’s alderwoman Melanie van der Horst expressed her pleasure over the development by saying that people will now be able to park their bicycles immediately after arriving at Amsterdam station.

Amsterdam is a city of bicycle-loving people, with almost 600,000 bicycle trips made daily. There are a total of 900,000 cyclists in the Dutch capital. Thus, finding a proper parking space is always a constant pain in the neck for the residents of the city.

Due to the danger of high seismic activity in the region, the production at the gas field has been cut short to just a fraction of its full capacity, said Vijlbrief in a conversation with Financial Times.&nbsp;

“We won’t open up more because of the safety issues,” he said adding, “It is politically totally unviable. But apart from that, I’m not going to do it because it means that you increase the chances of earthquakes, which I don’t want to be responsible for.”

In Netherlands’ northeast, the Groningen gas field is close to the German border and has felt about 100 tremors annually since the 1980s.

The gas excavation was increased during summers after Russian sanctions but due to the increased risk of earthquakes, the annual output has been reduced to 2.8 bcm. Vijlbrief said that it is potentially dangerous to take production beyond 5bcm.&nbsp;

“It’s very, very simple: everybody who has some knowledge of earthquake danger tells me that it’s really very dangerous to keep on producing there. I’m quite convinced it’s wise to close it down,” Vijlbrief said.

He also revealed that the previous government's approach to addressing the impending danger was lackadaisical and "it was crystal clear that the whole safety aspect of Groningen gas drilling was neglected for many years."&nbsp;

Opened in 1963, Groningen, pumped out over 50 bcm at its peak nearly a decade ago. Netherlands instructed gas operator NAM, a joint venture of Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil, to reduce production in 2013. In 2018, the Netherlands announced the field would close however the plan has since been delayed.&nbsp;

An old map has emerged, which is believed to indicate the way to the spot where treasure worth millions of euros was hidden by German soldiers during World War 2, following which several amateur treasure hunters have gathered, looking for the gold, in the Netherlands.&nbsp;The groups, carrying shovels and metal detectors, are seen wandering across the fields surrounding rural Ommeren, which lies in the country's east after the Dutch National Archive made the map public on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The archive stated that the map is believed to be indicating&nbsp;the way to the location where four large boxes filled with gold, silvers, rubies, diamonds and pieces of jewellery, looted by Nazi soldiers were hidden after an explosion.&nbsp;

A German soldier handed over the map soon after the Netherlands got freedom from Nazi occupation in 1945. This week, the research file containing the map was released as the maximum years of holding it confidential, which is 75 years, had lapsed.&nbsp;

National Archive spokeswoman Anne-Marieke Samson, while speaking to Reuters, said that they could never completely confirm the treasure's existence, however, various failed attempts were made by the institute to find it in 1947.&nbsp;

"We don't know for sure if the treasure existed. But the institute did a lot of checks and found the story reliable," said Samson said. "But they never found it and if it existed, the treasure might very well have been dug up already," she added.&nbsp;

However, the amateur gold diggers are not deterred by the small chance of discovering the treasure.

Jan Henzen, aged 57, said, "I see groups of people with metal detectors everywhere." &nbsp; 
 
"Like a lot of people, the news about the treasure made me go look for myself. The chance of the treasure still being here after 70 years is very small I think, but I want to give it a try," he added.&nbsp;

The United Kingdom's (UK) Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab and Netherlands' Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius will host an international meeting in March to scale up the support being offered to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its investigations of the alleged war crimes in Ukraine. According to a statement issued by the British government on Saturday (January 7), justice ministers from around the world will attend the meeting that will be held in the Lancaster House in London.&nbsp;

"The meeting comes as Russia steps up its campaign of terror against Ukraine, striking at crucial energy infrastructure and plunging people into the dark and freezing cold of winter. In reclaimed areas of Ukraine, prosecutors continue to gather evidence of atrocities and sexual violence," the statement said.&nbsp;

Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, who is also UK's Justice Secretary, said that Russian forces should know they cannot act with impunity "and we will back Ukraine until justice is served."

It added that the UK government continues to support Ukraine's domestic investigation and that around &nbsp;£400 million in economic and humanitarian grant support has been provided to the war-torn country.&nbsp;

"The UK has now provided £2.3 billion in military support to Ukraine in 2022 — more than any country other than the United States — and has already committed to sustain that level of military support into 2023," the statement also said.&nbsp;

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte issued an official apology on Monday for Netherlands' historical involvement in slavery for 250 years, as he said that it was a crime committed against humanity and acknowledged the continued consequences of slavery in the present day.

In his nationally broadcasted speech, Rutte said, “Today I apologise. For centuries the Dutch state and its representatives have enabled and stimulated slavery and have profited from it.”

"It is true that nobody alive today bears any personal guilt for slavery...(however) the Dutch state bears responsibility for the immense suffering that has been done to those that were enslaved and their descendants,” he added.

Rutte made the official apology amid growing reconsideration of the Netherlands’ colonial past, which includes steps taken to return the looted wealth and the current struggle of the country with racism.

The prime minister’s apology in The Hague faced resistance from groups who argued that King Willem-Alexander should have issued an apology on July 1, 2023, in former colony Suriname to mark Dutch abolition’s 160th anniversary. The momentum was with the Argentines and it was no surprise when they extended their lead in the 73rd minute after Denzel Dumphries tripped Marcos Acuna in the box and Messi made no mistake from the spot, burying the ball in the corner.

The Dutch, though, were not about to go out with a whimper -- pulling a goal back, seven minutes from the end, with an angled glancing header from Weghorst from a Berghuis cross from deep.

Ten minutes of added time raised Dutch hopes and - tempers with a couple of mass confrontations - and &nbsp;they moved Van Dijk up front and pumped balls int the box.

Deep into added time, one of those high balls, led to a free-kick just outside the area.

Koopmeiners feigned an expected shot before instead, to everyone's surprise, playing a short pass into Weghorst, who twisted past Enzo Fernandez and poked home the equaliser.

The wild celebrations over, the game went into extra-time and curiously became becalmed, only sparking back into life late in the second period.

Lautaro Martinez saw a powerful goalbound shot deflected off Van Djik and then another deflected effort, from Fernandez, flew just over the bar.

Lautaro then forced a diving save out of Noppert and Messi screwed a shot wide and only the post kept out a long-range drive from Fernandez.

After all that, it was penalties.

Van Dijk was up first and Martinez dived to his right to save. Messi followed and made no mistake before Martinez saved again from Berghuis.

This time there was no way back for the Dutch as, even despite a miss from Fernandez, Argentina held on to win the shoot-out and head into the semi-finals.

Roozer said that Dutch PM wanted to stick to December 19 because of the "changing political situation" due to Dutch far-right parties rising in polls and opposing the apology.

Rutte said the government wanted to "make a success" of the date and that it was part of a "process". Rutte also hit out at the "extremely unfortunate" leaking by Dutch media of the date.

The Netherlands has been slowly coming to grips with the legacy of its colonial history and its role in 250 years of slavery in Suriname, Brazil, the Caribbean, Asia and South Africa.

The city of Amsterdam has formally apologised for its role in the slave trade, while the city's Rijksmuseum last year held the first exhibition confronting the issue.

Slavery helped fund the Dutch "Golden Age" that built Amsterdam's famed canal houses and produced the art that now fills the Rijksmuseum and other galleries.
