A software company in the United States violated a Dutch worker's human rights by forcing the remote employee to keep his webcam on during work hours, a court in the Netherlands has ruled.

The Florida-based telemarketing company Chetu fired the employee who refused to be monitored "for nine hours per day", a programme that needed his webcam to be streamed and also sharing of the screens, reported TechCrunch.

Chetu said that the firing was done because of the "refusal to work" and "insubordination", but the worker said otherwise. He reportedly said the fact that he was being monitored all day made him uncomfortable, and he thought it was an invasion of privacy.

As quoted by the court documents, he said: "This is an invasion of my privacy and makes me feel really uncomfortable. That is the reason why my camera is not on." The report also stated that Chetu did not go to the court hearing.

Researchers have discovered a new treatment for advanced melanoma during the Phase 3 clinical trial. They claim that it is far more effective than the existing leading therapy for metastatic melanoma.

The scientists at the Netherlands Cancer Institute said that the new treatment uses a patient’s own immune cells to fight cancer, and added that its therapy is similar to another type of treatment that has proven to be highly effective for blood cancers, called CAR-T therapy.

Under CAR-T therapy, patients’ T-cells are harvested and modified in the lab into cancer fighters. These modified cells are then infused back into the patient.

Similarly in the melanoma trial, the researchers used an approach called TIL therapy, which involves harvesting a patient’s immune cells—tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes, which are taken from the tumour.

But instead of modifying these tumour cells in the lab like the CAR-T therapy, they’re simply amplified to produce billions of immune cells.

Those amplified immune cells are then injected back into the patient’s blood, where they work to kill the cancer.

Dr John Haanen, a medical oncologist at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, who led the new clinical trial, told NBC News, “We expand them from a million cells to several billion cells.”

The results of the trial were presented at the ESMO Congress 2022 meeting in Paris on Saturday.

To base their hypothesis, the doctors conducted a random trail and assigned 168 patients with metastatic melanoma to receive either TIL treatment or the current standard treatment—an immunotherapy drug called ipilimumab.

Ipilimumab treatment is used in people who don’t respond to a first-line treatment called anti-PD-1 therapy. Notably, all of the patients in the trial had not responded to that treatment.

After observing for three years, the scientists found that people on TIL therapy had a 50% reduction in disease progression and death compared to those who were treated with ipilimumab.

20 per cent of people on TIL therapy saw their tumours disappear completely, compared to 7 per cent in the ipilimumab group.

Though they are still being observed, the median survival time of cancer patients who received TIL therapy was found to be over two years, compared to just over 1.5 years on ipilimumab therapy, researchers found.

Haarlem, a beautiful Dutch city known for its outlying tulip fields, art museums and hofjes, will become the first in the world to ban meat adverts from public spaces to discourage consumption, Dutch News.nl reported.

Haarlem is pushing forward to reduce consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and it will prohibit the adverts from 2024 after the meat was added to a list of products deemed to contribute to the climate crisis. The ban was agreed upon last year and it was made official last week.

The report said that the advertisements will not be allowed on city buses, shelters and screens in public spaces.

Although, the move has led to complaints from the meat sector that the municipality is "going too far in telling people what's best for them".

The report mentioned that Amsterdam, Leiden and The Hague have already banned ads for flying, petrol-powered cars and the fossil fuel industry.

Haarlem GroenLinks councillor Ziggy Klazes, who tabled the motion, told the Dutch daily newspaper Trouw, "Meat is just as harmful to the environment. We can’t tell people there's a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause."

Despite party leader Wopke Hoekstra's recent support for protesting farmers, the motion was supported by the Christian Democrats (CDA), the report mentioned.

CDA councillor Ron Dreijer told the paper, "We are more sustainable than the national party."

In response to the move, the meat sector said it was unhappy with the ban. The spokesperson for industry body Centrale Organisatie voor de Vleessector, told the paper, "The authorities are going too far in telling people what's best for them."

Notably, the meat sector came up with 'Nederland Vleesland', a campaign to promote meat eating as "a matter of taste" as well as an economic benefit.

The death toll from an accident when a truck drove off a dike and slammed into a community barbecue in a village south of Rotterdam rose to six Sunday and police said a further seven people are in hospital, including one in critical condition.

According to Police, three men and three women were killed, ranging in age from 28 to 75. Police spokeswoman Mirjam Boers said the truck driver, a 46-year-old Spanish man, is suspected of causing the accident that happened early Saturday evening in the village of Nieuw-Beijerland. His identity was not released, in line with Dutch privacy laws.

The large truck the man was driving left a small rural road and careered down the bank of the dike and ploughed into the village gathering. Boers said the driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

“We are investigating what could have happened,” Boers said.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima said in a tweet that they were shocked by the accident that they said caused “an unimaginable sadness in this close-knit community. A more contagious subvariant of COVID-19’s Omicron, BA.2.75 variant —nicknamed “Centaurus”—has now emerged in The Netherlands, alarming experts who are concerned over the strain’s rapid spread.

According to reports, the variant was found in a sample from the Northeast Gelderland region. The sample was collected on June 26.

It 'has also now been identified in the Netherlands,' the Dutch National Institute of Public Health said in a statement on Wednesday, according to AFP.

The Centaurus subvariant first emerged in India in May and has since been detected in 14 other countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, according to WHO Covid-19 Technical Lead, Maria Van Kerkhove.

Though little is known about the new subvariant, there have been concerns about the contagious nature of the virus.

Last week, the World Health Organisation's chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said that they are closely monitoring the situation, but there were "limited sequences to analyse".

"This sub-variant seems to have a few mutations on the receptor binding domain of the spike protein... so we have to watch that," she said in a tweeted video.

She further said that was "too early to know" how well the strain can evade immunity or how severe it was.

In an interview to AFP, Antoine Flahault, director of the Institute of Global Health at the University of Geneva said that BA.2.75 might be more contagious than BA.5 Omicron subvariant since it is driving up cases in India.

"It seems to be becoming the dominant strain in India - the question is will it become the dominant strain all over the world?"

"It seems to be becoming the dominant strain in India - the question is will it become the dominant strain all over the world?" (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Danielle van de Donk`s superb goal gave the Netherlands an important 3-2 win over Portugal in their Group C match at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday, helping the defending champions move to the top of the group table. Damaris Egurrola gave the Dutch, a team hit by injury and illness, a seventh-minute lead with a fine header from a corner. Nine minutes later, Stefanie van der Gragt doubled the lead with another goal. But Portugal refused to give up and showed some remarkable resistance. Carole Costa scored a goal via the penalty in the 38th minute of the game to make it 2-1.

At half-time, Portugal was trailing by a goal in the game. Two minutes after the break, Diana Silva made things even for Portugal, heading home a fine cross from Costa. The Dutch could have got the lead thanks to Jill Roord but her effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. In the 62nd minute, Van De Donk netted the decider, collecting the ball on box`s edge and curling it into the far corner to make it 3-2 in favour of Netherlands.

Netherlands are currently having four points in two games, equal with Sweden. Sweden gained their first win against Switzerland by 2-1. Netherlands will play Switzerland in their final game while Portugal will face off against Sweden. Both concluding games will take place on July 17. Teenage Everton midfielder Hanna Bennison`s decider goal in the second half helped Sweden clinch their first win of the competition against Switzerland at Bramall Lane. Sweden started off the game well but had a scare in the ninth minute after their opponent was awarded a penalty due to a foul, but after looking at the pitchside monitor, the referee overturned her decision.

Fridolina Rolfo was troubling the Swiss with her gameplay. The first half was goalless. She continued playing well after the break, with her effort missing the top corner. But in the 53rd minute of the match, she netted the first goal for her side, tucking the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal. Ramona Bachmann hit with an equaliser just two minutes later, hitting a curling shot into the top corner.

Switzerland tried to make most of their chances for the next few minutes but Bennison`s strike in 79th-minute was the final goal of the game, making it 2-1 in favour of Sweden. Sweden could have added a third in the 87th minute but the goal by Rebecka Blomqvist was chalked off for offside. Nonetheless, Sweden had finished on the winning side.

To make work-from-home (WFH) a legal right, two lawmakers of the Netherlands have proposed a legislation. If this law gets passed, the country will become one of the first in the world to have such legislation. This rule will allow remote working flexibility for several industries. Steven van Weyenberg, member, pro-European D-66 Party and Senna Maatoug, lawmaker, Green Party will introduce this legislation in parliament, Weyenberg told Bloomberg on Wednesday. The two leaders will submit the proposal before the house goes for summer recess on July 3.

“We have the green light for this new law, thanks to the support we received from both employees and employers’ unions. We are very hopeful it will pass before the summer,” said Weyenberg.

With the championship title at stake, Netherlands pulled off a narrow 2-1 win against a fighting Indian men`s team here in the FIH Hockey Men`s Pro League encounter on Sunday. This win saw the hosts claim the FIH Hockey Pro League title while India ended their campaign with a third-place finish. Abhishek (1`) was the lone goal scorer for India while Jip Janssen (7`) and Jorrit Croon (45`) scored for the hosts. India had gotten off to a rollicking start with a goal in the opening minute of the match through Abhishek who made a brave foray into the striking circle and took a valiant shot on goal. Although the early 1-0 lead by India put the Dutch side on the back foot, they did not do anything out of the order under pressure but instead built on their attack which helped them win PCs. Jip Janssen taking the penalty corner was on target with a fiercely struck drag-flick that went past India`s experienced goalkeeper PR Sreejesh at a blistering pace.

Only a minute into the second quarter India created a brilliant opportunity when Harmanpreet Singh made a long pass to forward Gujrant Singh who took a fine shot on goal. But a stick tackle by Dutch defender saw India being awarded a penalty stroke. However, the chance was lost with Pirmin Blaak displaying impeccable skills to stop Harmanpreet`s flick aimed at the top right pocket. Only minutes later, Dutch launched a fine attack that saw them create a PC but an alert Sreejesh continued to impress with excellent saves. With scores tied at 1-1 when the teams went into the half-time break, it was an even battle in the following two quarters where both teams worked their strategies to create scoring opportunities. Though in the first half, the Dutch dominated with ball possession and circle entries, India upped the pressure in the third and fourth quarter with an improvised ball possession and circle penetration, creating a number of opportunities through PCs as well as field-goal chances. However, they couldn`t get clear shots that could beat the Dutch defence.

Meanwhile, the hosts did not fumble in their attack as they converted from a PC in the 45th minute. A well-worked set-piece saw Jip flick the ball to the left flak which was perfectly deflected by Croon fetching that much-needed 2-1 lead.

Backed by the home support, Netherlands defended the score till the final hooter, thus clinching the championship with two more matches to be played against Spain. India, on the other hand, ended their campaign with 30 points on the table and Belgium have ended their campaign finishing second on the pool table.

Eoin Morgan-led England have etched their name in history books by registering the highest ODI total on Friday (June 17), at VRA Cricket Ground, Amstelveen. Being asked to bat first on a batting-friendly track, England big-hitters made the most of the Netherlands' inexperienced bowling line-up as the current ODI champions have broken their own record and put on a mammoth total of 498/4 in 50 overs.

Thus, the world champions fell agonisingly short of the 500-run mark by just two runs. The foundation was laid for a big score, despite Jason Roy felling for 1, with an unbelievable 222-run second-wicket stand between centurions Phillip Salt (125) and Dawid Malan (122). The former struck at 131.18, with 14 fours and three sixes, whereas the left-hander Malan returned with a strike rate of 114.68. What followed was more mayhem for the hosts as in-form Jos Buttler and big-hitter Liam Livingstone -- both coming from a splendid IPL 2022 season -- smacked the bowlers to all parts of the ground.

With as many as 26 sixes overall, England also created a record for hitting most maximums in an ODI innings. Interestingly, the next two slots also belong to Morgan-led Three Lions.

Buttler ended with a mouth-watering 162 not out, with seven fours and 14 sixes at a strike rate of 231.43, whereas Livingstone was unbeaten on 66 off just 22 deliveries, striking at 300 with six fours and an equal number of maximums. This also became the third-such instance where a team saw three batters reaching the triple-figure mark in an ODI inning.

En route to the highest ODI score of 498, England leapfrogged the record of the highest total of 481 in 50-over cricket. In 2018, Morgan & Co. had gone berserk by scoring 481/6 in an ODI versus Tim Paine's Australia, at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. This time around, they have gone past their own total and are very much in line to touch the magical 500-run mark in the format.

But it was not to be as the Netherlands scored three field goals through Tessa Beetsma (12th minute), Luna Fokke (53rd) and Jip Dicke (54th) to emerge winners and sail into the their fourth consecutive final.

The Netherlands scored against the run of play in the 12th minute through a fantastic field effort from Beetsma, in what has been described as the best goal of the tournament as it involved as many as 20 passes.

A minute later, the Netherlands literally took the game away from the Indians with another field strike through Dicke, who deflected home a Beetsma reverse hit.

From there on, it was next to impossible for the Indians as the Dutch continued to dominate to take the game away and seal their place in the final.
