Euthanasia can still be a controversial, if no longer a taboo subject in many countries. In Netherlands, it has been legal since 2002 for clearly defined conditions. But 'duo euthanasia' has again come into renewed focus after former Dutch PM Dries van Agt (93) died by euthanasia, “hand in hand” with his wife Eugenie (93).

According to The Guardian, 26 people were granted euthanasia at the same time as their partners in 2020. In 2021, the number increased to 32 and in 2022 the number of couples who opted for duo euthanasia rose to 58.

Former Dutch PM Dries van Agt and his wife were married for 70 years.

Last week, The Rights Forum, a group Van Agt set up to support the Palestinian cause announced the couple's death. The group said that the couple died "together and hand in hand".

Both of them were reportedly very ill. Van Agt suffered brain hemorrhage in the year 2019. He never quite recovered.

“Interest in this is growing, but it is still rare,” said Elke Swart, spokesperson for the Expertisecentrum Euthanasie which clears euthanasia wish of people in the Netherlands. About 1000 people are granted euthanasia every year.

“It is pure chance that two people are suffering unbearably with no prospect of relief at the same time … and that they both wish for euthanasia,” she said, as quoted by The Guardian.

The six conditions in case of which euthanasia is granted in the Netherlands include unbearable suffering with no prospect of relief and also an independent, long held wish for death.

Couples choosing the duo euthansia need to go through strict tests individually as they are not considered together while granting of euthanasia.

Duo euthanasia still represents small percentage. In the year 2022, it was 5.1 per cent of deaths in the country but many people reportedly express the wish.

A painting by Vincent van Gogh, which was stolen and then handed to a Dutch art sleuth in an IKEA bag last year, was displayed in a museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands on Wednesday (Feb 7). The 1884 ‘Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring’ which is worth approximately $6.8 million was unveiled for the first time after being retrieved by the Dutch police in 2023, three years after it was stolen.

The ‘Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring’ was presented to the media on Wednesday at the Groningen Museum. However, the public will not be able to view the painting until 29 March.

The damage from the theft was still visible, reported AFP, describing it as a deep white scratch at the bottom of the canvas.

“I would call this a severe one because it goes through all the layers, the varnish, the paint layers and then into the ground layer, which is white,” the painting’s restorer, Marjan de Visser, told the news agency.

She also said that there was a “little bit” of damage under the original canvas and that a thorough investigation into the painting is being conducted. Speaking about the investigation, De Visser said she is looking into the materials used, previous restorations, and how it was mounted.

The painting was retrieved last year by the Dutch police thanks to a tip from an “art detective” named Arthur Brand after being stolen in a daring midnight heist in March 2020 amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

Brand played a pivotal role in the recovery of the 139-year-old painting, orchestrating its return in an unexpected and remarkable fashion.

The painting was stolen from the Singer Laren Museum near Amsterdam when it was on loan from Groningen and its whereabouts were unknown for three and a half years before sensationally resurfacing in the possession of the Dutch art sleuth.

Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders's hopes of forming a majority government were in tatters on Tuesday (Feb 6) as a key negotiating party abruptly withdrew over a row about public finances.

Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders's hopes of forming a majority government were in tatters on Tuesday (Feb 6) as a key negotiating party abruptly withdrew over a row about public finances. The New Social Contract (NSC) of anti-corruption champion Pieter Omtzigt announced it was "finished" with this round of coalition talks, making it impossible as it stands for Wilders to hold a majority. The NSC said it would remain "constructive" in talks over forming a government but appeared to rule out serving in a majority cabinet with Wilders. "It could be a constructive support for a minority cabinet for example," said the NSC in a letter. Wilders stunned the Netherlands and Europe by storming to victory in November's election with an anti-Islam, climate-change-denying manifesto that would ban mosques and the Koran. But elections in the fragmented Dutch system usually usher in months of haggling over a coalition government. Wilders has opened talks with three other parties but without the NSC and its 20 seats in the 150-seat parliament, he has no chance of forming a majority cabinet. The far-right leader has already clashed with Omtzigt over parts of the Wilders manifesto seen as anti-constitutional, like its anti-Islam elements but also plans for a "Nexit", or a Dutch exit from the EU. "Incredibly disappointing," Wilders wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "The Netherlands wants this cabinet and now Pieter Omtzigt is throwing in the towel while we were still in talks until today. I don't get it at all," he added. Watch | Netherlands coalition drama: Far-right leader Geert Wilders suffers major blow | Race to Power 'A bit surprised' Ronald Plasterk, the official charged with overseeing the horse-trading, must report to parliament by next Monday (Feb 12) at the latest on progress in the talks. He said he was "a bit surprised" by the sudden move, according to local news agency ANP, adding that he had found out via his WhatsApp. His office had released an email to reporters saying that all four parties would be around the table again on Wednesday -- which is now unlikely to happen. Already the omens had not been positive heading into Monday's deadline for Plasterk to release his much-awaited report. Before Tuesday's shock announcement, the four party leaders had agreed to keep silent on the talks, meaning commentators and journalists had to rely on a stream of messages from Wilders on X. "We have a serious problem," he warned after one possible coalition partner voted through a controversial immigration measure in the upper house, posting "MY GOD" in capitals after the news broke. Also read | Explained | Why has Geert Wilders' victory in Dutch poll shocked Muslim citizens? He then lashed out at Dilan Yesilgoz, leader of the centre-right liberal VVD, calling her "sour" after she appeared to take aim at him in a speech to her party. The Netherlands reportedly needs to find some 17 billion euros in spending cuts but Wilders has instead vowed tax cuts and no major reductions in spending, infuriating the fiscally prudent Omtzigt. "Under no circumstances does the NSC want to make promises to Dutch people, which it knows in advance are empty promises that cannot be kept during the coming cabinet period," said the letter. Yesilgoz also voiced shock at the abrupt move, writing on X: "I am very surprised. We were having constructive talks, even today." "I hope that we can quickly come round the table and hear precisely what is going on." The final member of the negotiating foursome, Caroline van der Plas from the BBB farmers party, said it was "astonishing", also saying that talks had been positive until then. The Dutch are used to politicians taking their time to form a government. The last one took 271 days and Mark Rutte will remain prime minister until a deal is clinched. But Wilders also raised eyebrows by dangling the possibility of new elections if the talks founder. The latest polling suggests support for Wilders's PVV is soaring, with one showing a staggering 50 seats out of 150 for the far-right party.

An old video of Geert Wilders, the probable prime minister of The Netherlands notorious for his anti-Islam views, has gone viral on social media where he can be heard making another inflammatory remark against Muslims.

The video, believed to have been recorded in 2020, has been going viral on social media X as he looks to soften his image amidst expectations of him succeeding outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte after the recently-concluded elections which saw his Freedom Party (PVV) winning a majority of seats in the parliament.

Inflammatory remarks against Muslims

In the undated video, he purportedly said, “I have a message for all the Muslims in the Netherlands who do not respect our freedom, our democracy and our core values, who find the rules of the Quran more important than our secular laws—Get out," he purportedly said.

“Leave for an Islamic country. Then, you can enjoy Islamic rules. Those are their rules, but not ours," he added.

Despite winning a majority of seats in the Nov 22 elections, Freedom Party (PVV) is projected to hold only 24 per cent of seats in the Dutch parliament (that is 37 seats in the 150-member assembly), paving the way for coalition talks with other parties to form the government. The final results are expected to be declared next week.

However, due to Wilders’ extreme views, some parties have been hesitant to extend support.

Inflammatory remarks against Muslims In the undated video, he purportedly said, “I have a message for all the Muslims in the Netherlands who do not respect our freedom, our democracy and our core values, who find the rules of the Quran more important than our secular laws—Get out," he purportedly said. “Leave for an Islamic country. Then, you can enjoy Islamic rules. Those are their rules, but not ours," he added. Wild, wilder, Wilders: Rise of far-right in Europe underlines threat to liberalism

The Dutch general elections have been swept by Geert Wilders in a surprise victory. Following the win has unleashed protests in Amsterdam after the anti-Islam populist leaders win.

Protests spark in Netherlands after Wilders' election victory

The Dutch have cast their ballot and an exit poll predicts that a substantial majority has voted in favour of far-right populist leader Geert Wilders. But why are nations shocked at the Mandate and is this election outcome a sign of winds changing direction in Europe?

Netherlands: Dutch hard-liner Wilders will have to compromise before taking power

Geert Wilders of the populist Party for Freedom (PVV) stands on the precipice of becoming the Dutch prime minister. Wilders has been sweeping all exit polls and looks certain to take former PM Mark Rutte's position after the latter resigned in July earlier this year.

Geert Wilders of the populist Party for Freedom (PVV) stands on the precipice of becoming the Dutch prime minister. Wilders has been sweeping all exit polls and looks certain to take former PM Mark Rutte's position after the latter resigned in July earlier this year. Known for his anti-immigration and anti-Islam stance, Wilders was one of the few international leaders to come in defence of Indian political leader Nupur Sharma when she made comments on Prophet Muhammad during a TV debate last year. Sharma, belonging to the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), was condemned by the entire Muslim world, including the Gulf nations. Such was the retaliation against Sharma that she received death threats, forcing her to not only release an apology but also retreat from active public life. Wilders hailed Sharma as a hero and batted for her to receive the Nobel Prize. "Nupur Sharma is a hero who spoke nothing but the truth. The whole world should be proud of her. She deserves the Nobel Prize. And India is a Hindu nation, the Indian government is obliged to strongly defend Hindus against Islamic hate and violence," Wilders posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. In an interview with India Today, Wilders also criticised the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for releasing a statement that slammed India over Sharma's remarks. "I would say look at yourself in the mirror before you decide what you think about India or any other country. The OIC released a declaration about human rights and all these nations are attacking India. They put Sharia law above democracy and human rights," said Wilders. He said the OIC countries were the most intolerant nations having the worst records on human rights. "If you are a minority in those countries, you are persecuted and taken to jail. You lose freedom. India is a sovereign nation. We should not allow being lectured by them," he added. Akin to Sharma, Wilders has also received death threats for his largely anti-Islam views. As an opposition leader, he is heavily protected by the police and could see his security blanket increase if and when he takes oath as the PM. "India is a full democracy. Pakistan is a 100% terror state. So the choice is easy. Welcome home #Kashmir. #IndiaForKashmir," Wilders posted. In an interview with WION, Wilders said the Article was only a temporary move and thus scrapping it was the right call that should be supported by the Western world. "The decision to revoke Article 370 and 35 by the Indian government is the country's matter. I believe that the Western world should support India because its Home Minister Amit Shah told Parliament earlier this week that democracy was never fully implemented in Jammu and Kashmir under the Article," said Wilders. "That is why I say welcome home Kashmir. Those regions and people will develop more under Indian control rather than under the influence of the terror regime in Islamabad. India is our friend and we should support our friend," he added. Watch | The Netherlands to get first new prime minister in 13 years × What does the far-right leader want to achieve? According to exit polls, Wilders’ PVV won 35 seats in the 150-seat lower house of parliament, more than double the 17 he won at the last election. The main focus of Wilders' election campaign was to put a pause on immigration, with suggested moves like border closures and deporting illegal immigrants. "The Dutch hope that the people can get their country back and that we will ensure that the tsunami of asylum-seekers and immigration is reduced," Wilders said in his victory speech. Wilders has previously called Prophet Mohammad a "paedophile", Islam a "fascist ideology" and a "backward religion". (With inputs from agencies)
