Nepal rescuers are digging through flood-buried hydropower tunnels to reach over 100 trapped workers as rain and rising rivers hamper efforts. The disaster death toll has climbed to 750.

Nepal floods: Inside desperate tunnel rescue as over 100 workers remain trapped

The death toll from the catastrophic flash floods that tore through Nepal and parts of Tibet this week has climbed to750, as rescue teams battle worsening weather and treacherous terrain in a desperate search for more than 3,000 people still missing. Nepal has reported 734 deaths and 2,498 people missing, while authorities in Tibet confirmed 16 deaths and 546 missing.
Poor weather hampers rescue operations
Poor weather has repeatedly disrupted helicopter missions, complicating efforts to reach remote Himalayan communities cut off by landslides, mud and destroyed roads. In hard-hit Nuwakot district, aircraft resumed operations after a weather delay, ferrying food and other emergency supplies into isolated areas and evacuating survivors.Nepal says more than 3,700 people have been rescued so far. But the search has taken on added urgency around hydropower projects, where officials fear more than 100 workers may still be trapped inside tunnels at the Trishuli 3A and 3B sites.
Search intensifies for trapped hydropower workers
Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha said "rescue efforts are going on in multiple tunnel sites." Teams have managed to pump air into one tunnel after breaking through thick mud, while attempts are underway to send cameras inside.Specialist rescue teams from India and China have joined Nepalese forces, while mountain rescue experts are also being deployed.Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said finding those still missing was "currently our national priority."
Fresh flood fears after glacier collapse
The disaster has also triggered fears of further flooding after a new lake formed high in the Himalayas following the glacier collapse believed to have caused the initial devastation. Scientists say the collapse unleashed huge volumes of rock, ice and water into river valleys below.
US announces $3.6 million in aid
The United States has pledged more than $3.6 million in emergency assistance to Nepal as rescue efforts continue. The funding will support immediate humanitarian needs, including food aid expected to reach up to 10,000 households. Washington has also said it is coordinating with Nepalese authorities to ensure relief supplies reach communities affected by the devastating floods.

After Nepal’s U-turn on its stance on accepting foreign assistance, India has sent an 11-member team for medical and tunnel rescue operations. The team comprises doctors, paramedics, and reconnaissance personnel. The Reconnaissance operations to rescue the people trapped in the tunnel are expected to begin Saturday (Aug 29). This comes after the death toll crossed the 600 mark after the deadly floods near the Tibet border. As of now, 2,426 are reported missing, according to the country’s disaster agency. Meanwhile, China has confirmed that seven people were killed, while 554 remain missing in Tibet, bringing the total number of missing people to nearly 3,000.Nepal has also requested India and China to help construct 42 Bailey bridges to resume transport services in the flood-affected areas. These portable bridges can be assembled quickly without heavy machinery or special tools. Also read | Nepal-Tibet floods LIVE updates: Nepal death toll crosses 600, nearly 2,500 remain missingEarlier on Friday (Aug 28), Nepal’s foreign ministry said that it did not need foreign assistance for search and rescue operations despite help offered from several countries. Several foreign nationals are also reported missing in the disaster.“The offer for help is natural. Our security agencies are doing the search and rescue operation. For now we don’t require such help,” Lok Bahadur Chhetri, spokesperson for the foreign ministry. However, following international pressure, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said that the government is ready to take international assistance in cases where technical expertise is required for extremely complex physical structures. This comes after devastating floods swept through the Himalayan nation, leaving a massive trail of destruction. The US Geological Survey said the disaster was triggered by a glacial collapse, initially mistaken for a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. The resulting debris flow had “catastrophic” downstream impacts across Nepal and Tibet. Environmentalists have described the surge as being “like an inland tsunami”, travelling nearly 170 kilometres into Nepal.
