<p>Moscow authorities gave permission to the rally -- after a succession of demonstrations urging fair elections last summer were roughly dispersed -- and the street was packed by a flow of protesters, an AFP correspondent said.</p>

<p>"The Putin regime is a threat to humankind," said the slogan on one placard next to a portrait of Nemtsov.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Putin's policies are based on total lies," said another, quoting the liberal politician who was on assassinated in central Moscow on February 27, 2015.</p>

<p>"Russia without Putin!" the crowds chanted repeatedly as they began marching.</p>

<p>The White Counter monitor which counts attendance at protests said 22,300 people took part in the march. The interior ministry said 8,000 took part.</p>

<p><strong>'Stay in power by any means'</strong></p>

<p>Putin, who has dominated Russia for two decades, in January unleashed a political storm, proposing an overhaul of the constitution, the first changes to the basic law since 1993.</p>

<p>Analysts see the plan as beginning preparations for succession when Putin's fourth presidential term ends in 2024, while the opposition says the Kremlin strongman wants to remain leader for life.</p>

<p>"I think that this is a crime, that it is mocking the constitution," said Semyon Pevzner, a pensioner aged 75. "The only aim is to stay in power by any means possible."</p>

<p>Putin first came to power as prime minister in 1999 under Boris Yeltsin before becoming president in 2000. He served the maximum two consecutive terms between 2000 and 2008 before a four-year stint as prime minister.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He returned to the Kremlin in 2012 for a newly-expanded six-year mandate and was re-elected in 2018. But opponents fear he could remain Russia's number one even if the job of president nominally goes to someone else in 2024.</p>

<p>Kseniya Telmanova, a 21-year-old student, reflected that Putin had been president for her whole life, except her first few months. "Probably those were the best months of my life," she said, laughing. "The leaders should fear the fact they can lose power."</p>

<p>Russia is planning to hold a referendum on the constitutional amendments on April 22.</p>

<p>According to the Levada Center, an independent pollster, a quarter of Russians will back the constitutional proposals, while 56 per cent said they were still not sure why the changes were needed.</p>

<p>Forty-four per cent also said Putin should quit power in 2024, while 45 per cent said he should stay.</p>

<p><strong>'Against political repression'</strong></p>

<p>Around 2,000 people gathered for a similar demonstration in Russia's second city of Saint Petersburg on Saturday, clutching flowers, portraits of Nemtsov and banners reading "They feared you Boris".</p>

<p>"This is basically the only chance we have to go out and say that we are against what is going on in the country and against this police state," said Galina Zuiko, 55.</p>

<p>Nemtsov -- one of Putin's most vocal critics and a former deputy prime minister in the Yeltsin government -- was shot and killed on a Moscow bridge near the Kremlin.</p>

<p>In 2017, a court found a former security force officer from Chechnya guilty of his murder and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. Four other men were found guilty of involvement in the killing.</p>

<p>But Nemtsov's family and allies insist the authorities have failed to bring the masterminds to justice.</p>

<p>"We have not seen any major progress" in the probe, Navalny said in brief comments to pro-opposition channel TV Rain. "We will continue to turn out (every year) until this case is solved."</p>

<p>Protesters also urged authorities to release Russia's political prisoners, with a group of women holding a banner reading: "Mothers against political repression. Freedom to our children."</p>

Opposition urges 'Russia without Putin' in rally for slain liberal

<p>An attacker injured two people in a Moscow Orthodox church with a knife on Sunday before being arrested, police said, adding they were not treating the incident as terrorism.</p>

<p>The man came running into the altar area of the church in central Moscow and stabbed two assistants to the priest, the parish priest Kirill Sladkov said.</p>

<p>"He looked like an ordinary parishioner and didn't shout anything during the attack," Sladkov said, according to the website of the Moscow Patriarchate.</p>

<p>"He took out a knife and struck a blow to my assistant," later injuring a second person before being apprehended, Sladkov said.</p>

<p>Sladkov later wrote on his Instagram account that both men were out of the hospital and back home.</p>

<p>The 26-year-old alleged attacker, from the Lipetsk region south of Moscow, was overpowered by parishioners who held him until police arrived.</p>

<p>Interior ministry spokeswoman Irina Volk said police had opened an investigation into hooliganism and violence, adding that police also found a "package with a plant-based substance" at the scene, along with a knife and a pair of gloves.</p>

<p>There have been a small number of knife attacks in public places in recent years in Russia, some claimed by the Islamic State group, but none have been officially treated as terrorism cases.</p>

<p>An AFP correspondent in Idlib said a new convoy of Turkish armoured vehicles arrived Wednesday in the town of Binnish, northeast of Idlib city, in a new deployment.</p>

<p>But Syrian forces have been relentlessly advancing, seizing numerous towns and retaking full control of the crucial M5 highway that links major cities for the first time since 2012.</p>

<p>"We are determined to push back (regime forces) behind the borders of the Sochi deal by the end of February," said Erdogan.</p>

<p>"We will do whatever is necessary both on the ground and in the air without any hesitation and without any delay."</p>

<p>Erdogan also said that aircraft striking settlements in Idlib would "no longer move freely".</p>

<p>That followed reports that Turkish forces shot down a Syrian military helicopter this week in Idlib, though that has not been confirmed by Ankara.</p>

<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin and Erdogan spoke by phone on Wednesday, with the Kremlin saying they remained determined to implement existing ceasefire agreements.</p>

<p>The Turkish presidency confirmed the call but did not provide details.</p>

<p>A Russian delegation including military and intelligence officials held two rounds of talks in Ankara this week, but no concrete agreement emerged.</p>

<p>The US sanctions slapped on a controversial <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-threatens-sanctions-over-russia-germany-gas-pipeline-190030/amp">Russian gas pipeline</a> to Europe will likely delay the project's completion by several months to the second half of 2020, a top German official said Monday.</p>

<p>"I expect the pipeline to be finished in the second half of 2020," Peter Beyer, Chancellor <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/merkels-coalition-in-crisis-talks-after-european-union-vote-debacle-221923">Angela Merkel</a>'s transatlantic coordinator, told German radio.</p>

<p>The Nord Stream 2 pipeline was initially slated for completion in early 2020 with a view to being operational in mid-2020.</p>

<p>Moscow and Berlin have reacted angrily to the sanctions imposed by Washington on Friday over the 9.5 billion euro ($10.6 billion) pipeline under the Baltic Sea that aims to double Russia's natural gas deliveries to Germany.</p>

<p>The American announcement of asset freezes and visa bans targeting companies working on the project immediately led to Swiss pipe-laying contractor Allseas halting its work.</p>

<p>Speaking to Deutschlandfunk radio, Beyer said that although the sanctions would "postpone the completion" of the pipeline, he believed "alternative" solutions could be found that would nonetheless "be more expensive".</p>

<p>The United States has long opposed Nord Stream 2, saying the pipeline would give Russia too much influence over security and economic issues in western Europe.</p>

<p>It would also allow Russia to reroute supplies from overland pipes running through Ukraine, with Kiev expressing concerns that this would deprive them of vital leverage over its giant neighbour.</p>

<p>Critics however have also pointed out that Washington's resistance to Nord Stream 2 comes as the US is trying to sell more of its own, more costly liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe.</p>

<p>Relying more on American LNG "would be considerably more expensive for German consumers," Beyer said.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/russian-government-unable-to-find-any-documents-on-whereabouts-of-subhash-chandra-bose-mea-238154">Russian government </a>on Monday insisted the sanctions would not be allowed to derail the project as Moscow weighs its response to Washington.</p>

<p>"In any case, we won't leave such steps unanswered," he said.</p>

<p>"As to when and how this will be done, this will depend on Russia's national interest."</p>

<p>In Berlin, Merkel's spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said discussions were ongoing with the different parties to find a solution.</p>

<p>"And we will continue to express our view that we don't condone such extra-territorial sanctions," she said.</p>

<p>Russia reeled from a four-year ban from global sports on Monday, with athletes in shock and the government quick to blame "anti-Russian hysteria".</p>

<p>The head of Russia's anti-doping agency meanwhile said his country had <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/no-chance-of-winning-wada-ban-appeal-russia-anti-doping-chief-267261">"no chance"</a> of winning an appeal of the ban, which he described as a tragedy for clean athletes.</p>

<p>The World Anti-Doping Agency on Monday banned Russia from international competitions including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.</p>

<p>It accused Russia of falsifying laboratory doping data handed over earlier this year to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/russia-could-face-olympic-ban-in-wada-decision-due-monday-266958">investigators probing claims</a> of widespread doping.</p>

<p>Russia can appeal the ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but the head of its RUSADA anti-doping agency, Yuri Ganus, said he doubted it would be successful.</p>

<p>"There is no chance of winning this case in court," Ganus told AFP. "This is a tragedy. Clean athletes are seeing their rights limited."</p>

<p>Under the sanctions, Russian sportsmen and women will still be allowed to compete at the Olympics next year but only if they can demonstrate that they were not part of what WADA believes was a state-sponsored system of doping.</p>

<p>Russian government officials will be barred from attending any major events, while the country will lose the right to host, or even bid, for tournaments.</p>

<p><strong>'This is politics'</strong></p>

<p>While admitting there have been instances of doping, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/wada-seeks-russia-ban-over-doping-data-manipulation-264626">Russian officials</a> say the country is no worse than any other. Some have accused other countries of pursuing the ban to remove Russian athletes from competition.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Monday that it was "impossible to deny" that doping had taken place but that those involved had already been punished.</p>

<p>"This is the continuation of this anti-Russian hysteria that has already become chronic," Medvedev told Russian news agencies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Many in Russian sports agreed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The decision that was taken today was political and not simply about sports," the head of Russia's Biathlon Union, Vladimir Drachev, told Russia-24 state television.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I have no words... How can you mock athletes who have been preparing all their lives for this?" said Aslanbek Khushtov, who won wrestling gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.</p>

<p>"Unfortunately this is politics, I don't smell any sport here," he told state news agency TASS.</p>

<p>The scandal has tainted Russia's sporting reputation since the revelation of large-scale state-sponsored doping aimed at improving its medal performance at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.</p>

<p>Russian track and field athletes were barred from competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics although Russians competing in other events were allowed to take part.</p>
