The Russian government on Thursday (September 14) said it was expelling two US diplomats on accusations of collaborating with a spy. According to the Kremlin, the two diplomats had maintained contact with a Russian national who worked for the US Mission and had been accused of being an 'informant'. The Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement informed it had summoned US envoy Lynne Tracy, instructing her that embassy First Secretary Jeffrey Sillin and Second Secretary David Bernstein must leave the country within seven days. Sillin and Bernstein were accused of having conducted "illegal activities by liaising with a Russian citizen, (Robert) Shonov". "It was also emphasised (to Tracy) that illegal activities of the US diplomatic mission, including interference in the internal affairs of the host country, are unacceptable and will be resolutely suppressed," it said. "The Russian side expects Washington to draw the right conclusions and refrain from confrontational steps." Also read | Who is Vadim Krasikov? Russia deploys 32 kamikaze drones in attack on Kyiv, 25 intercepted

Kremlin has reacted after the UK announced that it would declare the Wagner group a "terrorist" organisation. Speaking with media personnel, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented that the Russian mercenary group does not legally exist in the first place. “There’s nothing to comment on. Perhaps one can add only that, legally speaking, there is no such group.”

The UK government decided to make the move saying that this action would make Wagner illegal. Media reports quoting Home Secretary Suella Braverman said, "Wagner is a violent and destructive organisation which has acted as a military tool of Vladimir Putin's Russia overseas."

"While Putin's regime decides what to do with the monster it created, Wagner's continuing destabilising activities only continue to serve the Kremlin's political goals,” the minister reportedly added.

'Legally, there is no such group...': Kremlin reacts as UK to declare Wagner a terror group

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned over the potential return of US nuclear weapons to British soil. While speaking during a news briefing, she said that such a move would be seen as a "step towards escalation".

"If this step is ever made, we will view it as escalation, as a step toward escalation that would take things to a direction that is quite opposite to addressing the pressing issue of pulling all nuclear weapons out of European countries," she said. Some media reports have said that US nukes would return to the UK after a 15-year hiatus.

Zakharova's comments were in response to reports indicating an item in the 2024 US Air Force budget. This allocation, as per media reports, is for the construction of a dormitory at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, designated for personnel involved in a "potential surety mission." This term is reportedly a military jargon referring to nuclear safety and security operations.

Potential escalation

Zakharova strongly warned against any such move by the US and called it a destabilising practice. She said that it entails joint planning and regular practice for nuclear attacks on Russian targets from non-nuclear European nations. The Russian diplomat also pledged to intensify efforts to demand the return of all US nuclear weapons to American territory. She argued that this step should precede the dismantling of infrastructure enabling the deployment of such weapons in Europe.

In an attempt to cement their authority in the occupied regions, Russian authorities on Thursday (August 31) began holding elections in parts of Moscow-annexed Ukrainian territories. Russia currently controls one-fifth of Ukraine's territory: the Crimea peninsula annexed in 2014, and parts of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions annexed in 2022.

Moscow's handpicked governors, which include veteran pro-Russian politicians and others known only locally, are currently seeking full terms of office in the four regions. The polls will conclude on September 10, when Russia holds regional polls, according to a Reuters report.

All governors have the endorsement of President Vladimir Putin after joining the Kremlin's United Russia bloc with fanfare in recent months. Consequently, most are facing only nominal opposition.
