In a concerning development, another cheetah named Shaurya has died in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park, marking the 10th fatality since the cheetah reintroduction project commenced in 2022.

The Namibian cheetah's death&nbsp;on Tuesday&nbsp;(Jan&nbsp;16), adds to the alarming count of seven adults and three cubs lost at the national park, primarily due to various infections.

Shaurya's demise occurred around 3:17 pm, and the cause of death will be determined after post-mortem examination, according to an official statement by the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Director of the Lion Project.

The tracking team noticed incoordination and a staggering gait around 11 am, prompting the cheetah's tranquilisation. Although initially revived, complications arose post-revival, leading to a failed response to CPR.

<h2>Previous cheetah deaths and causes</h2>

The last recorded cheetah death in Kuno National Park was reported on August 2, 2023. Infections caused by insects during the monsoon season were cited by the government as the primary cause for the previous two deaths.

The fatalities have raised concerns and even reached the Supreme Court, which, in the previous year, expressed no reason to question the central government's cheetah reintroduction efforts.

Cheetahs were declared extinct in India in 1952. The ambitious reintroduction project began in 2022, bringing 20 adult cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa in two batches.

Despite the birth of four cubs in the park, the high mortality rate, with three cubs and six adults dying&nbsp;within five months until August 2023, raised significant concerns over Project Cheetah.

The Supreme Court, addressing the issue of multiple cheetah deaths, affirmed that there was no basis to question the central government's reintroduction efforts.

Despite the setbacks, Project Cheetah's head, SP Yadav, shared plans to import another batch of cheetahs from South Africa for introduction in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.

With Ram Mandir consecration few days ahead, PM Modi visits temples in southern India

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (Jan 16), referring to the Ram Mandir consecration ceremony in Ayodhya as ‘Modi’s function’.

"The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh [RSS]&nbsp;and the Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP] have made the January 22nd function a completely political Narendra Modi function. It's an RSS-BJP function and I think that is why the Congress president [Mallikarjun Kharge] said that he would not attend the function," said Gandhi.

"We are open to all religions, all practices. Even the authorities of the Hindu religion, the biggest authorities of the Hindu religion, have made their view public about what they think about the January 22 function, that it is a political function," he said.

"So it is difficult for us to go to a political function which is designed around the Prime Minister of India and designed around the RSS," he added.

<h2>Senior Congress leaders refuse to attend Jan 22 ceremony</h2>

Rahul Gandhi's comments followed a refusal from the senior leadership of the Congress to attend the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22. The party asserted that the consecration event had unmistakably transformed into an event aligned with the RSS/BJP.

"Lord Ram is worshipped by millions in our country. Religion is a personal matter. But the RSS/BJP have long made a political project of the temple in Ayodhya. The inauguration of the incomplete temple by the leaders of the BJP and the RSS has obviously been brought forward for electoral gain. While abiding by the 2019 Supreme Court judgment and honouring the sentiments of millions who revere Lord Ram, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Shri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have respectfully declined the invitation to what is clearly an RSS/BJP event," the Congress party said in a statement.

This comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions due to controversial comments made by Maldivian ministers, including Rameez, directed at PM Modi.

The controversy erupted when PM Modi's efforts to promote the Indian archepelago of Lakshadweep as a tourist destination sparked backlash from some Maldivian ministers.

PM Modi's viral social media posts, showcasing him snorkeling, led to suggestions on social media proposing Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist spot to the Maldives.

<h2>Criticism and outrage</h2>

Zahid Rameez, in particular, expressed skepticism about the competition posed by Lakshadweep, stating, "The move is great. However, the idea of competing with us is delusional. How can they provide the service we offer? How can they be so clean? The permanent smell in the rooms will be the biggest downfall."

This prompted a significant uproar, both within the Maldives and internationally.

In response to the derogatory remarks against PM Modi, Maldives took swift action, suspending ministers Maryam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid.

The move was met with widespread criticism within the country, with prominent leaders condemning the statements against India, its "closest neighbour."

The controversy erupted when PM Modi's efforts to promote the Indian archepelago of Lakshadweep as a tourist destination sparked backlash from some Maldivian ministers.
