As per a report in ESPN,&nbsp;several sources revealed that Ippei Mizuhara -- Ohtani's interpreter -- had run up large debts to a Californian bookmaker. At first, a spokesperson for the player said Ohtani had transferred $4.5 million in order to cover Mizuhara’s debts. However, on being enquired further by ESPN, the spokesperson changed his earlier claim and said Ohtani’s lawyers would release a statement soon.

“In the course of responding to recent media inquiries, we discovered that Shohei has been the victim of a massive theft, and we are turning the matter over to the authorities,” read the statement from Berk Brettler LLP on Wednesday (March 20).&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Mizuhara mentioned that Ohtani -- who is Japan's biggest baseball sta&nbsp;-- had helped him cover the gambling debts.

ESPN also spotted two documents comprising payments of $500,000 in Ohtani’s name from September-October. The website reported that&nbsp;the payments were made to an associate of Mathew Bowyer, an illegal bookmarker with whom Mizuhara was in touch to place gambling bets (after stealing from Ohtani). Bowyer's bookmaking operation is under scanner and being investigated by federal investigators.

Mizuhara said on Tuesday, "Obviously, he [Ohtani] wasn’t happy about [the debt] and said he would help me out to make sure I never do this again. He decided to pay it off for me. I want everyone to know Shohei had zero involvement in betting. I want people to know I did not know this was illegal. I learned my lesson the hard way. I will never do sports betting ever again."

Mizuhara further added,&nbsp;"I never bet on baseball. That’s 100%. I knew that rule ... We have a meeting about that in spring training."

Notably, Ohtani and Mizuhara have been close friends beyond their working relationship. Mizuhara became Ohtani’s translator ever since the star moved from Japan to play for the Los Angeles Angels in 2018. The current development has surely put their relationship under test.

The excitement was echoed by Takahiro Ogawa, a shopper in Tokyo's upscale Ginza district.&nbsp;

"I was really amazed," the 54-year-old told AFP, saying the size of the deal had surpassed even original speculation of a whopping 80 billion yen.&nbsp;

"I wish I could get a slice of it."

Erika Iwasaki, 33, said she was proud of Ohtani.&nbsp;

"I was surprised at the price first, but I am really happy that a person who is valued so much is actually from Japan."&nbsp;

The Arizona Diamondbacks upset the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 to reach the World Series for the first time in 22 years on Tuesday (Oct 25). The Diamondbacks had been left staring at disappointment in their best-of-seven National League Championship Series after defeat in game five at home left them 3-2 down.

But after tying the series in game six in Philadelphia on Monday, Arizona sealed a remarkable comeback with another win on the road at Citizens Bank Park to advance to a World Series showdown against the Texas Rangers on Friday. "We just believed in each other, and believed in our guys," said Diamondbacks rookie Corbin Carroll, who contributed three crucial hits.

"We know what we have in that clubhouse and it's special. We've done it all year, to be at this point is unbelievable."

Reliever Kevin Ginkel, who claimed five outs in the seventh and eighth innings, added: "This team battles. We find different ways to win games."

"We've slugged, we've pitched, we've played defence, we've run the bases really well...I'm going to the World Series. It's insane."

It was another gutsy performance by the Diamondbacks line-up, who seized the few scoring opportunities that came their way to edge into a 4-2 lead as their bullpen shut down the vaunted Phillies offence. Kyle Schwarber blasted two home runs as the Philadelphia Phillies offence erupted in a 10-0 drubbing of the Arizona Diamondbacks in Major League Baseball's playoffs on Tuesday (Oct 18). Big-hitting left fielder Schwarber pounced in the third and sixth innings as the Phillies took a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven National League Championship Series in Philadelphia.

The winner of the series will face either the Houston Astros or Texas Rangers in the World Series later this month. On Tuesday's evidence, few would bet against the Phillies advancing to the Fall Classic after another dynamic display of hitting.

Shortstop Trea Turner kicked off the rout in the first inning, crushing a 421-foot solo shot to left centre field off Arizona starting pitcher Merrill Kelly to make it 1-0.

Schwarber's first homer of the night in the third inning made it 2-0, and another off Kelly in the sixth inning put the Phillies into a 3-0 lead.

All six umpires said they believed Abreu intentionally threw the ball at Garcia, with punishment from MLB taking into account the dangerous nature of the pitch and possible player safety issues.

Asked where he would rank the blast among his post-season homer, Altuve said, "Number one, because it was tonight, it just happened. I'm really happy."

"We were really down. We didn't want to go home down by one... so it was good to hit that one and get the team to win."

It came after Texas outfielder Adolis Garcia crushed a three-run homer in the sixth to give the Rangers a 4-2 lead before he was tossed in the eighth as intense emotions boiled over.

The Astros, who downed Philadelphia in last year's World Series, have won 19 of their past 22 away games and seven in a row at Texas.

The game first turned in the sixth when Garcia belted his fourth homer of the playoffs off Astros starting pitcher Justin Verlander to give Texas a two-run edge.

The 30-year-old Cuban slugger forcefully threw his bat to the ground as he began to round the bases after giving a home team the lead for the first time in the series.

Tensions flared in the bottom of the eighth when Abreu hit Garcia with a fastball and Garcia reacted angrily, confronting Houston players and needing teammates to restrain him after both squads ran off the benches and onto the field.

"Things just happened. He got a little mad but hopefully it doesn't go beyond this and we keep playing a beautiful series," Altuve said of Garcia.

Umpires decided Abreu deliberately hit Garcia with the pitch and tossed him from the game. Garcia was ejected as well as Baker, who argued in vain the Astros didn't want to put the Texas star on base.

"I know Abreu. I know he's not trying to hit anybody in a two-run game in the post-season," Astros star Alex Bregman said. "Everyone is amped up because this is what we play for."

Houston got out of the inning without allowing another run. Astros pinch-hitter Yainer Diaz singled, Jon Singleton walked and Altuve smashed the ball over the left-field wall to give the Astros the lead.

"I was just focused on getting one pitch in the middle I could really hit," Altuve said. "I was just trying to focus on something I could handle and it happened."

Mitch Garver and Jonah Heim singled for Texas in the ninth but Marcus Semien lined out, Corey Seager flew out and Evan Carter struck out to end the game.

Texas pitcher Jordan Montgomery, who threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings in the series opener, surrendered a solo homer to Houston's Bregman in the first inning.

Texas pulled level at 1-1 in the fifth inning when Nathaniel Lowe blasted a solo homer over the left-field wall.

The Astros regained the lead in the sixth when Bregman walked, took third base on a single to right field by Yordan Alvarez and scored when Abreu bounced a single off Texas shortstop Seager.

Yordan Alvarez swatted a solo shot to right field to make it 7-1 and then Abreu uncorked his second homer to make it 9-1.

Houston can wrap up the series with victory in game four in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

Robinson, an 18-time MLB All-Star, helped the Orioles win World Series crowns in 1966 and 1971 and captured 16 consecutive American League Gold Gloves as the top fielding third baseman from 1960-1975.

Robinson was known for spectacular diving stops of line drives in baseball's "hot corner" that earned him the nickname "Human Vacuum Cleaner" and for amazing throw outs at first base.

A moment of silence was held for Robinson before Tuesday's home game against Washington, where the stadium announcer read a tribute to his epic career.

"Brooks Robinson truly was 'Mr. Oriole,'" the tribute said. "Third basemen from all levels of the game will forever look to Brooks for inspiration."

Famed Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer, a television commentator for the club, broke down in tears as he spoke about his former teammate.

"I don't think we're ever really going to lose him," Palmer said. "For all of us that knew him, he was the best. We all know how special a person he was."

Robinson, whose jersey number 5 was retired by the Orioles, was the 1964 American League Most Valuable Player and the 1970 World Series MVP, when the Orioles beat Cincinnati for the title.

He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983, the first time a third baseman was inducted in his first opportunity, after a career in which he batted .267 with 2,848 hits, 268 home runs and 1,357 runs batted in.

The 27-year-old Dominican right-hander first tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid in May of last year and received an 80-game ban from MLB.

Mejia's second positive test for the performance-enhancing substance led MLB to issue what equals a full season ban to the Brewers reliever immediately as a repeat offender under its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program with the players union.

"The Milwaukee Brewers fully support MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and share in the goal of eliminating performance-enhancing substances from our game," said, Brewers general manager Matt Arnold.

Baseball: Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Mejia hit with 162-game MLB doping ban

Japanese baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani underwent surgery to repair his injured elbow on Tuesday, with a top sports injury surgeon stating that the Los Angeles Angels ace will be ready to hit and pitch again in 2025.

Ohtani has not pitched since being diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right elbow last month, and has since been shut down for the remainder of the regular season after suffering a side strain.&nbsp;

"Shohei had his procedure this morning at Kerlan &amp; Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles," Ohtani's agent Nez Balelo said in a statement on Tuesday.&nbsp;

"The final decision and type of procedure was made with a heavy emphasis on the big picture. Shohei wanted to make sure the direction taken gave him every opportunity to hit and pitch for many years to come."

Los Angeles surgeon Neal ElAttrache, who last week operated on Aaron Rodgers after the New York Jets quarterback ruptured his Achilles tendon, performed the procedure on Tuesday.

ElAttrache said Ohtani would be fit in time to hit for the start of the 2024 season, and would be able to hit and pitch by 2025.

"The ultimate plan, after deliberation with Shohei, was to repair the issue at hand and to reinforce the healthy ligament in place while adding viable tissue for the longevity of the elbow," ElAttrache said.&nbsp;

"I expect full recovery and he'll be ready to hit without any restrictions come opening day of 2024 and (hit and pitch) come 2025."

Ohtani meanwhile vowed to make a full recovery after saying the procedure "went very well."

Ohtani's future has been shrouded in uncertainty since his elbow injury, with the star entering free agency at the end of the season.

The 29-year-old is expected to be the subject of a frenzied bidding war during the off-season with several clubs expected to make a run to land his signature.

Ohtani, described as the best two-way threat since Babe Ruth, had been enjoying a stellar season, smashing 44 home runs while boasting a 3.14 ERA from the mound with 167 strikeouts from 132 innings.

Major League Baseball placed Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias on administrative leave Wednesday, three days after police arrested him on suspicion of felony domestic violence.

The 27-year-old Mexican left-hander didn't travel with the Dodgers to Miami this week after he was arrested Sunday night outside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, where he had watched the Major League Soccer match between LAFC and Inter Miami.

He was taken into custody on charges of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, which can be filed as a felony or misdemeanor, and released Monday on a $50,000 bond.

Booking records showed he was scheduled to appear in court on September 27.

"Per an agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, Julio Urias has been placed on Administrative Leave until further notice as MLB continues its ongoing investigation," MLB said in a statement.

"The administrative leave, which is effective immediately, is not disciplinary under the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. We will refrain from further comment until the appropriate time."

A player on administrative league is still paid, but is removed from a team's roster.

MLB can unilaterally place a player on administrative leave for seven days under the joint domestic-violence policy and the leave can be renewed with approval of the MLB Players Association.

"The Dodgers take all allegations of the kind in this case very seriously, and we do not condone or excuse any acts of domestic violence," the Dodgers said in a statement of their own.

"We are fully cooperating with MLB's investigation and support MLB's and the Commissioner's enforcement of the policy."

Authorities have given few details of the incident that led to the charge, but a spokesperson for Exposition Park, where BMO Field is located, said Wednesday that he was arrested when officers of the Exposition Park Department of Public Safety had probable cause to believe he attacked a woman.

Urias was involved in a May 2019 incident at a mall parking lot in Beverly Hills where he was accused of shoving a woman to the ground.

While he was not prosecuted over the matter, Urias was suspended for 20 games for violating MLB's domestic violence policy.

Urias, who helped the Dodgers win the 2020 World Series, had the best record in the National League in 2021 at 20-3, and last year had the lowest earned-run average in the NL at 2.16 while going 17-7.

Urias is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Speaking about the Ashes, Australia are currently 1-0 up after they won the first Test in Birmingham in a sensational manner. Lyon was at the crease with his skipper Pat Cummins who hit the winnings runs in dying moments of the game on day 5.

Anderson, on the other hand, didn't have a great game as he managed just one wicket on the flat Edgbaston surface. The veteran, however, was sure that England will bounce back.

“I think we’ll go more positive, more aggressive, more entertaining,”

A heated and animated discussion followed and Machado got ejected eventually. Machado, who recently signed a 11-year, $350 million extension deal with the Padres, said that he's going to have to make a big adjustment going forward.

"I'm going to have to make a big adjustment. I might be 0-1 down a lot this year," said the Padres' star. "It's super fast. There's definitely going to be an adjustment period, but going down in the history books," added Machado.

Machado's strike out decision clearly didn't go down well with Padres manager Bob Melvin has he got into the argument with umpire Kulpa as well. Melvin was also escorted out of the ballpark by another umpire in his 10th Major League ejection of his career.

Unless Rendon lodges an appeal, the suspension will be effective immediately, ruling him out of the Angels' road game in Seattle later Monday.

In video of last week's spat, taken as Rendon returned to the clubhouse after the Angels' Opening Day loss to the Athletics in Oakland, the player can be heard asking the fan "What did you say? ... you called me a bitch, huh?"

After the fan denies it, Rendon grabs the front of his shirt through the guardrails.

He then curses at him and swipes a hand towards the fan's hat.

Rendon is in his 11th MLB season, but spent much of the past two campaigns on the injured list with a wrist tendon injury and hip trouble.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is investing the incident wherein Los Angeles Angles third baseman Anthony Rendon can be seen in an confrontation with an Oakland Athletics fan during the season opening match on Thursday.

"We are aware of the video and we are now looking into the matter," said MLB in a statement.

A video has been making rounds on social media in which Rendon can be seen in a heated argument with the fan and took a swipe at him as well. In the video, Rendon takes fan on by his shirt through the guardrails. The Angels star accuses the fan of calling him a 'b****.'

The 12-second video further shows Rendon continuing with the accusation despite the fan denying it. The third baseman continues with the accusation and call the fan 'mo****fu****' before taking a swipe at him. The swipe, however, doesn't connect and the players lets go fan and moves to leave the area. Have a look at the video below:

Shohei Ohtani is expected to earn a Major League Baseball (MLB) record $65 million for the 2023 season including endorsements, according to an annual list published by Forbes magazine, making the Japanese two-way standout the highest paid player in the sport.

The amount includes the one-year, $30 million contract extension that Ohtani, 28, signed with the Los Angeles Angels last October as part of an agreement to avoid arbitration.

New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer was second on the overall list with $59.3 million. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, who signed a nine-year, $360 million deal in December to remain in New York, took the third spot ($44.5 million).

Mets pitcher Justin Verlander ($43.3 million) and Ohtani's Angels team mate Mike Trout ($39.5 million) rounded out the top five.

Ohtani is expected to make at least $35 million from endorsements, according to Forbes, up from $6 million in 2021 and $20 million in 2022. The magazine's endorsement revenue estimates showed a substantial gap between Ohtani and his peers.

After nearly 150 years of ploughing its own unapologetically somnolent furrow in an increasingly frenetic US sporting landscape, baseball is finally hitting the accelerator.

But new rules designed to make "America's pastime" a faster, more fan-friendly spectacle have divided opinion after being rolled out in pre-season games which got under way last week.

The biggest talking point has been the introduction of a pitch clock that sets fixed time limits for pitchers and batters.

Under the new rules, pitchers have 15 seconds to begin their throwing motion if the bases are empty, and 20 seconds when runners are on base.&nbsp;

Pitchers will be charged a ball if they are unable to get a pitch off before the clock runs out.

Batters, meanwhile, must be ready to receive a pitch by the time eight seconds are left on the countdown clock. Failure to do so will incur an automatic strike.

The pitch clock is aimed at reducing the length of a typical MLB game -- and early signs are that the innovation is working.

In the 2022 season, nine-inning games took an average of 3 hours 3 minutes and 44 seconds to complete.

But in the opening days of the 2023 pre-season, games have routinely finished well under the three-hour mark, averaging at around 2hrs 37mins.

"I think it definitely speeds up the game," New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said. "I think this pitch clock is going be a good thing for everybody."

There have been hiccups, however.&nbsp;

Baseball purists grimaced at the ending to Saturday's game between Atlanta and Boston when Braves slugger Cal Conley was called out for failing to get into the batter's box on time in the bottom of the ninth inning with bases loaded.&nbsp;

The anti-climactic ending -- akin to a&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;match being settled by a foot fault -- drew boos from fans and general bafflement from Conley, who initially thought he had drawn a walk to win the game until being informed of his strikeout.&nbsp;

Yet, so far, the innovation has been broadly welcomed by coaches and players across baseball as the sport bids to arrest long-term declines in attendance and television viewership.

"The whole purpose is to speed up the game and it was good," said Boston manager Alex Cora, who believes players will swiftly adapt to the faster pace.

"As players, you're going to get used to it. I watched a lot of bullpen the first few weeks with the clock.&nbsp;

"At the beginning, it felt rushed but then after that, I was like, 'It's okay.'

Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli also signalled his approval.&nbsp;

"The goal is to keep things flowing," Baldelli said. "Just keep the game going. I think it's probably the pace and the time you're hoping for when you're playing a Major League Baseball game."

San Diego Padres shortstop Manny Machado meanwhile -- who became the first player in pre-season to incur a strike for a pitch clock violation -- believes the new rules could lead to "crazy shit".

"You're going to have some players who are going to be freakin' angry and pissed off," Machado USA Today.

"You're going to have players pissed off at the umpires who are just following the rules. We're going to be seeing some crazy shit for sure."

Some pitchers, however, believe the introduction of the clock has handed them a weapon they can use to unsettle batters.

"I can completely dictate pace," said New York Mets ace Max Scherzer.&nbsp;

"I love it... I can work extremely quickly or I can work extremely slow. There is another layer here to be able to mess with the hitter's timing."

Other rule changes introduced this season will see larger bases, which aims to reduce injuries from collisions while increasing offense by encouraging more steals.&nbsp;

Another change aims to restrict teams from setting up ultra-defensive fielding formations, again with the goal of boosting offense.

"Hopefully these rule changes kind of implement a little bit more action and entertainment for the casual fan and not just always the diehard baseball fan," Minnesota outfielder Joey Gallo said on the "Baseball Isn't Boring" podcast recently.&nbsp;

"I think, for baseball, you're trying to attract a bigger, grander audience. And it's hard to do that if it's just not exciting to watch and slow-paced games."

But new rules designed to make "America's pastime" a faster, more fan-friendly spectacle have divided opinion after being rolled out in pre-season games which got under way last week. The biggest talking point has been the introduction of a pitch clock that sets fixed time limits for pitchers and batters. Under the new rules, pitchers have 15 seconds to begin their throwing motion if the bases are empty, and 20 seconds when runners are on base. Pitchers will be charged a ball if they are unable to get a pitch off before the clock runs out. Batters, meanwhile, must be ready to receive a pitch by the time eight seconds are left on the countdown clock. Failure to do so will incur an automatic strike. The pitch clock is aimed at reducing the length of a typical MLB game -- and early signs are that the innovation is working. In the 2022 season, nine-inning games took an average of 3 hours 3 minutes and 44 seconds to complete. But in the opening days of the 2023 pre-season, games have routinely finished well under the three-hour mark, averaging at around 2hrs 37mins. "I think it definitely speeds up the game," New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said. "I think this pitch clock is going be a good thing for everybody." There have been hiccups, however. MLB: New rules attract mix-bag reactions as spring training starts

Third baseman Manny Machado is reportedly going to sign a 11-year, $350 million extension deal with his current team, the San Diego Padres, as per ESPN. Machado has been with the Padres since 2019 after signing 10-year, $300 million deal.

The 30-year-old star third baseman, however, had said last week that he wanted to let go five years and $150 million of his current deal after the initial extension negotiations didn't work out. However, with this new deal in sight, Machado staying with the Padres for a long-time remains an actual possibility.

In the last season, the third baseman had one his best years in the Major League Baseball (MLB) with 32 home runs and 102 RBIs. He also was second on the list of National League (NL) MVP voting. The Padres, who are trying to win their maiden World Series, would be very happy to keep Machado.

Notably, the Padres reached the National League Championship Series last season but lost to the Philadelphia Phillies. With Machado in their ranks along with shortstop Juan Soto, Xander Bogaerts, and Fernando Tatis Jr., the Padres will definitely have a strong side to compete for the World Series.

During his ongoing sting with the Padres, Machado has hit 108 HRs and has batted in 340 runs while hitting .280/.352/.504 in four seasons. He also managed to win a Gold Gloves at third base. So far, he has had six 30-plus-homer seasons since 2012, the year he debuted with the Baltimore Orioles.

Machado spent six seasons with the Orioles, from 2012-2017, before going to LA to spend an year with the Dodgers in 2018 and eventually came to the Padres. Machado, who debuted in MLB just before turning 20, was getting touted as a potential MVP as soon as by his fourth year in the league.

The deal with the Padres, if and when it goes through, would ensure the fourth-largest guarantee money in the game's history, behind Mike Trout, Mookie Betts and Aaron Judge.&nbsp;

There aren't many in the world of sports who have switched from one game to another. However, there are still some big names who have done the unthinkable by playing two sports professionally. Michael Jordan (Basketball to baseball), Sonny Bill Williams (Rugby to boxing), Andrew Flintoff (from cricket to boxing) and many others make the cut. However, can you think of one such name in Indian sports?

Well, Dinesh Patel is one such gutsy sportsman to have switched from being a javelin thrower to turning into a baseball player. The 32-year-old is a rarity in Indian sports in every sense. Being a javelin thrower, he delved into uncharted territory and took up baseball, a sport of which not many Indians can boost of or enjoy the bragging rights.

Taking up the sport to improve his financial situation, Dinesh has come a long way and remains the torch-bearer of baseball in India.&nbsp;He competed in the Indian reality show "Million Dollar Arm" in 2008, having never picked up a baseball before, and emerged on top of over 37,000 competitors in the above-mentioned reality show; designed to find new baseball talents. In addition, Dinesh reached 90 mph during a tryout, intriguing the Pittsburgh Pirates, who acquired the services of Rinku Singh and him. They are, thus, the first players from India to sign deals in Organized Baseball.

Note: Rinku Singh is the&nbsp;first Indian to play baseball and now is a professional wrestler.

In an exclusive interaction with www.wionnews.com's Aditya Sahay, Dinesh recalled his topsy-turvy journey, dived into the scope of baseball in the country and spoke about Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's influence on him. Excerpts:&nbsp;

You are a rarity in all sense. A baseball player from India, having competed in Indian reality show "Million Dollar Arm" after never having picked up a baseball before, how has the journey unfolded? Define your love for the sport.&nbsp;

Actually, I was a javelin thrower when I got to know about the contest, i.e. Million Dollar Arm. We participated only for the money, to be honest, and then Rinku (Singh) and I took part in it and, thus, I came into baseball. We were in the United States for three years where we played and learned about the game.&nbsp;

I know it is tough to switch from one sport to another but I went with my instincts. Back then, I had played nationals in javelin. Had I represented in the Olympics, it might have helped me financially but that didn't happen. So I decided to switch from javelin to baseball. The contest, thus, came as a blessing in disguise.&nbsp;

When I participated in the Million Dollar Arm, we just wanted to give our best to improve our financial health and also because we had no other way to go. Leaving javelin,&nbsp;it became a do-or-die scenario (pauses).

Rinku&nbsp;and you are first players from India to sign deals in Organised Baseball.&nbsp;What do you opine about the future of this game in India?&nbsp;

Baseball isn't a talked-about game in the country. Even we didn't know about it before taking it up as a professional. However, I've seen changes taking place in many parts (in India). People have started playing baseball in Bengaluru, Delhi and even in Madhya Pradesh. Nonetheless, any new game takes time to spread like wildfire across the country. This popularity can be achieved through MLB. I can feel that it will sow the seeds for baseball's popularity. Much like how IPL has done wonders and helped cricket flourish even further since 2008.&nbsp;

What does Dinesh Patel want to achieve after his end of career in baseball? Any set target or will you be content in widening the reach of the sport among the countrymen?&nbsp;

In Asia, MLB has an office in China. Similarly, MLB has also opened (an office) in India. It will help the game grow and spread out in various parts. This is just a start but surely a promising one. In our nation, baseball is obviously far from being developed. Whatever MLB is doing, the good players will be identified and they can hone their skills by going to the US and train extensively. Or, if the game widens in India itself, they can work on their game here and even help it spread further. I'll be glad if we reach this level.

I follow Sachin Tendulkar. Not even was he a legendary cricketer, but he's a very good person off the field as well. One thing I've tried to imbibe from the Master Blaster is his calmness and always being focused towards the job in hand. I believe I'm very similar in that aspect.&nbsp;

Sports is a way of life. However, it is very tough. It imparts various life-lessons to individuals, gives them a sense of security on succeeding and can also be very harsh during failures. A word for the rising talents in the country?&nbsp;

I would want to say that youngsters should play only the sport they love. Play it with all your heart. Set a high target for yourself. Above all, you need to be a good person and only then you will succeed as a player. Because ultimately your personality reflects on your game. It is not necessary to think about what happens to you, in terms of failures, but the aim should be to not lose hope and learn from their failures or mistakes. There's no end to learning. Never! However, can you think of one such name in Indian sports? Well, Dinesh Patel is one such gutsy sportsman to have switched from being a javelin thrower to turning into a baseball player. The 32-year-old is a rarity in Indian sports in every sense. Being a javelin thrower, he delved into uncharted territory and took up baseball, a sport of which not many Indians can boost of or enjoy the bragging rights. Taking up the sport to improve his financial situation, Dinesh has come a long way and remains the torch-bearer of baseball in India. He competed in the Indian reality show "Million Dollar Arm" in 2008, having never picked up a baseball before, and emerged on top of over 37,000 competitors in the above-mentioned reality show; designed to find new baseball talents. In addition, Dinesh reached 90 mph during a tryout, intriguing the Pittsburgh Pirates, who acquired the services of Rinku Singh and him. They are, thus, the first players from India to sign deals in Organized Baseball. Note: Rinku Singh is the first Indian to play baseball and now is a professional wrestler. Excerpts: You are a rarity in all sense. A baseball player from India, having competed in Indian reality show "Million Dollar Arm" after never having picked up a baseball before, how has the journey unfolded? Define your love for the sport. Actually, I was a javelin thrower when I got to know about the contest, i.e. Million Dollar Arm. We participated only for the money, to be honest, and then Rinku (Singh) and I took part in it and, thus, I came into baseball. We were in the United States for three years where we played and learned about the game. I know it is tough to switch from one sport to another but I went with my instincts. Back then, I had played nationals in javelin. Had I represented in the Olympics, it might have helped me financially but that didn't happen. So I decided to switch from javelin to baseball. The contest, thus, came as a blessing in disguise. Baseball isn't a talked-about game in the country. Even we didn't know about it before taking it up as a professional. However, I've seen changes taking place in many parts (in India). People have started playing baseball in Bengaluru, Delhi and even in Madhya Pradesh. Nonetheless, any new game takes time to spread like wildfire across the country. This popularity can be achieved through MLB. I can feel that it will sow the seeds for baseball's popularity. Much like how IPL has done wonders and helped cricket flourish even further since 2008. Note: Major League Baseball is a professional baseball organization. In addition, it is the oldest major professional sports league in the world. What does Dinesh Patel want to achieve after his end of career in baseball? Any set target or will you be content in widening the reach of the sport among the countrymen? In Asia, MLB has an office in China. Similarly, MLB has also opened (an office) in India. It will help the game grow and spread out in various parts. This is just a start but surely a promising one. In our nation, baseball is obviously far from being developed. Whatever MLB is doing, the good players will be identified and they can hone their skills by going to the US and train extensively. MLB, in association with India on Track (IOT) and the Amateur Baseball Federation of India (ABFI) conducted online interactive coaching sessions to over 75 participants on Saturday&nbsp;and Sunday. 
 
The Head of Baseball Development, MLB India – David Palese, is currently conducting on-field coaching clinics with three IOT-MLB coaches from Bengaluru on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays preparing them for the weekend sessions that are broadcasted online. During the weekend, different elements of baseball such as pitching, hitting, fitness/agility and defense by position are covered. These online sessions create opportunities for participants to see how fault analysis can be done and provides an interactive opportunity from the comfort of their homes across the nation. 
 
“The online coaching and training lessons have helped the coaches in India to continue learning new aspects of baseball from their homes. The coaches have been able to enhance their knowledge about baseball and be able to implement newly acquired skills and drills to their players and teams in their home towns”&nbsp;said David Palese.

Baseball is one of several sports seeking a slice of the huge Indian market and its similarity with cricket, often called a religion in the country of 1.4 billion, could give it a head start, Major League Baseball (MLB) officials hope.

MLB spent a decade and half studying the market before opening a sixth international office in New Delhi last year and was encouraged by the throwing, hitting and catching techniques that link America’s pastime and India’s obsession.

“Cricket is such a big sport here. So catching, throwing and swing of the bat come very naturally,” Ryo Takahashi, who heads MLB’s business and commercial operations in India, told Reuters.

“The sheer size of this country, the population — to be able to hook India to baseball, that definitely boosts the sport worldwide.”

Takahashi, perhaps wisely, said the plan was not to try to supplant cricket in India.

“We’re not trying to bring baseball as an alternative, or as a replacement, by any means,” he said.

“Anything new, whether it’s music or restaurants, it’s exciting. So new sport is something that might resonate.

“Within that, if there’s some sort of familiarity, it’s easier for people to relate. I think it’s a good mix, it’s a perfect mix.”

The National Basketball Association (NBA), which opened an office in India in 2011, staged two pre-season games in Mumbai in October last year.

MLB, which has previously played games in Mexico, Japan and Australia, made a foray into Europe last year when the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox took their rivalry to London.

Takahashi said it would be premature to do something similar in India, where MLB has attracted more than 30,000 school students in 320 workshops since opening its office.

“We eventually want to get there. I don’t think the demand is here yet, so it wouldn’t make sense to suddenly do that,” he said.

The league also plans to revive ‘Million Dollar Arm’, a contest that began as a reality television show and inspired a 2014 Hollywood movie.

Takahashi said the contest, which drew thousands of aspiring pitchers competing to earn a tryout with a Major League team, would now be an annual affair.

“When it happened, there was a buzz. We plan to do it again ... and make sure we were able to capitalise on that.”

The Indian men’s team played in the Asian Championship in 1987 and 1989 but the country’s Olympic Association only recognised the national amateur baseball federation in 2002.

The long-term goal remained to facilitate Indian representation at the elite level, Takahashi said.

“I think there’s a lot of ways for us to measure success. It could be a situation like Yao Ming for the NBA (in China). It could be TV rating numbers, it could be the national team of India competing in the World Baseball Classic...

“We have the resources, we have the experience and we definitely have the will ... Tough to put a date to it but I think definitely all of it is achievable,” added Takahashi.

"All remaining issues have been resolved and players are reporting to training camps," the union said.

The league proposed a succession of deals that would have seen the players receive only a percentage of their salaries, prorated by number of games played.

Players pushed back against the league proposals, noting that they had already agreed to a pay cut in March and should not be required to accept a further reduction in salary.

The MLBPA had wanted a longer regular season, but when the union rejected the most recent&nbsp;MLB&nbsp;proposal owners voted on Monday to impose a 60-game schedule -- which would still be contingent on reaching agreement with players on health and safety protocols.

To decrease travel, each team will play the majority of its games against its four division rivals, and remaining games against the clubs in the corresponding geographical division in the other league.

Under format, players will receive the full prorated share of their salaries.
