The missile is made by Virginia-based Raytheon Technologies Corp. This weaponry has been in the US arsenal for decades. While the weapons are primarily manufactured for US forces, the missile is also sold in large quantities to a range of American allies.

According to Raytheon, it is currently being sold to 31 foreign military partners, including countries like South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

Though primarily an air-to-air weapon, the latest AIM-9X version can also be used from the ground and against land-based targets. It is widely deployable in a range of modern aircraft including the F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-22 Raptor aircrafts.

This versatility has allowed the missile to break records by helping the advanced F-22 fighter jet score its first air-to-air kill.

US has not revealed the number of missiles it has, but it is believed to be on the higher side as according to Bloomberg, the US Air Force received its 100,000th such missile in 2021.

<h2>What is the cost</h2>

According to Bloomberg, the US Department of Defence is looking to purchase 255 such missiles for $111.9 million for the 2023 financial year. Which means that a missile costs about $439,000 each.

However, some countries have purchased in significant discounts while other countries usually pay for associated equipment, parts and training costs as well.

For example, Malaysia sought to procure just 20 AIM-9X-2 missiles for $52 million in 2011, after including such secondary costs.

<h2>How do they work?</h2>

The AIM-9X Sidewinder is a supersonic, heat-seeking, short-range missile. Among the main components are: an infrared homing guidance section, an active optical target detector, a high-explosive warhead and a rocket motor.

With the help of the infrared guiding system, the missile has the capability to lock in on targets in a range of settings at any time of the day.

Weighing around 186-pound (84 kg), this killing missile is powered by solid fuel, and it has a length of 9.9 feet (3 meters).

Raytheon Technologies Corp has also released a so-called Block II variant of the missile with enhanced features, including a lock-on-after-launch capability so the pilot shooting the device does not have to rely on just visual aiming.

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has made some chilling revelations in a latest BBC Documentary, Putin vs the West, where he claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had threatened him with a missile strike ahead of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February.&nbsp;

However, the then PM added, "I think from the very relaxed tone that he was taking, the sort of air of detachment that he seemed to have, he was just playing along with my attempts to get him to negotiate." In a recent interview, Ukraine’s presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said that Kyiv and its Western allies are in the midst of negotiating for long-range missiles and fighter jets to push back Russian forces. The top aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke about how their Western allies have been “conservative” about arms deliveries as they fear changes in the “international architecture”&nbsp;amid the ongoing conflict, reported the Associated Press. &nbsp;

“To drastically reduce the Russian army’s key weapon — the artillery they use today on the front lines — we need missiles that will destroy their depots,”&nbsp;said Podolyak to the country’s Freedom channel, as per Reuters. This comes after Washington and Berlin along with several other European countries announced that they would send their advanced battle tanks, German-made Leopard 2 tanks and US-made M1 Abrams to Ukraine.

In reference to Russia’s weapon depots, the Ukrainian top aide claimed that there were more than 100 artillery warehouses in the Moscow-occupied Crimean Peninsula. “We need to work with this. We must show (our partners) the real picture of this war,”&nbsp;said the Ukrainian official, without mentioning any particular countries.&nbsp;

On the other hand, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, last week in an interview said that the country has “ruled out” the idea of sending jets to Ukraine as they are “much more complex systems” compared to tanks and the decision would lead the country to “venture into dimensions that I would currently warn against”, reported Reuters. &nbsp;

Kyiv in talks with Western allies for long-range missiles, fighter jets: Ukrainian official

Signifying the ever-growing defence and diplomatic ties between India and Israel, the CEO of Israeli Defence firm Rafael Advanced Systems said that their vision didn't stop with making missiles in India, but was also keen on exporting made-in-India missiles. Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS), a joint venture between Rafael and India's Kalyani, assemble kits for the Indo-Israeli Medium Range Surface to Air Missile(MRSAM).&nbsp;

Operated by the Indian Army and the Air Force, the MRSAM missile can take down multiple aerial targets such as jets, drones, helicopters, and incoming missiles, within a 70km range. The missile kit or mid-section refers to the frontal end of the missile, which comprises the seeker and crucial electronics.

Speaking at the event,&nbsp;Maj Gen(Retd)Yoav Har-Even,&nbsp;President &amp; CEO, of Rafael Advanced Systems said that their firm had been offering a variety of services in India, for more than 25 years. He said that Rafael has been collaborating and working with the Indian Defence Research Development Organization(DRDO) and Government-run defence firms.&nbsp;

Sharing the vision about future milestones for the KRAS joint venture, he said that they hoped to deliver the 1000th MRSAM midsection and the 500th Spike Anti-Tank Guided missile. He added that the strategic relationship between Israel and India has now shifted their firm's focus towards India.

We are in touch and tandem with the DRDO in technology development" said Baba Kalyani, Chairman &amp; Managing Director, of Bharat Forge Limited. He added that the Kalyani group had a large capability in artillery, ammunition, armoured vehicles, small arms and electronics.&nbsp;

He said that the Kalyani group was the first private firm in India to be given the order to export artillery guns(155mm) out of India. With more such export orders, he expressed optimism about the Indian defence industry being able to even surpass the export estimate that has been stated by the Government of India.

The missile kit or mid-section refers to the frontal end of the missile, which comprises the seeker and crucial electronics. He said that Rafael has been collaborating and working with the Indian Defence Research Development Organization(DRDO) and Government-run defence firms. Sharing the vision about future milestones for the KRAS joint venture, he said that they hoped to deliver the 1000th MRSAM midsection and the 500th Spike Anti-Tank Guided missile. He added that the strategic relationship between Israel and India has now shifted their firm's focus towards India. We are in touch and tandem with the DRDO in technology development" said Baba Kalyani, Chairman & Managing Director, of Bharat Forge Limited. He added that the Kalyani group had a large capability in artillery, ammunition, armoured vehicles, small arms and electronics. He said that the Kalyani group was the first private firm in India to be given the order to export artillery guns(155mm) out of India. With more such export orders, he expressed optimism about the Indian defence industry being able to even surpass the export estimate that has been stated by the Government of India.

This military&nbsp;exercise saw for the first time the strategic&nbsp;B-1B bomber plane being deployed in US-South Korea drills since 2017.

Pyongyang on Friday demanded the United States and South Korea halt "provocative" air exercises. Earlier, South Korea said it scrambled warplanes in response to 180 North Korean military flights near the countries' shared border on Friday.
