China has stated that its recent series of military drills near Taiwan is aimed at countering what it views as the "arrogance" of separatist forces advocating for Taiwan's independence.

These exercises have raised concerns about potential conflicts and have been met with strong opposition from Taiwan, reported Reuters.

In response to China's military activities, Taiwan has reported a surge in fighter jets, drones, bombers, warships, and even the presence of the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong operating near its territory.

This escalation in military activities poses a risk of unintended clashes, prompting warnings from Taiwan's defence minister.

China's perspective

China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokeswoman, Zhu Fenglian, addressed these drills during a Beijing news briefing. She emphasised that the drills are meant to counter the efforts of Taiwan independence separatist forces and their actions promoting independence.

Zhu asserted that the People's Liberation Army's actions to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity are ongoing and called for people in Taiwan to oppose independence and collaborate with China to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Front-runner for Taiwan's presidency

William Lai, the leading candidate for Taiwan's presidency, accused China of attempting to annex the island. Lai, who previously voiced support for independence, clarified that he does not seek to alter the status quo and has extended an offer for talks with Beijing. His candidacy has drawn particular ire from China due to his past pro-independence remarks.

Notably, China's armed forces have refrained from explicitly commenting on these drills. Simultaneously, there are reports that Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu has gone missing from the public eye amid allegations of corruption. This situation further adds intrigue to China's military activities in the region.

Taiwan's democratically elected government maintains that only the people of Taiwan can determine their future, and it has consistently offered talks with China, which Beijing has consistently rejected. The situation has worsened as Taiwan reported 16 Chinese aircraft entering its air defence identification zone, with 12 crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait. This line previously served as an unofficial boundary until China started regularly crossing it in August of the previous year.

Taiwan is set to launch the first of eight domestically produced submarines as it bolsters its defences against China. Beijing sees such efforts by Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party as provocative and potentially dangerous, pushing the Taiwanese people into a precarious situation.

North Korean hackers target US-South Korea military drills, police say

An angry response from Beijing was anticipated following a recent trip by Taiwan's Vice President William Lai to the United States. Beijing has already started military drills surrounding Taiwan, claiming that the exercises are a "stern warning" to separatist groups on the island state.

China launches military drills in ‘stern warning’ to Taiwan after Lai's US visit

China and Russia conducted a record number of military drills last year when compared to the past two decades or so, said a report by Bloomberg. China’s defence ministry, on Sunday (July 16) also announced another joint air and sea drill in the Sea of Japan with Russia which is said to be aimed at “safeguarding the security of strategic waterways.”

Record-high number of military drills

A report by Bloomberg, citing data compiled by the United States National Defense University’s Center for the Study of Chinese Military Affairs, said that Beijing and Moscow conducted six joint military exercises together, in 2022.

The number was a record high for military exercises and accounted for two-thirds of all of China’s drills with foreign militaries, with data going back 20 years, said the report. Out of the six exercises, five took place after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This comes as Washington has warned Beijing against supplying arms to Moscow but China has become an economic and diplomatic shelter for Russia which is facing thousands of sanctions since the beginning of the conflict.

While the two countries’ defence history has been marred by suspicion following a months-long conflict along their border in the late 1960s, the trust between Moscow and Beijing is relatively new. Reportedly, it was until 2015 that the Russia-China ties strengthened after the US and Europe imposed sanctions against Moscow for annexing Crimea, the year prior.

According to an NDU and a Bloomberg News tally, Russia and China have conducted at least 36 drills together since Moscow seized Crimea when compared to just 10 exercises recorded before 2014. The report also noted that while these drills are on a relatively smaller scale than those conducted by the US and its allies, they are politically significant.

“These exercises will become more frequent, more kind of politically charged and have a lot of like political signaling value,” said Andrew Taffer, a research fellow at the NDU, as quoted by Bloomberg. He added, “It suggests the possibility they might work together in ways that the US and its allies find unpalatable, if not offensive.”

It is also worth noting that days before Russia began its “special military operation” in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping declared a “no limits” partnership. One notable area of that partnership is said to be military cooperation.

Upcoming ‘Northern/Interaction-2023’ drills

China’s defence ministry, on Sunday, said that they sent a Chinese naval flotilla which comprises five warships and four ship-borne helicopters which will rendezvous with Russian forces in a “predetermined area”.

This comes a day after the Chinese defence ministry said it would conduct military drills with Russian naval and air forces which will take place in the Sea of Japan. Meanwhile, two Russian warships – Gromkiy and Sovershenniy – are taking part in the Sea of Japan drill.

It will be the first time that both Russian forces take part in the drill, reported the state newspaper Global Times.

The drills codenamed “Northern/Interaction-2023” will be organised by the People’s Liberation Army’s Northern Theatre Command, said the ministry, on Saturday, without giving any date on which they will be conducted.

China, Russia conducted record-high number of military drills in 2022: Report

Tensions between China and Taiwan are no recent news. The two have been at loggerheads over the latter's Democratic status for a while now. China seeks to bring Taiwan under its control and the island country has left no stone unturned in asserting its military might to remain an independent region. These are visuals of Taiwan's battle preparedness. Take a look.

Simmering tensions between China and Taiwan

Three Chinese ships, including the aircraft carrier Shandong, crossed the Taiwan Strait on Saturday, stated the island's Ministry of National Defence.

"A (People's Liberation Army Navy) flotilla of three ships, led by the Shangdong aircraft carrier, passed through the Taiwan Strait around noon today... to the west of the median line, heading northward," the ministry said in a statement while speaking about the unofficial border in the middle of the strait.

The allegations are the latest uptick in the escalating military tensions over the island which Beijing claims as its own territory.

The ministry stated that the Shandong, which was commissioned in 2019, sailed around midday in a northerly direction through the strait sticking to its median line, which marks the unofficial barrier between the two countries.

The military of Taiwan closely monitored the group, which was using its own aircraft and ships, and "responded appropriately", said the ministry in a short statement.

Taiwan's armed forces "have monitored the situation and tasked (civil air patrol) aircraft, navy vessels, and land-based missile systems to respond to these activities," the ministry stated.

The defence ministry of China did not respond to the allegations and the armed forces of the country did not mention about any sailing on their official social media channels.

Last month, the Shandong participated in the Chinese military drills around Taiwan, operating in the western Pacific. In March 2022, the Shandong sailed across Taiwan Strait, just hours before the US and Chinese presidents were due to talk.

China's military activities have continued on a smaller scale around Taiwan after its war games formally ended last month.

On Saturday, Taiwan's defence ministry had stated that eight Chinese fighter jets had passed through the strait's median line in a time span of 24 hours, something that the Chinese warplanes have been doing regularly since they held their earlier war games last August.

Last month, the Shandong participated in the Chinese military drills around Taiwan, operating in the western Pacific. Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong, two other ships sail through Taiwan Strait: Report

Taiwan claimed that China appears to have changed its plan of declaring a three-day no-fly zone in airspace near the north of Taiwan next week, decreasing the duration of the no-fly zone to just 27 minutes.

Taiwan’s defence ministry spokesperson, while addressing a press conference, said that the no-fly zone is at a distance of 85 nautical miles north of Taiwan.

The spokesperson said that China may be declaring a no-fly zone to conduct aerospace activities, like satellite launches.

As per Reuters, a Chinese official claimed that the air traffic would be significantly affected by the flight ban, disturbing the route of 60 to 70 per cent of flights flying between north-east and south-east Asia, along with flights which will be connecting Taiwan and South Korea, Japan and North America.

Later, Taiwan’s transport ministry claimed that China would confine the no-fly zone to a short period on Sunday after Taipei raised objections over its plans.

Originally, it was claimed that China will be declaring the no-fly zone from April 16 to 18.

On Monday, China announced the end of three-day military drills, which started as a retaliation to the meeting of Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in the United States.

On Wednesday, Tsai said that her official trip to the United States showed Taiwan's commitment to defend its democracy, as the country's military plans to begin its own drills.

Tsai said that it is important for democracies to remain united while faced with “continued authoritarian expansionism.”

“Through this trip we again sent a message to the international community that Taiwan is determined to safeguard freedom and democracy which won acknowledgement and support from our democratic partners,” she said while speaking to visiting Canadian lawmakers at her office in Taipei.

As per reports, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is still carrying out military activity around Taiwan even after it formally announced an end to the military drills which continued from Saturday to Monday.

Hours after concluding its three-day military drills on the Taiwan Straits, the Chinese military posted a simulation video showing how it could launch a full-scale attack against the self-ruled nation if war ever breaks out.

The clip was reposted on Twitter by state-run outlet Global Times on Sunday, after the military’s Eastern Theatre Command shared the animated video on its official WeChat account—the Chinese social media account.

Chinese military releases simulation clip of how it will attack Taiwan if war breaks out. Watch

China's military has said that it has successfully completed war games that simulated "sealing off" Taiwan. Russia has come out in support of Beijing and said that China has every right to carry out military drills around Taiwan.

China wraps up military exercises around Taiwan

China announced the completion of military drills around Taiwan on Monday, after carrying them out for three days, stating that the integrated military capabilities were tested by them under actual combat conditions as they practised precision strikes and “sealed off” the island that is viewed by Beijing as its own.

The drills, dubbed as "Joint Sword", were announced by Beijing on Saturday, after Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen landed back in Taipei following his meeting with US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles.

The use of force was never renounced by China to bring Taiwan, which is democratically governed, under the control of Beijing. The claims of China have been strongly disputed by Taiwan's government and the latter also denounced the drills.

The Chinese military stated that it had "successfully completed" the exercises and "comprehensively tested" the capabilities of various units amid actual combat conditions.

"The troops in the theatre are ready to fight all the time and can fight at any time, resolutely crushing any form of Taiwan independence separatism and foreign interference," said the Eastern Theatre Command of the People's Liberation Army, in a statement.

Earlier on Monday, Chinese state television said that drills were staged by the aircraft, which included the nuclear-capable H-6 bombers armed with live missiles and warships, to "form a multi-directional island-encompassing blockade situation".

The Eastern Theatre Command stated that the Shandong aircraft carrier also participated in combat patrols, and the fighters were seen taking off from its deck.

Since last week, Taiwan was tracking the Shandong in the Pacific Ocean.

A map was published by Taiwan's defence ministry on Monday of the Chinese air force activities that took place in the last 24 hours which showed four carrier-based Chinese J-15 fighters were operating over the Pacific Ocean to the east of Taiwan.

The defence ministry said that on the last day, 12 Chinese warships and 91 military jets were spotted around Taiwan, and the drills were being conducted by the Shandong carrier group in the Western Pacific.

Extending its support to China's military drills, the Kremlin on Monday stated that Beijing had a "sovereign right" to respond to what was called "provocative acts" by Moscow.

"China has the sovereign right to respond to these provocative acts, including with military manoeuvres, in strict accordance with international law,” he added.

Meanwhile, the United States which has continuously appealed to China to show restraint sent the USS Milius guided-missile destroyer on Monday through South China Sea's contested part.
