US President Donald on Saturday threatened to shut down the federal government in September if Congress did not provide more funding to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

"That wall has started, we have 1.6 billion (dollars)," Trump said at a campaign rally in Washington, Michigan.

"We come up again on September 28th and if we don't get border security we will have no choice, we will close down the country because we need border security."

Trump made a similar threat in March to push for changes in immigration law that he says would prevent criminals from entering the country. The government briefly shut down in January over immigration.

A $1.3 trillion spending bill, which Trump signed last month, will keep the government funded through the end of September. A government shutdown ahead of the November mid-elections is unlikely to be supported by his fellow Republicans who are keen to keep control of the US&nbsp;Congress.

Trump cited the hundreds of Central American migrants travelling in a "caravan" as one of the reasons for strong border security.

"Watch the caravan, watch how sad and terrible it is, including for those people and the crime that they inflict on themselves and that others inflict on them," said Trump.

"It's a horrible dangerous journey for them and they come up because they know once they can get here they can walk right into our country."

Migrants, who include women and children, have said they fled their homes in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras because of death threats from gangs, the murder of family members or political persecution.

Trump snubs White House correspondents dinner yet again

Michigan&#39;s attorney general promised Saturday a &quot;full and complete investigation&quot; into how ex-USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar got away with abusing young women over the two decades he worked at a university.

The university fired Nassar in September of 2016, after allegations of abuse became public.

MSU&#39;s student newspaper on Thursday called for more accountability.

The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed it was not a meteorological event but more likely a meteor.

Two bailiffs were shot dead during a scuffle with a prisoner-turned-gunman inside a southwest Michigan courthouse yesterday that also wounded two people before police officers killed the shooter, a county sheriff said. 
 
Larry Darnell Gordon, 44, fatally shot bailiffs identified as Joseph Zangaro, a retired Michigan state police lieutenant, and Ron Kienzle, a retired Benton Township police sergeant, the Detroit Free Press newspaper reported. 
 
The shootings of the bailiffs and the deputy came four days after four Dallas police officers and a Dallas transit police officer were killed by a sniper who claimed to be motivated by the use of lethal force by police against African-Americans. 
 
Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey told a news conference that the shooting took place at about 2:25 pm local time on the third floor of the St. Joseph, Michigan, courthouse. 
 
Bailey said Gordon was a prisoner who took a gun from one of two bailiffs escorting him to a courtroom and then began shooting as he tried to escape from custody. A sheriff&#39;s deputy and civilian were also wounded, he said. 
 
&quot;Our hearts are torn apart. They were our friends,&quot; Bailey told reporters. &quot;It&#39;s a sad day.&quot; 
 
Bailey said the deputy and civilian who were shot were taken to hospital and were expected to survive. 
 
The suspect was shot and killed by police officers, he said. 
 
Chris Gautz, public information officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections, said on Twitter all Department of Corrections staff were safe and accounted for. 
 
A witness, Gretta Volkenstein, told CNN that buildings and government agencies in the area were placed on lockdown as the incident unfolded. 
 
It was not immediately known why the prisoner was being escorted to the courtroom but Bailey said that was being investigated. 
 
&quot;MSP (Michigan State Police) has secured the scene at the Berrien County courthouse and started its investigation into the shooting that occurred this afternoon,&quot; Governor Rick Snyder said on Twitter. 
 
Bailey said the courthouse would be closed on Tuesday.
