Lauren Shapiro, a ceramics artist who collaborated with a friend and oceanic researchers, worked with more than 100 socially distanced volunteers to build a massive installation of monolithic blocks veneered with clay imprints of dead coral. 
The piece, called Future Pacific, is a meditation on the increasing fragility and disappearance of coral reef ecosystems. 
 
The unfired clay will be destroyed after the four-month exhibit, reflecting hundreds of thousands of years of life and growth lost as reefs around the globe die out. 
 
"We knew we were going to do it during art week so we were very excited about the prospect of having international exposure ... and as it got closer to the date and Basel finally cancelled it was a bit disappointing," Shapiro said. 
However, Shapiro was able to make one-on-one appointments to view the installation. 
 
"I was able to bring a lot of curators, collectors, and just people that were interested in the work to give them personal tours through the exhibit and connect with them on a more personal level." Oil painter Thomas Bills echoed a similar sentiment. 
 
"I`m a little disappointed I don`t get to see my favourite national, international artists, but what I am seeing instead is watching a lot of my friends and colleagues doing much larger projects and sort of flourishing," said Bils.

The explosion sent debris flying across the parking lot of the Fountain Plaza shopping centre, damaging an LA Fitness gym, numerous cars and blowing holes in neighbouring buildings in the city of Plantation, about 50 kilometres north of Miami.

"We got our workout in, picked up the kids, walked out, got in the car, drove away and as we drove away everything exploded. It was a pretty crazy scene," said Jessi Walasheck, who witnessed the explosion.

Deputy fire chief Joel Gordon told reporters two of the injured were in serious condition after the blast, one of whom had potentially life-threatening injuries.

"We found patients scattered all around the debris area," he said, but added the injuries generally "are not as severe as what we thought they would be."

His department initially called it a gas explosion and Gordon said ruptured gas lines were found in the debris, but the cause of the blast has not been confirmed.

No one has been reported missing.

"As bad it was, it could have been a lot worse," he said.

Roughly 2,000 minors between the ages of 13 and 17 were in the Homestead centre as of March 30, according to information from the US Department of Health and Human Services.

The site is now in the process of adding enough beds to accommodate 3,200 people.

Participants in Sunday's demonstration complained that Caliburn is making "millions of dollars every day" from its contract with the federal government.

"Children don't come out because they lose money," Martinez said.

The activists also pointed out that members of the US Congress have been barred from entering the facility to appraise conditions.

The centre sits on federally owned land next to an Air Reserve base. CBS News has reported that it is the only child detention site in the country that does not undergo regular inspections by state authorities.

Protesters demand closure of largest detention centre for migrants in Florida

World number one Novak Djokovic staved off a spirited challenge from Federico Delbonis for a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 win in the third round of the Miami Open on Sunday.

Like Roger Federer the previous day, top seed Djokovic found it tough going against an unseeded opponent before prevailing in two hours in the Florida twilight.

Eighty-third ranked Delbonis, a left-hander with perhaps the highest ball toss in the game, took advantage of some Djokovic errors in the second set.

"I managed to really play well last couple games of first set, put myself in front, then I played a couple of really bad service games," Djokovic told reporters.

"Credit to Federico, he stepped in. He was the one controlling the pace. I backed up. I didn't have that much depth and power in my shots, and he used it.

"I think first two, three games of the third set were crucial. (I was) really fighting, trying to be present, regain the positioning on the court more than anything."

The result improved Djokovic's impressive record against Argentine players. According to the ATP Tour, since 2007 only Juan Martin del Potro has beaten Djokovic, who is 36-3 against Argentines during the period.

Next up for the Serb is Spanish 22nd seed Roberto Bautista Agut, who prevailed 6-4, 6-4 over Italian 15th seed Fabio Fognini.

The deal included hosting one regular season Spanish league game on American soil per season – with Girona's home match against Catalan neighbours Barcelona earmarked to be played on Jan. 26 at the home of the NFL's Miami Dolphins.

The proposal received opposition from the Spanish FA and soccer's world and European governing bodies, UEFA and FIFA, and it now appears that Barca’s support is also wavering whilst the various parties involved cannot reach an agreement.

“The FC Barcelona Board of Directors have agreed to withdraw their willingness to play against Girona in Miami after seeing the lack of consensus surrounding the proposal,” read a club statement.

“Barcelona were and are willing to go to Miami in order to play a La Liga game, and accepted that the profits would be shared amongst all clubs in the first and second divisions, in alignment with the TV rights deal, but considers that while all the parties involved cannot reach an agreement, this project cannot thrive.”

A source close to the negotiations downplayed the setback, telling Reuters that holding the match next month was probably too aggressive a timeline and adding that it was likely to be played sometime next year.

The operation has shifted from rescue to body recovery, with engineers fearing the support structures at either end of the bridge could also come down, Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta told reporters.

&quot;The entire bridge is in jeopardy,&quot; he said.

The walkway, which connects Florida International University to a student housing area, went up less than a week ago but was not yet operational.

Ten people were taken to hospital, Zabaleta said, with emergency crews working all through the night at the scene.

Video footage on CNN shows the concrete structure suddenly crashing onto the road below.

At least eight cars were trapped when the 950-ton (tonne) bridge suddenly gave way on Thursday, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division Chief Paul Estopinan said earlier.

Police detective Juan Carlos Llera said when the bridge came down, it &quot;sounded like an explosion. A huge bang.&quot; &quot;It looks like a disaster area. It looks literally like a bomb went off,&quot; Llera told AFP.

The bridge was suspended from cables which had come loose and while they were being tightened, the whole thing collapsed, Florida Senator Marco Rubio wrote on Twitter.

The bridge had only been installed on Saturday, ahead of its planned opening in 2019.

Another shaken driver, Lynnell Collins, told CNN he was about to make a right turn when "the whole thing really just came down." "I got out of my car and me and a few other people were sprinting over there. We started helping people whose cars were at least half crushed and whoever was easily saved." He said he saw two trucks that were completely crushed. The university had only recently been celebrating the construction of the bridge across a busy and dangerous section of highway that students said had been the scene of accidents. It had been erected using an accelerated modular building method that enabled it to go up in the space of a day. "We are stunned by today's tragic collapse of a pedestrian bridge," said FIGG Engineering Group, one of the partners involved in the walkway's construction. Roger Federer survived a brave challenge from American qualifier Frances Tiafoe before emerging with a 7-6 (7/2) 6-3 victory as he got his Miami Open title bid underway on Saturday.&nbsp;

Tiafoe, ranked 101st in the world, struggled against Federer&#39;s serve but was strong on his own and forced a first set tie-break in which the Swiss came out on top.

To the cries of "Cuba Libre!" and "Freedom! Freedom!" Cuban-Americans poured into the streets of Miami early Saturday to celebrate the death of their nemesis Fidel Castro. Revelers, many of whom were exiled by Cuba’s communist regime, honked car horns, banged on pots and drums, and danced, cried, and waved Cuban flags in a wave of communal euphoria. Castro died late Friday in Havana, Cuban President Raul Castro announced on national television around midnight local time. While news was just getting around in Cuba, in Miami, home to the largest concentration of Cuban-Americans in the United States, the news spread like wildfire. "It’s sad that one finds joy in the death of a person,but that person should never have been born," said Pablo Arencibia, 67, a teacher who fled Cuba 20 years ago. "Satan is now the one who has to worry," because "Fidel is heading there and is going to try to get his job," joked Arecibia, who could barely be heard over the din of honking horns and banging pots. Thick crowds poured into the streets of Little Havana and Hialeah -- the Miami neighborhoods where many Cuban exiles settled -- to dance, hug, and exchange comments like "it took so long," and "now only Raul is missing." Some sang the Cuban national anthem. United States health authorities Wednesday launched the second human trial of a vaccine against the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which can cause birth defects and is now spreading in the US and Latin America. 
 
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Zika virus investigational DNA vaccine will be given to 80 healthy volunteers aged 18-35 at three study sites in the United States, said the federal agency. 
 
The first dose was delivered Tuesday, the NIAID said in a statement. 
 
&quot;A safe and effective vaccine to prevent Zika virus infection and the devastating birth defects it causes is a public health imperative,&quot; said NIAID director Anthony S Fauci. 
 
&quot;Results in animal testing have been very encouraging. We are pleased that we are now able to proceed with this initial study in people.&quot; 
 
Fauci, who has previously warned that any vaccine against Zika would take years to develop, described the trial&#39;s launch as &quot;an important step forward.&quot; 
 
The drug is a DNA vaccine that is similar to another experimental vaccine developed by NIAID against West Nile virus. 
 
It cannot infect people with Zika, but is designed to make the body mount an immune response to Zika. 
 
DNA vaccines &quot;have been shown to be safe in previous clinical trials for other diseases,&quot; the NIAID statement said. 
 
The first Zika vaccine trial got under way last month. 
 
Led by Pennsylvania-based Inovio Pharmaceuticals, the phase 1 trial using a Zika DNA vaccine called GLS-5700 is being conducted in Quebec City, Canada, as well as Miami and Philadelphia. 
 
Active transmission 
 
The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention say more than 50 countries and territories, mainly in Latin America and the Caribbean, currently have active transmission of Zika virus. 
 
The United States last month announced its first locally transmitted cases of Zika in Miami, with more than a dozen infections among non-travelers. 
 
The CDC has issued a travel warning for a square-mile area where the Zika-infected mosquitoes are believed to be lurking. 
 
There is no cure for Zika. In four out of five cases, it causes no symptoms. People who do feel sick from it may experience a rash, joint pain or eye infection. 
 
However, in pregnant women Zika can cause permanent damage to the developing fetus, including microcephaly, a condition in which the infant&#39;s skull and brain are unusually small. 
 
Women who are pregnant or want to become pregnant are urged to avoid areas where Zika is circulating, and take steps to prevent mosquito bites. 
 
Barrier methods of contraception are also recommended, since the virus can be spread by sexual contact. 
 
Initial results from the NIAID vaccine trial are expected in January 2017. If it appears safe, a phase 2 trial in Zika-endemic countries could begin soon after. 
 
A study out last month in the journal Science projected that the Zika pandemic would fizzle out in the next two to three years.
