"We will destroy radical Islamic terrorism," US President Donald Trump made his agenda clear while delivering the joint press statement at the White House in Washington DC today with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both the leaders affirmed their commitment to fighting terror in their societies.

PM Narendra Modi told the gathered media that terrorism and extremism were on top of the agenda for the meeting between him and US President Trump and the two administrations. The two leaders made the statement in the Rose Garden on a sunny day with US First Lady Melania Trump present dressed in a yellow ensemble.

"Fighting terror and destroying terror safe havens is our common goal. We will increase intelligence sharing on terror," PM Modi said in his address.

"The protection of our societies is the topmost priority for me and President Trump. The common empowerment of the two biggest democracies in the world is our focus," he added.

On his part, President Trump stressed the common link of democracy between the American and Indian people.

"Both the Indian and American Constitution begin with three beautiful words - "We the people".

Regional crises also figured between the two leaders with the instability in Afghanistan and Indo-Pacific region being the prominent points of concern.

President Trump also lauded the tax overhaul to be undertaken by the Indian government and the economic growth rate of India.

"In two weeks, you are going to begin one of the largest tax overhaul in your country's history. We are also doing this by the way," Trump said to Modi as a part of his address.

On the trade between the two countries, Trump said that it is important that the barriers be removed for the export of US goods to India.

"It is important that barriers be removed to the export of U.S. goods into your markets and that we reduce our trade deficit with your country," he said.

President Trump also highlighted India's contribution to the American economy by mentioning an Indian Airlines order for 100 aircraft that he said will generate "many American jobs".

President Trump further welcomed further India's contribution to promoting democracy and security in Afghanistan.

Both leaders committed to continue close consultations and cooperation in support of Afghanistan’s future.

Trump brought a touch of humour and informality to the normally dry official proceeding with several off-the-cuff remarks. "PM Modi and I are world leaders in social media," Trump said to laughter, even as he explained that this gave "citizens of our countries the opportunity to hear directly from the elected officials".

President Trump also informed the media that PM Modi had invited his daughter Ivanka Trump to lead the American delegation to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit to be held in India. "And I believe she has accepted," he added.

The full text of their speeches, published by the White House, is reproduced below:

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Thank you very much. Prime Minister Modi, thank you for being here with us today. It’s a great honor to welcome the leader of the world’s largest democracy to the White House.

I have always had a deep admiration for your country and for its people, and a profound appreciation for your rich culture, heritage and traditions. This summer, India will celebrate the 70th anniversary of its independence, and on behalf of the United States, I want to congratulate the Indian people on this magnificent milestone in the life of your very, very incredible nation.

During my campaign, I pledged that if elected, India would have a true friend in the White House. And that is now exactly what you have -- a true friend. The friendship between the United States and India is built on shared values, including our shared commitment to democracy. Not many people know it, but both American and the Indian constitutions begin with the same three very beautiful words: We the people.

The Prime Minister and I both understand the crucial importance of those words, which helps to form the foundation of cooperation between our two countries. Relations between countries are strongest when they are devoted to the interests of the people we serve. And after our meetings today, I will say that the relationship between India and the United States has never been stronger, has never been better.

I’m proud to announce to the media, to the American people, and to the Indian people, that Prime Minister Modi and I are world leaders in social media -- (laughter) -- we’re believers -- giving the citizens of our countries the opportunity to hear directly from their elected officials, and for us to hear directly from them. I guess it’s worked very well in both cases.

I am thrilled to salute you, Prime Minister Modi, and the Indian people for all that you are accomplishing together. Your accomplishments have been vast. India has the fastest growing economy in the world. We hope we’re going to be catching you very soon in terms of percentage increase, I have to tell you that. We’re working on it.

In just two weeks, you will begin to implement the largest tax overhaul in your country’s history -- we’re doing that also, by the way -- creating great new opportunities for your citizens. You have a big vision for improving infrastructure, and you are fighting government corruption, which is always a grave threat to democracy.

Together, our countries can help chart an optimistic path into the future, one that unleashes the power of new technology, new infrastructure, and the enthusiasm and excitement of very hardworking and very dynamic people.

I look forward to working with you, Mr. Prime Minister, to create jobs in our countries, to grow our economies, and to create a trading relationship that is fair and reciprocal. It is important that barriers be removed to the export of U.S. goods into your markets, and that we reduce our trade deficit with your country.

I was pleased to learn about an Indian Airlines recent order of 100 new American planes, one of the largest orders of its kind, which will support thousands and thousands of American jobs. We’re also looking forward to exporting more American energy to India as your economy grows, including major long-term contracts to purchase American natural gas, which are right now being negotiated, and we will sign them. Trying to get the price up a little bit.

To further our economic partnership, I’m excited to report that the Prime Minister has invited my daughter, Ivanka, to lead the U.S. delegation to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in India this fall. And I believe she has accepted.

Finally, the security partnership between the United States and India is incredibly important. Both our nations have been struck by the evils of terrorism, and we are both determined to destroy terrorist organizations and the radical ideology that drives them. We will destroy radical Islamic terrorism. Our militaries are working every day to enhance cooperation between our military forces. And next month, they will join together with the Japanese navy to take place in the largest maritime exercise ever conducted in the vast Indian Ocean.

I also thank the Indian people for their contributions to the effort in Afghanistan, and for joining us in applying new sanctions against the North Korean regime. The North Korean regime is causing tremendous problems and is something that has to be dealt with, and probably dealt with rapidly.

Working together, I truly believe our two countries can set an example for many other nations, make great strides in defeating common threats, and make great progress in unleashing amazing prosperity and growth.

Prime Minister Modi, thank you again for joining me today, and for visiting our country and our wonderful White House and Oval Office. I enjoyed our very productive conversation this afternoon, and look forward to its continuation tonight at dinner. The future of our partnership has never looked brighter. India and the United States will always be tied together in friendship and respect.

Prime Minister Modi, thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. (Applause.)

PRIME MINISTER MODI: (As interpreted.) President Donald Trump and First Lady, Vice President, ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen of the media: Right from the opening tweet to the end of our talks, President Trump's welcome, which was filled with friendliness, his warm welcome to the White House by himself and the First Lady, I would like to thank both of you from the bottom of my heart for this warm welcome.

I would also like to give a special thanks to you, President Trump, for having spent so much time with me, for having spoken such kind words about me and my country. And I would like to tell you that I'm eager to welcome your daughter to India for the Entrepreneurship Summit.

President Trump, I'd once again like to thank you for the time that you have spent with me. I'd like to give you special thanks for that.

My visit and our talks today will mark a very important page in the history of the collaboration and cooperation between our two nations. The talks between his Excellency, President Trump, and myself today have been extremely important from all points of view, for several reasons: Because they were based on mutual trust; because of the convergence and similarities they revealed in our values, and our priorities, and in our concerns and interests; because they focused on the highest levels of achievement in our cooperation, and mutual support, and partnership; because our two countries are global engines of growth; because the all-around or comprehensive economic growth and joint progress of both countries and both societies is the main objective for both the President and myself, and will remain so; because the top priority for both President Trump and myself is to protect our society from global challenges like terrorism; and because our aim is the strengthening of India and the USA -- two great democracies in the world -- friends.

Our robust strategic partnership is such that it touches upon almost all areas of human endeavor. In our conversation today, President Trump and I have discussed all dimensions of India-U.S. relations at length. Both nations are committed to a bilateral architecture that will take our strategic partnership to new heights.

In this relationship, in both countries, increased productivity, growth, job creation, and breakthrough technologies -- an engagement towards all these are, and will remain, strong drivers of our cooperation, and will give further momentum to our relationship.

We consider the USA as our primary partner for India's social and economic transformation in all our flagship programs and schemes. I am sure that the convergence between my vision for a "new India and President Trump's vision for "making America great again" will add new dimensions to our cooperation.

I am very clear about the fact that India's interests lie in a strong, and prosperous, and successful America. In the same way, India's development and its growing role at the international level are in the USA's interest.

One of our common priorities will be the development of trade, commerce, and investment links. And in this regard, in the technology, innovation, and knowledge-economy sectors, the expansion and deepening of cooperation is also among our priorities. Towards this end, we shall take steps to further strengthen our successful digital partnership.

Friends, we are not just partners by chance. We are also partners in dealing with current and future challenges that we may be faced with. Today, during our meeting, we discussed the serious challenges of terrorism, extremism, and radicalization, which are the major challenges facing the world today. And we have agreed to enhance our cooperation in fighting against these scourges. Fighting terrorism and doing away with the safe shelters, sanctuaries, and safe havens will be an important part of our cooperation.

With respect to our common concerns on terrorism, we will also enhance our sharing of intelligence, and exchange information to deepen and expand our policy coordination as far as possible.

We also spoke at length on regional issues. The increasing instability, due to terrorism, in Afghanistan is one of our common concerns. Both India and America have played an important role in rebuilding Afghanistan and ensuring its security. In order to attain our objectives for peace and stability in Afghanistan, we will maintain close consultation and communication with the U.S. to enhance coordination between our two nations.

In the Indo-Pacific region, in order to maintain peace, stability, and prosperity in the region, this is also another objective of our strategic cooperation in this area. The increasing possibilities for enhancing cooperation in order to protect our strategic interests will continue to determine the dimensions of our partnership. We will continue to work with the USA in this region.

With regard to security-related challenges, our enhanced and growing defense and security cooperation is extremely important. We have spoken at length on this subject as well.

The strengthening of India’s defense capabilities, with the help of USA, is something that we truly appreciate. We have also decided to enhance maritime security cooperation between the two nations. President Trump and I have also spoken about strengthening bilateral defense technology and our trade and manufacturing partnership, which we believe will be mutually beneficial to us.

We also discussed international issues and our common strategic interests. In this context, we are extremely grateful for the continued support of the United States for India’s membership of international institutions and regimes. We truly appreciate the support, because this is also in the interest of both our nations.

President Trump, I thank you for your feelings of friendship towards India and myself. I deeply appreciate your strong commitment to the enhancement of our bilateral relations. I am sure that under your leadership, our mutually beneficial strategic partnership will gain new strength, new positivity, and will reach new heights, and that your vast and successful experience in the business world will lend an aggressive and forward-looking agenda to our relations.

In this journey of India-America relations, I think I would like to thank you for providing great leadership. Be assured that in this joint journey of our two nations towards development, growth and prosperity, I will remain a driven, determined, and decisive partner.

Excellency, my visit today and the extensive talks I have held with you have been very successful, very fruitful. And before leaving this mic, I would like to invite you to India, along with your family. And I hope that you will give me the opportunity to welcome you and host you in India.

And at the end, once again, I’d like to thank you for the warm welcome extended by you and the First Lady to myself and my delegation, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you. (Applause.)

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Thank you very much, everybody. I appreciate it. Thank you.

India-US joint statement: 'We will destroy radical Islamic terrorism,' says US President Trump

The White House has two new occupants: US First Lady Melania Trump and her 11-year-old son Barron have finally moved in to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Melania, Barron finally move into White House

Donald Trump spent his life running a family firm and the White House is no exception: the first 100 days have given his adult children an unprecedented role even if the first lady lives in the shadows.

Here is a look at the president's tight-knit, wealthy celebrity clan, who with the arguable exception of his third wife appear comfortable in the spotlight and content to defy critics' outrage about nepotism.

Gatekeepers Ivanka and Jared

Trump's 35-year-old daughter Ivanka, a mother-of-three and ex model-turned-businesswoman who reportedly has some Democratic friends -- is reputedly Trump's favourite child, and the woman most often seen at his side.

An unpaid adviser with an office in the West Wing, who with husband Jared Kushner still has investments worth up to $740 million, Ivanka is a routine fixture at meetings with visiting heads of state.

To many she is the de facto first lady, taking on duties traditionally carried out by a wife -- from dialing up the International Space Station, to accompanying the Canadian prime minister to Broadway or attending the G20 in Berlin, provoking groans for defending her father.

She does all this looking immaculate in a parade of designer frocks, and posting glossy photographs of her family and White House moments to her 3.4 million Instagram followers.

The US press often portrays her and Jared as moderating influences over a president hot to temper, but there has been little evidence that their assumed progressive views have tempered policy decisions.

Sales of her clothing line, which she ran before moving to Washington, soared last year, but the brand was dumped by some department stores under pressure from activists demanding a boycott of Trump products.

Jared, 36, is one of the most powerful men in Washington, a "special advisor" with a widening portfolio of responsibilities spanning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, America's opioid epidemic and extending to a tour of Iraq before the secretary of state.

His widening role has been accompanied by reports of bitter infighting with right-wing ideologue and chief strategist Steve Bannon.

Orthodox Jewish and the grandson of Holocaust survivors, Kushner has no prior experience other than discretion, loyalty, running the family's real estate business and publishing a New York magazine

Home guard Don Jr and Eric

Unlike sister Ivanka who stepped down from the family business, Trump's two eldest sons Don Jr. and Eric stayed behind in New York and run the Trump Organization in their father's absence.

Technically not supposed to discuss business with their father, his refusal to divest completely from the sprawling group has been slammed by ethics experts. Both sons are happy to engage with the media.

Father of five Don Jr, 39, is thought to harbor political ambitions of his own. Eric, 33, has given a slew of interviews, suggesting that Ivanka influenced the missile strikes on Syria, calling nepotism a "factor of life" and standing by his father's predilection for golf.

First lady who?

Melania, a 47-year-old former model from Slovenia and Trump's third wife, is the first foreign-born first lady in two centuries.

Known for a fondness for European designer clothes, nude photo shoots in the past and taking a back seat, Melania lives in New York with 11-year-old son Barron and makes only fleeting public appearances.

Officially moving into the White House this summer at the end of the school year, she is considered a reluctant first lady who has been criticized for plagiarizing Michelle Obama and for her heavy accent.

More than half a million people signed a petition demanding she move straight to Washington or foot herself the bill for the $127,000-$146,000 a day security costs of staying behind in New York.

She settled a lawsuit with the Daily Mail that alleged she worked as an escort in the 1990s. She was most recently in the headlines for nudging her husband into raising his arm for the national anthem at the Easter egg roll.

Meet the Trumps: The White House family business, first lady who?

United States President Donald Trump's wife Melania is under increasing pressure to move the White House, after half a million people signed a petition citing that the security costs to keep her at Trump Tower in New York were too "exorbitant".

Melania has continued to stay in New York with her Barron despite Donald Trump assuming office in Washington more than two months back.

The petitioners say Melania should either move to the White House or pay for her own security, United Kingdon-based newspaper Independent reported.

A New York Police Department letter stated that the security costs ranged between $127,000 to $146,000 a day -- an amount that is being paid from taxpayers' money.

The petition states: “The US taxpayer is paying an exorbitant amount of money to protect the First Lady in Trump Tower, located in New York City. As to help relieve the national debt, this expense yields no positive results for the nation and should be cut from being funded.”

The petition had initially aimed to garner signatures from 150,000 people but the movement has snowballed more than threefold.

The petition will be sent to the US Senate as well as Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

People who backed the movement widely criticised the Trump family's extravagant lifestyle.

The 70-year-old president's spate of golf vacations has also come under public scrutiny. Trump has taken 12 such vacations ever since he took over the White House eleven weeks back. Each trip of his costs the taxpayers around $3 million, according to Politico.

In comparison, the previous president Barack Obama's vacation cost taxpayers $12.1 million per year, a Forbes report stated.

Half-a-million petitioners demand Melania Trump move to the White House

The White House on Monday released the official portrait of First Lady Melania Trump, with the photograph of the former model dividing public opinion.

Trump is shown from the waist up, standing with arms crossed, dressed in a black jacket with a black bow around her neck. She's wearing a very large diamond ring on her left hand, and a more subdued sparkler on her right.

Shot by Belgian-born photographer Regine Mahaux, who has previously worked with the Trump family, the first lady is smiling slightly, with a perfectly flawless visage.

"I am honored to serve in the role of first lady, and look forward to working on behalf of the American people over the coming years," Trump said in a short statement accompanying the photo's release.

First Lady Melania Trump's official portrait unveiled but is it good or bad?

America's new First Lady Melania Trump won rave reviews Friday for donning an elegant Ralph Lauren powder blue suit to her husband's inauguration in a look channeling Jacqueline Kennedy.

Her cashmere turtleneck dress fell to her knee, paired with a cross-over jacket cropped to the waist and matching suede gloves. In a break from the past, Melania wore her hair swept up with diamond stud earrings.

The look won gushing praise online and earned comparisons with Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of Democratic president John F. Kennedy and considered one of America's most stylish first ladies.

A Ralph Lauren spokeswoman confirmed to AFP that Trump was wearing a custom-made Ralph Lauren collection dress, jacket and gloves.

The 46-year-old former model originally from Slovenia, is America's only second foreign-born first lady since England's Louisa Adams, wife of John Quincy Adams, who was president from 1825 to 1829.

Ralph Lauren is perhaps America's most iconic living designer, a 77-year-old master inspired by European sensibilities but whose clothes define a uniquely American sense of elegance.

A string of designers have refused to work with Trump because of her husband's politics, making her sartorial debut as first lady -- hot on the heels of the much-loved Michelle Obama -- closely scrutinized.

Despite being criticized for previously favoring high-end European clothes and foregoing Obama's winning combination of US high street meets high fashion, Trump is proving herself an adroit dresser.

On Friday she picked a little-known New York designer of Hispanic descent and daughter of a wounded veteran to design her military-inspired, black coat to visit the National Arlington Cemetery.

While commentators griped about her heavy sunglasses and grumpy demeanor, in the evening she donned a stunning golden gown from Reem Acra, a Lebanese-born American designer, for a candlelight dinner.

Vogue said her choice "went the route of classic glamour" similar to former Republican first ladies Nancy Reagan and Laura Bush.

Her looks have not only been appropriate to the moment but given a nod toward inclusivity at a time when her husband is under attack for divisive rhetoric and threat to deport up to three million illegal immigrants.

But Trump will have to work hard to keep up with 35-year-old stepdaughter Ivanka, widely feted for her elegance and who unlike Melania is moving straight to Washington with her husband, an incoming White House advisor.

The two couples travelled in a joint motorcade for the 2.5 miles (four kilometers) down Pennsylvania Avenue to the inauguration ceremony at the Capitol.

But shortly before midday Friday, Trump will place his hand on Abraham Lincoln's bible, recite the oath of office on the steps of the Capitol and become the most powerful man on earth.

His staff, many shunned by friends for supporting a man who has been labeled a racist and bigot by his critics, will become power players in the White House.

Big changes

For his critics, Trump's arrival in Washington on Thursday onboard an Air Force jet was more like a hostile takeover than a traditional changing of the guard.

Small demonstrations popped up across the city center on Friday, with shouts of "not my president" and "No Trump, No KKK, no fascist USA." Some tried to prevent Trump supporters from passing, but police intervened.

A much larger rally is planned for Saturday.

On Thursday evening, hundreds of protesters demonstrated outside a pro-Trump event, heckling and shouting at departing guests and lighting protest signs on fire before police used chemical spray on the crowd.

Trump enters office with a 37 percent approval rating, the lowest on record, according to a CBS News poll.

Most of Obama's White House staff have cleaned out their desks and the normally busy corridors of the West Wing were unusually quiet Friday. Staffers expressed relief at the prospect of rest, but foreboding about the road ahead.

That sentiment is echoed across many of the world's capitals. Trump has vowed to tear up Obama's policies and re-examine decades-old alliances with Europe and in Asia.

Trump aides are promising an address that is at once short -- at around 20 minutes -- and philosophical.

"He will discuss what it means to be an American, the challenges that we face, as members of the middle class, that they face," he said.

Obama, Trump arrive at Capitol for swearing-in ceremony

There's no doubt which side the fashion world supported during the US presidential campaign.

For years, First Lady Michelle Obama and Democrats' vanquished presidential candidate Hillary Clinton have been favourites with fashion designers who dressed them in clothes aimed at evoking their values.

But New York-based French designer Sophie Theallet has gone a step further, throwing down the gauntlet by refusing to dress future first lady Melania Trump because of the political views of her husband, President-elect Donald Trump.

Theallet is urging other designers to follow her lead.

"As one who celebrates and strives for diversity, individual freedom and respect for all lifestyles, I will not participate in dressing or associating in any way with the next first lady," she wrote in an open letter published on Thursday.

"The rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia unleashed by her husband's presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by."

"I am well aware it is not wise to get involved in politics," Theallet added.

"That said, as a family-owned company, our bottom line is not just about money."

The letter has prompted a flood of reaction on social media, much of it negative.

Theallet, 52, who has worked in the United States for more than fifteen years, is a regular fixture at New York's fashion week.

Her feminine designs have appealed to Michelle Obama, who provided welcome publicity by donning several of her dresses since 2009.

"She has contributed to having our name recognised and respected worldwide," Theallet wrote of the current first lady, indicating purpose behind Obama's fashion choices.

"Her values, actions and grace have always resonated deeply within me."

Sophie Theallet does not approve of her husband's, US President-elect Donald Trump, political views

"The rhetoric of racism, sexism and xenophobia unleashed by her husband's presidential campaign are incompatible with the shared values we live by." French fashion designer refuses to dress Melania Trump

At the time of vioting, Donald Trump appeared skeptical of a demographic he thought was secure -- his wife. It wouldn't be his second or first wife to part ways from him, but Melania seemed like a bigtime MAGA enthusiast.

She had done so much for him this election: falsely post on her website she graduated from university, deliver and write a speech written and delivered by Michelle Obama, nobly defend her husband for saying he grabbed other women's vaginas without asking permission.

It was the customary American grooming for every First Lady before her. So why did Trump appear to doubt Melania when it mattered most?

Over the course of the campaign two or three Sensitive Sallies were miffed by the Trump Campaign, only because Donald has been consistently racist sexist and a xenophobe who doesn't just lie a lot but has never said anything true despite talking ceaselessly on TV since 2014.

US Election 2016: Trump unsure Melania Trump will vote Trump

Melania Trump rose to her husband's defence on Monday, describing lewd comments the Republican presidential nominee made on a leaked 2005 video in which he bragged about groping women as "boy talk."

Trump, who has kept a low profile during her husband's presidential campaign, gave her first television interview since the October 7 release of the tape that has shaken Donald Trump's campaign ahead of the November 8 election.

She told CNN her husband was engaged in "boy talk, and he was led on - like, egged on - from the host to say dirty and bad stuff" in the conversation with "Access Hollywood" host Billy Bush.

She added in a CNN interview that aired on Monday night that she was surprised because she had never heard her husband use that kind of language before.

"No. No, that's why I was surprised, because I said like I don't know that person that would talk that way, and that he would say that kind of stuff in private," Melania Trump said.

In partial transcripts from a separate interview with Fox News, she said she had forgiven her husband for the comments in the tape, which was first published by the Washington Post.

"Those words, they were offensive to me and they were inappropriate. And he apologised to me. And I ... accept his apology. And we are moving on.”

They were her first public comments since a statement she issued after the tape's publication in which she said: "The words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me. This does not represent the man that I know. I hope people will accept his apology, as I have."

Melania Trump told Fox News that her husband, a New York businessman and former reality television star, was committed to running for office even though it was difficult because he had been "in so many shows, so many tapes" over the years.

The RealClearPolitics average of national opinion polls shows his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, currently leading Trump by 6.9 percentage points, at 45.9 per cent to 39 per cent.

Asked if it was fair for the media or her husband to bring up charges of infidelity in former President Bill Clinton's past, Melania Trump told Fox News: "Well, if they bring up my past, why not?”

After Trump denied during a debate with Clinton on October 9 that he had actually done the things he bragged about in the tape, a number of women accused him of groping and kissing them without permission in incidents stretching back decades. He has denied the charges.

Asked about those accusations, Melania Trump told Fox News: “All these women are coming out and they are allegations but they are not true. Why now? Why three weeks before the election?”

Melania Trump calls taped comments by Donald Trump 'boy talk'

Melania Trump threatened People Magazine and a former staff reporter with legal action late Thursday over "false and completely fictionalised" statements in the writer's account of Donald Trump forcing himself on her during a 2005 interview.

The Republican presidential candidate's wife denied that she encountered or conversed with writer Natasha Stoynoff in New York, tweeting a letter from her lawyer demanding a "prominent retraction and apology" of certain statements in the article, and threatening that Melania would otherwise "consider her legal options."

"The true facts are these: Mrs Trump did not encounter Ms Stoynoff on the street, nor have any conversation with her," lawyer Charles Harder wrote. "The two are not friends and were never friends or even friendly."

His law firm requested that People and Stoynoff confirm within 24 hours that the demands were being met, saying "failure to do so will require Mrs Trump to consider her legal options."

The letter did not dispute Stoynoff's allegations that Donald Trump forcibly kissed her during an interview for an article to mark his wedding anniversary with his then-pregnant third wife Melania in 2005.

"I turned around, and within seconds he was pushing me against the wall and forcing his tongue down my throat," Stoynoff wrote, an account the Republican White House hopeful vehemently denied.

"These vicious claims about me of inappropriate conduct with women are totally and absolutely false," he told a rally in West Palm Beach on Thursday.

At least six women have accused the New York mogul of making unwanted physical advances in accounts reported by The New York Times, NBC, People Magazine and others, most of them after he asserted during Sunday's presidential debate with his democratic rival Hillary Clinton that he had never sexually assaulted a woman.

He said his lawyers were preparing a lawsuit against The New York Times, which published the accounts of two women who accused him of groping and kissing them, unless the paper retracts its article.

In her People story, Stoynoff said she asked to be taken off the "Trump beat", but later ran into the real estate magnate's wife in New York.

"That winter, I actually bumped into Melania on Fifth Avenue, in front of Trump Tower as she walked into the building, carrying baby Barron," Stoynoff said. "'Natasha, why don't we see you anymore?' (Melania Trump) asked, giving me a hug. I was quiet and smiled, telling her I'd missed her, and I squeezed little Barron's foot."

The potential first lady's lawyer Charles Harder also represented former wrestler Hulk Hogan in his successful lawsuit against Gawker Media, which resulted in a $140 million jury award against the entertainment website for releasing a sex tape featuring Hogan and a friend's wife.

A former staffer of the magazine has accused Donald Trump of assaulting her in 2005

Melania Trump threatens People Magazine with lawsuit

Just over a week after she blazed into controversy for plagiarising Michelle Obama, the website of Donald Trump's third wife Melania mysteriously vanished following questions about her university education.

"The website in question was created in 2012 and has been removed because it does not accurately reflect my current business and professional interests," the mother of one tweeted yesterday.

The website disappeared after US media questioned whether the wife of the Republican nominee for president had a degree in architecture from the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, as the online biography stated.

Trump told MSNBC in February only that she "studied" design and architecture. A follow-up interview with GQ Magazine published in April said she dropped out after a year to pursue a modeling career in Milan and later Paris.

Those who try to access www.melaniatrump.com are now automatically diverted to her husband's company website.

While his three adult children, who hold executive positions at The Trump Organization, have biographies on the site, she does not. Neither is she mentioned in her husband's more than 4,000-word online biography.

Yesterday's tweet was a rare update from Melania Trump in the 13 months since her husband launched his controversial bid for the White House.

While the ex-model used to post regular style, food and scenic photographs, she has tweeted rarely since his foray into politics.

Last week, a staffer apologised for cribbing remarks from the current Democratic first lady for a speech Melania Trump delivered at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

Melania Trump had "always liked" Michelle Obama and read out passages from one of her speeches as examples of what she wanted to say, said the staffer.

"I did not check Mrs Obama's speeches. This was my mistake, and I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused," she said.

Melania Trump's website deleted after degree questions

Donald Trump's wife, Melania, in her first major political speech on Monday, portrayed her husband as a talented, compassionate and unrelenting leader who would unify rather than divide the country if elected to the White House.

The Slovenian-born jewellery designer and former model delivered the speech, part of which resembled an address given by current First Lady Michelle Obama in 2008, to a cheering crowd at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland after a one-minute introduction from Trump.

The presumptive Republican nominee made a dramatic entrance, silhouetted against a white background, to the accompaniment of Queen's 1977 rock anthem, "We Are the Champions."

"I have been with Donald for 18 years and I have been aware of his love for this country since we first met," the aspiring first lady told the convention. "He's tough when he has to be, but he's also kind and fair and caring."

"Donald wants prosperity for all Americans," she said, reading from a teleprompter, as people applauded.

Her roughly 15-minute speech was a bid to soften the image of the New York businessman-turned-politician, who has been accused of bigotry and callousness for his calls to suspend Muslim immigration and deport millions of undocumented immigrants if elected.

He has also been criticized for insults directed at women, political opponents and journalists.

Trump's Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, has accused Trump, 70, of lacking the experience and temperament needed to work in the Oval Office. On Monday, Clinton, 68, used an address to a largely black audience to cast Trump as someone who would divide the country along racial, ethnic and religious lines.

Trump supporters take jibs at Clinton

The convention's opening night featured a string of emotional speakers attacking Clinton's record as secretary of state under President Barack Obama, many arguing she had made Americans vulnerable to Islamist militancy.

"I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son," said Pat Smith, the mother of an information management officer who was among the four Americans killed in an attack on a US mission in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012.

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, whose administration has been credited with sharply reducing crime in the city during the 1990s and who oversaw the city's response to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center and killed almost 3,000 people, gave a highly charged speech slamming Clinton and making the case for Trump.

"What I did for New York, Donald Trump will do for America!" he said.

Killings overshadow convention

The gathering opened on Monday afternoon in the shadow of racially tinged killings of police officers and black men, and as protesters for and against Trump faced off in a plaza a few blocks from the convention, shouting slogans at each other, separated by a wall of police.

The protests were largely peaceful, with law enforcement officers outnumbering demonstrators.

Sunday's shooting of three policemen in Baton Rouge, Louisiana - a targeted attack that may have been retaliation for a series of police killings of black Americans - hung over the gathering.

Trump lashed out at Obama early on Monday over the shootings, saying the Democratic president "doesn't have a clue."

Trump has sought to position himself as the law-and-order candidate, in an echo of Republican Richard Nixon's successful presidential campaign of 1968.

Trump's wife talks at Republican convention, humanises The Donald

The Republican convention kicks off Monday with a one-two punch of law-and-order tough-talk, and Donald Trump's wife playing character witness as the bombastic mogul seeks to lock up his presidential nomination.

Melania Trump, a Slovenian-born former model, will headline the opening night of the 2016 convention in Cleveland, Ohio, which takes place against a backdrop of fear over racial violence and unrest abroad.

A spate of race-tinged shootings -- including the killing of three police officers in Louisiana Sunday -- has put the country on edge.

Terror attacks overseas, most recently in Nice, and an attempted coup in Turkey, have only stoked a sense that the world is falling apart.

President Barack Obama has urged Americans to temper their words and show stronger common resolve, but Trump is instead highlighting divisions.

"We are TRYING to fight ISIS, and now our own people are killing our police," Trump tweeted shortly after the Baton Rogue shooting, referring to the Islamic State group.

"Our country is divided and out of control. The world is watching."

Trump has portrayed himself as a sheriff who can fix things.

He believes that the presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton should be jailed for using a private email server to handle sensitive government documents, something the FBI said was careless but not a criminal.

On Monday Trump will also call on retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn and tough-talking Senator Joni Ernst as convention speakers to back up his point. Of more immediate concern for Trump however is a split among Republicans.

The reality TV star's unorthodox style and hard-right message have left the party more divided than it has been in a generation.

Melania Trump, along with the candidate's son and daughters, will all be rolled out at the convention in an attempt to humanize The Donald.

Polls show that Trump struggles badly with moderate voters, and his campaign will want to project a more positive image to the general electorate.

Trump's choice of Indiana governor Mike Pence as his vice presidential running mate could help shore up his position among conservatives, although the real estate billionaire seemed tepid about his decision.

In a remarkable first joint appearance on Saturday, Trump eventually got around to taking about Pence and explained why he was picked, in less than enthusiastic terms.

"One of the reasons is party unity, so many people have said, `party unity.` Because I`m an outsider."

Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort insisted that there was unity. "This is a Trump convention. The party is united," he said.

"It's a few people who are holding up and they don't reflect anything other than their personal opinion."

Inside the halls it remains to be seen if the "Never Trump" camp will make themselves heard.

Outside, however, law enforcement is bracing for a wave of protests.

Roads in the Ohio city are lined with concrete barriers and helicopters buzz overhead.

Cleveland, a Midwestern city of nearly 400,000, has taken out $50 million in protest insurance.

Ohio's open-carry law, which allows people with proper permits to carry a loaded weapon on the streets, is adding to fears of violence.

"We have policies in place for mass arrests through our prosecutor`s office, our clerk`s office and our court system," Cleveland police chief Calvin Williams told reporters.

"One of the reasons is party unity, so many people have said, `party unity.` Because I`m an outsider." Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort insisted that there was unity. "This is a Trump convention. The party is united," he said. "It's a few people who are holding up and they don't reflect anything other than their personal opinion." Inside the halls it remains to be seen if the "Never Trump" camp will make themselves heard. (AFP)

Republican convention kicks off today, Trump looks to lock up presidential nomination

Beleaguered US presidential candidate Donald Trump is facing hostility from within his own party following the release of a recording showing him passing derogatory comments about women.

The Republican party, of which Trump is the standard bearer in this election, has condemned the sexist comments made by him.

More than 60 Republicans, former and present officeholders, have issued statements denouncing Trump's remarks about groping women months after he got married to his third wife Melania.

Twenty prominent Republicans have even called for his resignation from the presidential race.

Trump's wife Melania was equally critical of her husband, saying, "This does not represent the man that I know."

Calling Trump's behaviour "unacceptable", she however asked the US public to pardon him as he has the "heart and mind of a leader".

Trump's vice presidential running mate Mike Pence was also critical of his comments, saying he would be unable to defend the use of such words.

"As a husband and father, I was offended by the words and actions described by Donald Trump," said Pence, who is governor of Indiana.

Trump's presidential rival Hillary Clinton is yet to publicly chastise Trump's lewd comments.

'Will never drop out of the race'

Despite the barrage of criticism he has faced since the release of the recording, Trump seemed defiant when he tweeted: "The media and establishment want me out of the race so badly - I WILL NEVER DROP OUT OF THE RACE, WILL NEVER LET MY SUPPORTERS DOWN!"

Trump vows to stay in race after lewd comments surface

Donald Trump faced an embarrassing plagiarism scandal today that tarnished his wife Melania's prime-time speech to a Republican National Convention already roiled by an opening day rank-and-file revolt.

It was a rough start to the four-day buildup to Trump's presidential nomination, one designed for maximum media exposure for the Republican standard bearer and his supporters.

With millions watching on TV at home, Melania Trump delivered a defence of her husband and his bid to be the next president of the United States before thousands of cheering convention delegates.

But unmistakeable similarities between a passage in her speech about her guiding values and one in a speech given by Michelle Obama at the 2008 Democratic convention soon came to light.

A senior Trump communications adviser, Jason Miller, acknowledged in a statement that Melania Trump's team of writers "in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking."

However, Paul Manafort, Trump's campaign chief, denied there was any "cribbing of Michelle Obama's speech."

"I mean, she was speaking in front of 35 million people last night. She knew that. To think that she would be cribbing Michelle Obama's words is crazy," he said on CNN.

The development came after a chaotic start to the Republican gathering in Cleveland which erupted in jeers from Trump opponents after their bid to hold a roll call vote on convention rules was quashed.

"We deserve to be heard, this is the people's convention!" said Diana Shores, a delegate from Virginia, while pro-Trump delegates tried to drown out the rebels with shouts of "Shame! Shame!"

Today the convention holds a state-by-state roll call vote with each delegation confirming the winner in their primary election.

Although a routine procedure, it too could be the scene of further disruptions by anti-Trump factions. But Trump fans insist delegates heed the will of the grassroots of the party and make him the Republican nominee without equivocation.

The billionaire won a thumping victory in a series of statewide party elections, garnering more than 13 million votes - the most of any Republican nominee ever. This was meant to be Trump's moment - the point at which he sealed Republican divisions and marched the party toward November's election and the White House.

Making a surprise cameo appearance at the gathering in Cleveland to introduce his wife, the bombastic tycoon showed confidence that belied the day's spasm of public division. "We're going to win so big" said Trump. "Ladies and gentlemen, it is my great honour to present the next First Lady of the United States."

Ahead of the convention, he had tried to assuage conservative critics, and bring the party together by naming Indiana governor Mike Pence as his running mate.

First the lady

But it was Trump's Slovenian-born wife Melania, until now only a minor presence in the campaign, who stepped up as his chief advocate on the convention's opening day. She took the stage with all the allure of a former model and in a strong accent made the case for Americans to entrust Trump with the presidency.

"Donald is, and always has been, an amazing leader," said the 46-year-old. "Now, he will go to work for you."

"He does not give up," she said of her husband, portraying him as a loving father and successful businessman who would be a strong and compassionate president. She also sought to put a more human face on a candidate many voters see as brash and egotistical.

"Donald intends to represent all the people, not just some of the people. That includes Christians and Jews and Muslims. It includes Hispanics and African-Americans and Asians and the poor and the middle class."

Plagiarism

No sooner had the speech been delivered it was overshadowed by the plagiarism controversy. In a passage that appeared to be lifted from Michelle Obama's speech eight years ago, Melania discussed her parents' influence on her.

"My parents impressed on me the values: that you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond and you do what you say and keep your promise. That you treat people with respect. They taught me to show the values and morals in my daily life. That is the lesson that I continue to pass along to our son," Melania Trump said.

"And we need to pass those lessons on to the many generations to follow. Because we want our children in this nation to know that the only limit to your achievements is the strength of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

In her 2008 speech, Michelle Obama had said:

"And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them.

"And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children - and all children in this nation - to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."
