In Nagaland, the NDPP-BJP coalition won 37 seats in the 60-member Assembly in the recent elections. The government will be led by Neiphu Rio. Rio has been sworn in as the chief minister for the record fifth term. As per PTI, apart from Modi, among the attendees at the oath-taking ceremony were Indian&nbsp;Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J P Nadda and Assam Chief Minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma.

As no party managed to secure the majority mark of 31, the NPP is likely to ally with the BJP or the United Democratic Party (UDP) or maybe even both to form a coalition government. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking his support and blessings in forming the new government. The UDP finished second by winning 11 seats in the assembly, and the Congress secured five seats. However, the party's state chief and Shillong MP, Vincent H Pala, lost to the ruling NPP's Santa Mary Shylla by 1,828 votes in the Sutnga Saipung constituency in the East Jaintia Hills. Its former ally and the ruling NPP party is on the way to becoming the largest party in the state with its candidates leading on 20 seats, just 10 seats behind the majority mark of 30. BJP fielded its candidates on all 60 seats of the Meghalaya assembly but it’s is expected to win only 10 to 15 of them.

Ernest Mawrie, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Meghalaya, predicted on Wednesday that his party would win 10 to 15 seats in that state before the results of the elections in three Northeastern states were announced. He added that no party would be able to form the next government in Meghalaya without the BJP. In a statement given to ANI, he said, "After voting, we have discussed and we believe, we will win a minimum of 10 seats and a maximum of 15 seats."

Meanwhile, social media is inundated with rumours that a post-poll alliance between former allies BJP and NPP is possible. A recent meeting between Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya incumbent CM Sangama has also further fuelled the speculation market.

If the projected figures turn true, the NPP will form the government and once again thwart the hopes of the BJP to lead in the state. Ahead of the polls, the BJP called the incumbent government of Meghalaya the ‘most corrupt’.&nbsp;

The tenure of the 10th Meghalaya Assembly is scheduled to end on 15 March 2023. The previous assembly elections were held in February 2018. After the election, a coalition led by the National People's Party formed the state government, with Conrad Sangma becoming Chief Minister.

The elections to the 59 seats of the 60-member assembly were held on Thursday.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is seeking re-election for his second consecutive term in the top post. Former Chief Minister and the current leader of the opposition in the state, Mukul Sangma, is the Trinamool Congress's face in the state.

The CPI(M)-led Left Front could manage to win just 16 seats. While the unprecedented consolidation of Bengali and tribal votes was seen as the reason behind the BJP alliance's triumph, the CPI(M) accused it of using "money and muscle power" to win the election. "The BJP used money and muscle power and managed to bring together all the anti-Left forces," CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said. Though the ruling Congress emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya, it failed to secure a majority, winning 21 seats. The party could not even open its account in Tripura and Nagaland. The BJP could win only two seats in Christian-dominated Meghalaya, but its North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) partner, the National People's Party (NPP), clinched 19. Together, they equal the Congress's tally. Smaller parties that won 13 seats and three independents will play a decisive role in government formation. Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath, who was despatched to Shillong to explore the ways of forming a Congress-led government, said the party had the support of MLAs, necessary to prove the majority on the floor of the Assembly. It is believed that G Kaito Aye, the JD(U) nominee who won from Satakha, and Independent Tongpang Ozukum have expressed their wish to join the BJP-NDPP alliance, taking its tally to the magic figure of 31. The BJP had parted ways with the NPF just ahead of the polls and joined hands with the newly-launched NDPP of three-time former chief minister Neiphiu Rio, also an old Naga People's Front hand. Zeliang, the NPF leader, said his party continued to be a part of the North-East Democratic Alliance, led by the BJP, and hoped that the saffron party would form the new government with it. "We have not parted with the alliance. I hope the BJP will join our government. I will welcome it if they join us. The BJP has two ministers in my cabinet," he told a news channel.
