German perfume retailer Douglas is gearing up to announce its intention to proceed with an initial public offering (IPO) in the coming days, according to two individuals familiar with the matter.

The move, if executed, will serve as a litmus test for Europe's equity markets. Majority-owned by CVC Capital Partners, Douglas plans to issue its intention to float on the Frankfurt bourse imminently, contingent on market conditions remaining favorable.

However, there is a possibility that the announcement may be delayed until next Monday, as a final decision is pending.

The timing of Douglas' IPO announcement coincides with a week rife with significant macro-economic data releases, including US inflation figures scheduled for Thursday.

Investment banks are poised to initiate discussions with potential investors following the intention to float announcement, aiming to ascertain a valuation range for the share sale.

While Reuters previously reported Douglas' aim to go public by the end of March, official spokespeople for the IPO declined to comment on the matter.

The prospective IPO announcement occurs against a backdrop of improving sentiment towards new stock listings, exemplified by the successful IPOs of German defense contractor Renk and Athens International Airport earlier this month.

The growing consensus that interest rates have plateaued contributes to a more favorable environment for equity markets.

Additionally, the CBOE Volatility Index, often referred to as Wall Street's fear gauge, remains at levels conducive for IPOs, bolstering confidence in the upcoming offerings.

Douglas' IPO plans are part of a broader trend, with at least four other major IPOs slated for the first half of the year, as per sources.

Hedge fund manager Michael Burry, renowned for his astute predictions preceding the 2008 US housing market collapse, has made significant moves in his portfolio according to recently released securities filings.

Burry's Scion Asset Management disclosed its actions for the fourth quarter of 2023, showing notable acquisitions and exits in various sectors. Among these transactions, Burry's fund added 375,000 shares of Warner Brothers Discovery, illustrating a strategic shift in investment focus. The disclosures, filed as 13-Fs, offer a retrospective glimpse into the portfolio strategies of often-guarded hedge funds.

During the quarter, Scion Asset Management initiated positions in several companies, indicating a diversified approach. Burry's fund acquired 200,000 shares of restaurant software company Toast Inc, alongside 225,000 shares of discount retail chain Big Lots, and 154,142 shares of Gen Restaurant Group.

These additions signify Burry's confidence in specific sectors despite broader market fluctuations. The filings underscore the importance of transparency in understanding the dynamics of institutional investor portfolios.

In a notable departure, the fund closed out a put option position on semiconductor stocks, previously valued at $47.4 million. The decision to exit this position coincides with a significant rise in the iShares Semiconductor ETF over the fourth quarter, suggesting a strategic reassessment by Burry and his team.

While put options typically benefit from declines in underlying shares, the fund's actions reflect a shifting market outlook. The disclosures shed light on the intricacies of hedging strategies employed by prominent investors.

Additionally, Burry's fund liquidated positions in Bookings Holdings and automaker Stellantis during the quarter. These divestments highlight a dynamic approach to portfolio management, with Burry reallocating resources based on evolving market conditions.

The filings serve as a valuable resource for analysts and investors seeking insights into the decision-making processes of hedge funds. Despite their retrospective nature, 13-F filings provide crucial information for understanding investment trends.

Reflecting on market performance, shares of Warner Brothers Discovery have declined by 15 per cent year-to-date, while Big Lots has experienced a substantial decrease of nearly 55 per cent over the same period.

Conversely, Toast Inc shares have seen a modest increase of approximately 7.5 per cent, with Gen Restaurant Group showing slightly more robust growth at over 13 per cent. These fluctuations underline the dynamic nature of equity markets and the challenges faced by investors in navigating them.

Burry's largest holdings, Alibaba Group Holdings and JD.com Inc, have both experienced declines of 6 per cent or more year-to-date amid concerns surrounding the Chinese economy's growth trajectory. These developments highlight the importance of monitoring macroeconomic factors and their impact on investment strategies. While Burry's past successes have earned him a reputation as a savvy investor, his recent portfolio adjustments reflect the ongoing evolution of market dynamics.

Industry leaders in the automotive sector have recently voiced apprehension regarding the feasibility of their proposed electric vehicle (EV) plans.

According to a Business Insider report, these executives have acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead and the obstacles that must be overcome to bring their ambitious projects to fruition.

During the recent third-quarter earnings call of General Motors (GM), the company's CEO, Mary Barra, who is known for her optimism regarding electric vehicles, admitted uncertainties in achieving the production goals of 100,000 EVs in the latter half of this year and an additional 400,000 by the first six months of 2024. Barra acknowledged that the transition to EVs is proving to be a bit bumpy.

Many are sceptical about the future of EVs, not just GM. Even Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has expressed concerns about economic issues affecting vehicle demand. Mercedes-Benz has had to offer substantial discounts on their EVs to boost sales, which indicates the harsh reality of the EV market. Business Insider quoted CFO Harald Wilhelm as saying, "This is a pretty brutal space."

Executives across the industry have noticed an increase in inventory and have found it challenging to sell EVs, even with significant price reductions and incentives.

The trend of price reductions in the EV market is becoming more common, with nearly all current EV models selling below their original sticker price. Some companies are even offering manufacturers incentives of up to 10 per cent.

The reason for this decrease in sales can be attributed to several factors, including cost considerations, infrastructure challenges, and lifestyle barriers that potential buyers face when considering the adoption of EVs.

Automakers are responding to the challenges posed by the EV market.

Considering slowing EV demand, Ford has extended its deadline to achieve annual EV production targets and abandoned its future goal of producing 2 million EVs. Business Insider cited Honda's CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, who acknowledged the difficulty in gauging the shifting EV environment, leading the company to halt the development of an affordable EV.

In a recent statement, Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motor, emphasised the industry's current awareness of the challenges that come with EVs. Toyoda, who was previously sceptical of the industry's focus on pure electric blueprints, acknowledged that "people are finally seeing reality."

Porsche AG, a German sports car manufacturer, is doubling down on expanding its presence in India, as a new generation of Indians look for supercar brands with a sustainable story, Detlev von Platen, a member of the company’s executive board told Mint.

“India has a chance (to grow the luxury car market) when you look at its willingness to invest in sustainable technology and infrastructure. We’d like to learn more about it. At Porsche, we have a clear commitment to be net-carbon neutral by 2030, which means our entire supply chain and even the usage of our products must be net carbon-neutral. India can be a country where the transition to EVs can happen quickly. We don’t see India as an emerging market anymore,” Mint quoted Platen as saying.

In addition, Platen noted that India has a strong momentum as it embraces investment in research and development (R&D), sustainability, and infrastructure. Although many opportunities have opened up over the past ten years, he said that the company will not set up assembly units in India. Instead, the vehicle manufacturer would prioritise value-oriented growth, sustainable growth, and national brand building in the country.

By the end of the year, the German high-performance automaker would have 10 dealer-investors in India, giving it a presence in all significant tier-one markets, the company said.

Platen also told Mint that Porsche is one of the fastest growing luxury car brands in India. As part of the luxury car market in India, Planten said that Porsche would continue to be small in terms of its volume.

He added that the group would not see India as an emerging market anymore, especially in terms of establishing all operations in the country, arguing that India is a leading country in terms of software technologies.

India has overtaken China as the most attractive emerging market for investing, according to 85 sovereign wealth funds and 57 central banks representing USD 21 trillion in assets.

India is increasingly viewed positively for its improved business and political stability, favourable demographics, regulatory initiatives, and a friendly environment for sovereign investors, according to a report by global investment management firm Invesco.

The report titled ‘Invesco Global Sovereign Asset Management Study’ included views from 142 chief investment officers, heads of asset classes along with senior portfolio strategists from 85 sovereign wealth funds and 57 central banks.

Amid persistent high inflation and real interest rates, investors are recalibrating portfolios.

Sovereign wealth funds, it said, favour fixed income and private debt, while Emerging Markets (EMs) with solid demographics, political stability, and proactive regulation, particularly India, have emerged as prime investment destinations.

India, it said, exemplifies the attributes sought by sovereign investors. “India has now overtaken China as the most attractive Emerging Market for investing in Emerging Market debt.” A development sovereign fund based in the Middle East noted, “We don’t have enough exposure to India or China. However, India is a better story now in terms of business and political stability. Demographics are growing fast, and they also have interesting companies, good regulation initiatives, and a very friendly environment for sovereign investors.” India is among a number of countries, including Mexico and Brazil, that are benefitting from increased foreign corporate investment aimed at both domestic and international demand through ‘friend-shoring’ and ‘near-shoring’.

This was seen as helping fund current account deficits as well as support currencies and domestic assets including debt.

One central bank based in the West explained that they were looking at increasing their exposure to EM debt and in particular focused on debt targeting real estate and infrastructure as well as other diversified industries.

According to the report, more than 85 per cent of the 85 sovereign wealth funds and 57 central banks noted that inflation will be higher in the coming decade.

In such a situation, gold and emerging market bonds are being seen as good bets. This shift may have been triggered due to the freezing of almost half of Russia’s $640 billion of gold and forex reserves by the West in response to the Ukraine invasion.

The survey showed a “substantial share” of central banks were concerned by the precedent that had been set. Almost 60 per cent of respondents said it had made gold more attractive, while 68 per cent were keeping reserves at home compared to 50 per cent in 2020.

India’s PMI for manufacturing did not contract in the past year, but against expectations, FDI inflows fell 22 per cent to USD 46.03 billion in FY23 amid high inflation and recessionary trends in developed economies.

A lot of importance is given to academics in countries like India. Society believes you are successful if you have an excellent academic background. You are worthy if you have earned various academic degrees with good grades. But what about non-academic areas? What about one's passions?

In today’s Indian society, every student is competing for good grades, ranks, getting into top universities, and getting job placements. At the same time, professionals are in a race to perform the best and gain recognition. But is that really their passion?

These days people care more about financial security than what they are passionate about. While interacting with people, I often observe that only a few professionals are following their dreams, while most are just chasing a ‘reputed job’ and a ‘good pay cheque’.

As a student, I can say that the importance given to good grades is unreasonable and unachievable for many. Students often feel pressured by their families, society, and peers to score well. If they don’t, they are usually looked down upon as not being serious about their future career and even life! It is shocking how failing in studies is often equated with failure in life. After all this, it is not very surprising to see so many students suffering from depression and anxiety, and in some cases in which students have committed suicide.

A lot of students in my class, when asked why they were doing the current course, responded that it was just for a master’s degree, which attracts more value in corporates. Due to academic pressures, we often lose our passion or can’t give them enough time and focus. While my passions are music and writing, I hardly get any time to pursue them while trying to navigate through my academics. During the end of the semester, there is hardly any time to spare, let alone pursue anything else than studies. It is concerning how schools and colleges put pressure on students with tonnes of assignments, projects, and deadlines, which is considered normal.

Academic professions have always been given more importance in our society than vocational professions. If you are an artist, writer, singer, etc. only a few in the community appreciate you. On the other hand, if you are a qualified engineer or a doctor, people will always associate you with intellect and reputation.

The reason for pursuing academics for me, and I’m sure many others, is the risk that comes with vocational areas. Professions like dancing, acting, art, music, sports, etc. do not guarantee a job or financial security. This implies that to pursue a creative passion, most people often also take up an academic course as a backing to help them earn a living while working on their passions, which sometimes work and sometimes don’t.

Creative fields often face a lot more challenges than academics. Some people work hard all their life just to get that recognition among people. Young people who leave academics to pursue their passions are often seen as failures as they couldn’t pursue academics, or get a degree. This all comes back to the vicious cycle that pursuing academics is seen as more reputable than other vocational professions.

Apart from financial security, society plays another part in this. Most people in society tend to be prying upon others and often talk down to those who are not pursuing academics. Such people view reputed and well-earning jobs as a prerequisite for giving respect to others. These fears are enough to make a creative person end up in a profession they are not passionate about for the sake of being respected in society. These conceptions are more prevalent in India than in other countries and lead to increased competition amongst peers.

The change would only come if instead of criticising, we encourage people not to pursue their passions. There is no denying that academics are important, however, not more than your passion. You will never be satisfied in life unless you follow your dreams and aspirations. I would say that there are many facets to success than just academics. You must realise what you love doing, and live your life on your terms.

Should youngsters study what's hot in the market, or follow their passion?

China's equity market continues to face an uphill battle despite efforts by the government to boost growth. Investor confidence remains low. Hopes for a robust economic recovery and a revival of the property market have been replaced by weak sentiment, making it difficult to reverse the downward trend.

China's stimulus efforts fail to boost market confidence

The World Wealth Report 2023 published recently by Capgemini highlights a significant decline in the number of High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs) worldwide. This year's decline in both the number and wealth of HNWIs is the highest recorded in the past decade.

However, amidst this gloomy trend, the report offers positive news for India, emphasising the country's commendable stock market performance.

Key findings of the World Wealth Report 2023

The report reveals that the wealth of HNWIs dwindled over the past year due to various factors such as geopolitical crises, market downturns, rising living costs, and unexpected inflation. Global economic conditions have been impacted by central banks' increasing interest rates, adding further strain.

The corporate sector has experienced earnings setbacks, particularly affecting technology stocks.

Magnitude of decline in HNWIs’ wealth

According to the report, global HNWIs' wealth declined by 3.6 per cent to $83 trillion in 2022, marking the most significant dip between 2013 and 2022. Both diversified investment instruments and equity have experienced declines in HNWIs' wealth. Additionally, the number of HNWIs has also decreased by 3.3 per cent, reaching 21.7 million in 2022.

Notably, the steepest decline was observed in North America. In terms of affluents, North America (46%) and the Asia-Pacific region (32%) account for the largest share of global wealth value and population size.

Untapped potential in affluent segment

Despite holding approximately $27 trillion in assets, representing nearly 32% of total HNWI wealth, about34% of firms are not exploring the potential of this affluent segment, the report reveals.

Positive outlook for India

The report brings good news for India, as the country, along with Indonesia, had a successful year in the Asia Pacific region. India's stock market exhibited notable growth over the past year. The BSE Sensex recorded a year-on-year gain of 4.4%, while Nifty 50 gained 4.3%. Moreover, there has been a relative increase in both the wealth and population of HNWIs in India.

Indian HNWIs thrived: Report

Although the current year has witnessed a decline in HNWIs' wealth, the previous year's Capgemini report, based on 2021 data, highlighted a growth of 10.5% in the HNWI population in India.

This growth translated to a total of 308 Indians entering the ultra-rich category. Globally, in 2021, the number of HNWIs increased by 7.8% to 22.5 million, with an 8% rise in their overall wealth.
