Tensions in India's Mangaluru after killing of man caught on camera

A fire that broke out in an autorickshaw after an explosion in the Kankanadi police station area of Mangaluru&nbsp;was "not accidental" but an "act of terror", said the DGP Karnataka on Sunday.

"It's confirmed now. The blast is not accidental but an ACT OF TERROR with the intention to cause serious damage. Karnataka State Police is probing deep into it along with central agencies," tweeted DGP Karnataka.

The auto driver and a passenger sustained injuries and were admitted to the hospital on Saturday.

The police officials rushed to the spot and are probing the reason behind the explosion and fire.

Karnataka home minister Araga Jnanendra also suspected it to be a terror-related incident.

Citing the incident, Karnataka home minister said that the state police have launched an intensive investigation into the auto-rickshaw blast that took place in Mangaluru.

"Along with the state police, central investigation teams will also join hands. The investigation will proceed swiftly," he said.

"Persons injured in the incident are being given good treatment," he added.

Earlier on Saturday, Commissioner of Police (CP) of Mangaluru City N Shashi Kumar said, "At around 5 pm today, an auto rickshaw caught fire in the Kankanadi Police Station area. The reason behind the fire was a bag being carried by a passenger riding in the auto. The auto driver and passenger sustained burn injuries and have been admitted to the hospital."

CP Kumar further appealed to the local people not to believe any rumours.

"Forensic Science Lab team has been called to probe the reason behind the fire. The public should not pay heed to any rumours," he said.

Further investigation is underway.

'Not accidental but act of terror...,' says DGP Karnataka on Mangaluru autorickshaw blast

A Mumbai-bound Indigo flight was delayed for over six hours after a passenger raised an alarm over a suspicious text message received by a fellow passenger that she had noticed.

According to reports, the incident happened in India’s southern Mangaluru city on Sunday. The woman claimed that she accidentally peeked into the message on the man’s phone and saw the ‘you are a bomber’ on it, following which she raised an alarm and alerted the cabin crew.

The Air Traffic Controller was informed of the matter and the flight was ordered to return to the bay, following which the passengers deboarded the plane and a thorough security check was conducted.

It was later revealed that the message was just a hoax, as the man was busy chatting with his friend—a girl—who was to catch another flight for Bengaluru&nbsp;from the same airport.

The authorities then checked the passengers' baggage again, following which they were allowed to re-board the flight. The plane flight left by 5pm with 185 passengers, excluding the man who received the message, onboard.

While the man was not allowed to take the flight, his friend was called into questioning and as a result she missed her scheduled flight.

Speaking to the Times of India newspaper, Mangaluru police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said that no complaint was filed because the matter was a personal chat between two friends.

Mangaluru Police has arrested eight students of St Aloysius College and produced them before the juvenile justice court after a video went viral on social media where a boy and girl could be seen kissing in a flat while their friends cheered them. All eight have been booked under Sections 4, 8, 12, 13, 17 of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and Sections 66 (E) and 67 of the IT Act.

Reportedly, the 20-second video was filmed a few months ago but was only recently posted on social media platforms. The girl with the ID card visible in the video appears to have lodged a complaint of sexual assault with the police.&nbsp;

Apparently, the girl knew the boys and the other girl present in the apartment. They were playing a game of ‘truth or dare’ in a rented apartment&nbsp;near Light House Hill Road in Mangaluru. However, after the video was filmed, the eight boys allegedly sexually assaulted the two girls, including the girl who kissed the boy.&nbsp;

These boys filmed the sexual acts and continued to threaten the girls. However, after one of the boys, who captured the original video uploaded the clipping on the WhatsApp group of the college, the skeletons started to tumble out of the closet.

The police are also ascertaining if there was involvement of drugs during the incident.&nbsp;“Investigation is underway about whether the students had consumed drugs,” stated Commissioner N Shashi Kumar.&nbsp;

Three people died and as many as 404 cases of dengue and malaria have been detected in Dakshina Kannada district, officials said on Sunday.

Speaking to ANI, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district Sasikanth Senthil said, "Due to the peculiar weather condition in the city, we are seeing a spurt in the cases of fever since July 1. As many as 404 dengue and malaria cases have been detected, of which we've suspected three cases where dengue fatalities occurred."

"In the last three weeks, there is a spike in the number of patients admitted to various hospitals due to viral fever. The blood samples of patients suspected of having dengue have been collected and sent for testing," he added.

Senthil said the district administration and health department have constituted special teams to tackle the situation.

Data compiled by the Health Ministry has revealed that at least 8,058 positive dengue cases with eight deaths, and 14404 cases of Chikungunya have been reported from across the country till June 30 this year.

A total of 66,313 Malaria cases have also been reported from across the country till May 31 this year, according to available data.&nbsp;
