Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his team always believed they could pull off a remarkable comeback against Paris St Germain to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

United lost the first leg 2-0 at Old Trafford but beat the French champions 3-1 in Paris on Wednesday to progress to the last eight on away goals.

"We always believed, that's the thing," Solskjaer told reporters. "We set out the plan and it wasn't about the ball.

"The plan was to get the first goal, be in the game with 10 minutes to go," he added.

Romelu Lukaku put United ahead after two minutes and although PSG equalised, the Belgian grabbed his second before halftime and Marcus Rashford's stoppage-time penalty sealed a famous win.

It continued United's remarkable transformation since Solskjaer took over as interim manager from Jose Mourinho in December and the Norwegian looks increasingly likely to get the job on a permanent basis.

"It's been a fantastic time with the players and staff I got working with me. I'm going to enjoy this job as long as I have it, I'm gonna smile," Solskjaer said.

"The fact we had injuries and suspensions maybe it was a good thing today because we had a fresh team," Solskjaer said.

Rashford held his nerve under intense pressure to convert his first penalty in a competitive match for United.

"Just keep a cool head, you know. They're the type of things you practise every day. I wanted to take it ... we got the goal, and we're progressing," Rashford said.

"That's probably the hardest thing, the wait before, (but) it's all part of the game, those moments, you want to get through those moments," he added.

"Everything seemed to be against us, but we're used to surviving in these moments, and today just proved that one more time. We go forward from this game now, but we can still improve of course, keep pushing and keep bettering ourselves," Rashford added.

Solskjaer, for one, was not surprised how cool the 21-year-old England striker had been under pressure.

"Absolutely fantastic, the kid has got no doubts, when you're young you don't have any fear," he said.

It took the Belgian's tally to four goals in two games after he netted a brace in Wednesday's 3-1 win at Crystal Palace, with playmaker Andreas Pereira grabbing the other for the hosts in a rip-roaring clash at Old Trafford.

The result lifted United back into fourth place on 58 points from 29 games, one ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal who were held to a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in the early kickoff.

Sixth-placed Chelsea, who are on 53 points, have two games in hand and visit second bottom Fulham on Sunday.

Lukaku, who has endured dips in form during what has been a turbulent season at Old Trafford with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking over from Jose Mourinho as caretaker manager in December, was back to his lethal best.

"I was focused on the win and help my team mates," Lukaku told the BBC.

Six minutes later, Pereira released Lukaku with fine footwork and the striker side-stepped a defender before he drilled a low shot with his weaker right foot into the bottom corner of the net.

James Ward-Prowse appeared to have snatched a point for the Saints with a stunning free kick from 25 metres before a frantic finish as Lukaku sent the home crowd into raptures.

A slick move ended with Lukaku turning his marker on the edge of the penalty area and drilling in another right-foot shot into the bottom corner in the 88th minute.

Pogba has rediscovered his form since Solskjaer took charge at as United's interim manager in December following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Having endured a difficult first half the season, the France star has scored nine goals and provided six assists in his last 12 club appearances as United have shot into fourth with Premier League eight wins in nine and reached the FA Cup quarter-finals after convincingly beating Chelsea earlier this month.

"He is a leader in training, he is a leader in the dressing room," Solskjaer said ahead of Sunday's clash at Old Trafford.&nbsp;

"Players are allowed to be themselves. He spends a lot of energy being a leader on and off the pitch."

The midfielder has become as well-known for his colourful hairstyles and his social media posts as for his football skills during his time at Old Trafford.

"If you want the nice car, different haircut, it is not a problem. I can't do anything about my grey hair, but it is not a problem that you have whatever haircut you want," said Solskjaer.

"It has never been a problem with Paul. I remember when he was 16, he wanted to feel good. If you feel good, you will play well."

"Paul has always been a larger-than-life character. But you don't want to give anyone an excuse really, so of course, you don't go to the Brit awards this week," he said.

"We know leading up to the other game against Liverpool there were stories about players not being focused.

"It is not about that. We know they are focused, we know they are doing their best but he does help himself by toning it down a bit ... Knowing him, he wants to win, he wants to be the best."

Saudi Arabia's crown prince is not seeking to buy Premier League football club Manchester United, the kingdom's media minister said on Monday, denying reports and adding that there had only been a meeting with the Saudi wealth fund regarding sponsorship.

Reports that Mohammed Bin Salman intends to buy the club are "completely false", the minister, Turki al-Shabanah, wrote on social network Twitter.

He was reacting to reports that the crown prince had sought to tempt the Glazer family to cede control of the club.

"Manchester United held a meeting with PIF Saudi to discuss (a) sponsorship opportunity," Shabanah said, adding that no deal materialised.

On Sunday, the British newspaper, the Sun, said the crown prince was in a £3.8-billion ($4.9-billion) takeover bid for one of football's most popular clubs.

"I'm a player that, if I'm not in contact with the ball, I lose that spark, and sometimes I want to play in every game. You're in, you're out, and I'm used to playing.

"It's not an excuse because if I go on for 10, 20 minutes, I have to perform because that's what I'm here for, to make a difference."

Speaking on a conference call with investors, Woodward hailed the "fantastic start" under the Norwegian, who set a club record by winning his first eight matches in charge.

But he refused to be drawn on the process of appointing a new permanent boss.&nbsp;

"We communicated around December-time about what we were doing putting Ole in place as a caretaker and the next communication with regard to this will be when we have something to announce regarding the manager," he said. "We're not going to give updates part-way through."

And he was also coy on the club's reported move for a director of football.

"A lot has obviously been written about this.... With regard to the overall structure, we are looking at that and looking at ways that we can make it stronger and that is something we do on a continual basis," he said.

In their earnings report, the club announced record revenues of £208.6 million for the quarter, which translate into earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of £104.3 million and an operating profit of £44 million.

As well as replacing the&nbsp;Mourinho&nbsp;regime with Solskjaer and assistant manager Mike Phelan, the club have recently agreed new contracts with Anthony Martial, Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Scott McTominay.

The club's wage bill for the quarter, which ended on December 31, was £77.9 million, an increase of 11.8 percent on the corresponding period a year ago.

Real Madrid last month knocked Manchester United off the top of Deloitte's Football Money League after two years at the top for the Premier League club.
