Pakistan Army is taking<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/china-silent-over-gen-rawats-remarks-on-pla-troop-reduction-in-dokalam-29018"> help from China to fortify its bunkers</a>&nbsp;along the international border(IB), according to an intelligence report accessed by WION.

Intelligence report points to <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/in-winter-chinese-troops-establish-permanent-base-at-doklam-report-26416">the presence of at least 4 or 5 Chinese personnel</a> in Pakistan&#39;s post at Jannat Gul opposite Bikaner. The report said three Chinese were seen testing surveillance equipment.

It is however not the first time when Chinese engineers were seen with the Pakistan Army at the Indo-Pak border. There were two instances earlier when Chinese nationals were seen at various locations at Pakistan Army posts including Zannat Gul.

According to the intelligence report, in early November last year, Chinese nationals were seen at a Pak Army post from Bahawalpur side carrying surveillance equipment. The Chinese engineers stayed till November 25th, the report added.

With the help of the Chinese Army and their engineers, Pakistan recently completed construction of two underground bunkers sized 12x10x08 feet towards the Bahawalpur side.

The intelligence report said the thickness of new Chinese-made bunker walls was about 18 inches and they were all &quot;high impactable bunkers&quot;.

&quot;These bunkers are also designed very differently with no loopholes. Illumination is done with the help of solar lights. Overhead protection to the bunker is given by a layer of sand,&quot; the report said.

The intelligence report pointed out that these bunkers were being constructed for installation of some &quot;new equipment in the future&quot;.

The report added that the Pakistan Army finds its difficulties to carry out long strategy of &nbsp;Border Action Team (BAT) and sniper attacks by the Indian Army.

Pakistan is also surprised with the way the Indian security forces have been reacting to attacks launched by its Rangers along the Line of Control.

The report said Pakistan&#39;s Inter-Services Intelligence(ISI) is worried over Indian Army&#39;s new military stance of &quot;surgical strikes&quot; across the border aimed at targeting camps.

Also, during ceasefire violations, Pakistan forces have faced massive losses, the report added.

Chinese engineers helping Pakistan to fortify bunkers along international border: Intelligence Report

After <a href="http://www.wionews.com/football/wont-allow-anti-india-activities-in-kashmir-army-chief-29627">General Bipin Rawat indicated that the Indian Army</a> could cross the border to tackle terrorism in J&amp;K, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Major General Asif Ghafoor hit back saying Indian army chief&#39;s statement was &quot;irresponsible&quot; and &quot;unbecoming&quot; of a four-star general.

On the occasion of Army Day, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/gen-rawats-remarks-on-dokalam-unconstructive-china-29595">General Rawat had said that the military</a> was ready to escalate the offensive in J&amp;K to combat cross-border terrorism, in a clear reference to crossing the LoC, asserting&nbsp;&quot;if we are forced, then we may escalate our military action and carry out &#39;other action&#39;.&quot;

In a tit-for-tat response, Ghafoor told Pakistan&#39;s Dawn newspaper: &quot;Should India wish to test our resolve they may try and see it for themselves. We have a credible nuclear capability exclusively meant for threats from the East.&quot;

Pakistan&#39;s military wing added that Pakistan considers its nuclear capability to be a &quot;weapon of deterrence&quot; and not an &quot;option for war&quot;.

&quot;The only thing stopping them is our credible nuclear deterrence as there is no space of war between the two nuclear states,&quot; Ghafoor said, adding,&quot;Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state with a professional army, therefore India must not remain in illusion.&quot;

Pakistan&#39;s foreign ministry in a statement said: &quot;These are not issues to be taken lightly. There must not be any misadventure based on a miscalculation.&quot;

&quot;Pakistan is fully capable of defending itself,&quot; the statement added.

General Rawat had said the Pakistan Army was continuously trying to help terrorists sneak into India along the Line of Control (LoC) in J&amp;K, adding that the Indian Army is using its might &quot;to teach them a lesson.&quot;

Watch: Pakistan troops open fire along LoC, Indian Army retaliates

&nbsp;

Reports are pouring in of the Indian force destroying two Pakistani posts in retaliation for the killing of its jawan in unprovoked firing. The BSF spokesperson said that two Pakistani mortar positions were &quot;located, targeted and destroyed by BSF troopers yesterday night only. The coordinated precision fire of BSF troopers silenced Pakistani guns.&quot;&nbsp;

Prior to this, only weeks ago, Indian security forces in retaliatory action against Pakistan, killed three Pakistani soldiers across the LoC and injured one as per media reports. The backdrop of this action was unprovoked ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the LoC on Saturday, wherein three jawans and one Major of India were martyred. It is obvious that to avoid embarrassment to the Pakistani Army, Pakistan would avoid commenting that the Indian soldiers crossed the LoC.

The ceasefire violations by Pakistan and retaliatory actions by India has been a common feature ever since the truce between both the neighbours along the International Border (IB), Line of Control and the Actual Ground Position Line in Jammu and Kashmir came into force in November 2003.&nbsp;

The violations are mainly concentrated in Jammu and Kashmir which accounts for 221 km of the IB and 740 km of the LoC. The pattern of these violations has some serious strategic indicators.&nbsp;

Earlier, Pakistan used to start the firing along LoC to help the militants to infiltrate, which used to be responded appropriately by Indians. After innocent civilians suffered many casualties, they started preparing bunkers or redesigning their houses to minimise casualties along LoC, and the Indian security forces helped them to do so. Once Pakistanis realised the effect of firing across the LoC, they started firing along IB also, as the Indian population there was less used to firing in that area, the chances of getting casualties of innocent civilians were, therefore, higher.&nbsp;

Pakistan opts to target civilians to achieve greater impact because of sensitivities involved, and blames India to have started the firing first. It knows well that India will respond and the damages done due to response can be highlighted to the world. It will help to claim the status of a helpless country deterred by India, as Pakistan Prime Minister Abbasi, in New York, called India as &ldquo;Existential threat&rdquo;. Indians are not involved in a proxy war, hence, it cannot have any interest to start any cross-border firing. This pattern is continuing for many years now.

Having exhausted all kinds of peace initiatives in past, India tried some innovative ideas to send stronger messages to Pakistan. India decided and carried out surgical strikes on terrorist camps, well inside the Pakistani territory, to stop terrorist activities and proxy war. This was a daring act, which was required, but it has certain implications.&nbsp;

No defence analyst would expect that militancy will end by one such action, hence some militant attacks even after the surgical strikes were expected. It was, therefore, understandable that some more actions like this will be required at various intervals, whenever Pakistan hikes up its militant activities. The action of Indian Security Forces on Monday night needs to be read in that context.

In 2017, over 200 militants have been killed in Kashmir, which is an unprecedented number, indicating Pakistan that their proxy war may not work due to the synergised action of all Indian security forces, NIA, and the government agencies. The only option left for Pakistani Army now is to increase cross-border firing in softer areas (449 in 2016 to 881 in 2017), and increase Border Action Team ( BAT) actions along with militants to cause casualties to security forces and innocent civilians.&nbsp;

In future Indian security forces, as well as, civil population along IB/LoC have to be even more careful to beat Pakistan&rsquo;s design of proxy war and cross-border firing. India will have to be ready for all eventualities within its own comprehensive national power.

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat today said an &quot;aggressive strategy&quot; has to be maintained in dealing with ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and indicated that the force has been responding effectively to such incidents.

He said this responding to a question on the Army&#39;s strategy to deal with repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.

&quot;They are doing it (violating ceasefire), but we are responding to it, but an aggressive strategy has to be maintained (&#39;Wo kar rahe hain, hum bhi kar rahe hain, lekin aggressive strategy to rakhni padegi na),&quot; he told reporters, on the sidelines on an event at the South Block.

According to official figure, a total of 820 incidents of ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops were reported in 2017 as against 221 in the year before.

On the issue of insurgency in several parts of the country, the Army Chief said it is on a decline in the Northeast while in Kashmir it is &quot;cyclical&quot; in nature.

&quot;The moment peace tends to return to the Valley, there is an interference from across the border,&quot; he said.

Earlier, General Rawat interacted with 27 youths from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, who are here as part of a national integration tour.

When one of the youths asked why the Indian Army does not &quot;finish&quot; the Pakistani side, he replied, &quot;If we finish (militarily) Pakistan, it will become like Afghanistan, riddled with all sorts of problems which Afghanistan is today facing.&quot;

Since beginning of the year, the Army pursued an aggressive anti-terror policy in Jammu and Kashmir, at the same time, forcefully responding to all ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control with a tit-for- tat approach.

Rawat also said neighbouring nations have to &quot;learn to live with each other&quot;.

&quot;We want to live in peace. Two neighbours living in a colony, if they have any issue, one of them can choose to move house. But, as nations we can&#39;t do that,&quot; he said.

Aggressive strategy to be maintained with Pak on ceasefire violations: Army chief Rawat

If one were to either listen to the drivel that passes for discussion on Prime Time TV on the question of the recent killing of an Indian Army officer, Major Prafulla, and three jawans of the SIKH Regiment, one could well be forgiven for thinking that we are in the middle of a war with Pakistan. Added to this provocation was the utterly callous, disgraceful and uncivilized manner in which the Pakistan Government treated the mother and wife of the alleged spy, former naval officer, Commander Kulbhushan Jadhav after permitting them to meet him on &ldquo;humanitarian&rdquo; grounds.&nbsp; These have been grounds enough for hawks here to swoop down and publicly demand that Pakistan be taught a &ldquo;lesson.&rdquo; Politicians too, especially from the ruling coalition, have not held back either, with Mr. Subramanium Swamy leading the charge.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Fortunately for us, most of these individuals are ensconced either in climate controlled studios or in Lutyens Delhi, well protected by their personal security of Black Cat Commandos. One can also rest assured that those baying for Pakistani blood are certainly not going to volunteer to lead the next cross-border raid or assault. As a matter of fact, leave them aside, even their own kith and kin are unlikely to be anywhere in the vicinity of our forces, those whom they are so willing to put in harms&rsquo; way.

&nbsp;

&nbsp;Undoubtedly, we have much to be angry with Pakistan about. It&rsquo;s unabated, but wholly unsuccessful, attempts to drag us into the swamp where it wallows is certainly reason enough. Though at the end of the day its schizophrenic and delusional obsession with Jammu and Kashmir has been more damaging to its polity than anything we could have ever done, barring Bangladesh, and that too would not have occurred if they had not been more sensitive and humane in their dealings with their Bengali comrades.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

It is true that Pakistan has provided moral and material support to the Kashmir insurgency. The jihadi elements based there continue to infiltrate terrorists to cause carnage in Jammu and Kashmir and even further afield. Their efforts have actually been just a drop in the ocean with an odd success here and there, resulting more from our own inept handling of our communal environment rather than because of their capability to cause us harm. &nbsp;

&nbsp;

Unfortunately, successes by these terrorist elements have been used by our political leadership to divert attention from their own failures to initiate political, social and economic measures in the state. Such a step would have met the aspirations of the local population and resolved most of the issues that have been troubling us for the past three decades. This, despite the fact that politicians, dyed in all hues, have had ample opportunity to the take the initiative, but have neither displayed the strength of character nor the willingness to take things forward. At the end of the day, the fruits that the business of insurgency provides them are too lucrative to surrender. &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;

That brings us to the ongoing situation at the LOC wherein as a tit- for- tat action, a Pakistan Army link patrol was ambushed by a Border Action Team in response to the attack on the Sikh Battalion.&nbsp; Pakistan suffered three killed and one wounded and on the Indian side, there was the death of one officer and three men. As a matter of fact, this was just a repeat of similar incidents, too innumerable to recount, that have dogged both our Armies ever since the First War of 1948. These actions have little strategic or tactical significance and are routinely carried out by both sides to gain moral and psychological ascendancy over the other side. There is little to cheer over these tragic events, no great leap forward or summit conquered.

&nbsp;

One is, therefore, at a loss to understand what the hoopla is about or the reason for the display of excessive testosterone over the past few days among those who haunt our media channels.&nbsp; If the media is at all serious about its job, it should be questioning our political leadership as to why this unending tragedy has been perpetuated on our forces and people over decades. What have any of our great leaders done, over the years, to resolve this unfortunate state of affairs?&nbsp; How is it that despite agreeing to return 90,000 prisoners in 1971, we were unable to convince Pakistan to amicably resolve a 700 km border?&nbsp;

&nbsp;

It is time to desist being fooled by the unholy exhortations of our leaders to mindless sacrifice, in which neither they nor their kin ever contribute. There is little to cheer over these tragic events, no great leap forward or summit conquered.

If one were to either listen to the drivel that passes for discussion on Prime Time TV on the question of the recent killing of an Indian Army officer, Major Prafulla, and three jawans of the SIKH Regiment, one could well be forgiven for thinking that we are in the middle of a war with Pakistan. Added to this provocation was the utterly callous, disgraceful and uncivilized manner in which the Pakistan Government treated the mother and wife of the alleged spy, former naval officer, Commander Kulbhushan Jadhav after permitting them to meet him on “humanitarian” grounds. These have been grounds enough for hawks here to swoop down and publicly demand that Pakistan be taught a “lesson.” Politicians too, especially from the ruling coalition, have not held back either, with Mr. Subramanium Swamy leading the charge. As a matter of fact, leave them aside, even their own kith and kin are unlikely to be anywhere in the vicinity of our forces, those whom they are so willing to put in harms’ way. Undoubtedly, we have much to be angry with Pakistan about. It’s unabated, but wholly unsuccessful, attempts to drag us into the swamp where it wallows is certainly reason enough. Though at the end of the day its schizophrenic and delusional obsession with Jammu and Kashmir has been more damaging to its polity than anything we could have ever done, barring Bangladesh, and that too would not have occurred if they had not been more sensitive and humane in their dealings with their Bengali comrades. It is true that Pakistan has provided moral and material support to the Kashmir insurgency. The jihadi elements based there continue to infiltrate terrorists to cause carnage in Jammu and Kashmir and even further afield. Opinion: Requiem to the fallen soldier. But why so many deaths?

On December of this year, India was shocked at the audacity of the Pakistani Army; a team crossed over the LoC and carried on an ambush on an Indian Army&rsquo;s patrol, operating in the Keri sector of the 120 Infantry Brigade. They had used landmines and small arms, killing one Major along with four soldiers. These gallant troops came from India&rsquo;s finest regiment and were part of 2 Sikh.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Within 48 hours of this horrific incident, soldiers of the Indian Army crossed the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir&#39;s Rawalkot sector, killing at least four Pakistani personnel on Monday. The cross-LoC raid was meant to avenge the death of four Indian soldiers by Pakistani troops earlier this week. Indian troops penetrated 500 meters across the Line of Control and the modus operandi used was an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) ambush followed by gunfire. Literally replicating the earlier Pakistani action.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

The Line of Control has been witnessing such actions and counter-actions quiet regularly ever since General Kayani started to violate the cease-fire in 2010 that had come into force in 2003 during the regimes of General Musharraf and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

It must be remembered that this cease-fire came into force only when Pakistan realised that it was untenable for her to continue retaliation to Indian Army&rsquo;s artillery duels. Indian army had fired 2.5 lakh shells during the 50-day Kargil conflict and later in the years in the run-up to the cease-fire, we had fired nearly one lakh artillery round against Pakistan. Each round costs around US $ 1000.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Pakistan was forced to retaliate in a good measure too. Though we had our share of losses, both material and human, but the losses suffered by Pakistan was colossal. India could inflict huge damage on Pakistan&rsquo;s military infrastructure along with unbearable economic drain. &nbsp;

&nbsp;

In the crucial time between 2003 to 2010, Pakistanis rebuild their infrastructure and beefed up the ammunition stocks. Now they were ready to meet the Indian army&rsquo;s challenge. While for the Indian Army, the victory was always measured in terms of attaining a moral ascendancy. However, for Pakistani army the victory lies in the ability to rise after each setback and challenge the Indian might.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

This is what Pakistan has been doing ever since they got created in the name of religion. They draw inspiration from the battles Mohammad fought with Meccans. Wherein he had challenged the bigger adversary with a far smaller force and, finally, led his troops to victory after suffering many defeats.&nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp;

For India, it is very much essential to understand the psychology of its adversary. And to counter that, we will have to keep the temperatures high on the border while retaining the initiative. Defensive mindset needs to be shed and more pragmatic approach is the need of an hour. While we may wade through easily being a stronger economy and military power but for Pakistan, it would be untenable as has been seen in the past.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

On the escalatory matrix, we are fighting with our adversary at the lowest level in No War No Peace spectrum of low intensity. We both have similar strengths at this level. In fact, Pakistan fares better as it always takes an initiative while we always react. India must tackle Pakistan at levels where we are more stronger. And our strength lies in long-range,&nbsp; high-tech weaponry and highly trained military. Or else we would continue to bleed under the status quo in this simmering conflict.

India's strength lies in long-range, high-tech weaponry and highly trained military. This is where India must beat Pakistan

Opinion: Why India and Pakistan violate the LoC repeatedly?

Indian Army&#39;s action <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/pakistan-says-three-of-its-soldiers-killed-in-ceasefire-violation-along-line-of-control-27699">across the Line of Control</a> (LoC) on the evening of December 25 which resulted in the killing of three Pakistani soldiers was today described as &quot;selective targeting across the LoC&quot;, a &quot;short-distance raid&quot; and a &quot;localised tactical operation&quot; by highly-placed sources in India&#39;s defence establishment.

It was also acknowledged as a &quot;tit-for-tat&quot; reply for the attack carried out of Pakistan troops on December 23 in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/jk-3-soldiers-killed-in-pakistan-ceasefire-violation-in-keri-27540">Keri sector</a> of Jammu and Kashmir&#39;s Rajouri district in which one Major and three Army jawans were killed. In fact, sources said that Monday&#39;s raid was almost an &quot;exact replica&quot; of the raid conducted by the Pakistani soldiers on December 23.

The Pakistani troops who came under fire were from 59 Balooch Unit of the Rakhchakri Battalion of the Rawalkot Brigade. The engagement with Pakistani troops happened at around 6pm on Monday when a temporary post and a patrol party came under fire from the Indian Army. Firing from both sides continued for a long time even after the raid had ended and the situation continued to be tense in that area.

On Monday evening, first an explosion was conducted 200-300 metres across the LoC and following that the 8-10 member strong Pakistani patrol party came under fire from Indian Army&#39;s Ghatak team. Around four Indian Army troops conducted this raid, sources added.

Sources added that the Pakistani patrol party was probably in this area to lay a counter-ambush. &quot;We were able to locate and target them,&quot; a source said. &quot;The Indian Army will continue to exploit such fleeting opportunities,&quot; the source added.

While initial details suggests that three Pakistani troops got killed and one injured, sources said that intelligence reports indicate that the toll could climb.

Sources also added that this was a localised tactical operation conducted by Indian Army Commanders on the ground and that the decision to conduct this raid was taken at the Brigade/Battalion level.

Newly-appointed <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-pro-democracy-credentials-helped-bajwa-get-army-chief-post-9397">Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa </a>told the national assembly to &quot;mend&quot; ties with India, Pakistan&#39;s Dawn newspaper reported.

&ldquo;The military is ready to back the political leadership&#39;s initiative for normalisation of relations with arch-rival India,&rdquo; General Bajwa told lawmakers at the Senate committee of Pakistan on Tuesday.

General Bajwa reportedly told the parliamentary forum that &quot;relations with all neighbours had to be normalised&quot;&nbsp;while urging political leaders &quot;to try to improve relations with India&quot;.

Bajwa, however, also added that a large part of Indian military deployments was mostly against Pakistan, even though it cited other threats, Dawn said, adding, that India was fomenting &quot;instability and terrorism in Pakistan&quot; and had developed a strong &quot;nexus with Afghan intelligence agency NDS&quot;, the report said.

India and Pakistan have been exchanging heavy fire along the border in the past two months even as both sides decided to not to engage in gunfire.

Bajwa, who was appointed by ousted Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was an infantry officer and had commanded Pakistan army&#39;s 10 Corps which is&nbsp;responsible for guarding the area along the Line of Control (LoC) with India.

Bajwa is the fourth officer from the infantry&#39;s Baloch Regiment to become the army chief.

In a move that has led to some <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/will-repeat-surgical-strikes-if-pakistan-continues-to-send-terrorists-indian-army-chief-20650">degree of consternation in India&#39;s defence establishment</a>, some personnel from the Army Service Corps (ASC) have said that since they are &ldquo;non-combatants&rdquo; they should not be considered for posting in field areas.

In response, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/for-first-time-indian-army-to-take-in-women-soldiers-20010">the Indian Army has stated that it was never</a> in dispute that all arms and services are &ldquo;combatants&rdquo; and at no stage has the Army referred to Service Units being non-combatant units.

&ldquo;Army performs its role in war and peace as a whole and not in isolated compartments. Each Arm and Service has designated role and function,&rdquo; the Army said after the matter cropped up during the recently held Army Commanders Conference.

The roots of this controversy lie in a bitter career progression battle that has been ranging on between the various entities that function under the Combat Arms, Combat Support Arms and Services categories.

Several personnel working with Services like the Armed Service Corps, Ordnance, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers have now started complaining that their career progression is not at par with their counterparts in Combat Arms like Infantry, Armoured and Mechanized.

And to take the&nbsp;argument further, the aggrieved personnel have stated that since they are being treated as &ldquo;non-combatants&rdquo;, they should be not posted in combat duties in field postings.

The Army, on its part, has maintained that Combat Arms, Combat Support Arms and Services are &ldquo;operational entities&rdquo; of Army having &ldquo;clear and defined roles with charter of duties&rdquo;.

The Army has also maintained consistently that without diluting the role played by Services in maintaining logistic support to Combat Arms during operations, Commanding Officers of ASC, Ordnance and Electronics and Mechanical Engineers are not required to largely remain in contact with frontline forces where major combat may take place during operations.

&ldquo;Therefore, ages of Command of Services could be higher than those of arms, where COs are expected to move forward in the combat zone, where their physical efficiency becomes relevant,&rdquo; the Army has said.

The Army also says that a number of Officers, JCOs and Other Ranks from Combat Support Arms and logistic units are posted on tenure basis in infantry units dealing with counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism in a bid to boost the strength essential in &ldquo;Line of Control, Low-Intensity Conflict, Counter-Insurgency and Counter-Terrorist environment&rdquo;.

&ldquo;This also provides much necessary operational experience to these Officers, JCOs and Other Ranks,&rdquo; the Army has stated adding that performance of personnel from Services has been &ldquo;noteworthy&rdquo;.

Army sources say that around 20 years back, the career progression of personnel working in Services was far better than those working in Combat Arms and that the cream of the personnel used to opt to Services and not Combat Arms.

&ldquo;This had led to a situation where it became difficult to keep the motivational levels high for infantry personnel who are supposed to go to the battle zone and take bullets for you,&rdquo; a source explained. &ldquo;It was then that the system realized that the handle of the axe had got converted to iron while the bladed head had become of wood. A force needs to keep the sharpness of the weapon intact. That&#39;s why policies were made to ensure that personnel who were fighting the country&#39;s battles continue to be motivated,&rdquo; the source added.

The Army maintains that in correcting an earlier anomalous situation, some new issues may have got created but Chief of Army Staff Bipin Rawat has already said that he would &ldquo;consider all arms and services at par and they would get their dues that they deserve&rdquo;.

The Army has also assured of all necessary corrections to put to rest all anguish amongst some personnel regarding discrimination in their status.

All arms and services are 'combatants', says the Indian Army as the bitter career progression battle in the Indian army comes out in the open

In a move that has led to some degree of consternation in India's defence establishment, some personnel from the Army Service Corps (ASC) have said that since they are “non-combatants” they should not be considered for posting in field areas. In response, the Indian Army has stated that it was never in dispute that all arms and services are “combatants” and at no stage has the Army referred to Service Units being non-combatant units. “Army performs its role in war and peace as a whole and not in isolated compartments. Each Arm and Service has designated role and function,” the Army said after the matter cropped up during the recently held Army Commanders Conference. And to take the argument further, the aggrieved personnel have stated that since they are being treated as “non-combatants”, they should be not posted in combat duties in field postings. The Army, on its part, has maintained that Combat Arms, Combat Support Arms and Services are “operational entities” of Army having “clear and defined roles with charter of duties”. “Therefore, ages of Command of Services could be higher than those of arms, where COs are expected to move forward in the combat zone, where their physical efficiency becomes relevant,” the Army has said. The Army also says that a number of Officers, JCOs and Other Ranks from Combat Support Arms and logistic units are posted on tenure basis in infantry units dealing with counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism in a bid to boost the strength essential in “Line of Control, Low-Intensity Conflict, Counter-Insurgency and Counter-Terrorist environment”. “This also provides much necessary operational experience to these Officers, JCOs and Other Ranks,” the Army has stated adding that performance of personnel from Services has been “noteworthy”. Army sources say that around 20 years back, the career progression of personnel working in Services was far better than those working in Combat Arms and that the cream of the personnel used to opt to Services and not Combat Arms. “This had led to a situation where it became difficult to keep the motivational levels high for infantry personnel who are supposed to go to the battle zone and take bullets for you,” a source explained. “It was then that the system realized that the handle of the axe had got converted to iron while the bladed head had become of wood. A force needs to keep the sharpness of the weapon intact. That's why policies were made to ensure that personnel who were fighting the country's battles continue to be motivated,” the source added. The Army maintains that in correcting an earlier anomalous situation, some new issues may have got created but Chief of Army Staff Bipin Rawat has already said that he would “consider all arms and services at par and they would get their dues that they deserve”. The Army has also assured of all necessary corrections to put to rest all anguish amongst some personnel regarding discrimination in their status.

On Tuesday, three Jaish-E-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists had entered into a Border Security camp (BSF) camp in Srinagar and killed one soldier.

A nine-hour gunbattle resulted in all three Jaish terrorists being killed but authorities suspect there is still another JeM cadre - the fourth terrorist- roaming free in the Valley, plotting another fidayeen attack.

A total of 228 ceasefire violations occurred in 2016 along the Line of Control in Jammu &amp; Kashmir, an area which is under the operational control of the Indian Army.

This year, till October 3, the number of such violations had already more than doubled to 503.

That translates roughly to around 56 violations a month on average, or almost two a day.

In fact, last year&rsquo;s total figure of 228 ceasefire violations was crossed this year in July itself, underlining the frequency with which Pakistan has engaged in unprovoked firing in violation of the 2003 Ceasefire Understanding between it and India.&nbsp;
