J&K: Pakistan violates ceasefire in Bhimber Gali sector, Indian Army retaliates

The United Nations has dismissed Pakistan Army's claim that its military observers came under attack from Indian troops near the Line of Control, saying there was "no evidence" of them being targeted.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres' spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said there was no evidence that an UNMOGIP (United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan) vehicle was targeted by the Indian Army along the LoC near the Khanjar sector.

"I can say to you that this afternoon in Bhimber District, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, UNMOGIP military observers accompanied by Pakistani Army escorts heard gunshots in their vicinity. There is no evidence that the UNMOGIP military observers were targeted by the gunfire. No UN military observer was injured," he told reporters yesterday.

In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces, had said that a vehicle carrying two officers of the UN military observer group came under attack by Indian troops during a visit to the LoC.

The Pakistan Army had claimed the vehicle was carrying UNMOGIP officers Major Emmanual of the Philippines and Major Mirko of Croatia.

Asked about the increasing tension between the south Asian neighbours and whether the UN secretary-general will look into the situation, Dujarric reiterated, "we're obviously concerned at the situation in Kashmir, and it's an issue that the secretary-general is following closely."

According to the UN Security Council mandate of 1971, UNMOGIP observes and reports on ceasefire violations along and across the LoC and the Working Boundary between India and Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as reports developments that could lead to ceasefire violations.

India has maintained that UNMOGIP has outlived its utility and is irrelevant after the Simla Agreement and the consequent establishment of the Line of Control.

The observer group is headed by Major Gen Per Lodin of Sweden. It currently has 38 military observers and 73 civilian personnel.

The same day terrorists opened fire on a patrol party of the Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir's Tral

Two persons were killed and three injured when Pakistani army fired mortar bombs and automatic weapons along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district today. The same day terrorists opened fire on a patrol party of the Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir's Tral. The entire area has been cordoned off as the Army is sweeping the area for the presence of untoward elements. The security forces were patrolling the Seer village of Tral when unidentified militants opened fire on them, triggering a brief gunfight, a police official said. There was no immediate report of any casualty, he said, adding that a cordon and search operation has been launched to track the militants. The Indian Army is retaliating "strongly and effectively", PRO Ministry of Defence, Jammu, Lt Col Manish Mehta told PTI, adding that the firing was continuing when reports last came in. "Pakistani Army initiated indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatic weapons, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars from 0715 hours along the Line of Control (LC) in Nowshera sector," Lt Col Mehta said. "Two persons have been killed and three others injured in the firing and shelling by Pakistani Army along LoC in Nowshera belt," Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Rajouri Shahid Iqbal Choudhary told PTI. Over 100 more people have migrated to safer places from five hamlets near the LoC which have been targeted, the DC said. Pakistani troops are targeting Jangarh, Bhawani, Laam belts, officials said. The shelling in Rajouri is the third ceasefire violation by Pakistan in as many days. Earlier, a woman died and three persons were injured in firing and shelling by Pakistani troops. A BSF man had suffered minor injury when Pakistani Rangers yesterday violated the ceasefire along International Border. On May 10th and 11th, Pakistani troops fired mortar shells on civilian areas near the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir, killing a woman and injuring two people. In the wake of the Pakistani action in Nowshera tehsil of Rajouri district, schools in the area were closed down on May 11 and 12th . Serving the nation selflessly was a dream for Rohit Yadav. But disgusted with the way the Border Security Force (BSF) has hounded his father Tej Bahadur after he released a video alleging bad quality rations, this 17-year-old does not want to have anything to do with the armed forces.

"It is an open secret. The food the soldiers get is unpalatable, yet they endure it for the love of the nation. One could easily dismiss Rohit's decision as just one of the many sons of a soldier who has chosen not to follow the family path. But the Yadav family is just not any family. Its forefathers can be traced back as soldiers to the 1857 Mutiny and the Independence struggle. Indeed, before the video, serving the nation was an automatic choice. 15 Pakistan Rangers killed in firing along border: India's Border Security Force

At least 250 militants from three jihadist groups, believed to be operating from Pakistan, are hiding in Kashmir and waiting to launch more attacks, top Indian government sources said.

Security has been beefed up along the Indian side of the Line of Control (a de facto border separating India and Pakistan) and the international border. But security gaps remain due to rough topography of the region.

Intelligence reports suggest that more terrorists are planning to infiltrate Kashmir using different entry points, including from Jammu.

The Indian government has instructed all security forces in India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir to be alert to any possible infiltration attempts.

At least 250 militants hiding in Kashmir to launch attacks: India

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in an emergency cabinet meeting held today said Islamabad was ready to counter any external threat.

The meeting was held to discuss the situation in Kashmir and the cross-border firing along the Line of Control (LoC) with India.

Sharif called the attack at the LoC "unprovoked and naked aggression" of Indian forces.

"No external force has the capability or capacity to challenge the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Pakistan," he was reported as saying.

Pakistan’s foreign secretary had also earlier summoned the Indian High Commissioner and urged the Indian government "to ensure the safety and security of Pakistan's High Commissioner, other officials and their families, in accordance with the Vienna Convention".

The cabinet condemned “unprovoked firing at the LoC” which claimed the lives of two Pakistani soldiers, Pakistan media reports said.

The Indian Army said it carried out surgical strikes at the LoC on Thursday in response to the attack on an Indian Army base in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, that killed 19 soldiers earlier this month.

The strikes had been based on "specific credible information" that militants were planning to carry out strikes in Indian cities, including Jammu, Lieutenant General Ranbir Singh of the Indian Army told reporters on Thursday.

But Pakistan has denied India conducting any surgical strikes on their soil.

Islamabad says there was a cross-border "skirmish" between the Indian Army and Pakistan Rangers that killed two of their soldiers.

Pakistan also claimed that they captured one of the Indian soldiers during the exchange over the border.

But New Delhi said the soldier had "inadvertently crossed" over to the other side of the LoC and not captured by Pakistan.

Pakistan Defence recently tweeted that the Indian establishment was nervous that the captured soldier would expose India's 'surgical strikes claim.

Pakistan's federal cabinet condemned India's 'unprovoked firing at the LoC' which claimed the lives of two Pakistani soldiers on Thursday
