Russia has sent twenty warships including support vessels for the exercise along with the frigate "Marshal Shaposhnikov". The Russian navy will also showcase the Tu-142mz long-range anti-submarine aircraft during the exercise.

The Russian defence military's move comes as NATO launched one of its biggest air and missile exercise named “At-Sea-Demo/Formidable Shield” involving ten nations off Norway and Scotland last month.

NATO said part of the exercise was to 'detect and track' missiles at 20,000 km per hour.

"Ships will also defend against an array of anti-ship and other sub and supersonic missiles," NATO declared.

The NATO exercise ended on June 3 as several nations including France, Germany, Italy, UK, the US and Belgium took part.

Russia expels diplomats from Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia 

NATO member Lithuania has blocked the use of airport security-screening equipment made by a Chinese company over national security concerns.

The move came amid increased concern in the West over Chinese investments in critical infrastructure, including 5G telecommunications networks.

A government-appointed commission concluded that the equipment from China's Nuctech "does not meet national security interests," a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte told AFP.

Jakilaitiene declined to elaborate, saying that information provided by state agencies was classified.

Nuctech had been keen to bid for contracts for screening equipment at Lithuanian airports.&nbsp;

The Wall Street Journal reported last year that US agencies were rallying European governments to exclude Nuctech from installing systems at airports across Europe.

The United States has also described another major Chinese technology company, 5G network maker Huawei, as a "threat to national security" and "beholden to the Chinese Communist Party".

These allegations have been denied by Huawei and Chinese diplomats.

Amidst the turmoil after the recent controversial elections in Belarus&nbsp;after which Alexander Lukashenko was announced as victorious, opposition leader of the country&nbsp;Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya had to take refuge in Lithuania.&nbsp;

Speaking exclusively to our&nbsp;Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal,&nbsp;Julius Pranevicius also spoke on ties with New Delhi saying,"India was always a good friend and partner in Asia, South Asia and it remains as such."&nbsp;

Approximately, one thousand&nbsp;Indian students are in the country making it the largest group of foreign students in Lithuania. Interestingly, lot of linguistic similarities between Lithuanian and Sanskrit exist, so much so that a common dictionary also exists.

WION: How do you see the ties between India and Lithuania?&nbsp;

Julius Pranevicius: We are in the process of constructing a new government and we expect it will start functioning either later this week or next week. We will have the most gender balance and the youngest government in the history of our country and exceptional in the region. 9 of the ministers are younger than 40 years, and in government, including the PM we have 7 women, and 8 men. I don't expect any major changes in our polices. India was always a good friend and partner in Asia, South Asia and it remains as such. Most of our, people in our new government have knowledge and have been here. Like our next minister of economy, she visited India. I expect, it will form a good basis of good cooperation and high level visits, as well as exchange between business delegation and increased interest between students and universities that help in building ties.&nbsp;

WION: Any areas of collaboration?

Julius Pranevicius: Students from India are the biggest group of foreign students in Lithuania. We have 1000 students from India studying in our different universities, mostly they do engineering, IT or medicine. They are happy with level of education they get in Lithuania. They're also happy with living condition in our country and still the cost of education is not high. Clear focus of our new govt is to improve further the education system, particularly improve the level of our universities. Lithuania will become an attractive place for young people in India. Natural sectors in which we can cooperate, I&nbsp;would start with, IT. India is well known name in Lithuania, we have companies like HCL, they are important player in our IT sector. They have an office and more than 1000 people working for them. They are not only covering Lithuania but broader European region from the office in our country. Digitization of our economy, is focus of the government, that opens opportunities for companies like HCL and others to follow. Biotech is another area where we might see more cooperation happening. In Lithuania, we are enjoying fast growing biotech sector. Every year, we see huge increase in our biotech outcome and 5% of our GDP can soon be coming from life science sector. That is based on our educational system and another opportunity for big Pharma companies from India to come.

WION: India is increasing its engagement with Nordics and Baltics. How can Lithuania play a role in it?

Julius Pranevicius:&nbsp;We are really happy with the cooperation happening now with the India and broader Nordic and Baltic region. I see that we as a bloc&nbsp;could easily be a very good partner with India, when you look at partners for very good innovative solutions. That is the region known for niche production of things. Lithuania can offer financial technologies... If you look at Europe, our country is emerging as a hub. With UK leaving EU, and more and more interest from different companies in Europe for financial technologies they choose Lithuania as the gateway to EU. The model can be used by Indian companies. Other niche areas are ;aser industry. We are a small country, but we're&nbsp;known for laser industry. 10% of all scientific lasers are produced in Lithuania, that is enormous for country the size of Lithuania. It could be done with Indian companies. Lithuanian satellites have been launched from India and increased cooperation in the very fast growing&nbsp; satellite sector in your country.

WION: Your language has lot of common words with Sanskrit. Study of Indian languages (mainly Hindi and Sanskrit) has been carried out at the Vilnius University for several decades. Any plans to increase engagement on that?

Julius Pranevicius:&nbsp;We have a dictionary we have produced, it has Lithuanian and Sanskrit words that sound exactly the same and we have a whole book on it. It proves we have lot of things in common and not many people know, and still many theories to explain. My native language, one of the oldest language in the region. It is very well preserved, that our ancestors spoke the same language, words, expression as we do. It's a promising and interesting area&nbsp;of research for those doing [sic] in languages, culture. That is why India is so important for us. We have Indology Centre&nbsp;at our university, which is very popular. Indian soft power resonates very well with Lithuanian mind and interest.

WION: How do you see the situation in Belarus?&nbsp;You had&nbsp;hosted the opposition leader, called for EU sanction, what was the rationale?

Julius Pranevicius:&nbsp;With Belarus, we have lot of things in common, we share common history, once we were part of same grand Duchy of Lithuania. The feelings between the people are very close. We understand each other very well, and we feel not just neighbours but more like brothers sometimes. Recent elections are not recognised by my government either and it is very natural, people were upset, the way elections happened and they went out in the streets and that what happened in the country. This is what happens everywhere when people are fighting for freedoms. I think, it is very important for everyone in the world, not just in our region, to show solidarity with Belarusian people and to say the right thing to stand for your freedom. No one will do it for you, you have to do itself. I am thrilled to look how brave the people are, every Saturday and Sunday you have huge rallies, thousands of people who go out in the streets, despite the severe cruel measures taken by people in power. People go to street, to change lives, to live in democracy, in freedom.

WION: What do you think about ties with Russia, and Russia's role in the region?

Julius Pranevicius:&nbsp;For us, we don't have any doubts and dilemmas. We are there, members of NATO and EU. We rely and our security depend on NATO, our joint actions taken with our partners. It's worth mentioning the threats that arise sometimes from what Russia is doing in the neighbourhood, we have bad examples in Ukraine, we have bad examples in Georgia, we see bit of it also in Belarus. It proves that for us, who were cautious about relationship with Russia--we proved to be right. It is now more and more understood by our NATO partners and Nato standing firm and strong to support all its members including Lithuania in organising a defence and being in the alliance, block that would be to difficult to attack and too dangerous to intervene in. That where we base our security, that is where our strategic interest is, and our policies aim too.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said on Thursday that Belarus needs to close its borders with Poland and Lithuania, and strengthen border controls with Ukraine.

Belarus has been in a political crisis following an August 9 presidential election marred by vote-rigging allegations that led to mass demonstrations against Lukashenko.&nbsp;

Lukashenko says he won re-election fairly and is the victim of a smear campaign by the West.

“We are compelled to withdraw our troops from the streets, have half our army on guard and close our state border with the West, first of all with Lithuania and Poland,” Lukashenko said in a speech at a women’s forum in Minsk.&nbsp;

“To our greatest regret, we are compelled to strengthen our border with brotherly Ukraine.”

Lukashenko’s announcement comes as the United States and a slew of European countries have stepped up scrutiny of Belarus over alleged irregularities in the country’s August election and repression of protests since.

To this end, Polish deputy foreign minister Pawel Jablonski told Reuters by text message: “We take this as another element of the propaganda campaign, a psychological game which aims to create a sense of an external threat.”

Lithuanian border guard chief Rustamas Liubajevas said the border there was also operating as usual.

Meanwhile, Denmark said on Thursday that seventeen members of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have appointed an independent team of experts to investigate alleged rights violations in the August presidential election.

The mission is expected to publish a report within six to eight weeks.

It will investigate reports of persecution of candidates, journalists and activists as well as excessive use of force against peaceful protesters, illegal detention and torture.

Speaking on a visit to Washington, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said he believed the game plan of Lukashenko and his main backer, Russian President Vladimir Putin, was to “try to sit this out”.

Minsk prevented the deployment of OSCE election observers by not inviting them, and has ignored repeated offers by the OSCE chairman, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, to visit.

Laimonas Talat Kelpsa: We need to give credit that Hindi is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. One billion people have Hindi as their official and native language and looking into the future, we have to accept this fact and learn in advance for the world which is coming. Another reason is that Lithuanian and Hindi have a close connection. Both our languages originate from&nbsp;Sanskrit. We have words that sound identical.&nbsp;

WION: What are the common words between Hindi &amp; Lithuania...if you give an example?

Laimonas Talat Kelpsa: We can make comparisons. In Hindi we have Vayu, in Lithuanian we have Vayas. Deva in Hindi, we say Devas. Agni in Hindi, we say ugnis for fire. Shakha means branch of a bank which means the same in Hindi and Lithuanian. Every layer of society from the human body to students to religion to the social aspect, you will find common sounding words.

WION: So how did the common connect happen? You are in northern Europe and we here in South Asia...

Laimonas Talat Kelpsa: Why is that so, its a mystery. Linguistic are building theories and trying to verify them. It is how the connection happened. The research is on for the last two hundred years.

Probably, our forefathers at some point lived in the same territory, part of them migrated south to India, other part migrated north to Lithuania. Realy unique, our language has remained rather intact and have connections which are recognisable.

French researchers have said, if you want to learn how Indian people speak, how Sanskrit is spoken, you go to a Lithuanian village and see how a peasant speaks.&nbsp;

WION: How do you see ties between both countries?

Laimonas Talat Kelpsa: We believe India is playing an increasingly important role. Lithuania, which is a member of NATO and EU, we understand we need to redefine our ties with countries in Asia including India.

From this perspective, we have a good starting point, no recognizable differences, we have so many similarities we share. The linguistic similarity is one thing, we have historical connect as well.

The first Lithuanian visited India 400 years ago and we would be soon celebrating the occasion. Our independence movement 30 years ago was inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, so we believe, we have a huge potential.

Naidu is on a three-nation visit to the Balkan nations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. He arrived in Lithuania on Saturday on the first leg of his visit.

Lithuania has also backed India to have permanent membership in an expanded and reformed UN Security Council.

He did not rule out early elections. The next regularly-scheduled parliamentary elections are due in October 2020.

Although Lithuanian presidents do not directly craft economic policy, bread and butter issues and tackling corruption have dominated the campaign.&nbsp;

Simonyte, who is popular with wealthy, educated urban voters, garnered 31.13 per cent of the vote compared to 30.95 for Nauseda who advocates a welfare state, full official results showed early on Monday.

Skvernelis whose populist approach resonated with the rural poor took 19.72 per cent of the vote contested by a total of nine candidates.

Simonyte told supporters she would resist "populism" during her second-round campaign and seek support from political forces "with consistent views that do not try to be on the right with one leg and the left with the other."

Simonyte, 44, a technocrat who also warns against deepening inequality and the rural-urban divide, has vowed to reduce it by boosting growth further.&nbsp;

Socially liberal, Simonyte supports same-sex partnerships which still stir controversy in the predominantly Catholic country.

Economist Nauseda is campaigning on promises of seeking political middle-ground and build a welfare state.

"I want to thank all the people who took to their hearts our message that we want a welfare state in Lithuania and we want more political peace," Nauseda told reporters in Vilnius as results rolled in.

The 54-year-old former banking consultant is seeking to bridge the growing rich-poor divide in the former Soviet republic of 2.8 million people, which joined the European Union and NATO in 2004.

"Nauseda has a greater chance to attract votes that went to other candidates, especially from the left," Vilnius University analyst Ramunas Vilpisauskas told AFP.

Both Nauseda and Simonyte are strong supporters of EU and NATO membership as bulwarks against neighbouring Russia, especially since Moscow's 2014 military intervention in Ukraine.

Lithuanian presidents steer defence and foreign policy, attending EU and NATO summits, but must consult with the government and the prime minister on appointing the most senior officials.

Popular incumbent President Dalia Grybauskaite, an independent in her second consecutive term, must step down due to term limits.

The politician nicknamed the "Iron Lady" for her strong resolve has been tipped as a contender to be the next president of the European Council.

'Risk of poverty'&nbsp;

Analyst Vilpisauskas said that both Nauseda and Simonyte are very likely to opt for continuity in foreign and defence policy.

"With Nauseda, there can be some tactical changes when it comes to communication with neighbours but the strategical line is unlikely to change."

Lithuania is struggling with a sharp decline in population owing to mass emigration to Western Europe by people seeking better opportunities.&nbsp;

The global financial crisis triggered a deep recession 10 years ago and austerity measures imposed to prevent further crisis took a high toll, especially on low-income earners.

Despite solid economic growth, a recent EU report noted that almost 30 per cent of Lithuanians "is at risk of poverty or social exclusion" and that this risk is "nearly double" in rural areas.

Robust annual wage growth of around 10 per cent has raised the average gross monthly salary to 970 euros ($1,100) but poverty and income inequality remain among the highest in the EU, largely due to weak progressive taxation.

Unemployment stood at 6.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2019, and the economy is forecast to grow by 2.7 per cent this year, well above an average of 1.1 per cent in the 19-member eurozone.

Brussels has urged Vilnius to use solid growth fuelled mostly by consumption to broaden its tax base and spend more on social policies.

Pro-European Union rivals vye to become Lithuania's next president

Two people were killed and many others injured after a train derailed in the north of Italy close to Turin, Italian media said.

The incident occured late Wednesday when the train hit a large truck that had stopped on a level crossing, causing three carriages to come off the rails, according to television footage.

"At 11.20 pm (2120 GMT) the regional train 10027 Turin-Ivrea hit a heavy goods vehicle that had stopped on a functioning level crossing after crashing through the barriers," RFI, which manages Italy's rail network, said in a statement.

"According to early information, the driver of the train was killed and many other passengers have been injured," the statement added.

According to the AGI news agency, the second victim was taken to a Turin hospital by helicopter with severe injuries but he did not survive.

Another passenger, a woman, is in a serious condition after sustaining a head injury but she remains conscious, AGI reported.

According to La Stampa newspaper, witnesses said the vehicle, which was registered in Lithuania, looked to be a particularly large and heavy truck.
