"There are an estimated 150-plus houses now buried, and 670-plus people are assumed dead," said Serhan Aktoprak, UN migration agency official.

The UN migration agency (IOM), on Sunday, said that the landslide buried more than 100 houses, an elementary school, small businesses and stalls, a guesthouse, and a petrol station.&nbsp;

Steven Kandai, a community leader at the scene, told news agency AFP,&nbsp;“All of a sudden there was a big landslip. The mountain just collapsed all of a sudden while people were still sleeping." Their homes were “completely buried", he further said.&nbsp;

“At this time, we are still searching for bodies who are buried by the massive landslide,” said community leader Mark Ipuia, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;

“There are a lot of houses under the debris that cannot be reached,” a United Nations official based in the capital Port Moresby, Serhan Aktoprak, told AFP on Saturday morning, adding that around 3,000 people called the hillside settlement home.&nbsp;

He added, “The land continues to slide and move, and that makes it dangerous for people to operate.”&nbsp;

Prime Minister James Marape, as per Reuters said disaster officials, the Defence Force and the Department of Works and Highways were assisting with relief and recovery efforts.

The landslide has since blocked highway access, making helicopters the only way to reach the site, reported ABC News.&nbsp;

AFP citing aid agencies said that the catastrophe had effectively wiped out the village’s livestock, food gardens and sources of clean water.

Images from the site show a massive chunk of the densely vegetated Mount Mungalo was gone, while barefoot workers used shovels, axes and improvised tools to loosen and shift the earth.&nbsp;

Dozens of locals reportedly scrambled over the piles of rock and soil looking for survivors. &nbsp;

The house was undergoing renovation and&nbsp;was left in ruins, with most of its roof collapsed. It was not the only property affected, several others were also significantly damaged.

As per The Guardian, the landslide happened just before 3 am in the Sherman Oaks area located about 19&nbsp;km (12 miles) northwest of downtown.

Aerial footage from news helicopters revealed the extent of the damage caused by the landslide.&nbsp;

The force of the landslide reportedly also pulled the pool and deck away from one house, while leaving another residence's pool teetering on the edge of a large fissure.

As per the report, an initial search found no victims, but as a precautionary measure, some residents from one of the affected houses were evacuated, said the Los Angeles Fire Department.

While the exact cause of the landslide remains unknown, it is speculated that the series of heavy winter storms that have saturated the ground in southern California may have contributed to the event.&nbsp;

Earlier in February, in a similar occurrence,&nbsp;a mudslide&nbsp;in the Beverly Crest neighbourhood of Los Angeles left&nbsp;several cars buried in mud.

Since the beginning of the year, downtown LA has experienced nearly double its average rainfall—totalling almost 16 inches (40.64 cm) by early February. The heightened rainfall has led to a number of mudslides and structural concerns, prompting authorities to red-tag 16 buildings as unsafe and yellow-tagging over 30 others, restricting access to them.

While the immediate threat has been addressed, there remains a possibility of additional rainfall over the weekend, as forecasted by the National Weather Service.

Officials are currently assessing the risk to other homes in the neighbourhood, and evaluating the potential for further landslides.&nbsp;

In conversation with KTLA5 News, fire department captain Cody Weireter emphasised the importance of monitoring the situation closely to ensure the safety of residents.

"Obviously, the risk is there … We’re at a static situation where it’s not really moving at this point," he said.

Toronto and Denver-based SSR Mining holds 80 per cent of Anagold, with the rest held by Turkish company Lidya.

The mine, which employs 667 people, closed for a few months after a 2022 cyanide leak caused by a burst pipe but then re-opened after its operator paid a fine, prompting outcries from Turkey's opposition parties.

Security footage showed a giant mound of soil, which authorities said had been processed for gold and piled on the hills, rapidly crumble and flow into the valley in a deluge of earth and rocks, sending clouds of dust into the air.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said 400 search and rescue workers were looking for the missing miners.

Macapili said over 300 people were involved in the rescue, but operations were being hampered by heavy rain, thick mud and the threat of further landslides. Rescue work resumed on Sunday morning, Macapili said.

Asked if there were still survivors, Macapili said it was already "unlikely", but the search would continue.

"The rescue team is doing its best, even if it's very difficult," Macapili said by phone.

"The roads remain impassable, and there is no cellphone signal in the area," the military's Eastern Mindanao Command said on Facebook Wednesday.&nbsp;

She also ordered the deployment of national security forces to help rescue efforts. “We are very shocked by this event,” said Hassan&nbsp;in a video message posted online by the Tanzanian Ministry of Health.

The adverse weather has also damaged infrastructure, reported BBC. The country’s meteorology agency has warned that the rains will continue this month after weeks of downpours across the country in November.

Incessant rains continue to wreak havoc in parts of Himachal Pradesh, resulting in damage to buildings and properties. On Tuesday, 5 to 7 houses collapsed in Shimla’s Krishna Nagar area following a landslide. According to officials, some residents were feared trapped in the debris, and NDRF, SDRF, and state police personnel were leading the rescue operations. 
 
“Our primary focus is to rescue more and more people. One casualty has been reported so far. All agencies are working to save lives.&nbsp;About 10-15 houses have been vacated and the occupants shifted to safe places. The loss of property is yet to be ascertained," Shimla SP Sanjeev Gandhi said earlier.

At least 55 lives have been lost across Himachal in the ongoing rain fury, which has triggered landslides, cloudbursts, and road blockades.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu held a meeting with the high-powered committee on Tuesday for further intensification of disaster management efforts. He said a 157-per cent surge in rainfall over the past four days has resulted in extensive damage across the entire state.

He added that his government was fully committed to expediting restoration efforts on a priority basis. He said about 400 out of a total of 1,220 blocked roads have been restored to their normal state. The CM also issued directives to swiftly reinstate the electricity and water schemes that have been adversely affected.

"Due to the urban expansion of Shimla, torrential rains have led to the uprooting of more than 500 trees, posing potential challenges for local residents. To alleviate these concerns, the Forest Department was directed to swiftly and properly dispose of the fallen trees. Adequate manpower should be deployed to ensure efficient execution of this task,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) has reportedly taken the initiative to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the load-bearing capacity of major towns within Uttarakhand.

This move includes fifteen towns, including tourist destinations like Mussoorie, Lansdowne, and Nainital. "The scientific and technical study would be done by experts and on the basis of their recommendations, construction works would be approved in the towns, especially in the hill areas,"&nbsp;Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami told the media outlet Times of India.&nbsp;
