<h2><strong>About the project</strong></h2>

<p>The upcoming Likaru-Mig La-Fukche road close to Hanle in Eastern Ladakh will be 64-kilometre long and at its highest point, it will be at an altitude of 19,400 feet making it the highest motorable road in the world after its completion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The current record holder is of the highest motorable road in the world Umling La road in Ladakh at a height of 19,024 feet, also made by the BRO. The 52-km road that connects Chishumle to Demchok, which is right on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the contested border between India and China.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the upcoming road that will connect Likaru with Fukche is three kilometres from the LAC in Eastern Ladakh. According to media reports, an all-woman unit of BRO engineers began construction on Tuesday, August 15.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“On the occasion of 77th Independence Day @BROindia starts construction on yet another strategic road, Road Likaru-Mig La-Fukche. This road will pass through an altitude of 19,400 feet and will be the world’s highest motorable road surpassing the Umling La Pass,” said BRO in a post&nbsp;on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday.&nbsp;<br />

<p>The construction of the Likaru-Mig La-Fukch also began at a time when India and China have been locked in a military standoff along the LAC, in the Ladakh sector for more than three years now. This is after multiple rounds of talks including the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/indian-and-chinese-army-hold-talks-to-resolve-eastern-ladakh-stand-off-626849">reported Major-General level</a> talks were held on Friday, August 18.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The talks were held to resolve the issues at Depsang Plains and CNN Junction near Demchok &nbsp;– the remaining friction points between the two sides. It also comes days after the 19th round of the China-India Corps Commander Level Meeting took place at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point in the Leh district of Ladakh, a Union Territory of India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an interview with news agency ANI, Lt General Rajeev Chaudhry, Director General, BRO,&nbsp;said that the upcoming road will also “help in the deployment of troops at the earliest if any critical situation arises.”<br />
<br />
“On 15th August BRO started a road connecting Likru, Mig-La and Phukche at a height of 19400 ft,”&nbsp;said the BRO official.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also spoke about how the Indian Prime Minister will also soon inaugurate the Sela tunnel which will be the “highest and longest bi-lane tunnel in the world”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We’ll also be starting with the Shinku La tunnel which will be the highest and will break the record of the Mi La tunnel situated in China. Nyoma Airfield when completed will be one of the highest airfields in the world,” the BRO official told ANI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The latest&nbsp;engagement, expected to take place on Monday, is aimed to address the military standoff between the two nations.</p>

Military talks focusing on disengagement and de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh commenced shortly after the initial confrontations between the Indian and Chinese forces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Through previous&nbsp;talks, both sides managed to disengage from various confrontation points and relocate to new positions, aiming to prevent clashes and promote peaceful resolution.</p>

<p>ANI while quoting sources said that the Indian side is committed to achieving an amicable resolution while safeguarding its interests in the region. They added that in order to match the Chinese deployments opposite eastern Ladakh, India has stationed more than 50,000 troops in the area.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The governments of India and China on Wednesday (May 31) held in-person diplomatic talks in New Delhi over the eastern Ladakh row. According to a report by the news agency PTI, the two countries discussed proposals for disengagement in the remaining friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh in a "frank and open manner".</p>

<p>India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that New Delhi and Beijing agreed to hold the 19th round of high-level military talks at an early date to achieve the objective of restoration of peace and tranquillity in the border areas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Wednesday's discussion took place under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC). The Indian side was led by Joint Secretary (East Asia) from the MEA. The Chinese side, meanwhile, was led by the Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, PTI reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was the 27th meeting of the WMCC and the previous meeting was held in Beijing on February 22.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 18th round of military talks between India and China was held on April 23 during which both sides agreed to stay in close touch and work out a mutually acceptable solution to the remaining issues in eastern Ladakh at the earliest.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And days later, Chinese Defence Minister Li Shangfu arrived in India to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, Shangfu met his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh and the two leaders held bilateral talks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Singh told his Shangfu that China's violation of existing border agreements "eroded" the entire basis of ties between the two countries and that all issues relating to the frontier must be resolved in accordance with the existing pacts.</p>

<p>The eastern Ladakh border standoff started on May 5, 2020, after a violent clash in the Pangong Lake area. And in June of that year, a violent skirmish between Indian and Chinese troops broke out in the Galwan Valley, resulting in losses on both sides. This was the most serious military conflict between India and China in decades.&nbsp;</p>

According to the report, the Intel Lab's geo-intelligence researcher Damien Symon said that developments which have surfaced at these three airfields and even at other regions along the border clearly indicate “China’s strategic intention to bolster its military capabilities and offset India’s advantages in the area”.</p>

Air Vice Marshal (retired) Manmohan Bahadur, who had once served as an aviator in the Ladakh region, stated that the Chinese government has used the last three years to find ways for countering the comparative advantages of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) in the region.<br />

“The IAF could carry the war to them because of these advantages. Most of the Indian airbases are along the foothills and the aircraft could take off with larger [weapons] payload,” said Bahadur, while speaking to the Hindustan Times.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In September 2020, Jaishankar and his then-Chinese counterpart Wang Yi came to an agreement on a five-point course of action to disengage and ease tensions. However, tensions continued as troops clashed again in December 2022 close to the Tawang area in Arunachal Pradesh. India at the time said that Chinese forces tried to unilaterally change the status quo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India and China remained engaged in many Corps Commander-level talks to resolve the dispute.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have made it very clear to the Chinese that we cannot have a breach of peace and tranquility, you can't violate agreement and want the rest of the relationship to continue as though nothing happened. That’s just not tenable."</p>

<p>Speaking about his most recent encounter with the new Chinese foreign minister, Qin Gang, Jaishankar said he discussed the border issues in&nbsp;the&nbsp;meeting. Qin arrived in India for G20 foreign ministers meeting that was hosted by New Delhi.&nbsp;</p>
