An Antoine Griezmann double allowed Barcelona to return to winning ways with an emphatic 5-2 La Liga win over Real Betis on Sunday. After the champions were surprisingly beaten 1-0 by Athletic Bilbao in their opening match of the season last week, they rebounded in style on Sunday. Strikes from Carles Perez, Jordi Alba and Arturo Vidal completed a memorable day for the Catalans as they marked defender Gerard Pique's 500th appearance for the club. Barca, who were without injured talisman Lionel Messi, started on the back foot and fell behind when Nabil Fekir netted with a sublime angled strike in the 15th minute. Griezmann, who joined Barca last month from rivals Atletico Madrid, scored four minutes before halftime to level the scores. The French World Cup winner's maiden goal for the club proved to be the catalyst for the Spanish champions as they went on to score four more unanswered goals in 27 second-half minutes. "I was pleased with how we did in the first half, but when you go behind you always think that there's stuff to change," coach Ernesto Valverde told reporters. "We needed to score and the goal to make it 1-1 changed things for the better and we might have even scored a second [before halftime]. The game was high tempo and we like it that way." Griezmann then curled in from the edge of the box five minutes after the restart and Valverde admitted it had been a big night for the new arrival. "I have to admit it was a really important day for him given the absentees we had," Valverde said. "He responded brilliantly. He dropped deep to help the midfield, but also pushed on and can lose his man brilliantly. "For us, it's fundamental to have players who can clock up goals and the fact Griezmann debuted at the Camp Nou and scored is great news." Perez, making his first start for the club, then made it 3-1 after 56 minutes before Alba struck on the hour from close range. Substitute Vidal then finished off a wonderful team move 13 minutes from the end following a wonderful through ball from Griezmann. Two minutes later, Loren netted a stunning consolation strike from 25 metres for the visitors. Valverde was able to bring on academy player Ansu Fati, who at 16 years and 298 days became the second-youngest player in Barcelona's history, late on. The Catalans have three points from two La Liga games, while Real Betis have lost both of them games this season.

Griezmann double helps Barcelona to return to winning ways

Barcelona are still without all-time top scorer Lionel Messi as the Argentine was left out of the squad for their first home game of the La Liga season on Sunday against Real Betis due to a calf injury.

Messi missed Barca's 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao in their opening game and did not take part in the team's final training session before facing Betis, who were the only team to win at the Camp Nou last campaign.

The captain's continued absence adds to Barca's shortages in attack as Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele are sidelined with muscle problems.

"We can't afford to take a step back with him, and if he is not 100 per cent fit then we will not take any risks with him," coach Ernesto Valverde told a news conference.

The loss of Messi piles more responsibility on Barca's €120-million&nbsp;signing Antoine Griezmann, who had an uninspiring competitive debut in Bilbao.

Valverde said his side's marquee signing is improving but challenged him to get more involved in the team's play.

"Every day he is integrating more into the team but we want him to participate more in the team's play, he didn't contribute as much as we wanted him to in Bilbao but if he does he can be decisive," the coach said.

"We need to be more productive when we have possession but he also needs to show more initiative and try to create more chances."

Injured Lionel Messi out of Barcelona game with Betis

Lionel Messi could be ready to play against Real Betis on Sunday and Barcelona could do with him back.&nbsp;

In other circumstances, Messi might have left it another week, having missed the whole of pre-season with a calf injury he sustained in his first training session back.

But after re-joining his team-mates on Wednesday, the temptation will be to put Messi straight to work, to lift the mood and minimise the chances of what would be a disastrous second slip in La Liga.&nbsp;

One defeat, by Athletic Bilbao inside a bouncing San Mames on the opening night and inflicted by a freakishly brilliant bicycle kick in the 89th minute, might ordinarily have been accepted as a blip.&nbsp;

"San Mames is always a difficult place to play," said Gerard Pique. "When you're not at your best, they make you look stupid."

Yet memories of Barcelona's capitulation in May remain fresh.&nbsp;

The humiliation in the Champions League and submission in the final of the Copa del Rey mean this team and, in particular, their coach begin the season very much on the back foot.&nbsp;

Ernesto Valverde is never far from blame, suspicion about his style and suitability always bubbling under the surface, despite the fact he is hoping to become the first Barca coach since Pep Guardiola to win three La Liga titles in a row.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When Messi tweaked his calf, it was assumed an attacking roster of Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele would cope.&nbsp;

Lure of Neymar

Instead, Suarez and Dembele both picked up strains against Bilbao while Griezmann delivered the sort of hesitant display to suggest he may also need time to adapt.&nbsp;

"This league is hard," Griezmann said. "We have to bounce back."

Another muscle injury for Dembele, his fifth in two years at Barcelona, is a concern, especially after the 22-year-old reportedly took time off in France instead of undergoing medical tests.&nbsp;

It all means Messi's return carries added urgency, even if it remains more likely the Argentinian will come off the bench at Camp Nou than be named in the starting line-up.&nbsp;

The lure of Neymar also grows, even if Barcelona are yet to agree a deal with Paris Saint-Germain. The prospect of Real Madrid jumping in too, surely plays on the mind of president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Coming into the season, it was Madrid with the darker clouds hanging over them after a poor pre-season left some wondering whether Zinedine Zidane, more than Valverde, would soon be feeling the heat.&nbsp;

Instead, a retro-looking side, without a single summer signing, and with Gareth Bale, opened up last weekend with an assertive 3-1 win away at Celta Vigo.&nbsp;

"We had difficulties in pre-season with our results but not our work," Zidane said. "It was essential to start this way, by playing well and winning."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bale was excellent and with Eden Hazard not expected back until after the international break, the Welshman should continue his reintegration against Real Valladolid on Saturday.

"We have to turn over a new leaf," said Sergio Ramos. "We can't regret or celebrate what's happened before. We start from scratch."

Atletico Madrid made a winning start too, at home to Getafe, even if a slightly nervy 1-0 win felt rather familiar, despite a handful of attacking signings this summer, including the hugely talented Joao Felix.

Still, Getafe were arguably the toughest opponent to break down last season. Atletico might have more joy on Saturday away at Leganes.&nbsp;

Troubled Barcelona look to Lionel Messi for inspiration

Zinedine Zidane has challenged Gareth Bale to show why he is still one of the world's best players as he continues his reintegration at Real Madrid.&nbsp;

Bale, 30, was a surprise inclusion in the starting line-up against Celta Vigo last weekend, when Madrid opened with an impressive 3-1 win in La Liga and Bale was arguably man of the match.&nbsp;

Zidane said in July it would be "best for everyone" if Bale left Madrid this summer but the Welshman has been eager to stay and appears to be regaining the confidence of his coach.&nbsp;

"What has changed is that the player is going to stay, nothing more," Zidane said in a press conference on Friday, ahead of Saturday's game at home to Real Valladolid.&nbsp;

"The important thing is the player wants to stay. It's true that a lot was said about him, by me as well, but he is going to stay.&nbsp;

"He is a great player, he has shown that before and he has to show it again. He has to be the player we know that he is."&nbsp;

Bale's start in Vigo came after Eden Hazard sustained a thigh injury in training and it remains to be seen if he can keep his place when the Belgian returns after the international break.&nbsp;

"Bale played well the other day, a great match overall but also his level defensively was very high," said Zidane.&nbsp;

"He worked hard and we have to continue in this way, Gareth, everyone, they are all going to be important."

'Can't wait for September 2'&nbsp;

The transfer window in Spain does not close until September 2 and Zidane was asked about the future of goalkeeper Keylor Navas, as well as Real Madrid's pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain striker Neymar.&nbsp;

Barcelona and Madrid are both chasing Neymar but neither have agreed a deal with PSG, who reportedly set Barca a deadline of Friday to present a suitable offer.&nbsp;

"The players I have are the ones that are here. Everything else, anything can happen until September 2. Some can arrive, some can go," Zidane said.&nbsp;

"For that reason I can't wait for September 2 so you won't ask me about this anymore."&nbsp;

Navas has lost out to Thibaut Courtois in the battle for the number one goalkeeper spot and the Costa Rican is believed to be seeking a move before the window closes.&nbsp;

"He has not told me he wants to leave," Zidane said. "I am not contemplating him leaving, not at all. "He is here, he wants to be here and he is working in that way. He has always been professional."&nbsp;

Philippe Coutinho joins Bayern Munich: New challenges await Brazilian star

Barcelona's&nbsp;Philippe&nbsp;Coutinho&nbsp;has joined Bayern Munich on a one-year loan worth €8.5 million ($9.5 million) with an option to buy, the Spanish club confirmed Monday.

"The agreement provides for an option for Bayern to buy at a €120-million fee," Barcelona said.

The 27-year-old Brazilian joined Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018 for an initial €120 million&nbsp;in a deal that included another €40 million in potential add-ons.

But the international midfielder's stint at Barcelona never worked out as hoped despite huge excitement around his arrival at the Camp Nou.

Initially tried in midfield where he plays for Brazil,&nbsp;Coutinho&nbsp;was pushed into the front three by Ernesto Valverde last season but the switch never paid off and fans rarely glimpsed the form he showed at Liverpool.

"Coutinho: story of a massive disaster," headlined Monday's Barcelona-based Sport newspaper.

Speculation about his future had shadowed&nbsp;Coutinho&nbsp;over the summer with French champions Paris Saint-Germain mentioned as a likely destination in a deal linked to a potential Neymar return to Barcelona.

Coutinho's place in the side looked shaky following the arrival of French World Cup winner Antoine Griezmann from Atletico in July and he was left out of the squad for the first game of the new La Liga season on Friday, a 1-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao.

The player, who has scored 21 goals in 75 games for Barca in all competitions despite being unsettled, said he was delighted with the move to Germany.

Barca's Philippe Coutinho joins Bayern Munich on loan

Coach Zinedine Zidane said Gareth Bale will remain at Real Madrid this season after the Wales forward produced an inspiring performance in a 3-1 win at Celta Vigo on Saturday after a summer of uncertainty.

Bale created Madrid's opening goal, which was scored by Karim Benzema, with a superb change of pace down the left wing and was a constant threat to Celta while he also contributed to Madrid's defensive work.

Toni Kroos later stretched the visitors' lead with a superb strike after Luka Modric had been sent off for Madrid, while Lucas Vazquez added a third later on.

Bale was not expected to stay in the Spanish capital this season after a tense stand-off with Zidane during pre-season, with the coach openly stating Bale was set to leave and even remarking: "If he leaves tomorrow, all the better."

He was reported to be on the verge of signing for Chinese club Jiangsu Suning in July but the move was called off and his chances of holding down a place in the team increased after fellow forward Marco Asensio sustained a serious knee injury.

When new arrival Eden Hazard was ruled out for three weeks after picking up a muscle problem on Friday, it again boosted Bale's chances of playing.

However, Zidane said he had always intended to pick Bale against Celta and added the forward would not leave the club any time soon.

"He's going to stay and we all have to think of that as a positive thing," Zidane told a news conference.

"We have to focus on this season and nothing else. The injury to Hazard was bad luck for us but it didn't change the plans we had for Bale in this game. Gareth and everyone else here is going to show this shirt the respect it deserves."

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also praised Bale's performance and credited his side for making such a strong start to the campaign after a worrying run of results in pre-season.

"We weren't surprised at all when Bale was named in the team because the boss counts on every single player and then decides the starting 11. Gareth played an outstanding game," he said.

"We worked hard in pre-season but results didn't go our way for different reasons, but the season starts with the first game, not before.

"We played very well in the first half then in the second we fought hard together with a man down."

Gareth Bale to stay after helping Madrid to win at Celta Vigo: Zidane

La Liga champions Barcelona fell to their first opening day defeat of the season in 11 years when they were beaten 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao thanks to a sensational late overhead kick from veteran striker Aritz Aduriz.

La Liga champions Barcelona fell to their first opening day defeat of the season in 11 years when they were beaten 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao thanks to a sensational late overhead kick from veteran striker Aritz Aduriz. The 38-year-old came off the bench late in the game and soon made Barca pay for squandering several chances by acrobatically lashing an unstoppable shot into the net in the 89th minute. The Catalans were without injured captain Lionel Messi but lined up with 200 million euros of new talent in France forward Antoine Griezmann and Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong. However, they lacked sparkle against an energetic Bilbao side who had the better run of play for the first half even though Barca came closest to scoring before the interval. Luis Suarez struck the near post in the first half when presented with a terrible back pass from Athletic's Unai Lopez and was soon forced off with a calf injury, while substitute Rafinha rattled the crossbar after coming on. Barca improved after the break as coach Ernesto Valverde replaced young midfielder Carles Alena with the more experienced Ivan Rakitic and spent most of the second period in the home side's area. Rakitic and Rafinha each came close to scoring for the visitors but they were outdone by one of Spanish football's best loved players in Aduriz, who has announced that he will retire at the end of the season. "Sometimes football is so beautiful and when you least expect it a ball like that comes to your feet and goes into the net," Aduriz told reporters. "Barcelona are the best team around and it's very difficult to last a whole game taking them on and matching them for space but we knew exactly how to manage our energy." It was the first time Barca have lost their opening game of the season since 2008, when they were beaten 1-0 by Numancia in Pep Guardiola's debut game in charge, although they swiftly recovered from that setback and went on to win the treble. "This is a very difficult ground to come to and we were made to see how tough the competition is," said Barca defender Gerard Pique. "We did not play like we usually do and they put us under a lot of pressure and if you're not at your very best then a team like Athletic walks all over you."

Aduriz's late overhead kick stuns defending league champions Barcelona

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said he would not risk an unfit Lionel Messi in Friday's La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao and continued to be non-committal about Neymar re-joining the club from Paris St Germain.

Barca's all-time top scorer and captain Messi injured his calf in training before his side's brief pre-season tour of the United States and has not yet returned to full training a day before his side visit Athletic.

Videos emerged on Thursday of the Argentine getting up to speed in individual training sessions on sand but Valverde said there was no chance he would gamble with Messi's fitness.

"We never like to risk any players and much less someone like Leo," Valverde told a news conference on Thursday.

"He still hasn't returned to training with the team and while we are happy with his progress, individual training is very different to playing a match. We are going to wait and see."

Barca have spent over €200 million on signings including Frenkie de Jong and Antoine Griezmann but continue to be linked with a second swoop for Neymar, two years after he left the Catalans for PSG for a world record €222 million ($246 million).

Valverde refused to answer questions about the club's interest in Neymar and lamented the fact that the Spanish transfer window does not shut before the season starts, as it does in England.

"It's inconvenient and it's not logical. The normal thing would be that the team you start with is the same one that will compete for the whole season," Valverde said.

"Now we have two weeks until the transfer window shuts and you can't breathe easily until then. I'm very happy with the squad I have at the moment but I don't know what will happen next.

"Neymar belongs to PSG and we'll see what happens but I can't say anything more about him."

Barca's game in Bilbao was only confirmed last Friday after a court case was settled between the league's organising body and the Spanish football federation over scheduling games outside of the weekend.

Valverde criticised the two bodies for their handling of the situation.

"It seems incredible to me that the war over the match days and schedules was not solved before hand, the image of the league and federation has been damaged as a result," he added.

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said he would not risk an unfit Lionel Messi in Friday's La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao and continued to be non-committal about Neymar re-joining the club from Paris St Germain.

We are going to wait and see." Barca have spent over €200 million on signings including Frenkie de Jong and Antoine Griezmann but continue to be linked with a second swoop for Neymar, two years after he left the Catalans for PSG for a world record €222 million ($246 million). Unfit Lionel Messi ruled out of season opener against Bilbao

Real Madrid's preparations for the new season hit an untimely snag as marquee signing Eden Hazard was ruled out of Saturday's La Liga season opener against Celta Vigo after sustaining a muscle injury in Friday's training session.

A statement from Madrid said Hazard underwent tests after training which revealed he had injured the anterior tendon in his left thigh but did not state how long the Belgian forward would be out of action for.

Hazard, 28, joined Madrid from Chelsea in June for a joint-club record fee of €100 million ($110.73 million), their most profile signing in a busy close season for the 13-times European champions, who spent more than 300 million euros on new recruits.

Real are also without fellow winger Marco Asensio for the start of the new campaign due to a serious knee injury, while Dani Carvajal is suspended.

Eden Hazard out of Madrid season opener with thigh injury

Zinedine Zidane has admitted Gareth Bale is back in his plans ahead of Real Madrid's opening La Liga game of the season against Celta Vigo on Saturday.&nbsp;

Eden Hazard sustained a thigh injury in training on Friday, meaning Bale could even start against Celta following a turbulent summer for the Welshman.&nbsp;

Zidane was keen for Bale to be sold but Madrid cancelled a deal with Chinese club Jiangsu Suning while the winger's salary of around €18 million a year has proven too high for other interested clubs.&nbsp;

Bale is also eager to stay at Madrid, where he has a contract until 2022, and is not interested in moving to Paris Saint-Germain, despite suggestions he could be included in a bid for Neymar.&nbsp;

"It looked like he was leaving and now he's here with us, that's it," Zidane said.&nbsp;

"The dynamic changes and things change and now I'm going to count on him like everyone else. I said it a short time ago, I'm going to count on all the players that are here."&nbsp;

Zidane left Bale out of his squad for three consecutive pre-season friendlies but the 30-year-old returned for the last game against Roma, when he came off the bench in the second half.

The transfer window in Spain closes on September 2.&nbsp;

"He has a contract, he's an important player and I hope all the players want to make it difficult for me to pick the team," Zidane added.&nbsp;

Zidane had promised wholesale changes this summer and his first press conference of the season was dominated by questions about the transfer window.&nbsp;

He refused to be drawn on a move for Neymar, insisting: "Neymar is not a Real Madrid player. We are interested in the players that are here."&nbsp;

And on the failed attempt to buy Paul Pogba from Manchester United, he said: "Paul is a player for Manchester United and we have to respect that. Here we are thinking about the game tomorrow."&nbsp;

But Madrid's failure to sign Pogba and sell either Bale or James Rodriguez means the club's president Florentino Perez has perhaps not delivered the sort of changes Zidane had hoped for.&nbsp;

"It's not about whether it's positive or negative," Zidane said. "I accept what I have. We've talked with the people that have to do those things and it is the games now that interest us."&nbsp;

Zidane said James is fit and ready to be involved against Celta. "He is in shape and I'm glad to have him," Zidane said.&nbsp;

But Hazard is expected to be out for three to four weeks and joins Ferland Mendy, who is recovering from a calf problem, and Marco Asensio, who has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, on the sidelines.&nbsp;

Unfit Messi ruled out of season opener against Bilbao

The La Liga season begins on Friday with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid all set to be far stronger units after a record-smashing transfer window which saw Spain's biggest three clubs splurge over €800 million on new players.

Champions Barcelona have been practically in a league of their own in the last two seasons and are favourites to win a third consecutive title after making some smart moves in the summer to replenish their squad of serial winners.

Barca start on Friday away to Athletic Bilbao, where they will flaunt France's World Cup-winning forward Antoine Griezmann and fresh-faced Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, signed for a combined €195 million.

The Catalans, though, will be without talisman and usual top scorer Lionel Messi for their curtain-raiser as he recovers from a muscle injury, while the club continues to be linked with a sensational move to re-sign Neymar from Paris St Germain.

Thirty-three times champions Real Madrid, meanwhile, plot an attempted resurgence in the domestic competition away to Celta Vigo on Saturday, after two disastrous campaigns in a row saw them finish 17 and 19 points adrift of Barcelona respectively.

Madrid have spent a staggering €305 million in the close season, a third of that going on Belgium forward Eden Hazard, but the mood at the Santiago Bernabeu is far from optimistic after a terrible run of results in pre-season.

Last year's runners-up Atletico Madrid have also thrown money around this summer after cashing in on the sales of Griezmann, Lucas Hernandez and Rodri and they host Getafe in a euphoric mood after an outstanding pre-season campaign.

"I’ve never been more excited about a new season," said Atletico midfielder Koke.

"New players have come in with lots of hope and humility and they are prepared to word hard."

Huge price tag

Portuguese teenager Joao Felix will be the player to watch at the Wanda Metropolitano after an €126-million&nbsp;move from Benfica, although the forward's impressive early performances indicate he will not be intimidated by his huge price tag.

Valencia finished fourth last season but will face a stern battle for the final Champions League spot with Sevilla, with new coach Julen Lopetegui determined to rebuild his reputation after being sacked by the Spain team and Real Madrid last year.

Sevilla are the biggest spenders outside the top three, shelling out some €150 million on 13 new arrivals, although they have bid farewell to crucial players in Wissam Ben Yedder and Pablo Sarabia.

Real Mallorca make a long-awaited return to the top flight after a six-year absence and are joined by Osasuna and Granada, who were both relegated from La Liga two years ago.

It is also set to be an intriguing season off the pitch due to the ongoing feud between La Liga's organising body and the national football federation (RFEF), who have been in legal battles over when games should be scheduled.&nbsp;

There is also expected to be renewed tensions between the two organisations when the RFEF reveals plans to hold a revamped Spanish Super Cup outside of Spain in January, proposals La Liga have said they will vehemently oppose.&nbsp;

La Liga set for close-run race after Barca, Real, Atletico transfer blitz

Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane remained coy on the Neymar's potential move to the Spanish side as he said that "anything can happen" before the transfer window closes.&nbsp;

Brazilian star footballer, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, is keen on leaving PSG and&nbsp;his&nbsp;transfer talks are "more advanced than before" after he&nbsp;was dropped for the French champions' opening Ligue 1 match.&nbsp;

Real Madrid or a return to Barcelona are the most likely destinations for the world's most expensive footballer.&nbsp;

On being asked about the Neymar's move, Zidane said, "We are going to play with the roster we have. Anything can happen then, as you said there are three more weeks (before the end of the transfer window)."&nbsp;

"The reality is the team that we have now. We know we need to play a great season, and nothing else," the coach added.&nbsp;

In the pre-season friendlies, Real Madrid lost to Roma on penalties after the match ended in a 2-2 draw.&nbsp;

In the match, Gareth Bale played for the first time in four pre-season matches that indicated that despite his exit rumours, he might stay with the club.&nbsp;

Earlier, Zidane had made it clear that Bale was not part of his plans and was left out completely in their previous three friendlies against RB Salzburg, Fenerbahce and Tottenham. &nbsp;

Addressing the media after the match, Zidane replied on whether midfielders James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale are still part of his project.&nbsp;

He said, "James and Bale are players of this club, they are both in the team. We count on all the players we have."&nbsp;

Barcelona's opening match of their La Liga title defence at Athletic Bilbao will take place next Friday after a judge ruled that matches could be played on that day but not on Mondays.

The decision from a court in Madrid means matches scheduled for Fridays in the opening three rounds, which were announced at the start of July, can be played, while matches planned for Mondays will have to be reorganised.

But La Liga has announced it will appeal the ruling as it aims for both Friday and Monday matches to be allowed this season.

"While the ruling has partially respected La Liga's requests with regards to interim measures, this organisation ... does not agree with the ruling and will proceed to exercise its right to appeal the decision," La Liga said in a statement.

Bilbao will host Barca at 9pm local time (1900 GMT) at San Mames stadium on August 16.

Confirmation of the date of the La Liga curtain-raiser comes just one week before the fixture kicks off, leaving supporters little time to arrange tickets and transport.

The decision also means existing matches due to take place on Mondays, including Eibar's trip to Mallorca and Real Betis' clash with Real Valladolid on August 19, will have to be moved.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) claimed a victory over the country's top division, who backed the controversial Friday and Monday matches and argued removing those slots would risk losing lucrative television contracts.

"We are very satisfied and happy," said RFEF president Luis Rubiales.&nbsp;
"It's a historic day. The RFEF's position and my commitment to Spanish football and fans have been fulfilled."

However, the RFEF had wanted the removal of both Monday and Friday matches, which have proven controversial in Spain, where they have attracted disappointing attendances and been reserved primarily for teams lower down in the league table.

Barcelona to kick off La Liga next Friday after court's fixture ruling

Real Madrid will rival Barcelona in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/prosecutors-to-drop-rape-charges-against-neymar-241655">Neymar</a> this summer, according to reports in the Spanish press on Friday.&nbsp;

Madrid have shifted focus to Neymar after the close of the English Premier League's transfer window on Thursday ended their hopes of signing Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

According to Marca, Neymar has "returned to the scene" with the club "believing for some time that the team is lacking a big star up front".&nbsp;

Sports newspaper AS claims the Brazilian has been offered to Madrid by PSG, who are open to selling if they can either recoup the 222 million euros they spent on him in 2017 or receive half that amount, with players included in the deal.&nbsp;

It means La Liga's two greatest rivals are set to go head-to-head in the battle to sign Neymar before the Spanish transfer window closes on September 2.&nbsp;

Barcelona newspaper Mundo Deportivo says the 27-year-old will wait until August 20 for Barcelona to make a decisive move, after which "PSG's number 10 does not rule out any option in order to leave the French champions, where it is clear he does not want to stay any longer."&nbsp;

But Mundo adds that "it is clear Neymar wants to play for Barcelona" while Diario Sport agrees, writing that "the winning card Barca continues to hold is the will of the striker to runite with players like Leo Messi and Luis Suarez. With them he has a great understanding on the pitch and also a strong friendship off it."&nbsp;

Marca believes Madrid also have factors in their favour. "Neymar's priority is not to go to Barcelona. His priority is to leave the PSG," wrote Marca, also citing their "magnificent relationship" with PSG, "quite the opposite" of how the French club view Barcelona.&nbsp;

Luka Modric is mentioned as a possible makeweight while Philippe Coutinho, who reportedly rejected an offer from Tottenham this week, could be included in an offer from Barcelona.&nbsp;

Sport admits whichever team signs Neymar will "inflict a blow on their rivals by snatching a star player from the other's grasp".&nbsp;

"From now on, it will be Neymar that decides," Sport added. "Barcelona want the player to go public but he understands such a move would be risky. If Barca and PSG do not reach an agreement he would be stuck in the French capital for a third year."&nbsp;

Real Madrid will rival Barcelona in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Neymar this summer, according to reports in the Spanish press on Friday. Real Madrid will rival Barcelona in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Neymar this summer, according to reports in the Spanish press on Friday. Madrid have shifted focus to Neymar after the close of the English Premier League's transfer window on Thursday ended their hopes of signing Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba. According to Marca, Neymar has "returned to the scene" with the club "believing for some time that the team is lacking a big star up front". Sports newspaper AS claims the Brazilian has been offered to Madrid by PSG, who are open to selling if they can either recoup the 222 million euros they spent on him in 2017 or receive half that amount, with players included in the deal. It means La Liga's two greatest rivals are set to go head-to-head in the battle to sign Neymar before the Spanish transfer window closes on September 2. Barcelona newspaper Mundo Deportivo says the 27-year-old will wait until August 20 for Barcelona to make a decisive move, after which "PSG's number 10 does not rule out any option in order to leave the French champions, where it is clear he does not want to stay any longer." Real Madrid go head-to-head with Barcelona for Neymar: Reports

The time and date of La Liga's opening games of the season may not be decided until days before the first match kicks off, after a court postponed its decision on Wednesday.&nbsp;

La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) are locked in another bitter dispute, with the RFEF trying to ban fixtures taking place on Friday and Monday nights this term.&nbsp;

A commercial court in Madrid heard the case for over four hours on Wednesday but a decision may not be made until Friday or even Monday, four days before the league had been due to begin.&nbsp;

The division's curtain-raiser was due to take place between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona at Bilbao's San Mames stadium on Friday, August 16, as announced by La Liga at the start of last month.&nbsp;

The opening round of games also included two matches on Monday, August 19 when Mallorca were down to host Eibar, and Real Betis expected to play at home to Real Valladolid.&nbsp;

But RFEF president Luis Rubiales has claimed fixtures can only be played this season on Fridays and Mondays with the approval of the RFEF.&nbsp;

La Liga argues it has the authority to set the dates and times of the calendar and that removing Friday and Monday matches would put existing television deals in jeopardy.&nbsp;

"Broadcasters would begin to negotiate 30 per cent downwards," warned Jaume Roures, the president of Mediapro, who was presented as a witness by La Liga. "It would have very significant economic consequences," Roures added.&nbsp;

The RFEF insisted the previous agreement with La Liga that allowed matches to be played on Friday and Monday expired in June.

The slots have proven controversial in Spain, where Friday and Monday games have attracted disappointing attendances and been reserved primarily for the league's lower teams.

Alaves supporters protested during a Monday match against Levante in February. Some fans boycotted kick-off while others carried a black coffin around the stadium, to symbolise the death of Spanish football.

La Liga start date still unknown as court delays decision

Gareth Bale will not be leaving Real Madrid on loan during the transfer window despite falling out of favour under Zinedine Zidane, his agent said on Tuesday.

The Real boss said at the weekend the La Liga giants were poised to offload the 30-year-old Wales star.

But his representative, Jonathan Barnett, told&nbsp;Sky Sports News any deal would have to be a permanent one.

"There will be no makeshift deals to get him out of the club," said Barnett, who said previously that Zidane has shown "no respect" for Bale's achievements at Real.

"Gareth is one of the best players on the planet. I can guarantee you he will not be going on loan to any club."

Bale has been deemed surplus to requirements at Real despite helping his side to a Spanish title and four Champions League crowns since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur six years ago.

His brace, including a brilliant bicycle kick, sank Liverpool in the 2018 final but he was not used as a regular starter by Zidane after the Frenchman returned to the Real bench in early March.

"Gareth is a Real Madrid player and for now he's staying as a Real Madrid player," said Barnett.

"If something comes along that suits us, then things could change and he could be gone in a day or a week. Or he could still be a Real player in three years, when his contract ends."

Gareth Bale 'won't be leaving' Real Madrid on loan, says agent

Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic accepts his days at the Nou Camp may be numbered, but for now he is concentrating on preparing for next season with the Spanish champions.

After the arrival of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax and 31-year-old Sergio Busquets signing a new five-year deal last year, Barcelona’s midfield is looking a little crowded and the Croat could be the man shipped out this summer.

Speaking ahead of his side’s pre-season match against Chelsea in Japan on Tuesday, Rakitic admitted it was awkward talking about his future but he was used to the rumours.

“Does it bother me? No it doesn’t, I have to understand soccer in general works like that,” Rakitic said at a news conference in Tokyo on Monday when asked about any impending move.

“In some way it also fills me with pride because if other teams ask about me it is because I am doing things really well."

Rakitic said he is simply trying to enjoy his soccer at Barca as they seek to put disappointments of recent seasons behind them.

“I think the club has other things to do right now other than speak about my issues,” the 31-year-old said.

Coach Ernesto Valverde has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to attacking midfielders at his disposal after the arrival of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/antoine-griezmann-says-heart-with-barca-after-ugly-atletico-exit-237708">Antoine Griezmann</a> from La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid this month.

Griezmann joins a loaded attacking group that also includes Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Phillipe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele.

French international Griezmann, who is likely to play his first game in a Barcelona shirt on Tuesday, accepts that Barca play a different brand of football to Atletico but he is confident he can adjust.

“They are two different ways of attacking,” Griezmann said. “At Atletico, it’s very quick and the other way is with lots of patience. I will adapt like I did at Atletico.”

“It’s a style I like. I know I can contribute in many ways and, as you know, it’s not a problem for me to run in front or in the back.”

Gareth Bale's agent has branded Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane a "disgrace" after the Frenchman revealed that the La Liga giants were <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/nothing-personal-against-him-says-zinedine-zidane-as-real-madrid-ready-to-move-gareth-bale-237417">ready to offload the Wales star</a> in a matter of days.

Zidane left Bale out of the Real squad for Saturday's 3-1 exhibition loss to Bayern Munich in Houston, and after the match he revealed he had been dropped because the club were "working on his departure", adding that he hoped it happens soon, "for everyone's sake".

"Zidane is a disgrace, he shows no respect for a player that has done so much for Real Madrid," Bale's agent Jonathan Barnett told AFP.

Asked whether Bale is close to leaving Madrid, Barnett added,&nbsp;"We are working on it".

Bale has been frozen out in Madrid by Zidane despite helping his side to a Spanish title and four Champions Leagues since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur six year ago.

His brace, including a brilliant bicycle kick, sank Liverpool in the 2018 final, but he was shunted aside by Zidane as soon as he returned to the Real bench in early March.

After Zidane's reappointment, Bale played 90 minutes in just three of the remaining 11 matches, was left out completely four times and frequently substituted when he did play.

He was denied a chance to say goodbye at the end of last season when he was left on the bench in a 2-0 loss to Real Betis that saw Zidane's side submerged with boos and whistles.

However Zidane insists that his treatment of the 30-year-old forward "is nothing personal", even though Bale would be welcome at some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Antoine Griezmann trains for the first time with Barcelona

Neymar posted a video featuring himself in a Barcelona shirt on social media on Saturday, raising more speculation that the Paris St Germain forward might return to his former club, but his public relations company said he would show up in Paris on Monday.

The injured Neymar has been in his native Brazil supporting their victory over Peru in the Copa America final, missing pre-season training with PSG.

He joined PSG from Barcelona on a five-year deal for a world-record transfer fee of €222 million ($250.17 million) in 2017, but there has been recent talk of him returning to the Spanish club.

The 27-year-old prompted more speculation with a brief Instagram video, showing a black-and-white image of himself in a shirt with the badge of Barcelona and a quote from the Bible, which was widely reproduced on news websites.

The post led to much speculation about his intended message, with French newspaper L'Equipe saying: "Everyone will see in this ambiguous message a hidden announcement by the PSG striker of his return to his old club."

But his public relations company, in a statement carried on Brazilian websites, said, "After these events he will show up normally on July 15 as PSG had been informed weeks ago."

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu earlier this month confirmed reports that Neymar wanted to leave Parc des Princes, while admitting the Ligue 1 champions did not want to sell him, according to media reports.

PSG responded by saying they would sanction the Brazilian for missing the start of pre-season training last Monday, even though the player's father said Neymar's delayed return had been agreed in advance so he could be present for Brazil's victory in the Copa America.

Neymar's video also contained a Biblical passage in Portuguese, from the Book of Isaiah, that was apparently aimed at his critics.

It began: "No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn."

France forward&nbsp;Griezmann, 28, rejected a move to Barcelona last year but announced in May that he was leaving Atletico, where he has spent the last five seasons since signing from Real Sociedad in 2014.

Barca have been trying to lure&nbsp;Griezmann&nbsp;to the Nou Camp since November 2017, but the forward signed a new five-year deal with Atletico in June 2018 that had a €200 million buy-out clause, which dropped to €120 million on July 1 this year.

Atletico said that&nbsp;Griezmann's May 14 announcement that he was leaving the club is proof a deal had already been struck between the player and Barcelona before his buy-out clause dropped.

"Atletico Madrid considers that the deposited amount is insufficient to cover (Griezmann's) buyout clause, since it is obvious that the agreement between the player and FC Barcelona was closed before the clause was reduced from 200 million euros to 120 million euros," the club said in a statement.

"It was also prior to the date on which the clause was modified the communication that the player made on May 14 announcing his disassociation from the club.

"Atletico Madrid believes the termination of the contract happened before the end of the last season due to facts, acts and demonstrations made by the player, and therefore has already initiated procedures it has deemed appropriate to protect their rights and lawful interests."

Barca's long-running pursuit of the Frenchman, who scored 133 goals in all competitions for Atletico, has been the worst-kept secret in Spanish football.

The champions announced his signing in a statement earlier on Friday, in which they revealed his new five-season contract included an €800 million buyout clause.

"FC Barcelona has paid the €120 million buyout clause to release&nbsp;Antoine&nbsp;Griezmann&nbsp;from Atletico Madrid," Barcelona said.

The capture of the France striker adds further firepower to a Barca strikeforce already containing Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez and could yet be bolstered further by the return of Neymar Jr.

Spanish media reports say the Brazil forward is keen to return to Barca and regrets leaving the club for Paris St Germain in 2017 for a world record €222 million.

Spanish champions Barcelona announced the signing of striker Antoine Griezmann on Friday for €120 million ($135 million) from a fuming Atletico Madrid, who said the Catalan club had not paid enough to trigger the player's release clause.

Real Madrid unseated Manchester United as the world's most valuable soccer club, according to the annual list published by business magazine Forbes on Wednesday.

Real Madrid, who in 2018 won the Champions League for a third consecutive year, were valued at $4.24 billion, up 9% from a year ago, Forbes said.

Barcelona were second on the list with a value of $4 billion while Manchester United, who held top spot in each of the last two years, were third with a value of $3.8 billion.

Bayern Munich ($3 billion) and Manchester City ($2.69 billion) rounded out the top five.

The 20 most valuable soccer clubs this year are worth an average of $1.75 billion, up 34% from last year, a jump Forbes attributes to sponsors paying more money to attach themselves to these teams.

"Soccer team values are increasing because companies continue to increase the amount of money they pay teams for shirt and kit rights, and sponsorships," said Michael Ozanian, assistant managing editor at Forbes.

"Soccer is the most popular team sport in the world and soccer players are running billboards for brands."
