Barcelona suffered from a mental block during the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool which knocked them out of the Champions League, having been scarred by the memory of a similar collapse to AS Roma last year, defender Gerard Pique has said.

Pique, who has won Europe's elite competition with Barca three times but not since 2015, described the semi-final second leg defeat which wiped out his side's 3-0 first-leg win as "a nightmare", saying it would take years to get over.

"You could see that the team just wasn't functioning, they were putting us under pressure and what had happened last year(against Roma) was very present in our minds," Pique said in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais published on Friday.

"I'm sure it was a mental block, but we also didn't play good football. We lacked everything. They pressed us very high, they were very intense, and Anfield also played its role. We just couldn't cope, sometimes it happens."

Barca have romped to a second La Liga title in a row and could complete another successive double when they play Valencia in Saturday's Copa del Rey final.

But just as last season's 3-0 defeat at Roma after a 4-1 home win threatened to overshadow their campaign, Barca's failure to win what Lionel Messi called "that beautiful and desired trophy" has also had a terrible impact on the team.

Pique said his teammates had a sense of deja vu during the game at Anfield, which unfolded in a remarkably similar way to events at the Stadio Olimpico last year.

"I think on a mental level some of us were affected by what had happened in Rome, it was so recent. The first goal came very quickly, and suddenly the image of Rome appeared," Pique said, recalling Sadio Mane's goal in the 15th minute at Anfield.

"Then they scored two more goals in quick succession and it starts to look too similar to what happened a year ago. It was very tough, it has been very difficult to pull ourselves back up because the days go by and you can't forget this defeat.

"It's a slip up which is going to last a long time, but we need to take a step forward," Pique added.

"We cannot keep torturing ourselves. It was a nightmare and we have to deal with it because it could happen again.

"But we have to understand why it happened and let it help us in the future because we want to lift the Champions League again."

Barca haunted by ghosts of Rome in 'nightmare' loss to Liverpool: Gerard Pique

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/over-reliance-on-messi-or-over-confidence-what-went-wrong-for-barcelona-against-liverpool-217025">Barcelona</a> president Josep Maria Bartomeu says coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ernesto-valverde-never-thought-about-resigning-218447">Ernesto Valverde</a> remains the right man to lead the club next season despite overseeing successive calamitous Champions League exits.

Valverde has signed a new contract with Barca until 2020 with the option of another season and has won back-to-back La Liga titles with the Catalans as well as taking his side to the Copa del Rey final, where they will face Valencia on May 25.

His position has come under scrutiny though after his side spurned a 3-0 lead over Liverpool by losing 4-0 at Anfield in a semi-final second leg.

The result felt even more painful after they threw away a three-goal lead over AS Roma to exit last year's competition.

"Valverde said it the other day, he has the support of the president and the board. He is the coach we want," Bartomeu told reporters at a book promotion on Thursday.

"This is a long-term project, he has a contract and we are very happy with him. We're already planning for next season, we've signed some players and after the final we'll have more discussions."

Bartomeu said the club was still reeling from the painful Champions League elimination but he emphasised the importance of winning the league title and urged the players to focus on beating Valencia in the Copa del Rey final.

"The first objective is always to win La Liga and then the Cup and Champions League. It has been a great season, we won the league with games to spare but we all want more," he added.

"Next up we have the Copa del Rey final and we go into after a very painful defeat, but now is the time to come to terms with it and get our spirit back."

Spain's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/la-liga-posts-record-financial-figures-217311">La Liga</a> is in danger because of a proposal from European soccer body UEFA to create a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Champions+League">Champions League</a> that would be largely closed off to outsiders, its president Javier Tebas said Monday.

UEFA is working with the European Club Association (ECA), whose members includes Europe's biggest clubs, to redesign the Champions League from 2024 onwards but has not given any details on proposals, saying discussions are at an early stage.

However, sources with knowledge of the matter have told Reuters that there was a concrete proposal to create a European league with three divisions, with promotion and relegation between each.

The top division would be the equivalent of the current Champions League and would have 32 teams, but divided into four groups of eight rather then eight groups of four. This would mean teams playing 14 group stage games instead of six.

Twenty-four teams would qualify automatically for the following year's competition with four more promoted from

the second tier, currently the Europa League, and only four places open to champions of Europe's 54 domestic leagues.

This would break with the tradition that teams qualify for European competition through their domestic leagues.

"They are talking about a reform of the Champions, but really it is a new competition. The (domestic) leagues have been the way of qualifying for the Champions League but that won't be the case any more," Tebas said during a progamme on the Gol television channel.

"A number of clubs will be established who are always among the 32. On a scale out of 10, my level of worry is seven to eight."

"Is La Liga in danger? Yes, without doubt. UEFA can't do this and we want to convince other institutions that this cannot go ahead. We are working on a strategy."

Referring to the proposed competition as a Super League, he added, "The broadcast rights in Europe will change. There will be less money to share around the other clubs....and, in four or five years, the inequality will be enormous."

Last week, Lars-Christer Olsson, head of the European Leagues umbrella grouping which includes La Liga, said the current situation was more worrying than in the 1990s, when the top clubs threatened to form a breakaway league.

"The problem is that the discussions are taking place between the clubs and UEFA and that would mean a closed league under the umbrella of UEFA," he said.

Both Olsson and Tebas have said that only a small number of big clubs are in favour of the reported UEFA proposals.

UEFA could not immediately be reached for comment.

Spain's football league, La Liga, announced on Thursday that their clubs had posted record revenue of €4.479 billion ($5.01 billion) for the 2017-18 season.

The number marks a 20.6 per cent growth from the previous campaign (€3.6 billion) and therefore becomes the best in the competition's history.

Crucially, it has not been bloated by a new TV deal given the figures come from the second of a three-year domestic cycle on audio-visual rights, which will come up for renewal in the 2019-20 season.

The current figure of audio-visual turnover surpassed the €1.5 billion mark for the first time in this set of financial results.

Commercial revenue - up 34.1 per cent with an €838m turnover - and revenue from player transfers - up 104.3 to 1.02 billion - were the two main contributors to the league's strong annual growth, with higher sums forecast next year.

La Liga's professional structure means it produces an impact on Spain's national GDP equivalent to almost 1.4 per cent, employing 185,000 people both directly and indirectly with a tax contribution of more than €4 billion per year.

La Liga posts record financial figures

Lionel Messi fittingly sealed Barcelona's 26th La Liga title on Saturday by coming off the bench to score the goal in a 1-0 win over Levante in front of a jubilant Nou Camp crowd, who celebrated a remarkable eighth league crown in 11 years.

Barca's captain decided the game and the title in the 61st minute as he received a header from Arturo Vidal, effortlessly freeing himself from two defenders with his right foot before using his left to plant the ball into the far bottom corner.

He had started on the bench along with Sergio Busquets as Ernesto Valverde had one eye on Wednesday's Champions League semi-final first leg at home to Liverpool.

But the coach inevitably turned to his talisman with the game goalless at halftime, despite the best efforts of Philippe Coutinho, who had numerous attempts on goal and clanged the crossbar before being withdrawn for Messi.

The Argentine needed just over a quarter of an hour to have the desired effect, lighting up the stadium with his 34th league goal of the season in 32 appearances.

With 13 assists to his name as well he has his footprints on more than half his side's 86 goals.

"Messi was always ready to come on and I always knew he was going to play but we also have a game on Wednesday. He has to stay active and he scores goals everywhere he goes and he has won us this title," Valverde told reporters.

"It is very difficult to win this title, without the amount of teams we are competing with, especially with this margin.

"We have done it two years in a row and it's fantastic to see the fans celebrate the title like this at home. Now we want to go and celebrate it."

Cries of "champions" rang out from the 91,000 supporters crammed into the Nou Camp but Barca's players dropped their concentration and Jose Luis Morales should have levelled for the visitors but blasted over the bar.

NARROW ADVANTAGE

Levante also hit the post in the final stages as Barca were left clinging on to their narrow advantage deep into stoppage-time but relief came when they cleared a corner and the final whistle sounded.

"They turned us upside down and I think that was down to nerves. They had a few chances but it was incredible when they hit the post," Valverde added.

"We couldn't kill the game off and they started to believe while we get more nervous but luckily we were able to see out the win."

Messi, who became the first player to win 10 La Liga crowns with Barca and only the third player from any club to do so, hoisted the trophy into the sky before joining his team mates and their children on a lap of honour.

"Eight out of 11 titles will be very difficult to repeat because La Liga is so difficult, it has the best teams, the ones that are always fighting for European trophies so what we have done is historic," said midfielder Busquets.

Barca lead the standings on 83 points after 35 games, an unassailable nine clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid with three matches left because they have a superior head-to-head record this season.

Valverde's side have now taken the first step in their bid to win a third treble in a decade.

After their Champions League semi-final against Liverpool when they will be bidding to reach the final of Europe's premier club competition for the first time since 2015, Barcelona play Valencia in the Copa del Rey final on May 25.

"The players and the fans should enjoy this night without going over the top," added Ivan Rakitic.

"When we wake up tomorrow we have to prepare for what comes next, we have to think about Liverpool, who have an incredible team and a brilliant coach."

News brief: Big stories of the day

Real Madrid dropped points for the third time in seven games since Zinedine Zidane's return as they were held to a 0-0 draw away to Getafe in La Liga on Thursday, which harmed their neighbours' hopes of a top-four finish.

The draw left third-placed Real an embarrassing 15 points behind runaway leaders Barcelona and six back from second-placed Atletico Madrid after 34 games.

Getafe, who have never played in the Champions League, clung on to fourth spot but are level on 55 points with Sevilla, who thrashed Rayo Vallecano 5-0 earlier on Thursday.

Zidane again made several changes to his side as he prepares to shake up the squad ahead of next season after a woeful campaign on all fronts, starting without Marcelo, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio.

Teenager Brahim Diaz was Real's liveliest performer in what was another underwhelming performance from the deposed European champions, who needed goalkeeper Keylor Navas to make an impressive double save to thwart Jaime Mata in the second half.

Getafe had a half-hearted penalty appeal waved away late in the game when Mata went down after a challenge from Dani Carvajal in an end-to-end finish to what was a scrappy encounter with few clear chances.

Getafe had a half-hearted penalty appeal waved away late in the game when Mata went down after a challenge from Dani Carvajal in an end-to-end finish to what was a scrappy encounter with few clear chances.

Underwhelming Real Madrid held to stalemate at Getafe

Barcelona can clinch the Liga title with victory at home to relegation-threatened Levante on Saturday -- the first step in what they hope will be a clean sweep of trophies this season.

Ernesto Valverde's side are nine points clear of Atletico Madrid with each club having four games left and Barca, who have the better head-to-head record, could be champions before kick-off at the Nou Camp if Atleti lose at home to Real Valladolid.&nbsp;

Should second-placed Atletico draw, a point against Levante would be enough for Barcelona to clinch their 26th league title and eighth in 11 years in front of their supporters, underlining their dominance of Spanish soccer for more than a decade.

They will not receive the trophy though until their final home game of the season against Getafe on May 12.

The Catalans began the season by winning the Spanish Super Cup and, assuming they win the league, could lift a third domestic trohpy when they face Valencia in the Copa del Rey final on May 25.&nbsp;

The prize they covet most though is the Champions League, which Real Madrid have dominated in the last three seasons, especially with the final taking place in the Spanish capital.

Valverde can afford to rest players against Levante ahead of next week's Champions League semi-final first leg at home to Liverpool, which will provide the high watermark of a season in which no-one has come close to challenging his side in La Liga.

FRONT-RUNNERS

Barca have led from the front since early December, when they crept ahead of Sevilla and Atletico as Real Madrid endured a nightmarish season and were not considered realistic title rivals until a burst of form in February.

Barca soon knocked their biggest rivals back out of the title race though by marching 12 points clear of them with a 1-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu in March.

Atletico could not be written off until Barca overpowered them in April with a 2-0 win which took the Catalans 11 points clear at the top and began a procession towards retaining the title, which they also won at a canter last season.

"We're very happy with how we`ve worked throughout the season, now we cannot wait for Saturday so we can become champions at our home in front of our fans," said Sergio Busquets after Barca`s 2-0 win at Alaves on Tuesday.&nbsp;

"What we have done in the last few years is historical."

Barca have only lost twice this season, with their last defeat coming in early November at the hands of Real Betis.

"We deserve this title, we have been the best team throughout the season," added Barca midfielder Carles Alena.

On Sunday, Real Madrid make the short trip to struggling Rayo Vallecano, while Getafe visit Real Sociedad in their bid to secure a top-four finish for the first time.

Title homecoming awaits untouchable Barcelona

Barcelona have one hand firmly on the La Liga title after winning 2-0 at Alaves on Tuesday, leaving them 12 points clear at the top of the table with four games to play.

Should second-place Atletico Madrid lose at Valencia on Wednesday or against Real Valladolid on Saturday, Barcelona will be champions before they face Levante that evening.

With one eye on next week's Champions League semi-final against Liverpool, Ernesto Valverde picked a side with Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Arthur among other regular starters, on the bench.

After a turgid first half, Barcelona stepped up a gear in the second and midfielder Carles Alena sent the Catalans ahead at Mendizorroza after 54 minutes.

Arturo Vidal and Sergio Roberto combined well, the latter threading a pass through to Alena which Luis Suarez cleverly stepped over, allowing the 21-year-old to coolly slot home.

Suarez added the second from the penalty spot after Tomas Pina's handball was spotted by VAR, putting Barcelona in touching distance of their 26th league title.

Samuel Umtiti bundled home from an offside position but after VAR ruled out the defender's goal, the handball by Pina was penalised.

Valverde brought on Messi, Alba and Arthur in the final stages to help Barcelona see the game out, with title celebrations poised for Saturday, or sooner. Alaves are eighth.

"We started well, we could have gone ahead in the first half," said Alena.

"It took a superb move (to break through), a great ball by Sergi that Luis left for me. He saw me coming behind him and he’s such a world class player that he was aware of my movement.

"Let's wait and see what Atletico do tomorrow. If they fail, we're champions. I think we deserve this title, we've been the best team."

Earlier, Huesca beat Eibar 2-0 to move 19th, while Real Valladolid climbed to 15th with a 1-0 win over Girona, leaving their visitors in 17th place.

Barcelona on verge of Liga title after beating Alaves

Karim Benzema netted a second-half hat-trick as Real Madrid got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in La Liga on Sunday.

The Frenchman increased his tally to 21 league goals this season – the first time he has achieved the total since 2015-16 – and now has 10 goals in his last seven appearances for the club.

Victory left Real, who had drawn with Leganes in their last outing, in third place on 64 points. They are 13 points behind leaders Barcelona and four behind city rivals Atletico.

Zinedine Zidane once again left Gareth Bale on the bench, with Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio supporting Benzema in attack.

They initially cut frustrated figures throughout an opening period of few chances, with the Bernabeu crowd voicing their frustration.

However, the fans were soon serenading Benzema two minutes after the break when he opened the scoring.

Jesus Vallejo produced a brilliant last-ditch tackle on Inaki Williams and Real sprung a trademark counter attack, with Asensio leading the charge before centering for Benzema to nod in.

"We all know how good Karim is and what he brings to the side, whether he’s scoring or not,” team mate Marcelo told BeIN Sports.

"He’s one of our leaders. I’m delighted with the goals but I know Karim will be more happy with the fact we have won. We really needed a win more than simply just scoring goals.”

He doubled his tally 15 minutes from the end, heading in Luka Modric’s corner after a calamitous misjudgement from Bilbao goalkeeper Iago Herrerin.

Substitute Brahim Diaz went close for the home side in the closing stages before Bale chipped a one-on-one over the bar.

The Welshman made amends moments later, latching onto another error from Herrerin, who had rushed out of his box in an attempt to clear the through ball.

His weak header dropped at the feet of Bale, who teed up Benzema to complete his hat-trick by firing into an empty net.

"It’s always tough at the end of the season when you’re not playing for anything. We need to always get up for these games,” Marcelo added.

"The first-half was tough, but we showed face and we were much better after the break than in the first period.”

Bilbao have 46 points and stay seventh, three points behind Valencia – who play Real Betis later on Sunday – in the final Europa League spot.

Cristiano Ronaldo is "1,000 per cent" certain to remain at Juventus, he said after they <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/juventus-win-eighth-consecutive-serie-a-title-212170">clinched the Serie A title on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Fiorentina.</a>

"I'm really happy to have won the Italian title in my first season here. It has been a great season for this Juventus, we also won the Italian Supercup," said the Portuguese forward, who has scored 19 league goals.

"We didn't do so well in the Champions League but there is always next year," he added. "I will stay, 1,000 per cent."

Defender Leonardo Bonucci, meanwhile, explained how Juventus had managed to bounce back from their shock Champions League quarter-final exit against Ajax on Tuesday when they lost 2-1 at home and went out 3-2 on aggregate.

"I'm sorry about the Champions but we transformed the disappointment into anger and energy. This Scudetto, the eighth in a row, is something unique," he said. "We really want to celebrate, this success makes the season's sacrifice all worth it.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri said winning with five games to spare was a "testimony to our great season".

"We put aside the elimination that brought us disappointment and bitterness. Fortunately, we had this match that allowed us to close the championship," said the 51-year-old who has been in charge for the last five campaigns.

Allegri said his team, who fell behind after six minutes, needed to deal better with setbacks.

"We came from Tuesday's disappointment, then entered the field and conceded a goal," he said. "We have to work on dealing with the unexpected, on Tuesday we suffered four devastating counter-attacks, today we did the same after we conceded the goal."

He said injuries had prevented Juventus from producing better performances.

"In general, during the season, we were unable to find continuity," he said. "There were constant new injuries and recurring fitness problems, so at times I had only 14 players to train with. Despite it all, we won by a big advantage.”

Barcelona closed in on the La Liga title on Saturday after earning a hard-fought 2-1 win over Real Sociedad at the Nou Camp, with goals from defenders Clement Lenglet and Jordi Alba restoring their nine-point lead at the top of the table.

Barca lead the standings on 77 points after 33 games, comfortably clear of nearest challengers Atletico Madrid who won 1-0 at Eibar earlier in the day.

French centre back Lenglet scored his first league goal for the Catalans to break the deadlock against the stubborn visitors right at the end of the first half with a crashing header from Ousmane Dembele's corner.

Sociedad were rewarded for their intelligent display when forward Juanmi equalised in the 62nd minute, sliding in to meet an incisive pass from Mikel Merino and diverting it past Barca's Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

But Barca hit back almost immediately when Lionel Messi picked out Alba, who did his best impression of the Argentine by cutting in from the left wing and producing a magnificent curling finish into the top corner.

The Catalans will be crowned champions for the 26th time if they beat Alaves on Tuesday and Levante next Saturday. They could clinch the title as soon as Wednesday if they win against Alaves and Atletico lose to Valencia.

Coach Ernesto Valverde had named three changes to the team that outclassed Manchester United 3-0 on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League and in the early stages it looked as if his side were still recovering from their exploits.

"Today was a little bit harder, we just made a huge effort (against United) but we tried to play the same way and in the second half we were a little better," said match-winner Alba.

"The team is responding very well, we want to be champions as soon as possible. It seems very easy now because we have a big advantage but people need to appreciate the work we have done."

Sociedad had given Barca an early fright in the corresponding fixture back in September before losing out and the Basques again held their own in the first half here.

They stifled Barca by sitting deep and outnumbering them in midfield and they should have taken the lead when Juanmi got a clear sight of goal, but he was denied by Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Willian Jose ballooned the rebound over the bar.

Barca became bolder as halftime approached and almost found a breakthrough through Luis Suarez, who was thwarted by an outstanding save from Sociedad's Geronimo Rulli.

The Argentine keeper was powerless to stop Lenglet's thumping header though, and there was also little he could do to prevent Alba putting Barca back in front so soon after Juanmi had deservedly pulled the visitors level.

Spain's premier football league, La Liga, conducted a three-day training workshop 'Train the Trainer' for Indian coaches from April 13 to 15th here.

In association with India On Track (IOT), 48 La Liga Football Schools' India coaches from across the nation were brought here with an objective of increasing their knowledge and showing them the LaLiga systems and methodology.

The workshops were conducted by La Liga Football Schools Technical Director, Javier Cabrera, Spanish coordinator Saul Vazquez with the support of La Liga Sports Coordinator, Juan Florit.

The training was delivered to provide Indian coaches with a theoretical and practical understanding of maximising the potential of aspiring footballers in the country. The coaches also got an opportunity to interact one-on-one with the LaLiga trainers and gain a valuable experience which will be translated to the grounds and increase the level of training of students.

"Through the La Liga Football Schools initiative, we want to see the tangible and long-term impact on football in India. By imparting the knowledge of Spanish techniques and methods, we want to enable these coaches to train the next big global football star from India," said Jose Antonio Cachaza, Managing Director, LaLiga India.&nbsp;

"A talented sportsperson owes their success to a great teacher. This thought is the basis of the Train the Trainer Programme. For longevity and sustained growth of football in India, it is imperative to bring the best global coaching practices to our coaches here, and to empower them with the right tools to guide the next many generations of footballers to come," said Rohan Chopra, Chief Operating Officer, IOT.&nbsp;

Real Madrid stumbled to a 1-1 La Liga draw at Leganes on Monday, the latest disappointing result in a nightmare season for the European champions.

Zinedine Zidane's side, who are third in the table and 13 points behind leaders Barcelona, were uninspired against local rivals Leganes.

Madrid, who were also knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage by Ajax Amsterdam, put in the kind of lethargic performance which has plagued their season, with Marco Asensio and Raphael Varane missing good first-half chances.

Jonathan Silva fired Leganes ahead in the 45th minute with their first chance of the game, driving home from the edge of the box.

Karim Benzema equalised at the start of the second half and Marcelo saw a shot tipped away as Madrid enjoyed a short period in ascendancy.

Leganes, 11th in the table, went close to winning the game but Youssef En-Nesyri had a goal correctly disallowed for offside.

Madrid, playing on Monday for the first time in three years, in a slot reserved for teams not involved in Europe, produced a suitably subdued performance.

"It's a really tricky season for everyone, it's hard to explain and we all feel sad, but the situation is complicated," said Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

"In this club there's always pressure and that cannot be an excuse. We have to be mentally prepared. We are proud of this shirt and we love it."

La Liga: Real Madrid stumble again in disappointing draw at Leganes

La Liga leaders Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by basement club Huesca on Saturday as coach Ernesto Valverde made sweeping changes to his line-up ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final decider against Manchester United.

The draw means second-placed Atletico Madrid could close the 12-point gap with Barcelona, who are on 74 points, if they beat Celta Vigo later on Saturday.

With the title practically assured after last weekend's 2-0 win over Atletico, Valverde fielded a radically different side to the team that won 1-0 at Old Trafford in Wednesday's first leg, making 10 changes and handing three players their league debuts.

Midfielder Riqui Puig was one of the debutants and the 19-year-old produced the best moment of an uneventful first half, picking out Ousmane Dembele with a wonderful pass but the forward dragged his shot wide.

Brazilian forward Malcom struck the post early in the second half and team mate Carles Alena missed the target from the rebound in Barca's best spell after the interval, while substitutes Philippe Coutinho, Jordi Alba and Arthur Melo could not improve the leaders' attacking threat when they came on.

Huesca desperately needed a win to keep up their slim hopes of avoiding relegation but they struggled to make much of an impact and stay rooted to the bottom of the standings with 25 points from 32 games.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone cursed his side's bad luck with refereeing decisions in games against Barcelona after Diego Costa was sent off in a 2-0 defeat at the Nou Camp on Saturday which practically handed the La Liga title to the Catalans.

Costa was shown a straight red card in the 28th minute of the top-of-the-table clash for a verbal outburst at referee Jesus Gil Manzano, who said in his report that the striker had made a derogatory comment about his mother.

Barca finally found a breakthrough with a wonderful curled strike from Luis Suarez in the 85th minute and Lionel Messi sealed the win with a goal moments later.

"I asked the referee if what he said was so bad because we have seen Barca players do the same thing, saying things right in the referee's face and they did not get sent off, they got away with it," Simeone told a news conference.

"If Costa really said what the referee claims he did then he was correctly sent off, but we must be doing something wrong as we have had seven players sent off in 11 games.

"I remember we had Fernando Torres, a global icon, sent off here for making two fouls."

Atletico midfielder Koke also aired his frustration.

"We were doing so well until the red card but all the small details went their way," he said.

"Whenever we come here something strange happens, we've had a lot of red cards against Barca and not all of them have been fair."

Atletico coped well with 10 men and had one glorious opportunity to break the deadlock in the second half from a free kick but midfielder Rodrigo headed narrowly over the bar.

"The plan was to close space through the middle and invite the opponents to play on the wings so we could have a tiny possibility of winning," Simeone added.

"We were better in the second half, we made a huge effort and I felt we were in control until the final five minutes when Suarez got the breakthrough. I'm left encouraged by many things which my team did today."

Atletico Madrid forward Alvaro Morata is almost certainly out of Saturday's top-of-the-table clash at La Liga leaders Barcelona after the capital club said in a statement he had sprained his ankle in Tuesday's 2-0 win at home to Girona.

Atletico did not state how long the Spain striker would be sidelined but reports in Spanish media ruled him out of action for two weeks, adding to the team's shortages in attack ahead of the game that could make or break their title ambitions.

Atletico trail Barca by eight points with eight games left but Diego Costa faces a battle to be fit after missing the Girona win with a muscle problem, while France winger Thomas Lemar is not expected back from injury for another two weeks.

The club's top scorer this season Frenchman Antoine Griezmann and Croatian forward Niko Kalinic are coach Diego Simeone's only fit forwards for the trip to the Nou Camp, where Atletico have not won in any competition since 2006.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said on Tuesday he cannot envisage his side parting with France defender Raphael Varane but he could not give any guarantees about the future of winger Gareth Bale.

Several media reports said last month that World Cup winner Varane was looking to leave Madrid after eight seasons in the Spanish capital, in which he has won four Champions League crowns and two La Liga titles.

Speaking at a news conference ahead of Real's La Liga visit to Valencia on Wednesday, Zidane dismissed reports about Varane's supposed departure.

"I cannot imagine a future without Varane and I don't want to. He's a young player, he has been here for eight years and he is doing very well," Zidane said.

"I'm not going to comment on what is being said outside. The important thing is what the player tells me and for now he's at the best club in the world, he's won a lot of things and I think he is in a good place."

The future of Bale, the club's record signing, is more uncertain as he was again subjected to boos from Real's own supporters during Sunday's 3-2 win over Huesca, in which he missed an opportunity to score from close range.

Zidane admitted the supporters were not helping the Welshman but he refused to clarify if Bale would remain at the club next season.

"I don't know how it affects him but booing a player is never good, they also booed me but you have to accept it and every player who is here has the character to deal with it," Zidane said.

"We'll decide the future of Gareth and other players at the end of the season, we've got nine games left and then we'll see. I can confirm that we will have to make changes next season but now is not the time to talk about it."

Madrid are third in the La Liga standings with nine games left of the campaign, 12 points adrift of runaway leaders Barcelona. They are already out of the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

Pope Francis said during an interview to a Spanish TV channel&nbsp;that Barcelona's star footballer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Lionel+Messi">Lionel Messi</a> is great but "he is not God".

Lionel Messi currently tops the European Top Scorer standings with 31 goals from 27 appearances ahead of Paris-Saint Germain's Kylian Mbappe.&nbsp;

Messi has scored 16 goals in 12 Champions League appearances to help Barca reach the quarterfinals in the ongoing season and also helped his side reach the Copa del Rey final.&nbsp;

'I didn't give my son his debut, but to a player of the squad' - Zidane

Real Madrid boss <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Zinedine+Zidane">Zinedine Zidane</a> has said that he 'counts' with on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Karim+Benzema">Karim Benzema</a> on staying at Bernabeu ahead the next season.&nbsp;

Karim Benzema played a part in two goals before coming through with one of his own in the 89th minute against La Liga club Huesca on Sunday and keep up coach Zinedine Zidane's perfect start since the Frenchman returned to the club.&nbsp;

The last-gasp win left Madrid third in the standings with 57 points after 29 games, while second-placed Atletico Madrid have 59 and runaway leaders Barcelona are on 69.&nbsp;

In the post-match presentation, Zidane praised Benzema, saying, "He is being our player in the last ten years. He is doing a good job. I think this is his best year and we are very happy with him."

He further added, "I am counting with him (for the next year). We still have nine games to play and for us, the most important is to end the season in the best possible way.&nbsp;

"We will see what happens next, but Karim (Benzema) is our player and I don't think that's going to change."&nbsp;

Huesca took a shock lead in the third minute of their first league visit to the Bernabeu when Cucho Hernandez smashed a cross from Ezequiel Avila past goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who was surprisingly brought into the team by his father.

"It was a crazy game but great for those who came to watch it," Zidane told reporters.

"We suffered a lot but you have to congratulate our opponents for how they played, they are bottom and they put in a great performance. They were causing us problems right until the end but we got a good result which we needed for our morale."&nbsp;

Zidane also praised Luka, saying, "I am very happy for him and for his debut here (at the Santiago Bernabeu), a game that we won. He is Luca (Zidane), the third goalkeeper."

"Thibaut (Courtois) was not as his best, and after the international break I wanted to give some rest to Keylor (Navas) and gave the opportunity to Luca. I think everything ended well," concluded Zidane.&nbsp;

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick of the highest quality as Barcelona avenged their defeat by Real Betis earlier in the season to move 10 points clear at the top of La Liga.

The Barcelona captain was in superb form scoring his 51st hat-trick with the first goal being a 20-yard free-kick before he converted Luis Suarez's backheel pass with a toe-poked strike.

Suarez scored a fine individual effort while Loren Moron grabbed Betis' only goal with a superb finish.

Messi, however, was applauded by Real Betis fans after scoring a brilliant third goal and thanked the opposition supporters for the kind gesture.

“I don’t remember being applauded by rival fans for a goal before. I am very grateful for the response of the supporters,” Messi said.

“I don’t know, I was lucky that both of them went in but above all we got the three points. We knew that we had a good opportunity to put a little distance between ourselves and Atlético and we couldn’t fail.”

Real Madrid has tougher time against Valladolid than 4-1 score suggests

Admired around the world over for the last decade as the great entertainers of European soccer, La Liga leaders Barcelona have quietly turned into masters of defending in recent weeks, led by steely centre half Gerard Pique.

The Catalans, who hold a seven-point lead over nearest challengers Atletico Madrid heading into Saturday's game at home to struggling Rayo Vallecano, have kept five clean sheets in their last six games, which bodes well for their title run in.

The 32-year-old, who is in his 11th year with Barca since returning to his boyhood club from Manchester United, has been at the forefront of this new found passion for defending.

Along with French defender Clement Lenglet, Pique was the hero of last week's 1-0 win over Real Madrid which opened up a 12-point gap between Barca and their historic rivals and followed a 3-0 win at Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Barca were also watertight at the back in goalless draws with Athletic Bilbao and Olympique Lyonnais and a 1-0 win over Real Valladolid as their defence compensated for a short-lived dip in the form of strikers Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi.

Once regarded as too immature to become a true Barcelona great, Pique has become a wiser defender as his career has progressed and is no longer prone to the occasional lapses of concentration which he used to be criticised for.

If there is one concern about Pique, it is that playing every minute of the league campaign could catch up with him as the season enters its crucial stage and Barca battle to win a treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

He has benefitted from retiring from the Spain team, however, now returning refreshed after international breaks while his team mates and counterparts have crossed continents representing their nations.

Being a defender in a team brimming with so much attacking quality and stardust has meant that Pique's contributions have often gone under the radar, although he now seems to be earning respect from all corners of Spanish soccer.

He has even come in for praise from the sections of the press that are usually hostile towards Barca, with newspaper Marca saying he was "on fire" and had "turned into royalty" after his two towering displays against Real.

Pique and his fellow defenders are unlikely to feel the same pressure on Saturday, though, with struggling Rayo having lost their last 11 meetings with Barca, conceding 50 goals in the process.

Atletico host fellow Madrid side Leganes on Saturday but will be without influential players Koke and Diego Godin through suspension.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, visit Real Valladolid after their shock elimination from the Champions League to Ajax, which all but ensured they will end the season without a trophy.

Gerard Pique behind Barcelona's new found defensive steel

Barcelona&nbsp;won their second Clasico in four days on Saturday and Real Madrid might have to win the Champions League if Santiago Solari is to be in charge for the next one.

After knocking them out of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, Barca returned to the Santiago Bernabeu for a 1-0 victory that surely eliminates their greatest rivals from the title race too.

Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos locked heads after Ramos flung an arm into Messi's face but, despite the scoreline and a few half-chances, that was about the most trouble Madrid caused.&nbsp;

Messi would have been proud of Ivan Rakitic's delightful chip, a rare moment of precision that in the end settled another Clasico high on vigour but lacking in either real quality or rhythm.&nbsp;

"What we wanted was to deliver our best and to inflict damage on our rival," Barca coach Ernesto Valverde said. "We have done that."

The onus was on Madrid, not only to make amends for their defeat in midweek but to reduce the nine-point gap between them and La Liga's leaders.

Instead,&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;extended it to 12 and the way their players jumped up and down in front of the away fans after the final whistle suggested they felt this was a major hurdle overcome.

Barcelona&nbsp;also now own 96 victories in this fixture to Real Madrid's 95, the first time they have been in front in 87 years.

When Solari took over in November, his team were seven points adrift of the Catalans and the fact the deficit has almost doubled since might not reflect the improvement in performances.&nbsp;

But this was the first time Madrid have lost three in a row at home in 15 years and these are surely the matches president Florentino Perez will remember when he considers his coach's future next summer.

"You go through spells, sometimes everything goes for you and sometimes it doesn't," said Solari. "In these two games it hasn't."&nbsp;

All that realistically remains now is the Champions League, in which Madrid will carry a 2-1 lead into Tuesday's second leg at home to Ajax.

Europe has rescued them before and it also revived Gareth Bale, who endured another frustrating night on only his third start in 10 games.&nbsp;

Bale was largely anonymous again and when substituted in the second half, he departed not just to a scattering of whistles from the home crowd but a chorus.

"He tried, like the rest of the players," said Solari.

It took Busquets 89 seconds to be booked and only a few more for Bale to send the free-kick over the bar but Madrid started with purpose, like a team determined to right the wrongs of before.

Madrid fade

Their early impetus faded though as Barca, driven on by Messi, took control. Messi skipped through three players in midfield and was furious with Ousmane Dembele when he missed his late run into the box.

He then weaved in behind with the help of a Luis Suarez touch but, to everyone's surprise, the trademark lifted finish floated wide.

Rakitic showed him how to do it. He played the ball wide to Sergi Roberto, continued his run behind Ramos and received it back, before feathering a delightful chip over Thibaut Courtois.

Barca were comfortable but the game erupted on the stroke of half-time. Ramos won the ball from Messi but, with his arm outstretched, left it long enough to catch his opponent in the face. Messi pointed to his lip and then butted heads with Ramos but referee Alberto Mallenco saw nothing worthy of punishment.

Madrid pushed for an equaliser but their desperation showed. Benzema failed to connect while Vinicius Juniors' rushed shot was blocked.&nbsp;

Bale was hauled off just after the hour, replaced by Marco Asensio, and even Isco came on in the 76th minute, for his longest appearance since the end of January.&nbsp;

Raphael Varane might have snatched a late equaliser but his header was weak.&nbsp;Barcelona&nbsp;were left celebrating again.

Barcelona won their second Clasico in four days on Saturday and Real Madrid might have to win the Champions League if Santiago Solari is to be in charge for the next one. After knocking them out of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, Barca returned to the Santiago Bernabeu for a 1-0 victory that surely eliminates their greatest rivals from the title race too. Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos locked heads after Ramos flung an arm into Messi's face but, despite the scoreline and a few half-chances, that was about the most trouble Madrid caused. Messi would have been proud of Ivan Rakitic's delightful chip, a rare moment of precision that in the end settled another Clasico high on vigour but lacking in either real quality or rhythm. "What we wanted was to deliver our best and to inflict damage on our rival," Barca coach Ernesto Valverde said. "We have done that." The onus was on Madrid, not only to make amends for their defeat in midweek but to reduce the nine-point gap between them and La Liga's leaders. Instead, Barcelona extended it to 12 and the way their players jumped up and down in front of the away fans after the final whistle suggested they felt this was a major hurdle overcome. Barcelona also now own 96 victories in this fixture to Real Madrid's 95, the first time they have been in front in 87 years. When Solari took over in November, his team were seven points adrift of the Catalans and the fact the deficit has almost doubled since might not reflect the improvement in performances. But this was the first time Madrid have lost three in a row at home in 15 years and these are surely the matches president Florentino Perez will remember when he considers his coach's future next summer. "You go through spells, sometimes everything goes for you and sometimes it doesn't," said Solari. "In these two games it hasn't." All that realistically remains now is the Champions League, in which Madrid will carry a 2-1 lead into Tuesday's second leg at home to Ajax. Europe has rescued them before and it also revived Gareth Bale, who endured another frustrating night on only his third start in 10 games. Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde still refuses to write Real Madrid off from title race

An action-packed weekend in La Liga saw Lionel Messi put on yet another masterclass as Barcelona beat Sevilla in a thriller, while there was VAR controversy as Real Madrid limped past Levante thanks to two penalty calls.

Here are five talking points from the weekend's action in Spain.

REAL BENEFIT FROM VAR

The implementation of the video assistant referee (VAR) in La Liga this season has not been without controversy. Real had been critical of the system previously, but they are unlikely to have complaints now after two big decisions went their way.

While there could be little debate about the first – a handball by Enis Bardhi – the second provoked a spot kick that even Madrid-based sports newspaper AS described as 'dubious' on their front page.

Casemiro theatrically tumbled as Levante defender Cheick Doukoure swung at the ball. Replays appeared to show that the Ivorian had not made contact with the Real midfielder, but the VAR panel did not agree there was enough evidence to overturn the decision to award a penalty.

BALE SULK

Substitute Gareth Bale duly tucked away the controversial penalty, however made a point of refusing to celebrate the goal, shrugging off the advances of team mates before heading back to the centre circle.

Many speculate that the Welshman was making a point of showing his dissatisfaction at being named on the bench for the club's past two league games by coach Santiago Solari, who attempted to play down the incident after the 2-1 victory.

Local media have been quick to criticise Bale's actions and Solari now faces a big decision regarding his team selection with back-to-back Clasico fixtures against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday and La Liga next weekend.

MESSI MASTERCLASS

Sevilla must wonder what they have done to provoke Lionel Messi. The Argentine has put in some mesmerizing displays across his career, however the Andalusian outfit are his favourite victims.

Before Saturday's clash he had scored 33 times in 36 appearances against Sevilla. True to form, the Argentine netted a stunning hat-trick and provided an assist to help his side come from behind twice in a 4-2 win to keep their seven point cushion at the top of the table.

MORATA FINALLY GETS UNDERWAY

Since joining Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window, forward Alvaro Morata has seen two stunning strikes ruled out by VAR, leading some commentators to question whether his return to his boyhood club was doomed.

However, there was no taking his first goal for Atleti away from him on Sunday as he buried a sweetly struck left-footed volley into the bottom corner.

The Spain international celebrated ironically by making the referee's VAR signal much to the delight of the home crowd, who witnessed their side secure a first victory over Villarreal in eight attempts, dating back to 2015.

FAMILIAR TALE FOR VALENCIA

Marcelino's Valencia have greatly frustrated their fans throughout this campaign, and never more so than on Sunday. Away to Leganes, they took an early lead and looked comfortable, only to concede an 89th minute equaliser and go on to draw the game.

Remarkably, it was Valencia's 15th draw in 25 league matches this season. They have only lost four times – three fewer than third-placed Real Madrid. However, their inability to win games has seen them slip six points off the pace in the battle for the fourth and final Champions League spot.

Five talking points from the weekend in La Liga

Lionel Messi hit a sumptuous hat-trick, the 50th of his career, to inspire Barcelona to a 4-2 victory over Sevilla on Saturday and take them one step closer to winning La Liga.

Messi was supposed to be lacking fitness and Barca struggling for form but both delivered a resounding response at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, with two matches against Real Madrid just around the corner.

After scoring 11 goals in nine games, Messi's thigh strain had coincided with a dip by his own high standards, one goal in four prompting concerns that he was being pushed too far.

But the Argentinian was back to his scintillating best, this was his 44th treble for Barcelona, now the joint most for a Spanish club alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, rounded off by a trademark chip late on.&nbsp;

Luis Suarez needed a goal too after a disappointing performance against Lyon in midweek and he wrapped up the perfect afternoon by adding a fourth after Jesus Navas and Gabriel Mercado had twice put Sevilla ahead in the first half.&nbsp;

Sevilla's top-four hopes look increasingly uncertain but for Barcelona, this was one of the toughest tests left in their run-in, with perhaps the most difficult to come next weekend, against Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.&nbsp;

Real, who face Levante on Sunday, sit 12 points behind Barca and their best hope of a domestic trophy is surely now in beating them first on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey.

As well as a return to form for Messi and Suarez, there was a return to the team for Samuel Umtiti, the defender handed his first appearance in three months after recovering from a knee injury.&nbsp;

It was given an early test as Wissam Ben Yedder twisted him one way and then the other but Umtiti was quick on his feet and did well to make the block.&nbsp;

Sevilla had started at a furious pace and it was the speedy Navas that scored first, sprinting almost 78 metres to meet the end of a slick counter-attack.&nbsp;

Messi lost the ball and Ben Yedder set off through the centre, teeing up Navas on the right to find the far corner.&nbsp;

Messi soon made amends. Ivan Rakitic sent over a dangling cross, which he volleyed sweetly past Tomas Vaclik with his left foot.&nbsp;

The ball was flying from one end to the other as Umtiti stopped the lively Pablo Sarabia and Gerard Pique's blistering break forward was halted by his opposite number three, Sergi Gomez.&nbsp;

Sevilla scored next, just before half-time, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen's underhit clearance allowing Sarabia to scuttle down the right. He flicked the ball off the goal line and back to Mercado, who steered it into the net.&nbsp;

Ousmane Dembele came on and should have equalised, fluffing his finish after a cross from Suarez, who should have had a penalty when Simon Kjaer caught him late.

Messi provided the finishing touch. Again it came from the goalkeeper, Vaclik's punt falling straight to Rakitic. Dembele pulled back for Messi, who took one touch and curled it, this time right-footed, into the top corner.&nbsp;

Sevilla looked dead on their feet, their early intensity draining away, and Messi landed the knock-out blow. There was a hint of fortune as Carles Alena's shot deflected neatly into his path. Vaclik came out but Messi scooped it over his body and in.&nbsp;

Three times a scorer, there was still time for an assist. Messi chested and poked the ball through for Suarez, who lobbied to make it four.&nbsp;
