Acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda is back in competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival, with his first South Korean film which explores the country's controversial practice of "drop boxes" for unwanted babies.

The movie is one of two South Korean pictures competing for the Palme d'Or along with Park Chan-wook's 'Decision to Leave', after Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" became the country's first film to win the coveted honour in 2019.

Since then, more Korean-language productions have enjoyed explosive global success, from Netflix's "Squid Game" to Apple TV+'s "Pachinko".

Kore-eda, who won the top prize at Cannes in 2018 for his family drama "Shoplifters" -- about a group of Tokyo misfits and crooks who form a kind of alternative family -- is back with another tale delving into similar themes.

His new South Korean-produced film "Broker" looks at so-called baby boxes where mothers can anonymously abandon their newborns to avoid the stigma and hardship of being a single mother in a patriarchal society.

While researching the project, the Japanese filmmaker, who has been lauded for his sensitive, contemplative explorations of complex family relationships, met children at orphanages.

The youngsters, Kore-eda said, questioned whether, as unwanted babies, it would have been better not to be born.

Their question became the focus of the film, Kore-eda said.

"Baby boxes exist in Japan as well," Kore-eda said at a press conference in Seoul earlier this month, which he attended virtually.

"I wanted to portray the journey of a group of people -- some with good intentions and some with malice -- with various stories surrounding a baby who was left in a baby box."

- 'Naturalistic' -

The film is a collaboration between Kore-eda and a South Korean all-star cast, including top actors Song Kang-ho (Parasite), Gang Dong-won (Peninsula), and K-pop megastar Lee Ji-eun.

"It is a massive ensemble cast -- hard to think of a recent film that has had such a long list of high-profile names," Jason Bechervaise, a visiting professor at Korea University, told AFP.

Song, 55, has long been a favourite with leading South Korean film-makers, including Bong, who he collaborated with on 2019's Oscar-winning "Parasite".

Kore-eda said Song's previous performances were a key inspiration for "Broker".

The versatile actor has played a range of characters from a repressed Catholic priest who becomes a vampire to a Joseon-era king who starves his son to death.

In "Broker", Song plays a debt-ridden man who discovers an abandoned baby and volunteers to find him a new family -- in exchange for money.

"Song Kang-ho is such an expressive actor, whether that is expressing tension, comedy, or confusion," Brian Hu, a film professor at San Diego State University, told AFP.

"On the other hand, Kore-eda's work is so much more naturalistic, often treating professional actors as he might non-professional ones," he said.

"So this is not just a clash across cultures, but also across cinematic styles."

'Meticulous and calculated' - Kore-eda has defied geopolitical tension to build strong relationships with top South Korean talent, even visiting the Busan International Film Festival in 2019 during a trade war.

At the time, he said Japan and South Korea -- which have a long, complex history -- could "solve and overcome political problems" through solidarity.

"Kore-eda is obviously a much-admired film-maker so he is able to attract such talent," Bechervaise said.

"It's interesting that he has come to Korea to make his next film despite frosty ties."

Song said he had expected "meticulous and calculated" direction from Kore-eda, partly based on his own preconceived ideas about Japanese artists.

"But he really respected us and brought out our certain emotions in such a way that was really free, comfortable and inexhaustible."

Actress and K-pop star Lee -- also known as IU -- plays the young mother who abandons her newborn.

One of the most successful K-pop artists of her generation, the 28-year-old received rave reviews for her performance in 2018 television drama series "My Mister", where she played a heavily indebted young woman.

Kore-eda said he watched the series during the pandemic and was moved to tears by her performance, which made him decide to offer her the "Broker" role.

India continued to press hard and secured two penalty corners in quick succession but both the efforts went in vain.

Wion Wideangle: North Korea: the real Squid Game?

In his first public appearance in over a month, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un visited the northwestern city of Samjiyon, near China border, where his signature construction project is underway.

The North’s Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim visited the northern alpine city in Ryanggang Province to inspect progress on the final and the “third stage” of the development project, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

While KCNA did not give further details as to when Kim made the visit, it is the first report of public activity by the leader in 35 days, his longest absence since 2014. He last delivered a speech at an arms exhibition on October 11.

Kim praised officials for their “lofty loyalty, strong will and sweat” to push forward with the project and said the four-year construction proved “the iron will of our state to achieve prosperity our own way and with our own efforts”.

Located at the foot of Mount Paekdu, the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula, Samjiyon is known to be the birthplace of Kim Jong-un's late father and former leader Kim Jong-il.

The Samjiyon development was supposed to be completed in 2020 in time for the 75th anniversary of the ruling party's foundation, but failed to meet the deadline amid crippling sanctions and a prolonged border closure due to COVID-19.

The mass-scale project includes "the construction of dwelling houses for thousands of families, public and production buildings, educational facilities, a water supply and drainage system, roads, and afforestation and greening and power grid system". according to the KCNA.

North Korea elevated the status of Samjiyon from a county to a city after celebrating the completion of a major construction there in 2019 and has called for transforming the area into the "wealthiest" region in the country.

The latest visit marked Kim Jong-un's first public appearance reported in state media in more than a month, after he addressed a defence exhibition on October 11.

The 15th August is commemorated by Indian nationals as the day when India gained freedom from Imperial British control.

India isn't the only country that celebrates Independence Day on August 15th.

On the same day that India celebrates its 75th Independence Day, five other countries around the world will see a similar occurrence.

The Republic of Congo, South Korea, North Korea, Bahrain, and Liechtenstein all commemorate their independence on August 15.

Here's additional information on them:

Bahrain

On August 15, 1971, Bahrain proclaimed independence from British control following a United Nations poll of Bahraini citizens.

Following that, a friendship treaty was formed between the two parties, thus ending the prior pact.

Despite the fact that August 14 is the real day of independence, it is not commemorated on that day.

North Korea and South Korea

The only common national holiday observed by both North and South Korea, 'National Liberation Day of Korea' commemorates the end of the Japanese colonisation of the Korean Peninsula on August 15, 1945.

Gwangbokjeol is another name for the day (meaning Time of the Restoration of Light).

Three years later, Korea's first independent administrations were established.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo celebrates its independence on August 15, also known as Congolese National Day.

In the year 1960, the country gained full independence from France, exactly 80 years after it had been under French administration.

Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein, the world's sixth smallest country, celebrates its independence from German control on August 15 and has done so since 1866.

The day has been observed since 1940 and coincides with Prince Franz-Josef II's (the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein from 1938 until his death in 2009) birthday on August 16.

South Korean defender Kim Min-jae has been forced to withdraw from his country's squad for the men's Olympic football tournament after Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan refused to agree to his release.

Kim had been included in coach Kim Hak-bum's line-up as one of three permitted overage members, but clubs are not obligated to allow players to join their Olympic teams as the tournament is not held during an official FIFA window.

The Korean Football Association announced the 24-year-old central defender has been replaced by Park Ji-soo, who currently plays for South Korean army club Gimcheon Sangmu.

The Koreans, who are one of only two Asian nations to have won a medal in the men's Olympic tournament, have been drawn in Group B of the 16-team competition alongside New Zealand, Honduras and Romania, with games set to kick off on July 22.

Nuclear-armed North Korea is advancing on the front lines of cyberwarfare, analysts say, stealing billions of dollars and presenting a clearer and more present danger than its banned weapons programmes.

Pyongyang is under multiple international sanctions over its atomic bomb and ballistic missile programmes, which have seen rapid progress under North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

But while the world's diplomatic focus has been on its nuclear ambitions, the North has been quietly and steadily building up its cyber capabilities, and analysts say its army of thousands of well-trained hackers are proving to be just as dangerous.

"North Korea's nuclear and military programmes are long-term threats, but its cyber threats are immediate, realistic threats," said Oh Il-seok, a researcher at the Institute for National Security Strategy in Seoul.

Pyongyang's cyberwarfare abilities first came to global prominence in 2014 when it was accused of hacking into Sony Pictures Entertainment as revenge for "The Interview", a satirical film that mocked leader Kim.

The attack resulted in the posting of several unreleased movies online as well as a vast trove of confidential documents.

Since then the North has been blamed for a number of high-profile cyberattacks, including a $81 million heist from the Bangladesh Central Bank as well as the 2017 WannaCry global ransomware attack, which infected some 300,000 computers in 150 nations.

Pyongyang has denied any involvement, describing US allegations over WannaCry as "absurd" and a foreign ministry spokesman declaring: "We have nothing to do with cyberattacks."

But the US Justice Department in February indicted three North Koreans on charges of "participating in a wide-ranging criminal conspiracy to conduct a series of destructive cyberattacks".

In its 2021 Annual Threat Assessment Report, Washington acknowledged that Pyongyang "probably possesses the expertise to cause temporary, limited disruptions of some critical infrastructure networks" across the United States.

The North's cyber programme "poses a growing espionage, theft, and attack threat," said the document from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

It accused Pyongyang of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges, "probably to fund government priorities, such as its nuclear and missile programs".

'The best defence'

North Korea's cyber-programme dates back to at least the mid-1990s, when then-leader Kim Jong Il reportedly said "all wars in future years will be computer wars".

Today Pyongyang's 6,000-strong cyberwarfare unit, known as Bureau 121, operates from several countries including Belarus, China, India, Malaysia and Russia, according to a US military report published in July 2020.

Scott Jarkoff of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike rates them highly: "They are extremely sophisticated, dedicated, and capable of conducting advanced attacks."

Bureau 121 recruits are trained in different coding languages and operating systems at special establishments such as Mirim University, said former student Jang Se-yul, who defected in 2007.

Now known as the University of Automation, it takes in only 100 students a year from among the North's highest-scoring schoolchildren.

"We were taught that we had to be prepared against America's cyberwarfare capabilities," Jang told AFP.

"Ultimately, we were taught that we had to develop our own hacking programmes since attacking the enemy's operating system is the best defence."

Cyberwarfare is particularly appealing for small, poor countries like the North that are "outgunned in terms of equipment such as planes, tanks and other modern weapons systems", said Stimson Center researcher Martyn Williams.

"Hacking just requires a computer and Internet connection."

Keyboards over guns

Most state-sponsored hacking groups are mainly used for espionage purposes, but experts say North Korea is unusual in also deploying its cyber capabilities for financial gain.

Pyongyang has blockaded itself to protect against the coronavirus pandemic, adding to the pressure on its economy, and has for years sought to earn foreign currency by multiple means.

And Williams added: "Stealing it is a lot faster and potentially more lucrative than doing business, especially if you have skilled hackers."

The February US indictment accused the three North Koreans of stealing more than $1.3 billion worth of money and cryptocurrency from financial institutions and companies.

When it was issued Assistant Attorney General John Demers called North Korea's operatives "the world's leading bank robbers", adding they were "using keyboards rather than guns, stealing digital wallets of cryptocurrency instead of sacks of cash".

The rise of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin have presented hackers globally with a whole new range of increasingly lucrative targets.

In addition, said Jarkoff, their decentralised networks were a particular bonus for the North, offering a way to circumvent financial sanctions.

"This allows North Korea to easily launder money back into the country, outside the control of the global banking system," he said.

"Cryptocurrency is attractive because it is uncontrolled, borderless, and relatively anonymous."

'World's leading bank robbers': North Korea's hacker army

North Korea branded US diplomacy "spurious" on Sunday, dismissing the idea of talks with Washington a day after the Biden administration said it was open to diplomatic negotiations on denuclearization, state media reported.

Diplomacy was a "spurious signboard" for the United States to "cover up its hostile acts," the North Korean foreign ministry said in a statement run by the KCNA news agency.

It also warned President Joe Biden that he had made a "big blunder" with his "outdated" stance towards the country.

In a separate statement also run by KCNA, the foreign ministry accused Biden of insulting Kim Jong-Un, and added: "We have warned the US sufficiently enough to understand that it will get hurt if it provokes us."

Biden had said in his first address as president to Congress on Wednesday that he would use "diplomacy as well as stern deterrence" to contain North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

The White House said Friday that its goal remains "the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula."

US policy will see "a calibrated, practical approach that is open to and will explore diplomacy" with North Korea, Biden's press secretary Jen Pskai told reporters.

Psaki gave little indication of what kind of diplomatic initiative this could entail, but suggested that Biden had learned from the experience of previous administrations, who have struggled for decades to deal with the dictatorship in North Korea or, in recent years, its growing nuclear arsenal.

She said Washington would not "focus on achieving a grand bargain," apparently referring to the kind of dramatic over-arching deal that former president Donald Trump initially suggested was possible when he met with North Korea's leader.

Neither would the White House follow the more standoff approach called "strategic patience," espoused by Barack Obama, Psaki said.

In April, South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who is due to visit the White House on May 21, urged Biden to engage directly with Kim on denuclearization.

Moon told the newspaper he favoured "top-down diplomacy."

South Korea on Friday unveiled a prototype of its first domestically developed fighter jet. South Korean President Moon Jae-in hailed the KF-X to be the future backbone of the South Korean air force. He also said that this was a step towards South Korea's greater military independence. With unveiling of KF-21 fighter jet, South Korea has joined elite group of countries that have domestically developed supersonic fighter jet.

The next-generation aircraft has been developed by Korea Aerospace Industries Limited (KAI). It is designed to be a cheaper, less stealthy alternative to USA's F-35. South Korea heavily relies on US-built F-35 fighter jets.

The display at the KAI headquarters in the southern city of Sacheon was attended by Moon and representatives from Indonesia, which partnered with South Korea on the project.

"A new era of independent defence has begun," Moon said, according to a transcript of his comments released by his office.

The advantages of having a domestically produced fighter could not be overstated, he added.

"Whenever we need it, we can make it."

Moon has sought to boost the defence industry, both as a way to spur economic growth through exports, as well as to chart a more independent path in a country that has relied heavily on its major ally, the United States.

South Korea continues to buy large amounts of military hardware from the United States but under Moon the military announced its "acquisition policy will change to centre around domestic R&D rather than overseas purchases".

KAI plans to carry out ground testing this year, with first flights expected in 2022. The plan is to eventually replace most of South Korea’s older, U.S.-made F-4 and F-5 fighter jets, and produce more for export.

Moon said South Korea would have at least 40 of the new jets combat-ready by 2028, and 120 by 2032.

When deployed by the South Korean military, the aircraft will be known as the KF-21 Boramae.

South Korea and Indonesia agreed in 2014 to jointly develop the fighter in a project worth 7.5 trillion won ($6.3 billion), with Indonesia paying 20% of the cost. But in 2018, Jakarta sought to renegotiate to take pressure off its foreign reserves, later seeking to barter for its share of the cost.

South Korea is a world capital of plastic surgery even during non-pandemic times. The industry is estimated to be worth about 11 trillion won ($10.03 billion) in 2020, according to Gangnam Unni, the country's largest online cosmetic surgery platform. Cosmetic surgeons say patients are interested in all parts of the face: those that can be easily hidden under masks, such as nose and lips, or those that face coverings don't conceal, which some consider the criteria of beauty in the coronavirus era.

Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea promised to build at least 25,000 homes in the upcoming five years to counter the economic crisis. People in the country are beginning at 80-day campaign in a bid to achieve economic goals.

The country has witnessed a lot in 2020, from an array of typhoons that destroyed towns, to international sanctions, and the slowdown induced by COVID-19. North Korea still claims to have no coronavirus infections, a claim South Korea and the US have denied.

North Korea's Kim Jong Un initiates 'speed' campaign to ease economic woes; to build thousands of homes

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered 12,000 elite members of his ruling party based in Pyongyang to help with recovery efforts in two rural provinces lashed by a powerful typhoon, state media reported Sunday.

Typhoon Maysak brought days of heavy downpours to the country's east coast earlier this week even as the North was still reeling from earlier flooding and typhoon damage, and another storm is forecast to barrel through the peninsula by Tuesday.

Natural disasters tend to have a greater impact in the North due to its creaking infrastructure, and the country is vulnerable to flooding as many mountains and hills have long been deforested.

More than 1,000 homes were destroyed by Maysak and public buildings and farmland were inundated with floodwater across North and South Hamgyong provinces, the official KCNA news agency reported.

Kim inspected the damage on Saturday and held a policy meeting on disaster relief efforts, KCNA said.

He also dismissed the chairman of the South Hamgyong provincial party committee, the report added.

Photos carried by Sunday's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper showed Kim standing in front of destroyed homes and toppled trees as he discussed the situation with officials.

In a two-page handwritten open letter to members of the ruling Workers' Party in Pyongyang, Kim said around 12,000 members from the capital will be sent to the two provinces to help with the recovery ahead of a key holiday next month.

North Korea will mark the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the party on October 10.

"We cannot let a lot of people in South Hamgyong Province and North Hamgyong Province who newly suffered damage spend the holiday homeless," Kim was quoted as saying in the letter, which was carried by the Rodong Sinmun.

The damage was an "urgent situation which needs to be tackled without even a moment's delay", he added.

The report did not say how many were injured, missing or dead.

In 2016 at least 138 North Koreans died after torrential rain triggered major floods, the United Nations said at the time.

In the summer of 2012 more than 160 people were killed by a massive rainstorm.

North Korea's Kim Jong Un orders thousands to help typhoon recovery

The sister of North Korea's leader has warned of retaliatory measures against the South that could involve the military, in the latest escalation of tensions over defectors from the North who have been sending back propaganda.

This comes a day ahead of the 20th anniversary of the first inter-Korean summit in 2000, which pledged increased dialogue and cooperation between the two states.

Kim Yo Jong, who serves unofficially as one of Kim Jong Un's top aides, issued the warning in a statement carried by state news agency KCNA on Saturday.

"By exercising my power authorised by the Supreme Leader, our Party and the state, I gave an instruction to the ... department in charge of the affairs with (the) enemy to decisively carry out the next action," Kim said.

Her statement came days after South Korea took legal action against defectors who have been sending material such as rice and anti-North leaflets, usually by balloon over the heavily fortified border or in bottles by sea.

North Korea said it has been angered by the defectors and in the past week severed inter-Korean hotlines and threatened to close a liaison office between the two governments.
As part of the effort to improve ties with the North, South Korean President Moon Jae-in's administration has sought to discourage the leaflet and rice campaigns, and defectors have complained of pressure to avoid criticism of North Korea.

On Sunday, South Korea’s National Security Council meeting was held with security and diplomatic chiefs in attendance, "to examine the current situation of the (Korean) peninsula," the presidential Blue House said, without elaborating.

South Korea's Unification Ministry and Defence Ministry each released statements asking the North to honour inter-Korean agreements reached in the past.

"The South and the North should try to honour all inter-Korean agreements reached," the Unification Ministry said in a statement.

The Defence Ministry said the military is ready to respond to "all situations," and added it is closely monitoring moves by the North Korean military.

In 2018, the leaders of the two countries signed a declaration agreeing to work for the "complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula" and cease "hostile acts."

Analysts say North Korea appears to be using the leaflet issue to increase pressure on South Korea amid stalled denuclearisation talks.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has made an unusually small number of public appearances in the past two months, once again going three weeks without state media reporting his attendance at a public event, according to analysts.

Kim’s low profile comes as North Korea imposes anti-coronavirus measures, although the country says it has no confirmed cases, and follows intense speculation about his health last month after he missed a key anniversary.

Kim has appeared publicly four times in April and so far in May, compared to 27 times in the same period last year.

Since coming to power in 2011, the previous fewest public appearances Kim has made during those months was 21 in 2017, according to a tally by Chad O’Carroll, CEO of Korea Risk Group, a Seoul-based organisation that tracks North Korea.

“This is not business as normal,” he said in a post on Twitter this week.

As a leader with near-absolute power over North Korea’s 25.5 million people, and access to a growing arsenal of nuclear weapons, Kim’s health and whereabouts are often scrutinized by the international community for any signs of instability.

Information in North Korea is tightly controlled, however, and independently confirmed details on Kim are almost non-existent.

South Korean officials have said they believe Kim’s limited public appearances may be precautions in the face of coronavirus concerns. North Korea has cancelled, postponed, or toned down many major public gatherings because the new coronavirus.

When asked about Kim’s absences, South Korea’s Unification Ministry said on Friday it is monitoring the situation, but noted Kim is often out of the public eye.

Citing an unnamed South Korean government official, JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported Kim may be carrying out his duties from a favoured villa in Wonsan, on the coast.

But the North Korean leader may also simply be focused on some of the domestic economic and political goals he outlined before the coronavirus crisis struck, said Rachel Minyoung Lee, a former North Korea open source intelligence analyst in the U.S. government.

“COVID does remain a major concern for the country, but state media coverage of COVID has declined over the past month or so, so I don’t seen regime’s increased concern,” she said.

Friday marks three weeks since state media last showed images of Kim attending a public event.

North Korean state media reported Kim attended the opening ceremony of a fertilizer plant on May 1. That appearance marked a reemergence for Kim, whose unprecedented absence from a major holiday on April 15 sparked weeks of international speculation over his health and whereabouts.

Since then, state media has carried a steady stream of stories on Kim sending or receiving letters and diplomatic correspondence, but have not shown him attending public events.

Kim’s longest public absence was for 40 days in 2014. South Korea’s spy agency later said Kim had undergone a medical procedure on his ankle during that time.
