An analysis by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has revealed that nearly 1700 journalists were killed across the globe in the past 20 years. This comes to an average of more than 80 per year.

The Paris-based media rights campaigners said that the two decades between the years 2003 and 2022 were "especially deadly decades for those in the service of the right to inform"&nbsp;

"Behind the figures, there are the faces, personalities, talent and commitment of those who have paid with their lives for their information gathering, their search for the truth and their passion for journalism," RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloire said.&nbsp;

RSF said that Iraq and Syria were the most dangerous countries to work as a journalist. According to the analysis, these two countries have accounted for "a combined total of 578 journalists killed in the past 20 years, or more than a third of the worldwide total"

Iraq and Syria were followed by Mexico (125 killed), the Philippines (107), Pakistan (93), Afghanistan (81) and Somalia (78).

RSF said that 2012 and 2013 were the "darkest years". There were 144 killings in 2012 and 142 the year after. In the report, they have been attributed "in large measure" to the war in Syria.

This peak was "followed by a gradual fall and then historically low figures from 2019 onwards".&nbsp;

Putin's influence

But deaths increased again in 2022, in part because of the war in Ukraine. So far this year, 58 journalists have been killed doing their jobs, up from 51 in 2021. &nbsp;

Eight journalists have been killed in Ukraine since Russia invaded in February. This compares to a total of 12 media deaths there over the preceding 19 years.&nbsp;

Ukraine is currently the most dangerous country in Europe for the media, after Russia itself, where 25 journalists have been killed over the past 20 years. &nbsp;

"Since (President) Vladimir Putin took over, Russia has seen systematic attacks on press freedom -– including deadly ones –- as RSF has repeatedly reported. &nbsp;

She said that normally there’s no blood in that space and what can happen is if there’s enough blood that gets in there, the heart essentially can’t beat because it sort of compresses the heart, and you can have a cardiac arrest.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

The station has been reporting <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/now-uk-civil-servants-to-join-strike-over-cost-of-living-crisis-union-seeks-10-pay-hike-533295">the anti-regime demonstrations</a> in Iran since Mahsa Amini, who was killed in mid-September for allegedly breaking the severe dress code for women, was accused of doing so.

The wheel of the truck ran over her head as she fell on the road, he said. PTI leader Mussarat Jamshed Cheema confirmed that&nbsp;Naeem&nbsp;was run over by Khan's vehicle. Local police officials did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.

The report said that the car drove through roadblock set up by the police without stopping.

A Kenyan police watchdog has said it is investigating the incident, which happened at 10 pm&nbsp;(1900 GMT) on Sunday on the outskirts of the capital.

The Star newspaper quoted a senior police officer who said that the shooting was being treated as a case of mistaken identity.

Sharif worked for many years as a prime time television news show host for ARY News in Pakistan and had recently fled the country citing threats to his life. It was not immediately clear when he had arrived in Kenya.

The police report said a relative of Sharif had been driving the car. It said police had formed a roadblock using small stones, but the car drove through without stopping, even after officers opened fire. Nine bullets hit the car, and one hit Sharif in the head.

Kenya's Independent Police Oversight Authority, a civilian watchdog, has started an investigation into Sharif's killing, its chairwoman Ann Makori told journalists in a news conference on Monday.

"There's an alleged police killing of a Pakistani national at Tinga market, Kajiado county, last evening. Our rapid response team has already been dispatched," she said.

Pakistan's High Commissioner to Kenya Saqlain Syedah said a post-mortem had been performed and her government was trying to send Sharif's body back to his family in Pakistan.

"I have requested the government of Kenya to do an intensive investigation and to find out the reason behind it," she said.

Marina Ovsyannikova, a former Russian state TV journalist who protested against President Vladimir Putin’s Ukraine invasion during a live broadcast, has fled the country, her lawyers reportedly said.

The 44-year-old Ukrainian-born woman came under heavy scrutiny by Russian officials after she decried the conflict by flashing a poster that read “no war” during the live broadcast of Channel One in March.

Subsequently, she was fined 30,000 roubles (£460) for violating the protest laws and was sacked.

"Ovsyannikova and her daughter left Russia a few hours after departing from the address where she was under house arrest. They are in Europe now," Ovsyannikova's lawyer Dmitry Zakhvatov told AFP.

"They are fine. They are waiting until they can talk about it publicly, but for now, it is not safe," he added.

Since August, she was under house arrest after she again protested against the war in Ukraine in mid-July near Kremlin. She was the lone participant and had carried a poster that read "Putin is a murderer. His soldiers are fascists".

After that, she was detained and was charged with a potential 10 years in prison for distributing information about the Russian armed forces deemed false by the government.

According to reports, Putin had added the journalist on a wanted list after she evaded house arrest with her daughter.

Ovsyannikova later clarified on social media saying that she was innocent and hence decided not to comply with the order.

“I consider myself completely innocent, and since our state refuses to comply with its own laws, I&nbsp;refuse to comply&nbsp;with the measure of restraint imposed on me as of 30 September 2022 and release myself from it,” she said on her social media channels on October 5.

Journalists and human rights defenders in the Philippines took to the streets after a prominent journalist, who is a critic of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, was shot dead in his car during an ambush near his home.

Journalist Percival Mabasa, who was killed on Monday night, was the second scribe to be killed following the ascension of President Marcos, the son of the dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos, in late June, according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines.

Mabasa was killed outside his residential compound in the Las Pinas area of suburban Manila by two bike-borne men, Brigadier General Roderick Augustus Alba, a spokesman for Philippine National Police, said on Tuesday, reports Reuters.

In a statement, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines condemned Mabasa’s killing saying that “journalism remains a dangerous profession” in the country.

“That the incident took place in Metro Manila indicates how brazen the perpetrators were, and how authorities have failed to protect journalists as well as ordinary citizens from harm,” it added.

Last month, Renato “Rey” Blanco, a radio broadcaster, was stabbed to death in the central Philippines. A suspect later surrendered to the police, but no charges have been filed.

Mabasa’s family has demanded that “his cowardly assassins be brought to justice”.

Meanwhile, local police chief Jaime Santos in a statement said that he was probably targeted because of his work.

“We are not discounting the possibility that the shooting could be related to the victim’s work in media,” he was quoted as saying.

According to the journalist association, the deceased journalist had been critical of “red-tagging” – accusing someone of being a communist sympathiser – as well as online gambling operations and misinformation around martial law.

He was also an outspoken critic of former President Rodrigo Duterte and his successor Ferdinand, apart from the policies of the government and the officials.

Outrage over killing of Philippines journalist who was critical of president

Bernard Shaw, a former CNN anchor, passed away on Wednesday from pneumonia unrelated to Covid-19 at a hospital in Washington, DC, his family reported on Thursday. Shaw, then 82,&nbsp;

Shaw served as CNN's initial chief anchor and was a part of the network on June 1, 1980, when it debuted. On February 28, 2001, he left CNN after working there for more than 20 years.&nbsp;

Shaw covered some of the most important news of the day during his illustrious career, such as the student uprising in Tiananmen Square in May 1989, the First Gulf War live from Baghdad in 1991, and the 2000 presidential election.

"CNN's beloved anchor and colleague, Bernard Shaw, passed away yesterday at the age of 82. Bernie was a CNN original and was our Washington Anchor when we launched on June 1st, 1980," Chris Licht, CNN Chairman and CEO, said in a statement Thursday.

"He was our lead anchor for the next twenty years from anchoring coverage of presidential elections to his iconic coverage of the First Gulf War live from Baghdad in 1991. Even after he left CNN, Bernie remained a close member of our CNN family providing our viewers with context about historic events as recently as last year. The condolences of all of us at CNN go out to his wife Linda and his children."

According to his family, Shaw's funeral services will be private for family and invited visitors only, with a public memorial ceremony scheduled for a later date.&nbsp;

Shaw was the son of Edgar and Camilla Shaw and was born in Chicago on May 22, 1940.&nbsp;

He served in the Marine Corps for four years, and while there, he asked TV news great Walter Cronkite for advice on how to become a journalist while he was stationed in Hawaii.

In front of her, three "blood-soaked" dolls were arranged on the ground. She was put in a cage Thursday at the Basmanny district court in Moscow, where she was guarded by numerous police officers. "May the dead children haunt you in your dreams," read the sign she was holding.

On the messaging service Telegram, her attorney Dmitry Zakhvatov claimed that "even" the most vicious serial killer from the Soviet Union, Andrei Chikatilo, wasn't being guarded with such vigilance. The court determined that Ovsyankova should be under house arrest until October 9 during a hearing behind closed doors. Russia has essentially banned criticism of Putin's decision to send soldiers to Ukraine on February 24.

Ovsyannikova, who spent 19 years working for Russian official television, has been offered refuge or other forms of diplomatic protection by French President Emmanuel Macron. Ilya Yashin and Vladimir Kara-Murza, two famous Putin critics, were imprisoned pending trial earlier this year for opposing Moscow's operation in Ukraine. Russian court orders house arrest for former state TV journalist who raised 'No War' poster

Ivana Hrynkiw, a reporter and managing producer with AL.com, who has attended seven executions in her career, was told by a prison official that her dress did not meet the dress regulations.

“I have worn this skirt to prior executions without incident, to work, professional events and more and I believe it is more than appropriate. At 5′10″ with my heels on, I am a tall and long-legged person,” she said on Twitter. 
 
However, she tried to salvage the situation by pulling the skirt down to the hips to increase its length. But the prison official wasn’t up for it. Hrynkiw then borrowed a pair of fisherman’s waders from a local television photographer, The Guardian reported.

“I put on the man’s pants and attached the suspenders underneath my shirt to stay up,” she wrote in her&nbsp;Twitter post.

The matter was still far from resolved as now Hrynkiw’s open-toed shoes became a problem. She changed into a pair of tennis sneakers she had in her car.

“This was an uncomfortable situation, and I felt embarrassed to have my body and my clothes questioned in front of a room of people I mostly had never met,” Hrynkiw’s post further said.

Another journalist, an Associated Press reporter, Kim Chandler, was also subjected to a full-body inspection. She was made to stand and had the length of her clothing checked. However, her dress was cleared for the execution.

Reacting to the entire episode, Kelly Ann Scott, editor in chief and vice president of content for Alabama Media Group, in a statement on AL.com said, “This was sexist and an egregious breach of professional conduct. And it should not happen to any other reporter again.”

On Friday, a formal complaint was filed by AL.com with the Alabama Department of Corrections, Gov. Kay Ivey and Attorney General Steve Marshall.

The Associated Press has also sent a letter to Ivey asking for an investigation. It has also asked to “ensure such behavior is not tolerated and does not occur again.”

A court in Indian capital New Delhi on Friday granted bail to Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair. He was arrested in a case related to his alleged objectionable tweet in 2018 on a Hindu deity. While granting bail the court observed that "the voice of dissent is necessary for a healthy democracy".

The court noted that till Friday (July 15), the police have failed to establish the identity of a said Twitter user who felt offended by the tweet of the accused and based on whose complaint the present case was filed

In spite of the bail however, Zubair will remain in jail as he has been remanded to judicial custody in some FIRs. These FIRs are registered against him by UP Police for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

Zubair will be sent to the concerned jail in Uttar Pradesh after his release, according to a Tihar jail official in Delhi. The journalist is currently lodged in Tihar jail since July 2.

While granting bail, Additional Sessions Judge Devender Kumar Jangala said Indian democracy and the political parties are open for their criticism and that merely criticism of any political parties is no ground to invoke section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 295A (outraging religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code(IPC).

"Undoubtedly free speech is the proper foundation of a democratic society."

Further, the court said that Hindu religion, one of the oldest in the world was most tolerant.

Six separate FIRs have been lodged against Zubair in Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar and Hathras districts in UP.

The court has directed Zubair to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and one surety of like amount. He has been directed not to leave the country without prior permission from the court. The journalist was also ordered to ensure that his tweet or retweet, or any material on social media content is not even touching boundaries of the offence punishable under Section 153A and 295A of IPC.

The court said that there was no need for any custodial interrogation and the alleged act would come into the category of offence only when it is done with a guilty intention.

Philippines news site Rappler ordered to shut down, but owner Ressa says business ‘as usual’

After converting to Judaism and undertaking three intensive years of Jewish study, 40-year-old former journalist Eliora Peretz recently became one of the few women in Israel to receive an Orthodox rabbinical ordination. She was born in France to a Christian family and was not an obvious candidate to become a trailblazing Orthodox rabbi in Israel, as reported by AFP.

Female rabbis have grown increasingly common in more liberal Jewish denominations, but among the Orthodox opportunities for high-level religious study and positions of religious authority are reserved for men. Israel's Orthodox-controlled chief rabbinate has also refused to recognise Peretz's credentials, meaning she cannot officiate at a recognised synagogue.

Peretz told AFP that she does not see herself as an activist campaigning for rabbinical gender equality, but more of a "pioneer", and one comfortable highlighting injustices in Israel's rabbinical establishment. "There is nothing written in our religious texts that prevents a woman from marrying a couple, but it's forbidden in Israel," Peretz, a married mother of two, said in an interview at a synagogue in Jerusalem.&nbsp;

While current rules prevent her from formally leading a congregation, she said she could "be a spiritual guide, offer lessons, and answer questions from the faithful... just like any male rabbi". Peretz, a dual French-Swiss national, received her ordination from Daniel Sperber, winner of the prestigious Israel Prize for his achievements in Talmudic study and a revered rabbi who has challenged the Orthodox establishment.&nbsp;

Sperber in particularly attracted headlines in 2020 for being a rare member of the Orthodox community to speak out against "gay conversion therapy", a practice widely considered a human rights violation.&nbsp;

In 2019, a group of Orthodox women went to Israel's supreme court seeking to overturn a ban that prevents them from taking the rabbinical exam reserved for men. There has not yet been a final ruling in the case.&nbsp;

Currently, only one female Israeli citizen leads an Orthodox congregation. Shira Mirvis was named the "spiritual leader" of a community in the Efrat settlement in the occupied West Bank, but she too has not been recognised by Israel's rabbinate and also does not serve officially as a rabbi.&nbsp;

She was born in France to a Christian family and was not an obvious candidate to become a trailblazing Orthodox rabbi in Israel, as reported by AFP. Female rabbis have grown increasingly common in more liberal Jewish denominations, but among the Orthodox opportunities for high-level religious study and positions of religious authority are reserved for men. Israel's Orthodox-controlled chief rabbinate has also refused to recognise Peretz's credentials, meaning she cannot officiate at a recognised synagogue. Peretz told AFP that she does not see herself as an activist campaigning for rabbinical gender equality, but more of a "pioneer", and one comfortable highlighting injustices in Israel's rabbinical establishment. "There is nothing written in our religious texts that prevents a woman from marrying a couple, but it's forbidden in Israel," Peretz, a married mother of two, said in an interview at a synagogue in Jerusalem. While current rules prevent her from formally leading a congregation, she said she could "be a spiritual guide, offer lessons, and answer questions from the faithful... just like any male rabbi". Peretz, a dual French-Swiss national, received her ordination from Daniel Sperber, winner of the prestigious Israel Prize for his achievements in Talmudic study and a revered rabbi who has challenged the Orthodox establishment. Sperber in particularly attracted headlines in 2020 for being a rare member of the Orthodox community to speak out against "gay conversion therapy", a practice widely considered a human rights violation. You might find one in your local community pool In 2019, a group of Orthodox women went to Israel's supreme court seeking to overturn a ban that prevents them from taking the rabbinical exam reserved for men. There has not yet been a final ruling in the case. Currently, only one female Israeli citizen leads an Orthodox congregation. Shira Mirvis was named the "spiritual leader" of a community in the Efrat settlement in the occupied West Bank, but she too has not been recognised by Israel's rabbinate and also does not serve officially as a rabbi.
