"The MJ wardrobe is from the personal collection of Jordan’s longtime personal security guard and close friend, John Michael Wozniak, who starred in 'The Last Dance' documentary," according to a spokesman for the auction.

The Lelands describes it as: "Unusual item shows definite use as this pair of underwear/compression shorts was worn by Michael Jordan with some loose threads evident at the seams. Originating from a family member of MJ's "Last Dance" security guard John Michael Wozniak, it even has a dry cleaning tag inside with the last name "Wozniak" as well as a tag that says Michael Jordan, with the iconic last name on the waistband. About as close to greatness as one can get, this is just one of the many items in this auction that were given to Wozniak from MJ himself including suits, ties, belts, and jackets."

The bidding for Jordan's items will begins at $500. The auction also included the “Holy Grail” of Tom Brady football cards and "the most iconic and desirable [Stephen] Curry card in the hobby."

Friends and family initially mocked one Jordanian family's new venture making&nbsp;soap&nbsp;from&nbsp;donkey&nbsp;milk. But now, a year on, the company is cleaning&nbsp;up&nbsp;as customers bray for more.

Atan&nbsp;Donkey&nbsp;Milk&nbsp;Soaps produces 100 per cent natural soaps from its farm in Madaba,&nbsp;35 kilometres (21 miles) southwest of Amman, where it keeps 12 donkeys, and a small manufacturing workshop in the Jordanian capital.

Although other regions around the Mediterranean produce&nbsp;soap&nbsp;from&nbsp;donkey&nbsp;milk, this is the first for&nbsp;Jordan.

"At the beginning, many laughed at the idea," said Emad Attiyat, 32, co-founder of the project which takes its name from the Arabic for a jenny or female&nbsp;donkey, "atan".

Sceptics scoffed they "would use nothing on (their) skin related to donkeys," added Attiyat who has a degree in Management Information Systems.

But "after trying the&nbsp;soap, all that changed, and now we produce more than 4,500 bars of&nbsp;soap&nbsp;per month to meet the demand," he said, standing next to the barn where the animals are housed.

<h2>'Reducing ageing'&nbsp;</h2>

Donkey's&nbsp;milk&nbsp;is said to be rich in minerals and proteins that can help moisturise the skin. It also has high levels of antioxidants, which protect the skin from sunlight and the effects of ageing, according to beauticians.

One litre of&nbsp;milk&nbsp;produces around 30 bars of&nbsp;soap, but milking each female is a painstaking task done with the help of a hand-held electronic pump.

Each&nbsp;donkey&nbsp;has to be milked three times a day in order to get about a litre of fluid, and leaving about another litre for its foal. The&nbsp;milk&nbsp;is frozen and then&nbsp;transferred to the company's workshop in Amman to be turned into&nbsp;soap.

Research has shown&nbsp;donkey&nbsp;milk&nbsp;can "help regenerate skin cells, reduce signs of ageing and help cure some skin diseases such as eczema," said Attiyat's mother Salma Al-Zubi.

She was the one who came&nbsp;up&nbsp;with the idea of trying the venture.&nbsp;

An environmental activist and retired teacher, she said&nbsp;donkey's&nbsp;milk&nbsp;soap&nbsp;contributes to balancing the skin's moisture levels, removing wrinkles as well as the effects of spots and acne.

Now in her 60s, she helps mix ingredients in their company's Amman workshop in a large steel bowl, wearing a white face mask and blue gloves.

Olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil as well as shea butter are added to the&nbsp;donkey&nbsp;milk&nbsp;to produce the&nbsp;soap&nbsp;which is then sold via their Facebook page.

A small, 85-gram bar of&nbsp;soap&nbsp;costs eight Jordanian dinars ($11), while a large 125-gram bar of&nbsp;soap&nbsp;is sold for ten dinars ($14).

By comparison, a litre of&nbsp;donkey's&nbsp;milk&nbsp;in Europe can reach as high as 60 euros, and is used in making some expensive cheeses.

<h2>Providing jobs</h2>

Attiyat is now hoping to expand production to face and hand creams and lotions.

Donkey's&nbsp;milk&nbsp;is "rich in proteins and minerals including magnesium, copper, sodium, manganese, zinc, calcium and iron, all of which are very important for the skin," said dietician Susanna Haddad, who works at a beauty centre in Amman.

It contains "higher percentages of whey, which has antimicrobial properties" and can also prevent the growth of viruses and bacteria.

As she poured the mixture into special silicon moulds to shape the bars over the next month, Zubi said the venture had provided jobs to several family members "including my son Emad, who has suffered from unemployment for many years".

Jordan's already weak economy has been badly hit by the year-long restrictions and closures imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The poverty rate, according to official figures, rose to about 15.7 per cent by late 2020, while estimates say it could soar to more than 24 per cent this year.

Unemployment also increased in the first quarter of 2021 to reach 25 per cent, or 50 per cent among the youth in a country whose public debt exceeded $48 billion, or more than 108 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP).

Loyal customer, lawyer Esraa al-Turk, 48, said she had been attracted to the&nbsp;donkey&nbsp;milk&nbsp;soap&nbsp;because it is a natural product.

In a shocking news update from California, a film producer was arrested for running a prostitution racket using his production company as a front. In an indictment, Dillon Jordan was arrested in San Bernardino County, California.&nbsp;

According to the indictment, the Hollywood film producer&nbsp;from 2010 through May 2017, kept a roster of women who lived across the U.S. and performed sexual acts for Jordan’s clients in exchange for money.&nbsp; It said he coordinated with a United Kingdom-based madam, sharing and referring customers and prostitutes. The madam was not identified by name in court papers.

The film producer arranged transportation for women to engage in prostitution or directed clients to arrange interstate transportation. He disguised payments for prostitution made by check to the women by describing them as fees for modeling, appearance, consulting, massage therapy and house parties, according to the indictment.

In a press release, US Attorney Audrey Strauss said,&nbsp;“For years, Dillon Jordan operated an extensive and far-reaching prostitution business through two front companies — a purported party and event planning company and an actual movie production company. Now the party is over and the film is a wrap.”

He has been granted bail as of now but ordered not to communicate with any victims or anyone likely to be a witness in the case. He was also ordered to surrender his firearms to law enforcement and not to use any drugs or marijuana.&nbsp;

Jordan King, Israel PM holds talk in secret

A Jordanian court on Monday sentenced two former officials to 15 years in jail over a palace coup attempt that sparked a crisis in a kingdom seen as a regional oasis of stability.

Former royal court chief Bassem Awadallah and an ex-envoy to Saudi Arabia, Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, had been convicted of conspiring to topple King Abdullah II in favour of his half-brother Prince Hamzah.

The former crown prince himself was not on trial.

But the 13-page charge sheet said Hamzah, 41, "was determined to fulfil his personal ambition to rule, in violation of the Hashemite constitution and customs".

Awadallah and Bin Zaid, who both have close ties to neighbouring Saudi Arabia, were found guilty of "incitement against the ruling system" and "acts that could threaten society and create sedition", said the sentence read out in court.

Awadallah, who holds Saudi nationality, and his co-defendant had been on trial since June 21 and had faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

Images released by authorities showed the two men, in light blue prison uniforms, being escorted into the court on Monday by security personnel in black uniforms.

Journalists at a makeshift media centre outside the State Security Court, a military tribunal that also includes civilian judges, were later shown short videos of the ruling being issued.

The men's lawyers said they would appeal.

Regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia has fervently denied any involvement in the alleged plot.

The unprecedented palace crisis erupted in April. Eighteen suspects were arrested after authorities announced they had foiled a bid to destabilise the pro-Western kingdom, but 16 were later released.

A former crown prince who was sidelined as heir to the throne by the king in 2004, Hamzah accused Jordan's rulers of corruption and ineptitude in a video message posted by the BBC on April 3.

He said the same day that he had been put under house arrest.

Authorities later said he would not stand trial, as his case had been resolved within the royal family, with Hamzah pledging allegiance to Abdullah.

Closed-Door Trial

The king appointed Hamzah as crown prince in 1999, at the request of his late father, but removed him from the post in 2004, later naming his son, Prince Hussein, as next in line to the throne.

The court had rejected a defence request to summon three princes along with Prime Minister Bisher al-Khasawneh and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi as witnesses, calling it "unproductive".

The trial was held behind closed doors in the capital Amman.

At the start, Awadallah's lawyer Mohammed Afif had said the two defendants "insist that Prince Hamzah testify in this case".

"The final decision is up to the court, but if it refuses to summon him, it must justify it," he told AFP on June 22.

Bin Zaid's lawyer said ahead of the verdict that the defence team had asked the court to "find both our clients innocent of the charges against them".

US-educated Awadallah was long considered a contentious and divisive figure in Jordan, having served as finance and planning minister before becoming royal court chief in 2007.

He played a key role pushing for economic reforms before he resigned in 2008 amid criticism over alleged interference in sensitive political and economic issues.

He rose to become an influential figure familiar with the inner workings of the Saudi leadership and often appeared alongside Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince and de facto ruler Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

When the trial opened, a video was widely shared on social media showing Awadallah arriving at the court wearing a plain blue prison uniform and a mask.

To the delight of his many detractors in Jordan, he was seen with his hands cuffed behind his back, escorted by an anti-terror officer.

Jordan's former royal court chief, ex-official get 15-year jail term over ‘coup plot’

Israel and Jordan struck a deal on Thursday according to which the Jewish state will sell an unprecedented amount of water to Jordan. This will also significantly boost Jordanian exports to Palestinians in West Bank.

Water resource cooperation has been a core issue between Israel and Jordan since a 1994 peace deal, but relations between the neighbours have frayed in recent years.

The meeting between the two countries was held just inside the Jordanian border. Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and his Jordanian counterpart approved Israel's sale of &nbsp;50 million cubic metres of water to its neighbour.&nbsp;

Statements from both governments confirmed the sale, and said the final details of the transaction would be concluded in the coming days.

Lapid described Jordan as an "important partner" for Israel, and said he was committed to strengthening ties.

Gidon Bromberg, Israeli Director for EcoPeace Middle East -- a leading organisation on regional water cooperation which operates in Israel, the West Bank and Jordan -- described the water sale as "the largest quantity ever sold between the two countries."

It "is a true 'water shed' event," he said.

"It represents an understanding of mutual interests and how countries in the region need to cooperate, if we are to survive the tremendous challenges to water and national security that the climate crisis presents."

Jordan is one of the world's most water-deficient countries and experts say the country, home to 10 million people, has been grappling with one of its most severe droughts in its history.

Israel, which also faces water pressures, is a world leader in desalination.

"It represents an understanding of mutual interests and how countries in the region need to cooperate, if we are to survive the tremendous challenges to water and national security that the climate crisis presents." Jordan is one of the world's most water-deficient countries and experts say the country, home to 10 million people, has been grappling with one of its most severe droughts in its history. Israel, which also faces water pressures, is a world leader in desalination. (With inputs from agencies)

France President Emmanuel Macron, his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordan's King Abdullah II on Tuesday, held talks to seek ceasefire in Israel-Palestine conflict.

Sisi is currently in Paris for summits on Africa. King Abdullah joined by video conference, the Elysee Palace said.&nbsp;

French presidency said that trilateral summit meeting aimed "above all to work for a rapid ceasefire and prevent the conflict from extending"

Statement from Sisi's office added after the meeting that the talks sought "to develop a common approach of the three countries to put an end to the violence" and contain "the dangerous escalation" in the Palestinian territories.

Egypt, which borders Gaza and is one of the few Arab countries with a long history of diplomatic relations with Israel, is seeking to fulfil its traditional role of mediator in the current conflict.

According to spokesman Bassam Radi, Sisi emphasised that "Egypt will continue its efforts to stop the escalation on both sides, through its contacts with all the international parties as well as with the Israeli and Palestinian sides".

Macron had on Monday underlined the importance of Egyptian mediation after talks in Paris with Sisi, a key ally and defence client of France despite activists' concerns over Cairo's rights record.

He said that the trilateral talks would be aimed at "how to make a concrete proposal along these lines".

According to the Jordanian Royal Court, Abdullah affirmed in the video call "the need to protect the Palestinians, stop all illegal Israeli attacks and actions in Jerusalem, and end the aggression on Gaza".

He also stressed that "the repeated Israeli violations and provocations that led to the escalation and exacerbated the situation must end".

Jordan asked Israel on Sunday to stop what it called 'barbaric' attacks on worshippers in Jerusalem's al-Aqsa. Jordan has custodianship of Muslims and Christian sites in Jerusalem. It said it would step up international pressure on Israel.

East Jerusalem tensions have spilled over into clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians around al Aqsa, Islam's third-holiest mosque, at the height of the Ramadan fasting month.

"What the Israeli police and special forces are doing, from violations against the mosque to attacks on worshippers, is barbaric (behaviour) that is rejected and condemned," said Jordanian government said in a statement.

Frictions have mounted in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank, with nightly clashes in East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah - a neighbourhood where numerous Palestinian families face eviction.

King Abdullah, whose Hashemite family claims descent from Islam's Prophet Mohammad and draws legitimacy from its custodianship role, said Israeli actions in the holy city were an escalation and called on it to end its "dangerous provocations".

The monarch accused Israel of trying to change the demographic status of the holy city which contains sites sacred to Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said the kingdom, which lost East Jerusalem and the West Bank in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, would do its utmost to protect rights of Palestinians against ownership claims by Jewish settlers.

"Israel as the occupying force carries responsibility for protecting rights of Palestinians in their homes," Safadi said in comments on state media.

Jordan's King Abdullah, Prince Hamza make first joint appearance since rift

Jordan's King Abdullah II broke his silence on Wednesday to tell his nation that the worst political crisis in decades sparked by an alleged plot involving his half-brother Prince Hamzah was over.

The monarch appeared to be doubling down on the allegations against Hamzah, a former crown prince, while at the same time trying to reassure Jordanians that the nation was returning to business as usual.

But even if the current crisis is eventually defused, major challenges loom for the Western-allied monarchy as it confronts growing internal dissent.

"I speak to you today, my family and my tribe... to assure you that the sedition has been nipped in the bud, and that our proud Jordan is safe and stable," Abdullah said in an address read out in his name on state television, a day after an official news blackout on the affair.

"The challenge over the past few days was not the most difficult or dangerous to the stability of our nation, but to me, it was the most painful," he said, according to an official English translation released after the broadcast.

"Sedition came from within and without our one house," he added.

Hamzah was appointed crown prince in 1999 in line with his father's wishes, but Abdullah stripped him of the title in 2004 and named his eldest son in Hamzah's place.

After claiming he was put under house arrest Saturday, Hamzah had made extensive use of traditional and social media to lash out against his situation.

He accused Jordan's rulers of corruption and ineptitude in a video message published by the BBC on Saturday.

But after a statement voicing his loyalty to the king on Monday, Abdullah said Wednesday that Hamzah had offered his support for the monarchy.

"Hamzah today is with his family, at his palace, in my care," Abdullah said in his address.

"Prince Hamzah pledged before the family to follow in the steps of the ancestors, remain loyal to their mission, and to put Jordan's interest, constitution, and laws above all considerations."

A probe into the events continues, the king said.

"As for the other aspects, they are under investigation, in accordance with the law... in a manner that guarantees justice and transparency," he added.

Even before the palace drama, Jordan was grappling with an economic crisis exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, with one in four people out of work. Longstanding complaints about corruption and misrule have fueled scattered protests in recent months.

At the same time, the region's strategic landscape is shifting as powerful Gulf states pursue closer ties with Israel, potentially undermining Jordan's role in the Middle East peace process.

US President Joe Biden called Abdullah Wednesday to express his "strong support" for the monarch, and "underscore the importance of King Abdullah II's leadership to the United States and the region," the White House said in a statement.

Major Gulf powers, Russia, Egypt, and the Arab League have all pledged support for Abdullah, and on Wednesday, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen visited Amman.

After meeting with Abdullah, she said the EU was "ready to continue its long-term partnership and contribute to prosperity and stability".

The king's address followed orders issued Tuesday by Amman prosecutor Hassan al-Abdallat that banned the publication of any information about the alleged plot in order to keep the security services' investigation secret.

Jordan's media was told to wait for official statements before publishing anything about those arrested.

Wednesday morning's newspapers were dominated by the visit the day before of Saudi Foreign Minister Faysal Bin Farhan with a message from King Salman, and by developments in the coronavirus outbreak ravaging the country.

Mustafa al-Riyalat, editor-in-chief of pro-government newspaper Addustour, said Jordanians "all feel reassured, because it's as if nothing happened."

In the streets, Jordanians voiced relief.

"When the crisis erupted on Saturday, there was no one in the streets. People were afraid," said Shady, 41, who owns a clothing store in the capital Amman.&nbsp;

"But thank God, it was resolved within the royal palace."

But Ahmed Awad, of the Phenix Center for Economics and Informatics Studies, warned that the crisis was not yet over.

Gravitas: Why Jordan is critical to West Asia's security

Jordan&nbsp;banned all news outlets and social media users on Tuesday from publishing any content related to King Abdullah's half-brother Prince Hamzah after the latter was accused of plotting to destabilise the country.

Prince Hamzah had on Saturday harshly criticised&nbsp;Jordan's leaders from what he said was house arrest,&nbsp;but in a dramatic about-turn on Monday, pledged his loyalty to the royal family.

The palace released a signed statement in which the 41-year-old prince had changed his tone and pledged to "always be ready to help and support His Majesty the King and his Crown Prince".

The monarchy ruling&nbsp;Jordan&nbsp;-- a country long regarded as a pro-Western anchor of stability in a turbulent region-- declared it was settling the matter "within the framework of the Hashemite family".

Amman's prosecutor general on Tuesday banned the publication of any information about the investigation into what the government has called a "wicked" plot against&nbsp;Jordan&nbsp;involving unnamed foreign entities.

The government has accused Hamzah, a former crown prince who was sidelined as heir to the throne in 2004, of involvement in a conspiracy to "destabilise the kingdom's security" and also arrested at least 16 people.

"In order to keep the security services' investigation into Prince Hamzah and the others secret, (it is decided) to ban the publication of anything related to this inquiry at this stage," prosecutor Hassan al-Abdallat said in a statement.

"The ban on publication involves all audiovisual media and social networks, as well as the publication of all images or video clips relating to this subject on pain of legal action."

The government says he liaised with people linked to foreign parties in a plot to destabilise&nbsp;Jordan&nbsp;and that he had been under investigation for some time.

Prince Hamza said in a voice recording released by&nbsp;Jordan's opposition on Monday that he would not comply after being barred from any activity and told to keep quiet.

While not considered a direct threat to the king, Hamza in recent weeks visited tribal gatherings where the king and his government have been criticised more openly.

Saudi Arabia was among the countries to issue statements of support to King Abdullah, and on Monday Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan travelled to Amman to meet his&nbsp;Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, the&nbsp;Jordanian foreign ministry said.

"King Salman reaffirmed the kingdom's support to all measures to protect&nbsp;Jordan&nbsp;and its interests," Saudi state TV reported.

King Abdullah had expressed "appreciation for the kingdom's continuous support to&nbsp;Jordan," it said.

Jordan banned all news outlets and social media users on Tuesday from publishing any content related to King Abdullah's half-brother Prince Hamzah after the latter was accused of plotting to destabilise the country. Prince Hamzah had on Saturday harshly criticised Jordan's leaders from what he said was house arrest, but in a dramatic about-turn on Monday, pledged his loyalty to the royal family. The palace released a signed statement in which the 41-year-old prince had changed his tone and pledged to "always be ready to help and support His Majesty the King and his Crown Prince". The monarchy ruling Jordan -- a country long regarded as a pro-Western anchor of stability in a turbulent region-- declared it was settling the matter "within the framework of the Hashemite family". Amman's prosecutor general on Tuesday banned the publication of any information about the investigation into what the government has called a "wicked" plot against Jordan involving unnamed foreign entities. "The ban on publication involves all audiovisual media and social networks, as well as the publication of all images or video clips relating to this subject on pain of legal action." The government says he liaised with people linked to foreign parties in a plot to destabilise Jordan and that he had been under investigation for some time. Prince Hamza said in a voice recording released by Jordan's opposition on Monday that he would not comply after being barred from any activity and told to keep quiet. While not considered a direct threat to the king, Hamza in recent weeks visited tribal gatherings where the king and his government have been criticised more openly. Saudi Arabia was among the countries to issue statements of support to King Abdullah, and on Monday Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan travelled to Amman to meet his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, the Jordanian foreign ministry said. "King Salman reaffirmed the kingdom's support to all measures to protect Jordan and its interests," Saudi state TV reported. King Abdullah had expressed "appreciation for the kingdom's continuous support to Jordan," it said. (With inputs from agencies)

Jordan bans media coverage of royal rift, labels it a family affair

The former crown prince of Jordan, Prince Hamzah bin Hussein, the half-brother of King Abdullah, says he has been placed under house arrest. He also accuses the country's leaders of corruption, incompetence and harassment.

Former Prince of Jordan says he is under house arrest

Several suspects have been arrested in a security sweep in Jordan, as the army cautioned a half-brother of King Abdullah II against damaging the country's security.

Official news agency Petra named former close aides to the royal family Bassem Awadallah, chief of the royal court in 2007-2008, and Sherif Hassan bin Zaid among an unspecified number of suspects arrested on late Saturday night. Sherif is a title given to those close to the royal family in Jordan.

Videos posted online showed a heavy police deployment in the Dabouq area near the royal palaces, while the former crown prince Hamzah bin Hussein said he was confined to his home.

In a video the BBC said it obtained from his lawyer, Prince Hamzah said a number of his friends had been arrested, his security removed and his internet and phone lines cut.

He denied being part of "any conspiracy or nefarious organisation", but said the Hashemite kingdom had "become stymied in corruption, in nepotism, and in misrule" where no-one was allowed to criticise the authorities.

In a statement published by the state news agency, the military said the warning to Prince Hamzah was part of a broader, ongoing security investigation in which a former minister, a junior member of the royal family and unnamed others were detained.

Prince Hamzah said in a video recording he was under house arrest and had been told to stay at home and not contact anyone.

Joint Chiefs of Staff head, Major General Yousef Huneiti said the prince had been "asked to stop some activities that could be used to shake the stability and security of Jordan".

The Washington Post has, meanwhile, alleged the former crown prince was "placed under restriction" as part of a probe into an alleged plot to unseat the king.

The alleged plot "included at least one other Jordanian royal as well as tribal leaders and members of the country's security establishment," the US daily added.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Washington was "closely following" the events in its close regional ally.

Neighbouring Saudi Arabia reacted swiftly to developments in Amman.

"The kingdom stresses its full support for the Hashemite kingdom of Jordan ... and for the decisions and measures taken by King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Hussein to safeguard security and stability," it said.

HISTORY

Hamzah is the eldest son of late King Hussein and his American wife Queen Noor. He has good relations officially with Abdullah, his half-brother, and is a popular figure close to tribal leaders.

Abdullah had appointed Hamzah crown prince in 1999 in line with Hussein's dying wish, but in 2004 stripped him of the title and gave it to his own eldest son Hussein.

Prince Hamzah is not seen as a major threat to Jordan`s monarchy and has been marginalised for years, but the move against him represents the first such incident involving a close member of the royal family since King Abdullah came to the throne.

The authorities have become increasingly concerned with his efforts to build ties with disgruntled figures within powerful tribes.

The army denied Saturday that Prince Hamzah, who holds no official position, had been detained.

Saturday's security sweep comes as Jordan prepares to mark 100 years since the new kingdom then named Transjordan was established alongside Palestine under British mandate.

It declared independence in 1946, and despite having little oil wealth, severely lacking water and repeatedly being rocked by wars on its borders, the kingdom has managed to survive the regional upheavals.

Jordan's neighbours, allies voice support over its security moves

Marwa Alomari’s compassionate and patient style made her a popular English teacher, filling her classes in Irbid, Jordan, with eager students and her off hours with private tutoring.

A university graduate, she was paid up to $3,000 a month, far more than most fellow Jordanians.

But after she married an army officer and moved in with his family, he began to resent that she was paid more than he was. Even though she contributed to the household with both money and housework, he and his family discouraged her from working and the marriage nearly fell apart, she said.

“I became adamant that I wasn’t going to quit, but eventually I found no support and I just got tired and gave up,” said Alomari, 35. “I went back to cooking, cleaning, gossiping with women. And this wasn’t my ambition.”

Her story reflects what is happening across Jordan — a small Arab monarchy that has been a steadfast ally of Western countries — where women’s status in terms of labor force participation, health and politics has been regressing for years, even lagging behind more conservative countries in the region.

For the past 10 years, the country has sat near the bottom of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report, which tracks gaps between women and men in employment, education, health and politics.

After big gains over the past three decades, more women than men in the country now graduate from university, and women also have higher literacy rates.

Despite that, 86% of women in the country are absent from the workforce, according to government figures and the latest Global Gender Gap Report. That is the highest rate in the world for a country not at war, according to the World Bank.

In contrast, Western Europe has moved the most toward gender parity and is continuing in that direction, followed by North America.

And the effects are felt far beyond economics.

“As long as women are absent from the labor market, they are absent from the public sphere,” said Asma Khader, the president of the nonprofit group Sisterhood is Global Institute in Jordan. “Top officials are afraid to impose decisions favoring women, because society is conservative. But I believe when there is real economic reform, women will become empowered and make demands.”

With its close ties to the West, an outspoken queen, and female members of parliament and police officers, Jordan has long had the image of a relatively progressive kingdom in a conservative neighborhood. But recently, some Gulf neighbors have seen an increasing number of female-led startups and changes in employment legislation that have led to growing opportunities for women.

In Jordan, the head of the household is usually defined as the husband, unless he is dead, missing or has lost his citizenship. This gives him sole guardianship over children, with authority over matters such as travel, citizenship and opening bank accounts. In Saudi Arabia, though, recent amendments allowed women to also be considered a “head of household,” at least in theory.

Traditional attitudes, discriminatory legislation, a lack of access to public transportation and pay disparities are hindering women’s advancement in Jordan.

Elections for the country’s 130-seat parliament in November were a testament to women’s shrinking role. Voter turnout was low, and female candidates lost starkly. Women did not take a single seat beyond the quota of 15 female legislators, compared with 20 in the previous parliament.

Sara Ababneh, an assistant professor of politics and international relations at the University of Jordan, said the problem went beyond elections.

“Sometimes we talk about women’s representation — we say that there should be more women ministers,” she said. “But we never talk about overall rights and real political empowerment.”

Recent World Bank research found that men in Jordan are paid as much as 40% more than women are for the same job in the private sector. In the public sector, the gap is 28%.

The disparity in employment — 53% of men are in the labor force compared with 14% of women — is nearly double that of nearby countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Traditional roles in Jordan are enshrined in laws that differentiate between women’s and men’s rights and responsibilities. There is no law prohibiting gender discrimination in the workplace. And while the country's constitution provides that “every worker shall receive wages commensurate with the quantity and quality of his work,” there is no right to equal pay for women and men.

For Muslims, who make up most of Jordan’s population of nearly 11 million, matters of marriage, divorce, child custody and inheritance are governed by Shariah, or Islamic law, and adjudicated in Shariah courts rather than civil or military courts. Under Shariah law, for example, women can inherit property, but daughters receive half as much as sons.

And during the Arab Spring a decade ago, many women and human rights activists assailed a parliamentary committee for breaking its promise to include the word gender in the constitution’s Article 6, which is supposed to guarantee the equality of all Jordanians. It states, “There shall be no discrimination between Jordanians with regard to their rights and duties on grounds of race, language or religion.”

Despite the obstacles, some women have managed to succeed professionally.

Jamileh Shetewi is by all accounts an exception among Jordanian women. She grew up in a one-room mud-walled home with her eight siblings and parents, and spent her childhood days picking tomatoes, eggplants and bananas in hot and shadeless farms with her four sisters.

The odds were stacked against her. She dropped out of school at age 17 and married at 18. As a young farmer from 1997 to 2002, she was paid $3 a day less than the men she worked alongside, and she had to cook for them on top of her job.

She decided to go back to school, and went on to earn a doctorate in archaeology. Today she heads the Department of Antiquities for the Jordan Valley region.

“Yes, I defied all expectations,” said Shetewi, 50. “I fought and shattered the culture of shame.” But without changing laws and perceptions, she said, most women will not be able to advance.

“I didn’t care what people had to say, and I told my husband, ‘I need your support to make our lives better,’” she said. “We aren’t the enemy. Do you think a country can reform and prosper without half its population?”

Gender gap persists in Jordan’s work force

The former crown prince of Jordan Hamzah bin Hussein has been under house arrest. The military has sent a warning to the ex-crown prince asking him to halt the actions targeting the security and stability of the country.

Former prince of Jordan says, he is under house arrest

Jordan's health minister resigned on Saturday after six people died following an oxygen outage in a hospital treating coronavirus patients and police were deployed to hold back angry relatives, state media said.

The oxygen failure earlier on Saturday hit intensive care, maternity, and coronavirus wards in the new Salt government hospital west of the capital Amman.

A government spokesman said Prime Minister Bisher al Khasawneh asked Health Minister Nathir Obeidat to resign over the accident for which Obeidat had earlier said he carried 'moral responsibility'.

Obeidat said initial investigations showed the six deaths were caused by a one-hour disruption in oxygen to the wards and that prosecutors were handling the case.
Jordan's King Abdullah also later visited the hospital.

Jordan is facing a spike in Covid-19 infections attributed mainly to the fast transmission of the British variant of the virus. It announced last week stricter measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 and reimposed a full lockdown on Fridays.

The country reported 8,300 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday, the highest daily death toll since the pandemic first surfaced in the kingdom a year ago.

Jordan, with a population of around 10 million, has recorded 385,533 cases of Covid-19 and 5,224 deaths.
