A civil war-like situation is brewing within the Democrat ranks where voters as well as leaders are no longer in favour of incumbent United States President&nbsp;Joe Biden continuing his re-election bid. According to a new Suffolk University/Boston Globe poll, nearly two-thirds of&nbsp;Massachusetts Democrats and left-leaning voters want a nominee other than Biden to take on his Republican rival Donald Trump in November's election.&nbsp;

While GOP lawmakers have uniformly embraced Trump with MAGA voters more united than ever after the failed assassination bid against the former president, the Democrats continue to wait anxiously about the future of their presidential nominee.&nbsp;

Nearly 69&nbsp;per cent of Republican-leaning voters said they are satisfied with Trump as the party’s nominee.&nbsp;On the other hand, only 29 per cent of Democrat and Democratic-leaning voters are in favour of Biden. 64 per cent said they would prefer if the party put forward someone else.

<h2>What is Biden saying?</h2>

Biden said he would only consider dropping out of the race if a doctor told him directly that he had a medical condition that made that necessary.

“If I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, you got this problem and that problem,” Biden said in a recent&nbsp;interview.&nbsp;

The US president&nbsp;conceded that he “made a serious mistake in the whole debate” and would re-evaluate his decision if one of his doctors changed their assessment of him.

Will Biden quit US presidential race? What are Democrats saying and what do the polls suggest?

US President Joe Biden doubled down on his insistence that he will stay in the White House race, despite a growing Democrat revolt that raised speculation he could bow out as soon as this weekend.

“The stakes are high, and the choice is clear. Together, we will win," the 81-year-old said in a written statement from the Delaware beach home where he is recovering from Covid.

Biden vowed to return to the campaign trail next week, and took aim at Donald Trump's "dark" speech accepting his nomination at the Republican National Convention on Thursday.

But his defiance came as six more House Democrats and another senator joined those publicly calling on him to quit November's election out of concerns over slipping polls and worries about his health.

Four of them did so jointly in a letter urging Biden to "pass the torch." Significantly, they included members of the crucial Black and Hispanic caucuses that had so far stayed loyal to him.

Around 25 House Democrats and three senators have now called on Biden to drop out since a disastrous debate performance against Trump and a series of polls showing the Republican on course to win back the White House.

Reports sourced to anonymous sources swirled in US media that Biden was making a plan for a dignified exit in the coming days, accepting warnings from senior Democrats that his time was up.

But his campaign also pushed back, saying that while there had been some "slippage" in support, he was still the best candidate.

"Absolutely the president's in this race," campaign chairwoman Jen O'Malley Dillon told MSNBC's Morning Joe program. "Joe Biden is more committed than ever to beat Donald Trump."

<h2>'Fight on our hands'</h2>

The pressure had mounted dramatically on Thursday with reports that former president Barack Obama, former House speaker Nancy Pelosi and the party's current leaders in the Senate and House had all expressed concerns behind the scenes.

The current House Democratic minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, was evasive on Friday, saying "it's his decision to make".

"The ticket that exists right now is a ticket we can win on," he told WNYC radio station, adding however that "we have a fight on our hands."

Biden beat Trump in 2020, becoming the oldest president in US history in the process. But as concerns mount over his health, a series of recent polls have shown him trailing Trump in the 2024 race, including in all battleground states that are essential to winning the US electoral college system.

Amid party defections, media speculation is mounting that Biden is using his weekend in Delaware to consult family members and mull over the path ahead.

NBC News reported that some of Biden's family had "discussed what an exit from his campaign might look like" although there was no final decision to do so.

It would involve a "carefully calculated plan" based on his own timing, to give some dignity to what would be a historically late decision by a sitting US president not to run.

Any decision by Biden to step aside less than four months from the November 5 election would also have to try to avoid chaos in the Democratic party over his successor as nominee.

The frontrunner would be Vice President Kamala Harris, whose prospects in a match-up with Trump have been quietly gamed by campaign officials as the crisis around Biden grew.

The split-screen has been particularly stark as Trump gave a triumphant speech at the Republican convention in Milwaukee on Thursday, just days after surviving an assassination bid.

Morning news brief: Trump recounts shooting at RNC; explosion rocks Tel Aviv, and more

In his recent speech, former President Donald Trump announced a raft of policy proposals that set him quite radically apart from the Biden Administration on economy, immigration, and foreign policy. Trump vowed to increase oil production, finish the wall between the United States and Mexico, and end wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Visibly absent was abortion—a very controversial matter among Republicans that Democrats are using to campaign against him.

Trump appeased a critical voter concern—inflation—by promising to "end the inflation crisis" by increasing oil drilling to lower energy costs, which would bring down the prices of transportation, manufacturing, and household products. "So much starts with energy," Trump said. "We are a nation that has the opportunity to make an absolute fortune with its energy."

He said he would make the US "energy dominant" and a global supplier of energy, as he also knocked Democrats' climate policies as a "green new scam" that is fueling inflationary pressures. Instead, he suggested diverting money from climate projects to “important projects like roads, bridges, dams.”

Trump also promised to roll back Biden's electric vehicle policies on day one, putting himself squarely against incentives for EV manufacturing and sales.

On immigration, Trump vowed to rein in illegal immigration and shut down the United States-Mexico border, saying undocumented immigrants are inflaming violent crime and stealing American jobs. He showed a chart of illegal immigration patterns, saying, "Under the Trump Administration, if you came in illegally, you were apprehended immediately and you were deported," he said. “You went right back. The current administration terminated every single one of those great Trump policies that I put in place to seal the border.”

Trump ran through a few foreign policy positions during his speech. He vowed to return American hostages held by Hamas, he said his leadership keeps the Russians at bay, and of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, Trump said, "I think he misses me."

One might realise that Trump, in his speech, has insisted on highlighting a strategy of differences between himself and Biden on issues such as energy dominance, stricter immigration controls, and—most importantly—an assertive foreign policy. His pledges were more in tune with the priorities of his administration, those the American people would want: strong economic and security policies.

US elections 2024: President Biden tests positive for COVID-19

US President Joe Biden has become 'more receptive' to the idea of dropping out of the presidential race amid growing apprehensions regarding his declining cognitive capabilities.&nbsp;

Biden held discussions around the topic with some Democrat leaders, according to a report in the&nbsp;New York Times. Though Biden has not indicated that he is certainly opting out of the re-election bid, the Democrats said he had been willing to listen to 'rundowns of new and worrying polling data'.&nbsp;

“He’s being receptive. Not as defiant as he is publicly,” one senior Democratic adviser was quoted as saying.&nbsp;

“He’s gone from saying, ‘Kamala can’t win,’ to ‘Do you think Kamala can win?'. It’s still unclear where he’s going to land but seems to be listening."

Notably, this phone call marked the second conversation between the California lawmaker and Biden since the president’s disastrous debate on June 27.&nbsp;

The actual date of the conversation was not clear, but the source described it as being within the last week. Pelosi and Biden also spoke in early July.

Additionally, former president Barack Obama, who steadfastly supported Biden during his term, has&nbsp;also now told allies that Biden needed to reconsider his re-election bid, according to news agency AFP.&nbsp;

Obama is of the view that there was no path to victory for the 81-year-old who&nbsp;should "seriously consider the viability of his candidacy".&nbsp;

<h2>Biden struggling in public life</h2>

Biden has been fluffing his lines in public speeches for a long time but his conduct at last month's presidential debate was perhaps the last straw that&nbsp;led even the biggest Democrat leaders to voice their concerns openly about the president.&nbsp;

During the last day of the NATO Summit in Washington last week,&nbsp;Biden mistakenly referred to his Ukrainian counterpart, President Volodymyr Zelensky as "President Putin".&nbsp;

Later, during&nbsp;his highly-anticipated solo press conference in Washington, Biden made another gaffe by referring to&nbsp;Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump”.&nbsp;

A recent poll conducted by ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos revealed that two-thirds of Americans want Biden to step aside as the Democrat nominee for the presidential post.&nbsp;

As many as 67 per cent of the respondents want the incumbent president&nbsp;to drop from the race, while 85 per cent believe that the Democrat&nbsp;leader is too old for a second term.&nbsp;

US President Joe Biden has become 'more receptive' to the idea of dropping out of the presidential race amid growing apprehensions regarding his declining cognitive capabilities. Biden held discussions around the topic with some Democrat leaders, according to a report in the New York Times. Though Biden has not indicated that he is certainly opting out of the re-election bid, the Democrats said he had been willing to listen to 'rundowns of new and worrying polling data'. “He’s being receptive. Not as defiant as he is publicly,” one senior Democratic adviser was quoted as saying. “He’s gone from saying, ‘Kamala can’t win,’ to ‘Do you think Kamala can win?'. It’s still unclear where he’s going to land but seems to be listening." Some social media users have found the cover extremely offensive as it was released just a few days after Trump's assassination bid and a few hours after Biden revealed that he tested positive for COVID-19 with mild symptoms.&nbsp;

The magazine posted the image on social media platforms, promoting it as its "new Health Issue". It said that the edition features "medical breakthroughs and scandals, plus one political convulsion: the President’s seeming deterioration."&nbsp;

Florida man arrested after making death threats against Biden

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) told members of Congress on Wednesday (Jul&nbsp;17) that gunman Thomas Crooks, who attempted to kill former United States President Donald Trump had used his smartphone to search for images of the Republican leader as well as his successor&nbsp;Joe Biden.&nbsp;&nbsp;

FBI stated that Crooks also searched for&nbsp;dates of Trump appearances and the Democratic National Convention (DNC) where Democrats are expected to certify Biden's nomination for president.

Despite&nbsp;uncovering and cracking two of Crooks' mobile phones, the FBI said it had not found any definitive evidence to suggest that the 20-year-old shooter had strong partisan political views.&nbsp;

Further investigation of Crooks'&nbsp;devices revealed that he also searched about the director of the FBI, Christopher Wray, and US Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Crooks was killed by the US Secret Service (SS) last Saturday (Jul 13) after he fired multiple rounds from an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in a bid to&nbsp;assassinate Trump. The former president was saved by mere inches as the bullet meant for his head, only grazed the top portion of his right ear.&nbsp;

Prior to being neutralised by the SS, Crooks managed to evade the heavy security arrangement and climbed to the roof of a building that brought him within a 130-metre radius of Trump. Reports indicate that the 20-year-old had pointed his rifle at a local law enforcement officer who had climbed the roof and moments later managed to take a shot at Trump.&nbsp;

According to reports Crooks was a loner who had been bullied in high school.&nbsp;Crooks' former classmates at Bethel Park High School described him as smart but standoffish who maintained his distance and could often be spotted wearing headphones and sitting alone at lunch - looking at his phone.&nbsp;

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) told members of Congress on Wednesday (Jul 17) that gunman Thomas Crooks, who attempted to kill former United States President Donald Trump had used his smartphone to search for images of the Republican leader as well as his successor Joe Biden. FBI stated that Crooks also searched for dates of Trump appearances and the Democratic National Convention (DNC) where Democrats are expected to certify Biden's nomination for president. Despite uncovering and cracking two of Crooks' mobile phones, the FBI said it had not found any definitive evidence to suggest that the 20-year-old shooter had strong partisan political views. Further investigation of Crooks' devices revealed that he also searched about the director of the FBI, Christopher Wray, and US Attorney General Merrick Garland. Crooks was killed by the US Secret Service (SS) last Saturday (Jul 13) after he fired multiple rounds from an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in a bid to assassinate Trump. The former president was saved by mere inches as the bullet meant for his head, only grazed the top portion of his right ear. Prior to being neutralised by the SS, Crooks managed to evade the heavy security arrangement and climbed to the roof of a building that brought him within a 130-metre radius of Trump. Reports indicate that the 20-year-old had pointed his rifle at a local law enforcement officer who had climbed the roof and moments later managed to take a shot at Trump. Secret Service spotted the shooter on the roof TWENTY MINUTES before the shooting. It’s becoming increasingly untenable to attribute this entirely to incompetence. It is inconceivable that Trump was allowed to take the stage ten minutes after a man who’d already been identified… — Matt Walsh (@MattWalshBlog) July 18, 2024 × Watch | US: Suspected Trump rally shooter was a 'quiet', 'lonely' & 'bullied' child in school: Reports Who was Thomas Crooks? According to reports Crooks was a loner who had been bullied in high school. Crooks' former classmates at Bethel Park High School described him as smart but standoffish who maintained his distance and could often be spotted wearing headphones and sitting alone at lunch - looking at his phone. "He sat by himself, didn't talk to anyone, didn't even try to make conversation. He was an odd kid but nothing about him seemed dangerous," said Crooks' schoolmate, 17-year-old Liam Campbell. Nancy Pelosi, former House Speaker privately told US President Joe Biden in a recent conversation that various polls&nbsp;indicate&nbsp;that he cannot defeat Donald Trump and that his continued pursuit of a second term could risk Democrats' chances of winning the House in November, according to sources.

On hearing this, the president replied that he has seen polls that show he can win, one source told&nbsp;CNN.

At one point, Pelosi even asked Mike Donilon, Biden’s longtime adviser, to get on the line to talk over the data, said another source.

Vivek Ramaswamy backs Donald Trump in fiery RNC speech, says Republican can 'actually UNITE this country'

US President Joe Biden has renewed his call for Congress to ban high-powered firearms, such as the AR-15-style rifle that was used recently by the shooter who tried to assassinate former president Donald Trump. Speaking at a convention in Las Vegas, Biden called for the need for stringent gun control measures.

"An AR-15 was used in the shooting of Donald Trump, just as other assault weapons were used to kill so many others, including children," Biden stated. "It’s time to outlaw them. I did it once and I will do it again."

The Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, commonly known as the assault weapons ban, was originally enacted in 1994 but expired in 2004. Efforts to renew the ban have repeatedly stalled in Congress.

Biden also called for a reduction in political hostility and a rejection of all forms of violence.

"If we are gonna speak about violence, we are gonna speak about guns. More children in America died of gunshot wounds than any other reason. That is sick," Biden said. "And it’s sheer cowardice if we do nothing about it. So, you wanna stand against violence in America, then join me in getting these weapons of war off the streets of America."

Since taking office, Biden has made over 70 appeals to Congress to renew the assault weapons ban, which would primarily target the AR-15, the most popular gun in America, The Independent reported.&nbsp;

The suspected shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, reportedly stole&nbsp;the AR-15 from his father. Although&nbsp;the minimum age for buying rifles and shotguns is 18 in Pennsylvania from where Crooks hails.

Polling from Ipsos and The Washington Post indicates that roughly 16 million Americans own at least one AR-15-style rifle. These rifles, originally designed for military use, have been involved in 10 of the 17 deadliest mass shootings since 2012.

Nikki Haley endorsed Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Tuesday (July 16) as the party seeks to promote unity and attract voters beyond Biden's base.

"I'll start by making one thing perfectly clear," Haley said. "Donald Trump has my strong endorsement."&nbsp;

Earlier, when Haley dropped out of the primary race against Trump in March, she refused to endorse him, stating he needed to earn the votes of the people who did not support him.

In his remarks, he also repeatedly attacked Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and called on Americans to “lower the temperature” of the campaign in the Oval Office address on Sunday (July 14).

“Donald Trump’s presidency was hell for black America,” said Biden, at one point.

Biden calls Kamala Harris a potential 'president' candidate for United States

US President Joe Biden is considering proposals to reform the Supreme Court, which may include implementing term limits and establishing a new ethics code for the predominantly conservative bench, according to media reports.

With a 6-3 conservative majority, the Supreme Court has delivered several significant setbacks to Democratic priorities in recent years, including the repeal of the nationwide right to abortion. President Biden has increasingly expressed his disagreement with these decisions.

This year the court significantly rolled back the power of federal agencies, while also partially ruling in early July in favour of ex-president Donald Trump's immunity claims.

Biden, who is seeking re-election in November against Donald Trump, has previously opposed calls to overhaul or modify&nbsp;the court of nine lifetime-appointed justices, which includes three nominated by his Republican predecessor.

But this may change soon, according to several US media reports, which cite unnamed sources familiar with the planning.

However, it was unclear whether Biden would come out in support of the measures in near future or in his second term if he wins the presidential election.

Progressive groups are aiming to use the Supreme Court to motivate voters to support Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. They are investing millions of dollars in campaigns designed to educate voters about the impact the next president will have on the high court.

Biden denounces political violence, calls for unity after Trump assassination attempt

In trying to analyse events such as the failed assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump, it is best to look not just at what happened but the circumstances in which it did. As conspiracy theories float amid a bitter contest between Republican Trump and incumbent Democrat President Joe Biden, what is clearly evident is that we have a perfect storm of sorts in US politics -- and by extension, global politics.&nbsp;

A perfect storm, idiomatically speaking, refers to a particularly bad situation caused by a combination of unfavourable circumstances. That description now fits the Democrats more than the Republicans but those swearing by Biden (they are a dwindling but loud number) will wave their flags to say the very assassination attempt shows what is wrong with an America ruled by Republicans, in which there is no control on a gun culture in which random individuals, including depressed or deranged schoolkids, go on trigger-happy sprees.&nbsp;

But that would be a nuance rather than an obvious truth in the backdrop of what is going on in the United States. If the political assassinations of Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in India are any indication, Trump's Republicans may be heading for a win aided by what we might call a sympathy wave though that description does not seem to fit Trump, the Republicans or the US. But Trump certainly has a trump card of sorts to play as his clenched fist and a blood-smeared face is an image bound to pull in fence-sitters in the November 5 elections.&nbsp;

Given that conspiracy theories are floating around still on who was behind Lee Harvey Oswald, the emotionally disturbed US Marine veteran who killed President John F. Kennedy in 1963, stories and rumours on Thomas Mathew Crooks, who was killed by security men after the 20-year-old's attempt to kill Trump, are not likely to die out anytime soon. This is more so as everything gets connected with the elections. Things get complicated by the fact that Crooks has been a registered Republican though he contributed $15 once to a progressive group.

What matters more than campaign noises, however, is the fact that the contest is between a bumbling Biden and a tenacious Trump.&nbsp;

If strong leadership, especially in a presidential system like that of the US, is a factor, the Republican candidate towers over his rival, despite his conviction in a hush money scandal involving a porn star and a series of past financial irregularities in his career as a real estate tycoon. But he seems at this point to have a teflon coating added to his notoriously thick skin. Former US president Ronald Reagan was called the "Teflon President" because criticism or blame never seemed to stick on him. Like Trump, he also survived an assassination attempt. Trump has now inherited Reagan's teflon image, and the halo of victimhood may add another layer that stops political bullets.&nbsp;

Contrast him with Biden, who has been the subject of calls to quit the presidential race by his most avowed supporters including big Hollywood stars. Biden's skin is as thick as that of Trump as he has been rejecting such calls, even as he is being virtually laughed out of the race by Internet memes and real stories of his famous forgetfulness.

The Trump assassination bid happened even as the world was bantering over Biden&nbsp;mistakenly referring to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Putin. It doesn't get more embarrassing for a US prez to refer to a head of state at war by the name of the one he is at war with.&nbsp;

The interesting irony in all is that the US economy is doing rather well, thank you. The Democrats rode to power in 1992 under ex-president Bill Clinton with one of the catchy campaign phrases used by a strategist&nbsp;being "It is the economy, stupid."&nbsp;

"It is NOT the economy, stupid" may well be the right theme for the Democrats as jobs run high. Inflation is an issue for those chasing food and petrol prices but is on the lower side in the eyes of professional market economists. Pet Republican issues such as illegal immigration, restricted rights to abortion may look stronger to voters.&nbsp;

Democrats would hit hard on gun control but that would be a valiant attempt to piggyback on rivals. If high-profile leadership muscle comes into the picture, Biden looks profoundly weak, to say the least.&nbsp;

Overall, I would expect a further decline of the US as a superpower, unless the Democrats throw some unexpected punch with a change in candidate or something.&nbsp;

The US can hardly be expected to show some superpower muscle when its internal troubles are making it the Divided States of America. Internal instability in the US is a matter of global concern.&nbsp;

Whether it is a prolonged war in Ukraine or the crisis in Gaza, international diplomacy is in a state of drift and that may worsen if the US does not show strong, ethical global leadership. Elections in France and the UK have also thrown up verdicts that show that internal factors may overpower external concerns in the West as a whole.&nbsp;

Trump is essentially an inward-looking politician, with a clear bias for his abrasive home agenda and old-fashioned white conservatism. He does not have superpower pretense unless it comes to strutting gestures that aid his flashy style or deal-making for American business.&nbsp;

That should be worrying for those who expect the US to play a judicious, stabilising role as a superpower, a label that looks increasingly doubtful. The coming months are going to be an anxious wait-and-watch period for those watching China's expanding footprint and expecting a healthy geopolitical balance.

In trying to analyse events such as the failed assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump, it is best to look not just at what happened but the circumstances in which it did. As conspiracy theories float amid a bitter contest between Republican Trump and incumbent Democrat President Joe Biden, what is clearly evident is that we have a perfect storm of sorts in US politics -- and by extension, global politics. A perfect storm, idiomatically speaking, refers to a particularly bad situation caused by a combination of unfavourable circumstances. That description now fits the Democrats more than the Republicans but those swearing by Biden (they are a dwindling but loud number) will wave their flags to say the very assassination attempt shows what is wrong with an America ruled by Republicans, in which there is no control on a gun culture in which random individuals, including depressed or deranged schoolkids, go on trigger-happy sprees. But that would be a nuance rather than an obvious truth in the backdrop of what is going on in the United States. If the political assassinations of Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in India are any indication, Trump's Republicans may be heading for a win aided by what we might call a sympathy wave though that description does not seem to fit Trump, the Republicans or the US. But Trump certainly has a trump card of sorts to play as his clenched fist and a blood-smeared face is an image bound to pull in fence-sitters in the November 5 elections. What matters more than campaign noises, however, is the fact that the contest is between a bumbling Biden and a tenacious Trump. If strong leadership, especially in a presidential system like that of the US, is a factor, the Republican candidate towers over his rival, despite his conviction in a hush money scandal involving a porn star and a series of past financial irregularities in his career as a real estate tycoon. But he seems at this point to have a teflon coating added to his notoriously thick skin. Former US president Ronald Reagan was called the "Teflon President" because criticism or blame never seemed to stick on him. Like Trump, he also survived an assassination attempt. Trump has now inherited Reagan's teflon image, and the halo of victimhood may add another layer that stops political bullets. The Trump assassination bid happened even as the world was bantering over Biden mistakenly referring to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Putin. It doesn't get more embarrassing for a US prez to refer to a head of state at war by the name of the one he is at war with. WATCH | Trump rally shooting: Former President shot at Pennsylvania rally The interesting irony in all is that the US economy is doing rather well, thank you. The Democrats rode to power in 1992 under ex-president Bill Clinton with one of the catchy campaign phrases used by a strategist being "It is the economy, stupid." "It is NOT the economy, stupid" may well be the right theme for the Democrats as jobs run high. Inflation is an issue for those chasing food and petrol prices but is on the lower side in the eyes of professional market economists. Pet Republican issues such as illegal immigration, restricted rights to abortion may look stronger to voters. Democrats would hit hard on gun control but that would be a valiant attempt to piggyback on rivals. If high-profile leadership muscle comes into the picture, Biden looks profoundly weak, to say the least. Overall, I would expect a further decline of the US as a superpower, unless the Democrats throw some unexpected punch with a change in candidate or something. The US can hardly be expected to show some superpower muscle when its internal troubles are making it the Divided States of America. Internal instability in the US is a matter of global concern. Biden was closing out NATO's three-day 75th anniversary summit in Washington, while vowing, "Ukraine will prevail" against Russian President Vladimir Putin and hailing the courage of Ukraine's iconic wartime leader, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Turning to Zelensky, Biden said, "Ladies and gentlemen, President Putin."

Biden quickly corrected himself and Zelensky, a former comedian, promptly said, "I am better than Putin."

No leaders openly questioned Biden's competence, who at 81, is six years older than the alliance itself.

Many NATO leaders fear a victory in November of Trump, who has loudly criticised the alliance, with its promise of collective defence, as an unfair burden on the United States.
