The 81-year-old Biden is the oldest US President and has for weeks been facing an uphill battle to convince his party that he still has the political stamina for another term in the White House. Let's take a look at his political career and more. Joe Biden: Early life Born November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Joe Biden was raised a devout Catholic and is only the second Catholic US President after John F. Kennedy. He has a bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware and a law degree from Syracuse University. Joe Biden: Political career and Tragedies Biden started his political career in 1970, at 27 years of age, when he was elected to public office as a council member of the New Castle County Council. He served in office for two years. In November 1972, at the age of 29 years, he was elected as the Delaware senator. Just a month after he was elected to the US Senate, he lost his wife Neilia Biden and one-year-old daughter, Naomi, in an automobile accident. His sons Beau and Hunter were also in the vehicle. While they were injured, they survived the tragic accident. Joe Biden remained a senator for 36 years and served during the terms of eight US Presidents. In 2015, he lost his son Beau to cancer. He went on to serve as Vice President of the United States for both of Barack Obama's terms, from 2009 to 2017. In 2020, he was elected to his current post as the 46th President of the United States.
