Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump, had pointed his AR-style rifle at a local law enforcement officer who climbed the roof. The officer, threatened by Crooks, retreated down the ladder and moments later, Trump was shot, law enforcement officials told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Since the incident, numerous witnesses have come forward and claimed that they informed the US Secret Service officials and other local authorities about the presence of a gunman on the roof of a building near the rally.

“We noticed the guy crawling, bear-crawling, up the roof of the building beside us, 50ft away from us,” one of the witnesses told BBC.

Despite identifying the rooftop as a potentially vulnerable point in the security detail of the former president, the Secret Service did not act in time.

US President Joe Biden took the stage in front of Michigan voters on Friday (Jul 12), insisting that he was 'OK' for the run-in against former president Donald Trump but ended up making another gaffe.

US President Joe Biden took the stage in front of Michigan voters on Friday (Jul 12), insisting that he was 'OK' for the run-in against former president Donald Trump but ended up making another gaffe. Biden was campaigning in the crucial swing state, a day after misidentifying Volodymyr Zelensky and Kamala Harris as President Putin and Trump respectively in his public speeches. “I promise you, I am – I’m OK,” said Biden to his supporters at a restaurant before heading to the larger rally in Detroit. "Folks, you've probably noticed, there’s a lot of speculation lately 'What’s Joe Biden going to do? Is he going to stay in the race? Is he going to drop out? I am running and we're going to win. I'm not going to change that," he added during the main event at Renaissance High School in Detroit. Attempting to shout out Democrat leader Rep. Debbie Dingell - a five-term congresswoman, Biden made the error, catching flak from opponents yet again. “Members of Congress – Debbie Haley,” Biden said. “And by the way, I want you to know that I’ve spent a lot of time with Debbie,” he added. “She helped me a lot.” Afterwards, Biden made comparisons of Dingell’s resemblance to his wife, First Lady Jill Biden. “I forget which event we were at, and someone said, you’re [Dingell] his wife, aren’t you?” Biden, who didn’t correct the gaffe, admitted much later in the event that “sometimes I confuse names". A bill that was signed into law by President Joe Biden strengthens US support for Tibet and encourages communication between China and the Dalai Lama in the hopes of reaching a peaceful agreement on the status and governance of the remote Himalayan province.

US President Joe Biden Signs historic law bill enhancing support for Tibet | China strongly condemns

President Joe Biden has signed into law a bill which enhances U.S. support for Tibet and promotes dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama towards a peaceful resolution of the dispute over the status and governance of the remote Himalayan region.

China had opposed the Resolve Tibet Act and described it as a destabilising Act. The Act was passed by the House of Representatives last February, and it cleared the Senate in May.

“Today, I have signed into law S. 138, the "Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act" (the "Act"). I share the Congress's bipartisan commitment to advancing the human rights of Tibetans and supporting efforts to preserve their distinct linguistic, cultural, and religious heritage,” Biden said on Friday in a late-night statement.

“My Administration will continue to call on the People's Republic of China to resume direct dialogue, without preconditions, with the Dalai Lama, or his representatives, to seek a settlement that resolves differences and leads to a negotiated agreement on Tibet,” Biden said.

The 14th Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 and came to India, where he set up the government-in-exile at Dharamshala in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

From 2002 to 2010, the Dalai Lama’s representatives and the Chinese government held nine rounds of dialogue that did not produce any concrete outcome.

China views the 89-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader, who is based in India, as a "separatist" who is working to split Tibet from the rest of the country.

The Act does not change longstanding bipartisan US policy to recognise the Tibet Autonomous Region and other Tibetan areas of China as part of the People's Republic of China (PRC), a policy decision that Biden said falls within his authority to recognise foreign states and the territorial bounds of such states.

The Act enhances US support for Tibet, empowering State Department officials to actively and directly counter disinformation about Tibet from the Chinese government.

It rejects false claims that Tibet has been part of China since “ancient times,” pushing for negotiations without preconditions between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama or his representatives or the democratically elected leaders of the Tibetan community and affirming the State Department’s responsibility to coordinate with other governments in multilateral efforts toward the goal of a negotiated agreement on Tibet.

In June, China had opposed the bill.

“Anyone or any force who attempts to destabilise Xizang to contain or suppress China will not succeed,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing.

“The US should not sign the bill. China will take resolute measures to defend its sovereignty, security and development interests,” he said.

Meanwhile, the State Department imposed visa restrictions on several Chinese officials for their involvement in the repression of marginalised religious and ethnic communities.

“The PRC has not lived up to its commitments to respect and protect human rights, as demonstrated by the ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, the erosion of fundamental freedoms in Hong Kong, persistent human rights abuses in Tibet, and transnational repression around the world,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Friday.

“We call on the PRC to abide by the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and to accept the many recommendations made this year during the Universal Periodic Review of its human rights record, including unconditionally releasing PRC nationals it has arbitrarily and unjustly detained,” he said.

Morning news brief: Biden drops another gaffe; Musk donates to Trump; and more

Media reports citing sources said several significant Democratic donors have informed Future Forward, the biggest super PAC of supporters of the United States President Joe Biden that pledges totalling about $90 million are now on hold if the incumbent remains the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

According to a New York Times report, some eight-figure pledges are among the frozen funds. This comes after Biden's poor debate performance against his rival and predecessor Donald Trump.

A group donor shared that Future Forward had approached them and their friends several times since the debate, asking for money, but they had been “holding off.”

The two people briefed on the frozen pledges declined to say which individual donors were pulling back promised checks, which were estimated to total around or above $90 million.

A second source close to the group told the NYT that the super PAC has been delaying big strategic choices until it has a clear idea of who would be at the top of the ticket.

The financial freeze coincides with the conversation among some of Biden's advisors about how to convince the president to withdraw from the race.

According to reports, Biden's campaign has been quietly testing Vice President Kamala Harris' chances against Trump. The number of congressional Democrats urging the incumbent president to stand down is rising.

The possible shortage of super PAC funds also coincides with the campaign preparing for a challenging July fundraising period, as key donors question Biden's chances of winning in November.

Future Forward, designated by Biden's campaign as its primary super PAC for the 2024 race, has already reserved $250 million in TV and digital ads starting after the Democratic National Convention (DNC) next month.

Following the debate, a leaked poll from an organisation closely associated with Future Forward revealed that the super PAC had evaluated the likability of potential Biden alternatives, including Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

President Biden has had a worse overall favorability rating than all the others, according to the poll.

Scrutiny around Joe Biden's cognitive decline increased further as the US president mistakenly referred to his Ukrainian counterpart, President Volodymyr Zelensky as "President Putin" before correcting himself at the NATO Summit in Washington on Thursday (Jul 11). Biden was about to hand over the mic to Zelensky when he made the gaffe, surrounded by NATO leaders, but quickly corrected himself in the following sentence. "And now I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination, ladies and gentlemen, President Putin,” Biden said. “Going to beat President Putin, President Zelensky. I am so focused on beating Putin,” he said as a number of European leaders clapped hesitantly, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Meanwhile, Zelensky responded to Biden’s comments by stating: “I am better (than Putin).” ⚡️Joe Biden has just introduced Vladimir Zelensky as Putin at the NATO conference pic.twitter.com/61mKMzanet — Russian Market (@runews) July 11, 2024 × Also read | White House rubbishes President Biden Parkinson's speculations, refuses to elaborate on mystery doctor visits Another howler by Biden Later during his highly-anticipated solo press conference in Washington, Biden made another gaffe by mistakenly referring to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump”. “Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president [if] I think she’s not qualified to be president,” Biden said, confusing his trusted ally with former President Donald Trump. Later in the same presser, Biden was quizzed about the mix-up and that his cognitive decline had become more noticeable - damaging America's standing in the world. To which Biden laughed off the question initially before responding: "Do you see any damage we’re seeing in my Leaders Conference? Have you seen a more successful conference? What do you think? And the most important piece I was talking about Putin?” But he also referred to his military commanders as his “commander in chief.” Watch | US Elections 2024: Make-or-Break moment for fate of Biden's reelection bid × Questions have been raised on Biden's mental and physical capability to stay at the job for a long time. A new poll conducted by ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos has revealed that two-thirds of Americans want United States President Joe Biden to step aside as Democrat nominee for the upcoming presidential race.

A new poll conducted by ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos has revealed that two-thirds of Americans want United States President Joe Biden to step aside as Democrat nominee for the upcoming presidential race. The majority of Biden's own supporters carry the same belief and want him to spare the party blushes as his rival Donald Trump goes for the kill in the coming days. As many as 67 per cent of the respondents want the incumbent president to drop from the race, while 85 per cent believe that the Democrat leader is too old for a second term. The only silver lining for Biden, 81, is that if elections were held today, 46 per cent prefer him, compared to 47 per cent who want Trump. Questions have been raised on Biden's mental and physical capability to stay at the job for a long time. However, it all unravelled for the Democrat when he rambled, mumbled, stuttered and appeared to zone out during several segments of the presidential debate last month. Since the debate, worrying Democrats have cast aspersions over Biden's ability to go toe-to-toe with Trump. The usually favourable liberal media outlets have also furnished numerous op-eds, suggesting the US president should call it quits and pass the baton to another candidate. This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and congress member and governor that I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly,” Clooney added. Biden has maintained a strong interest in Brexit, consistently cautioning that peace in Northern Ireland must not be endangered by complications arising from the UK's decision to leave the EU.

Notably, the UK PM has used the NATO summit to emphasise the UK’s commitment to the alliance, as well as to Ukraine, assuring that he will stick with plans to spend at least £3bn ($35,913,257.56 USD) every year on military support to Kyiv for “as long as is it takes” in its conflict with Russia.

Starmer is also trying to build relationships with European leaders as he tries to seal an EU-UK security pact.

“The relationship is special and important. It’s forged in difficult circumstances, endured for so long, and stronger now than ever,” the UK PM said and added, “I’m very contented to be able to come so early in government to recommit to NATO, to recommit to the special relationship.”

Biden-Starmer meet

At the beginning of their talks, Biden was asked by reporters about George Clooney's article in the New York Times, which suggested that Biden should step down as the Democratic presidential candidate. The president simply shrugged in response.

When asked by reporters if “football is coming home”? “It looks like it,” Starmer replied.

UK PM told the US President, “I began to watch the game with the Netherlands prime minister, but we left at 1-1.”

Biden threw his head back and laughed, revealing a glistening set of teeth. “And you guys are still talking to one another?” he joked.

Earlier, the prime minister, an avid football fan, presented the president with an Arsenal shirt featuring the name "Biden" and the number 46 on the back—a nod to his position as the 46th US president.

“It’s [Starmer’s] team and [he] thought it would make a personal gift,” a senior No 10 official said.

Starmer has earlier given the French President Emmanuel Macron an Arsenal t-shirt as a gift.

He also gave Biden a framed copy of the original Atlantic charter that led to the formation of NATO, with then Labour prime minister Clement Attlee’s amendments.

After the talks, the Bidens were hosting Starmer, who has been accompanied by his wife, Victoria, to Washington, and other Nato leaders and their partners at a glitzy White House dinner.

UK should strengthen ties with EU: Biden to Starmer

George Clooney may have been a Democratic party loyalist for years, but he is convinced that the incumbent United States President Joe Biden 'cannot win' the presidential election in November. Clooney has urged the Democrats to look for a new candidate in a bombshell op-ed he has written for the New York Times which was published on Wednesday (Jul 10). The Oscar-winning actor-filmmaker has said that Biden is no longer the same person he once was.

In his guest piece, the 63-year-old revealed how he has been one of the biggest fundraisers for the Democratic party. “I have led some of the biggest fund-raisers in my party’s history. Barack Obama in 2012. Hillary Clinton in 2016. Joe Biden in 2020. Last month I co-hosted the single largest fund-raiser supporting any Democratic candidate ever, for President Biden’s re-election.”

The actor clarified that he mentioned his involvement in fundraisers to highlight the gravity of the situation and his dedication to the party.

“I say all of this only to express how much I believe in this process and how profound I think this moment is,” he wrote. Calling himself a “lifelong Democrat,” Clooney admitted that Biden, 81, should not seek reelection.

“I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend, and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years, he’s won many of the battles he’s faced,” Clooney wrote.

It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe 'big F-ing deal' Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate,” he added.

Clooney blamed Biden's age for the change. “This is about age. Nothing more.”

“But also nothing that can be reversed. We are not going to win in November with this president.” The actor also added that it was not only his opinion but the opinion of every Democrat.

“On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate. This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and congress member and governor that I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly,” Clooney wrote.

US: House Democrats air concerns about Biden's future, seven Democrats ask Biden to step aside

Donald Trump has challenged Joe Biden to another presidential debate and an 18-hole golf match, vowing to donate to charity if he loses the game.

"I'm also officially challenging crooked Joe to an 18-hole golf match right here on Doral's Blue Monster… It will be among the most-watched sporting events in history. Maybe bigger than the Ryder Cup or even the Masters," Trump said in Florida.

He vowed to donate $1 million to charity if he loses the golf match.

"And if he wins, I will give the charity of his choice, any charity of his choice, $1 million. And I'll bet you he doesn't take the offer," he said.

"Did you ever see him swing?," the presumptive Republican presidential nominee asked supporters in a campaign speech.

The Biden campaign responded by saying the US president "doesn’t have time for Donald Trump’s weird antics–he’s busy leading America and defending the free world. Donald Trump is a liar, a convict, and a fraud only out for himself–par for the course."

"We’d challenge Donald Trump to create jobs, but he lost 3 million. We’d challenge Donald Trump to stand up to Putin, but he bent the knee to him. We’d challenge Donald Trump to follow the law, but he breaks it. We’d challenge Donald Trump to not destroy our country, but that’s all his Project 2025 aims to do", said Biden campaign spokesperson James Singer.

Seventh Democrat seeks Biden's exit from race

In the wake of a disastrous performance at the June 27 presidential debate, Biden faced calls to step aside, from his own Democratic Party, media, and donors. But in a stern letter to the party, he said he's staying in the race and asked for the "drama to end".

Trump's comments came even as a seventh House Democrat asked Biden to leave the race.

Mikie Sherrill issued a statement on Tuesday (July 9) seeking Biden's exit.

"Because I know President Biden cares deeply about the future of our country, I am asking that he declare that he won’t run for reelection and will help lead us through a process toward a new nominee," said the Representative from New Jersey.

Biden showing signs of neurodegeneration?

There have been reports in the past days that a neurologist with specialisation in Parkinson's disease had visited the White House eight times in the past eight months.

A separate neurologist, speaking to NBC News, said Biden has signs of 'neurodegeneration.'

“I could have diagnosed him from across the mall,” said Dr. Tom Pitts, who claimed Biden had “classic features of neurodegeneration”.

Trump challenges Biden to 18-hole golf match, second debate: 'Will donate to charity if...'

Russia prefers Donald Trump as the new President of the United States, revealed a US intelligence officer while briefing reporters on Tuesday (July 9).

US Elections 2024 are the contest that decides which leader Americans prefer, so why does Russia's preference matter?

Russia's preference and the US Elections

In the US elections, the public will decide whether Democrat presumptive candidate and current US President Joe Biden will once again take the helm of the Western power or whether his rival Republican presumptive candidate Trump will take over.

However, Russia can influence the decision in favour of one candidate or the other, thus impeding fair elections.

Russia and US elections: Historical context

As per the Reuters news agency, historically, US intelligence assessments have indicated that Moscow attempted to influence the elections in favour of Trump in both 2016 against Hillary Clinton and 2020 against Joe Biden.

Talking to the press, the official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) reiterated that these assessments remain unchanged.

Why does Russia prefer Trump?

Russia's favour for Trump largely has to do with the US's role in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.

"We have not observed a shift in Russia's preferences for the presidential race from past elections, given the role the US is playing with regard to Ukraine and broader policy toward Russia," said the official.

Trump has in recent days criticised the extent of US military support for Ukraine — totalling around $60 billion since Russia's invasion in 2022 — and referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as "the greatest salesman ever."

Furthermore, Trump's national security advisers have suggested ending US military aid to Ukraine unless it engages in peace talks with Russia.

On NATO, the ex-president plans to "encourage" Russia to do "whatever the hell they want" against alliance members not meeting defence spending targets. This is in direct contradiction to NATO's collective defence obligations.

Conducting the briefing with anonymity, officials from ODNI, FBI, and National Coordinator for Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience officials, highlighted the difference between election influence (shaping poll outcomes or undermining democratic processes) and interference (disrupting the ability to hold a free and fair vote).

Currently, the US has not found evidence of plans by any country to disrupt the upcoming November elections, they said.

However, the official revealed that Russia has begun efforts to influence specific voter groups in battleground states, promoting divisive narratives and denigrating particular politicians. These efforts, primarily conducted through social media and using US voices, aim to shape the presidential, congressional, and public opinion.

Is China looking to influence US elections?

As per the report, unlike Russia, China is not actively planning to influence the presidential race, although it seeks to expand its capability to collect and monitor data from social media "probably to better understand and eventually manipulate public opinion," said the official.
