BREAKING: Biden tells ally that he might not be able to salvage his candidacy, says report

Is President Joe Biden a winnable candidate for the Democrats in the 2024 Presidential Elections? That is the question American voters are asking after his performance in last week's Presidential debate with Republican rival Donald Trump. Latest surveys show how support for Biden is on the decline, raising alarm bells within his party. With one of his party's lawmakers demanding he step aside.

Gravitas: Can Biden wing it for the Democratic party?

<p>Vice President Kamala Harris, an Indian-American politician, is among the names who can replace President Joe Biden as a candidate for Democrats for the 2024 presidential election amid concerns over the president's age and health.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some Democrats have openly questioned whether or not Biden should be replaced as a candidate in this year's election, especially after his shaky performance in the debate with former president Donald Trump on June 27.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similar chatter has been going on among voters, with some discussing it on social media forums. In fact, at a daily White House briefing on Tuesday (Jul 2), a reporter asked the press secretary a direct question about Biden's cognitive state.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Besides Harris, other potential replacements include&nbsp;California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. But the process won't be easy.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>How Biden can be replaced?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>When it comes to replacement, there is still time to make a change as Biden will not be nominated officially until later this summer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by the news agency Reuters, Elaine Kamarck, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution think tank, a Democratic National Committee (DNC) member, and author of the book "Primary Politics" about the presidential nominating process, said, "Biden could decide himself to step aside before he is nominated; he could be challenged by others who try to win over the delegates he has accrued; or he could withdraw after the Democratic convention in Chicago in August, leaving the Democratic National Committee to elect someone to run against Trump in his place."&nbsp;</p>

<p>If Biden "releases" his delegates by stepping aside, there could be a competition among other Democratic candidates to become the nominee.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per a recent CNN poll, Harris has emerged as a stronger contender with a better chance of retaining the White House against Trump in the elections as compared to Biden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Harris said Tuesday she was "proud" to be Biden's running mate, but amid the president's worsening health, her chances to secure the Oval Office for the next five years in the White House have gained remarkable credence. However, it's not just Harris but also Whitmer's potential elevation from Michigan governor's office to Washington's corridors of power is set to dominate the American presidential election's discourse, if Biden stands down. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Pelosi said that it was valid for people to question whether Biden's difficulties on the debate stage were a onetime issue or indicative of a larger problem.</p>

<p>"I think it's a legitimate question to say: Is this an episode, or is this a condition? And so when people ask that question, it's completely legitimate — of both candidates," said Pelosi during an interview on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports".</p>

<p>"Both candidates owe whatever test you want to put them to, in terms of their mental acuity and their health — both of them," she added.</p>

<p>Pelosi emphasised her confidence in Biden's ability to "continue to be a great President of the United States," but said he needs for him to demonstrate his capabilities in unscripted settings. She recommended that Biden participate in multiple interviews with serious journalists to address any question and "just sit there and be Joe."</p>

<p>Pelosi also noted mixed reactions from elected Democrats about Biden's continuation in the race.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Later, when asked for further clarification, Pelosi's spokesperson, Ian Krager, said she "has full confidence in President Biden and looks forward to attending his inauguration on January 20, 2025."</p>

<h2>How do Democrats feel about Biden's alleged health issues?</h2>

<p>According to Pelosi, many Democrats express unwavering support and say "Joe's our guy. We love him; we trust him. He has vision, knowledge, judgment, and integrity. The other guy has none of the above."</p>

<p>However, others are not so happy about him being the presumptive Democratic Party presidential candidate. On Tuesday, Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas became the first Democrat to call for Biden to exit the race.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Talking to CNN on Tuesday (July 2) Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill., another Democrat said that while it is Biden's decision, they must honestly acknowledge his performance issues. "We have to be honest with ourselves that it wasn't just a horrible night".</p>

<h2><strong>White House races to quash questions about Biden's capability</strong></h2>

<p>White House press secretary Jean-Pierre in a statement on Tuesday stressed that the administration has been transparent about Biden's health.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have put forward a thorough, transparent annual report on his health, so they have said it (a cognitive test) is not warranted, it is not necessary," she said.</p>

<p>When asked about whether the octogenarian underwent a neurological scan or saw a doctor after the debate, she said that people need to "take a step back," and that Biden just had a "bad night."</p>

<p>"We understand. We're not taking away from what you all saw or what the American people saw. We understand it was a bad night," said Jean-Pierre.</p>

<p>A day after the debate, Biden acknowledged during a campaign event on Friday that he has aged and doesn't debate as well as he used to but insisted that he remains capable of handling the job. This narrative was reiterated in a new campaign ad his re-election campaign team released on Monday (July 1).</p>

<p>The White House last released Biden's health information in February 2024 after the President underwent a routine physical exam.</p>

<p>Then, Jean-Pierre rejected suggestions that Biden should take a cognitive test and said that he "passes a cognitive test every day" as he "moves from one topic to another topic, understanding the granular level of these topics."</p>

<h2><strong>Isn't Trump just three years younger than Biden?</strong></h2>

<p>Former President Donald Trump, 78 — only three years younger than Biden — has also faced similar scrutiny regarding his mental fitness, particularly after confusing Pelosi with former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley earlier this year. Some business executives who last month met with Trump described him as "remarkably meandering" and unable to "keep a straight thought".</p>

<p>A letter from his doctor that Trump released in November 2023 described his health as "excellent". However, the letter lacked specific details on vitals or test results.</p>

Jill Biden's ex-husband wonders why is she still supporting Joe Biden for White House

<p>Hours after his disappointing performance in the United States presidential election debate, President Joe Biden slammed those who criticised his age.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In his fiery speech, he vowed to his supporters that he would win re-election in November amid rising concerns over his candidature among the Democrats.</p>

<p>"I know I'm not a young man, to state the obvious," Biden, said during a rally in North Carolina on Friday (June 28), a day after he struggled to debate with his Republican rival Donald Trump.</p>

<p>"I don’t walk as easy as I used to... I don’t debate as well as I used to," he conceded. "But I know what I do know, I know how to tell the truth [and] I know how to do this job," he said.</p>

<p>“I know how to do this job. I know how to get things done. I know what millions of Americans know: When you get knocked down, you get back up,” Biden said.</p>

<p>The 81-year-old president said that “as a Biden that I wouldn’t run again if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul I could do this job", amid the crowd chanting “four more years” and “Yes you can!” in Raleigh.</p>

<p>Biden, repeating a line from the presidential debate, said, “I spent 90 minutes on a stage debating a guy who has the morals of an alley cat. I think he [Trump] set a new record for the number of lies told at a single debate.”</p>

<p>Speaking at a rally in Virginia, Trump hailed his "big victory" in the debate and called Biden 'grossly incompetent'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Did anybody last night watch a thing last night called a debate? That was a big one. But as you saw on television last night, we had a big victory against a man that is really looking to destroy our country,” said Trump.</p>

<p>“Despite the fact that crooked Joe Biden spent the entire week at Camp David resting, working, studying; he studied very hard, he studied so hard that he didn’t know what the hell he was doing," he added.</p>

<p>“Joe Biden’s problem is not his age; it’s not his anything really, he’s got no problem other than it’s his competence, he’s grossly incompetent. You know, they keep saying old, I know people that are much older than him that are doing unbelievable things,” the former president said.</p>

<p>“But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit. Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November,” he added.</p>

<p>The New York Times Editorial Board&nbsp;has appealed to Biden to quit the race for the White House and make way for a more competent Democrat leader.</p>

He struggled to respond to Mr. Trump’s provocations. He struggled to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his lies, his failures and his chilling plans. More than once, he struggled to make it to the end of a sentence,” wrote the Board.</p>

<p>“The greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election,” the Board said.</p>

<p>The Board stated there are Democratic leaders who can be “compelling and energetic” opponents to Trump.</p>

In his fiery speech, he vowed to his supporters that he would win re-election in November amid rising concerns over his candidature among the Democrats. "I know I'm not a young man, to state the obvious," Biden, said during a rally in North Carolina on Friday (June 28), a day after he struggled to debate with his Republican rival Donald Trump. "I don’t walk as easy as I used to... I don’t debate as well as I used to," he conceded. "But I know what I do know, I know how to tell the truth [and] I know how to do this job," he said. “I know how to do this job. I know how to get things done. I know what millions of Americans know: When you get knocked down, you get back up,” Biden said. Also Read: US presidential debate: Trump won but how badly did Biden lose? The 81-year-old president said that “as a Biden that I wouldn’t run again if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul I could do this job", amid the crowd chanting “four more years” and “Yes you can!” in Raleigh. Biden, repeating a line from the presidential debate, said, “I spent 90 minutes on a stage debating a guy who has the morals of an alley cat. I think he [Trump] set a new record for the number of lies told at a single debate.” Trump calls Biden 'grossly incompetent', hails his 'big victory' in debate Speaking at a rally in Virginia, Trump hailed his "big victory" in the debate and called Biden 'grossly incompetent'. “Did anybody last night watch a thing last night called a debate? That was a big one. But as you saw on television last night, we had a big victory against a man that is really looking to destroy our country,” said Trump. “Despite the fact that crooked Joe Biden spent the entire week at Camp David resting, working, studying; he studied very hard, he studied so hard that he didn’t know what the hell he was doing," he added. “Joe Biden’s problem is not his age; it’s not his anything really, he’s got no problem other than it’s his competence, he’s grossly incompetent. You know, they keep saying old, I know people that are much older than him that are doing unbelievable things,” the former president said. Barack Obama weighs on Biden's performance, says 'bad debate nights happen' Former president Barack Obama also weighed in on Biden’s debate performance. Taking to X, Obama said, “Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know." Watch: Gravitas | Will Biden be replaced as presidential candidate? Democrats secretly mull options “But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit. Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November,” he added. New York Times Editorial Board asks Biden to quit the race The New York Times Editorial Board has appealed to Biden to quit the race for the White House and make way for a more competent Democrat leader. “The president appeared on Thursday night as the shadow of a great public servant. He struggled to explain what he would accomplish in a second term. He struggled to respond to Mr. Trump’s provocations. He struggled to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his lies, his failures and his chilling plans. More than once, he struggled to make it to the end of a sentence,” wrote the Board. “The greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for re-election,” the Board said. The Board stated there are Democratic leaders who can be “compelling and energetic” opponents to Trump. (With inputs from agencies)
