Gasso, also known as the Strawberry Village of Kashmir Valley, is located on the outskirts of Srinagar and the families here are busy harvesting strawberries, as it's the first produce of the season in Kashmir region.

But due to the harsh weather conditions and climate change, the crop has been affected badly.

Every family of the Gasso area is involved in strawberry farming.

Men and women gather at the break of dawn in their fields to pick strawberries as their shelf life is short.

Many farmers at Gasso village in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar say the crop has been hit due to untimely rainfall this year and has resulted in less overall production.

''This place is called Gasso and is famous as the Strawberry Valley of Kashmir, Every household of this area is involved in Strawberry farming in the area. This year due to erratic weather conditions, we have had the crop hit badly.

"We had a lot of blossoms earlier but due to intense rains, it all got damaged, so the crop was affected. We really need help from the government to tell us what to do to save our crops. We grow everything naturally with organic fertilizer and due to the weather, our harvest has been affected badly,'' said Daniyal Shafi Mir, a strawberry farmer.

Strawberry farming was introduced in Kashmir not too long ago, and given its favourable weather conditions, it has generated employment for locals in the valley.

Tonnes of Strawberry are being produced by the farmers in the valley but this time, the weather has affected production.

The farmers have also been long demanding the cold storage facility for the produce as it has a very short shelf life.

And once the farmers harvest the produce, they have to pack it the same day and send it to the market. The farmers say if they are provided cold storage, they can send these strawberries even to outside UT.

''I want to appeal to the horticulture department that the way they have increased the cold storage facilities for apple growers in south Kashmir has helped, and in comparison, with apples strawberries have no facilities. The strawberries grown in Srinagar don't have a single cold storage facility available, If the shelf life of the fruit is one week, how will this sustain?

"It even rots in normal temperature within a day and I request the government to create a cold storage facility for the strawberry growers in Srinagar. The whole village harvests the strawberry together and imagine it can't be taken together to market and keeping it at home without proper storage rots the fruit and leads to a lot of losses,'' said Aamir Manzoor, a farming expert.

In the last few years, more people have started converting their land into strawberry farms as it's a very profitable crop.

With Lok Sabha elections just around the corner, the Indian government is leaving no stone unturned to eradicate separatism from the Kashmir Valley. In the last five years, over 10 separatist outfits in Jammu and Kashmir have been banned by the Home Ministry, five among them just in the last week.

The Union home ministry has acted upon multiple separatist groups and declared them unlawful associations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967. The five banned groups include separatist groups JKLF, JKFM, and the Muslim League. These groups led by separatist leaders like Yasin Malik, Nayim Khan and Masrat Aalam were banned in the past few days alone, while five other separatist groups were banned over the past five years.

''We welcome this step by the government, It's a great step to ban terrorists and separatist organisations in the Union Territory. They had put Kashmir on a burner, and it was due to these organisations that youth were involved in stone pelting, and terrorism in the name of Pakistan. Since the step of banning these organisations has been taken by our Home Minister and the vision he has for JK, the situation has improved drastically by banning these organizations like Jamaat Islami, Muslim League and Geelani's faction. There is peace, progress and development as the output of the same. They were producing terrorists and stone pelters and that has stopped," said Altaf Thakur, BJP spokesperson.

Meanwhile, in a significant move, the daughter of jailed separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah and granddaughter of separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani publicly distanced themselves from the separatist ideologies that their father and grandfather once championed. Sama Shabir and Ruwa Shah have taken a bold step towards reaffirming their allegiance to the Union of India.

Ruwa Shah, the granddaughter of Geelani, disassociated herself from her late grandfather's Hurriyat Conference faction through a published notice in a local newspaper in the valley. She made it clear that she stands as a proud citizen of India and holds no sympathy towards separatist ideologies. Similarly, Sama Shabir, the elder daughter of Shabir Ahmad Shah, emphasised her loyalty to India in another public notice, denouncing any association with her father's banned separatist organisation.

''The granddaughter of Syed Ali Geelani and daughter of Shabir Ahmad Shah, both have distanced themselves from the separatist ideology. They have said that their parents and grandparents had the wrong ideology, and they are proud to be citizens of India. It's a big slap on the face of separatists and also on the regional political parties like National Conference and PDP, who keep talking about talks with Pakistan, it is also a slap on them. Both these daughters coming out and accepting India's ideology and being proud of it is a big achievement,'' said Altaf Thakur, BJP Spokesperson.

Official sources have indicated that in preparation for the Lok Sabha polls and to ensure a peaceful atmosphere in the Valley for the common populace to participate freely and fairly in the democratic process, central agencies and the MHA have been keeping a close eye on Jammu and Kashmir.

Ajay Bisaria, the Former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan, has underscored the gravity of the February 2019 developments when it comes to India-Pakistan ties, stating, "there was a distinct probability that India would escalate the situation if Pakistan had not returned the captured Indian pilot or if he had come to harm. That was certainly a point which was clearly made by India." Following the Pulwama terror attack in 2019, India conducted surgical strikes on Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camps near Balakot, leading to a dogfight between Indian and Pakistani air forces and the subsequent capture and later release of Indian IAF Pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman by Pakistan.
