<p>In total, CaratLane has about 1,500 employees, the most of whom work in the manufacturing and retail segments, and do not hold stock in the company. Instead, they receive bonuses and promotions.</p>

<p>About 400 workers make up the startup’s corporate team, where providing ESOPs was a more common practice. 75 of the 400 employees own shares in CaratLane, which are currently valued between Rs 340 and Rs 380 crore, or roughly 1.72 per cent of the company.</p>

<p>Employees at CaratLane will have their shares purchased by Titan, which plans to acquire a 100 per cent stake in the enterprise. It has been raising its investment already. Titan now owns 71.09 per cent of CaratLane and is getting ready to pay Rs 4,621 crore to acquire the remaining 27.18 per cent from the company’s founder and CEO, Mithun Sanchetti and his family. This will bring Titan’s total ownership in the jewellery firm to 98.28 percent. The acquisition is expected to be complete by October 31, 2023, following regulatory approvals.</p>

<p>For Titan to acquire complete ownership of CaratLane, just the ESOP pool will be remaining.</p>

<p>“The ESOP component (of 1.72 percent in the company) will also be bought out at the same time by the end of October. A bunch of it will be done by then and whatever remains, Titan will buy as and when the vesting happens,” Moneycontrol quoted Sanchetti as saying.</p>

Stylish, armed robbers storm luxury watch shop, steal over $16 million in Paris heist

<p>Recently released bodycam footage has shed light on the aftermath of a major jewellery heist in Lebec, California. The jewellery heist as per a BBC report could be valued at $100 million, that could mean that the theft could be the most expensive jewellery heist in US history.</p>

<h2><strong>What happened a year ago</strong></h2>

<p>Almost a year ago, in 2022, two security guards made a stop at a Flying J convenience store while transporting jewellery worth millions from a show in San Mateo to Pasadena.</p>

<p>As per LA Times, in the early hours of July 11, 2022, sheriff's deputies responding to a vehicle burglary arrived at the Flying J Travel Center in Lebec, California.</p>

<p>There they discovered was a bold late-night heist that had just taken place—a Brink's tractor-trailer carrying millions of dollars worth of jewellery, watches, gems, and other items from a trade show had been breached.</p>

<p>The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies, Jeremy Viger and David Swigart, engaged in a conversation with the Brink's drivers, capturing the interaction on their body cameras. The footage, recently obtained by The Times, provides new insights into the aftermath of the crime, which affected 14 jewellers whose merchandise was on display at the International Gem and Jewellery Show.</p>

<h2><strong>What does the newly unveiled footage show?</strong></h2>

<p>The deputies, as per the LA Times report, arrived at around 4 am, finding the truck stop filled with parked big rigs. They approached the drivers cautiously, aware that the thieves might still be in the vicinity.</p>

<p>"We are gonna post up here because you never know — they could still be lurking," says one deputy Viger.</p>

<p>The body camera footage, recorded from different angles, reveals a conversation that lasted approximately 45 minutes.</p>

<p>During the recorded conversation, Tandy Motley, one of the truck crew, mentions that he had been watched by a man at the jewellery show.</p>

<p>"I’m pretty sure we were followed from the show where we got loaded," adds Motley.</p>

<p>Another revelation is the estimate cost of the heist.</p>

<p>The drivers discussed the value of the stolen merchandise, initially estimating it at $2.7 million. However, Brink's later stated in a legal filing that the stolen shipments were worth more than three times that amount. The conflicting valuations have led to lawsuits between Brink's and the jewellers involved.</p>

<h2><strong>The lawsuit</strong></h2>

<p>The heist has sparked a lawsuit filed by 14 jewellers against Brinks, the company responsible for the transportation of the precious jewels.</p>

<p>The value of the stolen jewellery is the subject of duelling lawsuits. One lawsuit was filed by Brink's against the jewellers whose merchandise was pilfered, and a counter-lawsuit filed by the jewellers against Brink's and other parties.</p>

<p>While Brink's has sought to limit the payout to the jewellers at $8.7 million, Attorney Jerry Kroll, representing the jewellers, puts the estimated value of the stolen jewellery at around $100 million.</p>

<p>However, Brink's says that the $8.7 million payout appropriately reflects the value declared by the merchants on shipping manifests.</p>

<p>Brinks as per a CBS news report stated that the jewellers had undervalued their goods, which impacted the security measures implemented during transportation. The company claims that if the jewellers had accurately declared the value of their goods, appropriate security measures would have been taken, and they would have compensated the customers accordingly.</p>

'Seductress' roofies date, steals jewellery, diamond-studded Rolex watch worth thousands of dollars

<p>Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has reportedly handed over to the Brazilian authorities some expensive jewellery he had received from the Saudi Arabia government during his tenure. AFP reports that the 68-year-old far-right leader has been embroiled in a scandal over allegations that he brought these jewels into Brazil illegally. As per a Reuters report, the politician on Wednesday was ordered by Brazil's federal audit court (TCU) to deliver within five days a second set of jewellery he received from the Saudi government, the first one first set of jewellery had been seized by customs officials in 2021.</p>

<p>Brazilian woman Sabine Coll Boghici, 48, was arrested on Wednesday on allegations she was part of a bizarre scheme to defraud her 82-year-old mother, Genevieve Boghici, the wife of the late art collector Jean Boghici, out of money, artwork, and jewelry totaling some 724 million reais ($142.42 million).</p>

<p>Her arrest has exposed a disturbing web of fraud that police say lasted years and involved alleged psychics to swindle artwork by some of&nbsp;Brazil's most emblematic painters. Four other people were also arrested and two others, Diana Rosa Aparecida Stanesco Vuletic and Slavko Vuletic, are on the run.</p>

<p>The scam began in 2020 when Genevieve was approached by a supposed psychic with prophecies of her daughter's imminent death.</p>

<p>The victim was then taken to several more psychics who police say used personal information provided by her daughter to scam her distraught mother into transferring money to pay for "spiritual treatment."</p>

<p>In the months that followed, police allege the suspects physically threatened Genevieve and that she was kept at home for months by her daughter.</p>

<p>Sabine and an accomplice posing as a psychic "began to take the artwork from the (mother's) house, claiming that the painting was cursed with something negative, with negative energy that needed to be prayed over," said Rio de Janeiro police officer Gilberto Ribeiro.</p>

<p>After almost a year of being mistreated by Sabine and her accomplices, the victim decided to go to the police.</p>

<p>Police say 16 paintings were stolen, including works by renowned&nbsp;Brazilian artists like Cicero Dias, Rubens Gerchman, and Alberto Guignard.</p>

<p>Three pieces from iconic modernist painter Tarsila do Amaral - O Sono, Sol Poente and Pont Neuf – were also stolen, which together police appraised at a value of 700 million reais ($137.69 million).</p>

<p>Authorities have also recovered three paintings in Sao Paulo. Two were sold to a museum in Buenos Aires but have not yet been recovered.</p>

<p>Police say seven people are suspected of involvement in the years-long crime, facing charges of embezzlement, robbery, extortion, false imprisonment and criminal association.</p>

<p>Gold bars from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and jewellery from India, are two key items that are getting significant duty cuts under the India-UAE Free trade agreement, which was signed amid much fanfare in Delhi on Friday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Commerce Secretary B V R Subrahmanyam speaking to a group of reporters on Saturday said, "We are a major importer of gold. India imports 800 tons of gold every year. To UAE, we have given Tariff rate quota (TRQ) of 200 tons, with tariff in perpetuity will be one per cent less, than whatever is the tariff charged to the rest of the world".&nbsp;</p>

<p>This gives UAE 1 per cent price advantage in gold bars, which gives the west Asian country an upper hand in gold trade with India.</p>

<p>On India's side, the big gain is that Indian jewellery gets zero duty access to the UAE market. UAE currently has a 5 per cent duty on Indian jewellery which will be done away with when the FTA comes into implementation in the first week of May.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Overall, the gems and jewellery sector will get an edge with international jewellery operations, which is expected to shift to India from Singapore and Hong Kong.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Secretary Subrahmanyam explained, "UAE becomes a very big entry point for us to enter into rest of the world, Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. The jewellery sector is gung ho".&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is India's first comprehensive trade agreement in a decade and under the deal, duty gets eliminated on 80 per cent of tariff lines.</p>

<p>UAE Economy Minister Abdulla bin Touq Al-Marri in response to WION's question after the signing of the pact said, "Everyone is on reform part for the economy given that we have gone through pandemic that has hit the world...this agreement comes at an early stage of the year, it really gives recovery for the economy"</p>

<p>Substantial net gains for India have particularly been in labour-intensive industries - gems and jewellery, textiles, leather, footwear, sports goods, plastics, furniture, agricultural and wood products, engineering products, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and automobiles. Indian exporters will gain market access in the UAE but also provide wider access to the much larger Arab and African markets.</p>

<p>Highlighting how the pact opens markets for Indian goods, Indian trade minister Piyush Goyal said, "UAE, over the year, has built a reputation of a trading hub on which people have the faith that it works seamlessly, very smoothly and created the strong backbone of financial systems, port system, logistics chain and deepening of exports will certainly help us gain access to other countries".</p>

<p>Interestingly, a separate annexe on pharmaceuticals has been incorporated to facilitate access to Indian pharmaceutical products by giving them regulatory approval in 90 days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ​signing of FTA comes when India is celebrating 75 years of Independence &amp; UAE is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its foundation.</p>
