US President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei came under growing pressure on Friday to clarify their countries' involvement in helping Brazilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro leave Brazil after authorities cancelled his passports. The 45-year-old senator fled Brazil two days after losing Sunday's presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro had been instructed to surrender all his passports amid an ongoing investigation into suspected money-laundering. However, he managed to leave the country through a covert operation involving Argentina and Ecuador before arriving in Florida on Wednesday, where he declared himself the rightful ‘leader’ of Brazil. Bolsonaro refused to accept defeat after the election, a result that came as a surprise after he had won the first round and was considered a narrow favourite. According to Argentina's migration authority, Bolsonaro boarded a private aircraft on Tuesday evening in the northeastern city of Puerto Iguazu, around 40 minutes after entering Argentina by land. Although his Brazilian and diplomatic passports had been cancelled, Bolsonaro also holds an Italian passport, which he reportedly used to board the private jet in Argentina, according to a flight document reviewed by AFP. A Brazilian diplomatic source, speaking anonymously, told AFP that Argentina's diplomatic representative had been called to a ‘routine meeting’ on Thursday to provide explanations about the incident. Brazil had recalled its ambassador and downgraded diplomatic relations with Buenos Aires in August following repeated insults from Milei, who had described Lula as a thief and corrupt. However, Argentina's Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno denied on Friday that Brazil had requested an explanation from Buenos Aires regarding Bolsonaro's departure. "FALSE.
Outliers in not accepting result
In his first statement after leaving Brazil, Bolsonaro thanked Milei and Trump for their support. Milei has refused to recognise Lula's election victory, while Trump described the election as a ‘disgrace’ and ‘very strange’. However, Lula's victory has been recognised by world leaders across the political spectrum, Brazil's electoral court, Bolsonaro's own party, which holds a majority in Congress, and other right-wing allies. In the United States, Democratic lawmakers sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio requesting an immediate accounting of the State Department's role in facilitating Bolsonaro's departure from Brazil. Luis Grande, head of Baires Fly, the airline that transported Bolsonaro, told AFP on Thursday that he had been hired by a broker who lives in the United States. Several US media outlets, including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, have reported that the private aircraft was chartered by Jason Miller, an adviser to Trump. The White House has not issued any comment on the matter.
Difficult times for the Bolsonaro movement
Bolsonaro, the son of former far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro, has faced isolation and ridicule in Brazil following his departure and declaration that he intends to lead the opposition from abroad. Attention has quickly shifted to who will take charge of the political right in Flavio's absence and what lies ahead for the Bolsonaro movement. Jair Bolsonaro, 71, is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest for plotting a coup against Lula following his 2022 election defeat. His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, who was recently elected senator, issued a statement on Instagram on Friday referring to Jair Bolsonaro as ‘our leader’. "We are living through difficult times. We need to reflect and only then act," she wrote. "My husband stresses that this is a time for unity, not for looking for people to blame," she said.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 final between Argentina and Spain is being viewed as more than just a football showdown. While both teams compete for the biggest prize in football, the final has also drawn political attention due to the contrasting positions of both nations on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Argentina’s President Javier Milei has strengthened ties with Israel and received public support from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the final. Meanwhile, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been one of Europe’s strongest critics of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and has supported Palestinian statehood.

FIFA 2026 | 'Superstitious' Argentina president Javier Milei will not attend world cup final against Spain

Argentina's President, Javier Milei, arrived for a high-profile state visit to Israel from April 19 to April 22. This was his third trip since taking office in 2023. On the first day of the state visit, he arrived at the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem, where he was seen praying and visibly emotional. The visit was centred around the signing of the “Issac Accords”. The Accord was signed later in the day during a ceremony which was attended by US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, hinting at the trilateral nature of the arrangement between the US, Israel and Argentina. A move that has created a potential recalibration, a pivot of Argentina's foreign policy from "third-worldism" toward the "western world," specifically the US and Israel, which many fear is a dangerous ideological gambit in a region which remained non-aligned for the longest period.

What is the Isaac Accord?
Issac Accord plans to normalise diplomatic, economic, and strategic relations with Latin American democracies and to build a transcontinental alliance based on shared Judeo-Christian values, innovation, and security between Israel and Argentina. It is being framed by the Israelis as a successor to the Abraham Accords. Netanyahu praised Milei as “a great friend of Israel,” and praised him for his “moral clarity”. Argentine President Javier Milei termed the relationship between the two nations is of “moral, spiritual, and political unity.” The so-called Isaac Accord seeks to link Israel with Latin American democracies, starting with partners like Uruguay, Panama, and Costa Rica. It includes a memorandum of understanding on the sharing of security tech and intelligence. Milei also confirmed the launch of the first direct flight between Buenos Aires and Tel Aviv, to be operated by El Al starting in November, and committed to shifting the Argentine embassy to occupied Jerusalem. Also Read: Palestinians vote in West Bank for first time since 2023, Gaza since 2006
Why is Javier Milei pushing for normalisation with Israel?
The Argentine President is trying to frame the Accord (which has not been ratified yet) as one of shared security concerns and political conformity. For decades, Argentina maintained a "grey zone" of neutrality, but this seemingly innocuous move is more like a personal ideological mission than a diplomatic realignment. Javier Milei has expressed his desire to convert to Judaism and has appointed his personal rabbi, Axel Wahnish, as Argentina’s Ambassador to Israel. He sees Jerusalem as the spiritual capital of Israel.“The announcement alongside Benjamin Netanyahu of the so-called ‘Isaac Accords,’ inspired by the Abraham Accords, appears more like a political construct than a response to real needs in Latin America,” said Julia Argentina Perié, President of the International Relations Observatory of the VICTORIA Foundation. She described this as "personalising" his nations' foreign policy by elevating relations with Israel to a high-level strategic partnership, bypassing traditional diplomatic caution, closely resembling the personal ideological affinity of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Israeli Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Perié described the process as the import of the geopolitical agenda of the West, or specifically the US. Further, Milei wants to polarise the continent of South America and oppose Brazilian Lula da Silva's image as the leader of the Global South with his image as the leader of freedom and primary partner for a "Trumpian" US foreign policy in the region. At the same time, domestically modernise and potentially privatise internal security functions, using "counter-terrorism" as a justification to monitor domestic opposition. While Milei is "Trumping" around in his own ideological and political motivation, some historical facts are extremely disturbing for the Argentinian national sovereignty. Theodor Herzl, the father of Political Zionism, in his 1897 pamphlet Der Judenstaat or The Jewish State, flirted with the idea of a Jewish state in Argentina. While the movement ultimately chose Palestine for colonisation, a group of people bought land and created massive agricultural colonies or “Jewish Gauchos” in Argentina. Eventually, they shifted to cities like Buenos Aires. Herzl is not just a footnote, a central figure who ties the history of Zionism to Argentina and one of the reasons the Latin American country has the largest Jewish population on the continent.

Argentina's Markets Soar After Javier Milei's Party Wins Midterms

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Oct 27) said that Argentina’s President Javier Milei has a “lot of help” from the United States in his party’s landslide victory in the midterm elections. Trump’s remarks come after Milei’s La Libertad Avanza (LLA) party secured a win in Sunday’s polls, rebounding from a series of setbacks with 40.7 per cent of the votes. The Trump administration had earlier offered a bailout potentially worth $40 billion to the country but warned it could reconsider support if Milei did not perform well.Speaking on a trip to Asia, Trump hailed Milei’s win, calling it an unexpectedly “big win” and saying that it was “a great thing.”“He had a lot of help from us. He had a lot of help. I gave him an endorsement, a very strong endorsement,” Trump said aboard Air Force One. He also praised his top officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was overseeing the financial assistance to Argentina.“We are sticking with a lot of the countries in South America. We focus very much on South America,” Trump said. Ahead of the voting in Argentina, Trump signed $20 billion currency swap to support Milei. He also proposed a $20 billion debt investment facility.“We’ve made a lot of money based on that election, because the bonds have gone up. Their whole debt rating has gone up,” Trump said, but added that the US was “not in that for the money, per se.” Speaking to reporters, Bessent described the assistance as a “bridge” to help Milei’s economic project.“He’s working against 100 years of bad policies,” he said. “He’s gonna break them thanks to support from the United States.”

Argentina follows Trump's lead, withdraws from World Health Organization

Argentina's monthly inflation is its lowest since late 2021, marking a key achievement for President Javier Milei as he makes lowering price spirals the centrepiece of his administration, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Consumer prices rose 3.5 per cent in September from the month before, barely touching the Bloomberg survey median of 3.6 per cent. The annual measure of inflation relaxed to 209 per cent, according to government data published Thursday. Inflation had held out at around 4 per cent since May.

Housing and utilities led monthly price hikes, followed by clothing and education.

“Inflation was pretty level across the country and core inflation went down, which is a positive data point that obviously breaks the 4% barrier,” said Maria Castiglioni, director of consulting firm C&T Asesores in Buenos Aires.

In September, Milei cut the country’s primary import tax from 17.5 to 7.5 per cent, and the difference between the official exchange rate and the parallel rate, which also factors into prices, narrowed. Milei said he plans to eliminate the import tax by year-end entirely. He emphasised that capital controls, in addition to the peso's 2 per cent monthly depreciation rate, are going to stay, which also helps contain inflation.

Meanwhile, Milei continued trimming subsidies. The cost of train fares surged nearly 40 per cent in the past month, now selling at the minimum ticket price of 280 from 200 pesos. The cost of water, gas, and electricity shot up by about 4 per cent as the president axed the old government aid, with gas priced higher too.

Milei’s victory lap is expected to continue, with economists forecasting that annual inflation will drop sharply to 40.9 per cent in the next 12 months, according to a monthly survey conducted by the nation’s central bank. The central bank survey, which came out on Oct. 4, showed economists expect annual inflation to decline to 123.6 per cent by the end of 2024.

Argentina's inflation drops to 2021 levels

Since Javier Milei took office as Argentina's President, the country's relationship with China has entered a critical phase. Previously, Milei harshly criticized China, labeling its ruling Communist Party as oppressive and threatening to sever ties in favor of closer alignment with the US and Israel. However, his administration now appears to be adopting a more pragmatic stance.

Argentina: Javier Milei’s Pragmatic Turn on China Ties

For President Javier Milei, July data showed a larger-than-expected upturn. This is encouraging news after the economy has been mired in its sixth recession in a decade.

Argentina's Economy Grows More Than Expected In July

Argentina's economy contracted 1.7 per cent in the second quarter compared with the preceding three months, according to the country's statistics agency, which said that sent the embattled South American nation deeper into recession.

Argentina's gross domestic product fell 1.7 per cent year-over-year, worse than analyst forecasts of a 1.4 per cent contraction compared with the year-earlier period.

This is the fifth successive annualised quarterly contraction and the third successive quarter-on-quarter for the South American economy.

Argentina's major agricultural sector led the growth, rising 81.2 per cent from a year earlier, and fishing was up 41.3 per cent. Still, construction dropped 22.2 per cent, manufacturing fell 17.4 per cent and retail activity slipped 15.7 per cent, INDEC said.

The slumps in consumption and private investment continued, INDEC said, even though Argentina reduced its imports and increased its exports. Financial services, real estate, hotels, and restaurants also saw activity shrink.

Argentina slipped into a technical recession - two straight periods of quarter-on-quarter GDP contraction - in the first quarter of this year. It closed in 2023 with a 1.6 per cent contraction.

The libertarian President Javier Milei, who took office in December, has pursued hard austerity measures that have pounded economic activity and forced poverty and unemployment up.

The government says the cost-cutting measures are required to restrain the world's highest inflation, which is hovering above 250 per cent, rebuild its foreign reserves, and reverse years of deep fiscal deficits.

While monthly inflation has hovered around the same level since May, Milei's government on Sunday published a 2025 draft budget, putting inflation at just above 18 per cent next year, GDP at 5 per cent next year, and a further 5 per cent in 2026.

Argentine markets cheered Milei's plan for a "zero" deficit budget, but they fell slightly on Wednesday following the US Federal Reserve's announcement it would cut interest rates by 50 basis points.
