The survey revealed that 17.3 per cent of males and 14.6 per cent of women aged between 18 and 34 said that they do not intend to get married in the future, the highest per cent since a 1982 survey, in which only 2.3 per men and 4.1 per cent women stated that they would not get married, The Guardian reported.

In addition to this, an increasing desire among young working women to benefit from the freedoms that come with their being unmarried has contributed to the trend to a number of other causes. However, men claim to enjoy being single as well, but they also expressed their worries about their employment and ability to support their families.

Experts have urged Japan to urgently address Japan's infamously long working hours to make it simpler for working women after having kids.

When asked about an "ideal" lifestyle, nearly 40 per cent of men and 34 per cent of women said being able to balance work and children. Additionally, less than 7 per cent of men stated that they would want their spouse to take care of the family while staying at home, which implies a changing attitude regarding gender roles.

The health ministry June reported that the birth rate in Japan in 2021 had decreased by 29,231 from the previous year to a record low of 811,604.

It is a popular conception that alcoholic drinks are extremely popular among the youth in any country, but Japan seems to be slowly changing the trend. In the past few years, the popularity of low and non-alcoholic drinks has surged massively in the country with the percentage of Japanese people in the age group of 21-30 years who drink has gone down to 7.8% from 20.3% back in 1999.

With the market slowly moving towards non-alcoholic drinks, the major alcohol producers in Japan are also looking to diversify their products. One of the first major attractions was the introduction of an alcohol-free “beer garden” that was launched for enthusiasts in one of Tokyo’s tallest buildings.

While the concept of beer gardens is not new to Japan, the organisers in the event in Roppongi decided to replace the beer with non-alcoholic frizzy drinks and a variety of mocktails.

"Consumers are not enjoying just alcoholic beverages. We think they value more of the communication that's generated when drinking or would like to enjoy the atmosphere of the place where they drink," said Suntory general manager Masako Koura in an interaction with Reuters.

The Sumadori Bar in Shibuya also has created a new line of non-alcoholic drinks or drinks with less than 3 per cent of alcohol. Mizuho Kajiura, chief executive of the venture, has said that this is the way forward for the industry and said that they already have a similar business in Indonesia.

"The aim of this bar is to value customers who cannot drink so that they can happily come here with people who do drink. If other restaurants and bars can understand our aim, I think they would get more customers."

As his moniker suggests, Morimoto offers a rather unconventional rental service to his customers in Tokyo by contracting himself out to, in his own words, "do nothing."

"I am the 'Rental-Do-Nothing-Man'. I provide a service where I can be rented to do nothing. This 'Do-Nothing-Man' is me and I rent myself out. I go to places where I am asked to, and I do nothing there," says&nbsp;Shoji Morimoto.&nbsp;

Although agencies exist where you may hire actors to play your buddy or even your entire family, such rental services are not unheard of in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/wider-implication-of-china-taiwan-us-conundrum-513003">Japan</a>. Morimoto, however, stands out for his "effort-free" approach rather than for taking on any particular character.

"What I mean by doing nothing is, I eat and drink (with my clients), and I answer their simple questions with simple answers," Morimoto clarified.

Currently, Morimoto has about a quarter of a million Twitter followers, and about 25% of his clients are repeat business, including one woman who has used him 270 times.

Morimoto will provide his company for 10,000 yen ($71.20) each reservation. He said he won't initiate discussion but will provide straightforward answers if necessary. In addition to his cost, he also charges for transportation, and if the assignment falls between mealtimes, clients will also be responsible for his food.

Despite offering what could seem to be a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-can-risky-g7-cap-on-russian-oil-prices-backfire-512727">specialised</a> service, Morimoto is frequently booked for three jobs a day.

Data analyst Aruna Chida is one such customer who learned about Morimoto while his company was buzzing on social media. The former resident of Mumbai, 27, had purchased a sari and was eager to wear it in public, but she was hesitant to invite her friends since they "could feel humiliated." Instead, she made the choice to employ Morimoto to accompany her for afternoon tea while she was dressed in the Indian outfit.

She paid for Morimoto's services for other reasons in addition to that, though.

"When I’m with my friends, I kind of feel like I have to entertain them. But with 'Mr. Rental' (Morimoto), I feel like I don't have to say much and I can just keep quiet (whenever I want)," Chida said.

Due to privacy concerns, another client, who only desired to be named by her nickname "Kusa," claimed she was having a bad day at work and needed to do something out of the ordinary to lift her spirits. Thus, the 33-year-old government employee engaged Morimoto in October 2020 to go to a curry supper with her while she was wearing a Pikachu costume. He was employed by her once more to hear about her life.

With Morimoto's growing notoriety have come several demands that he has declined. Morimoto has previously turned down clients who wanted to take him to Trinidad and Tobago and those who asked him to assist with a move, in addition to his blanket denial of any requests that are sexual in nature.

Meet the Japanese man who gets paid to 'do nothing'

The upcoming state funeral for Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has sparked major controversy as the current government is set to spend nearly 1.7 billion yen ($12 million), which has caused a public uproar in the form of petitions, protests, and court orders. The former PM was assassinated during a campaign speech, earlier this year, in July.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno announced the estimate of the memorial service scheduled for September 27, which includes the security and reception costs. This was following the announcement of the previous estimate of over 200 million yen, which did not include the aforementioned costs for foreign leaders and dignitaries. The announcement was also a backtrack from the government’s previous statement which indicated that the overall cost would not be revealed until after the state funeral.&nbsp;

While there is no clarity on the details of the service, the organizers have reportedly indicated that at least 6,000 guests are expected to attend the service to be held in Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan hall. Approximately 50 of the 190 overseas delegations are “heads of state-level”, said Matsuno. This may include leaders like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, US Vice President Kamala Harris, and former US President Barack Obama.&nbsp;

According to Matsuno, the policing of the event will cost nearly 800 million yen. Furthermore, hosting foreign delegations will add 600 million yen to the bill. In response to a question speculating the cost of the service to be over 1.7 billion yen, the chief cabinet secretary said, “If we were to give a simplified estimate, it would be close to what you said.” This figure has been compared to the last state funeral held for former premier Shigeru Yoshida, in 1967, which cost approximately 18 million yen. In today’s time, it would be close to 70 million.&nbsp;

The service has threatened the incumbent Prime Minister Fumio Kishida who is facing a backlash as many in the country have argued that these funds could be allocated elsewhere given the current government’s heavy debt. However, Kishida defended his decision of holding a state funeral for Abe, at a press conference last week, saying that the service would “show our determination not to bend to violence and to firmly uphold democracy.”&nbsp;

The public opposition has also intensified over the alleged ties between the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) MPs and the controversial South Korean-based Unification Church known for mass weddings, aggressive fundraising practices, and problematic recruiting.&nbsp;

On July 8, Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving prime minister of Japan was assassinated and his suspected killer Tetsuya Yamagami told prosecutors that he held a grudge against the church, which led him to seek revenge against its senior members. However, he instead killed Abe, whom he had seen in several videos released by the organization.&nbsp;

Yamagami claimed that his mother was a member of the church and donated all the family’s money and savings which in turn led him and his siblings to endure extreme poverty. Notably, last year, the former PM appeared in a video reportedly congratulating a group, which is said to be affiliated with the church, praising their commitment to upholding traditional family values.&nbsp;

In light of the scandal, Kishida addressed last week the public acknowledging that the Unification Church controversy has caused the public confidence in politics to dwindle, and said that he would demand that his party members sever ties with the organization. Meanwhile, members of his cabinet have reportedly agreed to review and cut ties with the organization. Kishida also issued an apology following media reports which exposed the extensive ties between the LDP and the church, saying, “As president of the LDP, I honestly express my apology.”&nbsp;

A recent poll by a Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun indicated that at least 56% of the respondents opposed the state funeral, while 38% were in support. Additionally, last month at least four protests were held against the service, one of which was outside the parliament, which according to local media saw the participation of approximately 4,000 people. On the other hand, this month civic groups also presented online petitions, signed by 280,000 people, calling for the memorial service to be canceled, according to NHK.

According to Matsuno, the policing of the event will cost nearly 800 million yen. Furthermore, hosting foreign delegations will add 600 million yen to the bill. In response to a question speculating the cost of the service to be over 1.7 billion yen, the chief cabinet secretary said, “If we were to give a simplified estimate, it would be close to what you said.” This figure has been compared to the last state funeral held for former premier Shigeru Yoshida, in 1967, which cost approximately 18 million yen. The service has threatened the incumbent Prime Minister Fumio Kishida who is facing a backlash as many in the country have argued that these funds could be allocated elsewhere given the current government’s heavy debt. However, Kishida defended his decision of holding a state funeral for Abe, at a press conference last week, saying that the service would “show our determination not to bend to violence and to firmly uphold democracy.” The public opposition has also intensified over the alleged ties between the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) MPs and the controversial South Korean-based Unification Church known for mass weddings, aggressive fundraising practices, and problematic recruiting. On July 8, Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving prime minister of Japan was assassinated and his suspected killer Tetsuya Yamagami told prosecutors that he held a grudge against the church, which led him to seek revenge against its senior members. However, he instead killed Abe, whom he had seen in several videos released by the organization. Yamagami claimed that his mother was a member of the church and donated all the family’s money and savings which in turn led him and his siblings to endure extreme poverty. Notably, last year, the former PM appeared in a video reportedly congratulating a group, which is said to be affiliated with the church, praising their commitment to upholding traditional family values. In light of the scandal, Kishida addressed last week the public acknowledging that the Unification Church controversy has caused the public confidence in politics to dwindle, and said that he would demand that his party members sever ties with the organization. Meanwhile, members of his cabinet have reportedly agreed to review and cut ties with the organization. Kishida also issued an apology following media reports which exposed the extensive ties between the LDP and the church, saying, “As president of the LDP, I honestly express my apology.” A recent poll by a Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun indicated that at least 56% of the respondents opposed the state funeral, while 38% were in support. Additionally, last month at least four protests were held against the service, one of which was outside the parliament, which according to local media saw the participation of approximately 4,000 people. Japan provides grants, loan assistance, technical cooperation, support through UN agencies, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Japanese and International NGOs. Japan has always had a multipronged pronged line of action which includes promoting high-quality inclusive growth, development cooperation for inclusive growth, mitigating vulnerability and tsunami relief," Lt Gen Shankar (retd) said.

However, he cautions that India must not once again be seen as interfering in Lankan internal affairs, as was the case during the IPKF, LTTE period. He points out that this led to India's marginalisation and created space for China's foray into the island nation. He opines, that India’s opportunity lies in China’s economic slowdown, internal problems, and its preoccupation with Taiwan and USA.

Regarding other nations that have an influence over Sri Lanka, he said that USA and Pakistan have not been major creditors but have a role to play. "USA's nod will be necessary for the IMF bailout to come through and given the strategic convergence with India, the US will not lose this opportunity to strengthen the Indo-Pacific strategy. The US will attempt to counter China's influence, by working with India and Japan," he opined.&nbsp;

He also noted that Pakistan has always had good ties with Sri Lanka and was the main provider of arms during the LTTE period. Gen Shankar(retd) mentioned the recent docking of PNS Taimur, a Pakistani naval ship in Colombo and a Naval exercise between two countries as a good indicator of Pak-Lanka relations, despite various other detracting factors. He urged that India take precautions to ensure that Pakistani influence (at the behest of China) stays marginalised in Sri Lanka.

In light of Sri Lanka's foreign policy dilemma, Col R Hariharan(retd) a veteran Military Intelligence specialist who served the Indian Army said that the island nation is a strategic pivot in the Indo-Pacific. Elaborating on Sri Lanka's Geostrategic compulsions, he said that the country was midway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and had a favourable tropical climate.&nbsp;

On how Sri Lankans viewed India and China, he feels that the Lankan side would always think about India's reaction on any issue, as India is barely 29kms away (from certain points in the Southern State of Tamil Nadu), whereas China is more than 2000kms away. He pointed out that Sri Lanka is a strategic pivot whose foreign policy is guided by physical, and geographical factors and that Colombo is a good eavesdropping location.

With the approach of Typhoon Hinnamnor, the strongest global storm this year, China and Japan have suspended ferry services as well as flights.

Blowing it's way past Taiwan and the Koreas with fierce winds and heavy rains, Typhoon Hinnamnor is packing gusts up to 252 kilometres per hour.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Hinnamnor is forecasted to move gradually northward into the East China Sea.

In order to avoid accidents, more than 50,000 police officers have been deployed in Shanghai to aid with rescues and guide traffic away from dangerous areas.&nbsp;

Bringing the possibility of flooding, the typhoon is also expected to bring intense rainfall to the Korean Peninsula.

Warning of heavy rains in northeastern Zhejiang, Shanghai and Taiwan, China’s National Meteorological Center issued a yellow typhoon warning on Sunday.

Urging people against large gatherings both indoors and outdoors, Chinese ships were told to return to port to take shelter from the wind.

Threatening the grounding of more than 100 flights connecting the islands and parts of the main southern island of Kyushu, the typhoon lashed Okinawa and nearby islands with heavy rain and fierce winds.

With fierce rainfall hitting the pavement, footage on Japan’s NHK national television showed trees violently shaken by the storm.

Routinely seeing heavy rains that cause landslides or flash floods, Japan is currently in typhoon season and is hit by around 20 such storms a year.

According to the island’s Central News Agency, Taoyuan and Hsinchu counties in Taiwan were evacuated to shelters on Saturday amid the heavy rain and strong winds.

The China Central Meteorological Observatory has issued a yellow alert and heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in Xinjiang, Shanghai, and some coastal areas of the region for the next 2 days. Taiwan's weather bureau has also issued a heavy rain advisory for the entire region.
