"What upsets China most is we have allies, they are expansive and extensive," Emanuel said after accompanying Kishida on a tour of the Ronald Reagan.

Kishida's Liberal Democratic Party has pledged to double Japan's defence budget to around 2% of gross domestic product within five years.

South Korea has also sent its naval assets for the fleet review. The relations between two US allies have been on the mend post a spat over compensation for wartime labourers and Korean women forced to work in Japanese military brothels.

In 2018, Japan had refused to join South Korea's fleet review after the latter asked Japan to not fly its rising sun ensign. South Korea views it as a symbol of Japanese wartime aggression.

Both countries have drawn closer as North Korea ratchets up its missile launches, including a suspected long-range missile on Thursday that triggered an alert in central and northern Japan for residents to seek shelter.

China declined a invitation to join Japan's fleet review. Russia was not invited in light of Ukraine war.

North Korea fired at least three ballistic missiles near the Japanese territory making this the second test flight in a month. This comes a day after the nuclear-armed country fired a record 23 missiles in a day, one of which landed off the coast of South Korea.&nbsp;

However, one of the&nbsp;intercontinental ballistic missiles failed to launch following its second stage separation, the Yonhap news agency reported citing the South Korean military. 
 
The J-Alert Emergency Broadcasting System warned the residents of Miyagi, Yamagata, and Niigata prefectures of the country to seek shelter indoors as well as prompted the Japanese government to issue evacuation alerts and suspend train services in the country.&nbsp; 
 
However, minutes after the launch was first reported, Japan’s Coast Guard said that the missile had already fallen into the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that they detected, what they believe to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch, from near the North Korean capital Pyongyang and subsequently fired two short-range missiles an hour later from Kaechon, north of the capital city.&nbsp;

The North Korean military launched 17 missiles in the morning and later, launched six more.

One of the missiles landed in international waters which were just 26 km away from the border, according to South Korean authorities. Reports suggest that the Japanese government started buying the yen last month, a first since 1998, to counter the sharp decline of the currency against the dollar. The finance ministry report disclosed the data for the period between September 29 to October 27, however, does not indicate the number of times the government intervened.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, in September, Japanese Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki had talked about the government’s move to buy the yen, a first in over two decades, while repeatedly implying that he would not tolerate any speculative moves in the yen.&nbsp;

This comes amid global concern about the strength of the dollar this year with the US Federal Reserve’s push to increase interest rates to combat inflation in the country attracting larger investments in dollar-denominated assets while the BoJ is reportedly keeping interest rates near zero. On October 21, the yen hit a 32-year intraday low of 151.93 yen to the dollar, said&nbsp;reports.

Meanwhile, the country’s top currency official, Masato Kanda, suggested that the government with its almost $1.3 trillion in foreign reserves has a “limitless” amount of funds to conduct interventions, said a report by Financial Times. On the other hand, analysts have questioned the effectiveness of such unilateral actions while others have expressed caution about this move increasing market volatility.&nbsp;

A ruling party official on Monday indicated the package may total around 26 trillion yen ($174.56 billion).&nbsp;

Yamagiwa became the first minister to resign from Kishida's government and the highest profile political casualty thus far from a widening scandal sparked by the killing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July.&nbsp;

The suspect in the killing bore a grudge against the Unification Church, alleging it bankrupted his mother, and blamed Abe for promoting it.&nbsp;

Abe's death brought to light widespread links between the church, which critics say is akin to a cult, and members of Kishida's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), causing a precipitous fall in his support ratings.&nbsp;

Asked by a reporter about whether Goto's background as a long-time finance ministry bureaucrat could steer the government towards a more hawkish fiscal stance, Kishida brushed aside speculation saying: "I am confident that he will work on socio-economic reforms from a broad perspective."&nbsp;

A private-sector economist said the appointment of Goto was also likely based on his experience handling coronavirus-related policies as Kishida's former health minister. The economy minister's responsibilities include COVID-19 countermeasures, among others.&nbsp;

The studio tour will be located at Toshimaen and so naturally, Toshimaen Station undergoing Potter transformation. A new two-storey&nbsp;structure will be built within the station which will have a dark red train platform reminiscent of Hogsmeade train station, where the Hogwarts Express ends its journey and where each year, young wizards arrive to get enrolled in Hogwarts.&nbsp;

Not just Toshimaen, but Ikebukuro Station too will undergo a similar transformation. The station is frequently used to get to Toshimaen. Reports state that platforms one and two- which connect to trains servicing Toshimaen- will be modeled on London’s King’s Cross train station, where Hogwarts pupils get an entry to the famous platforms 9 and 3/4.&nbsp; 
 
Needless to say, the station will sport brown brick facades and analog clocks to look like an extension of the Potter universe.&nbsp;

A Japanese man tasked with preserving cultural heritage accidentally ploughed his car into the country's oldest toilet in a centuries-old Buddhist temple, partially destroying it, police said Tuesday.

Tofukuji Temple in the western Kyoto region houses a toilet said to date back to the 15th century, earning it the designation of an important cultural asset.

But the original wooden door leading to the site was "ruined" after the driver, a 30-year-old man from the Kyoto Heritage Preservation Association, accidentally backed his car into it on Monday morning, police told AFP.

Having parked in front of the toilet, the man hit the gas to restart the car without realising he was still in reverse, police said.

"We've been told it's going to require a lot of work to restore," a Kyoto police official said. 
Walls inside also sustained minor damage, but the actual latrines, two rows of pits, survived intact, Norihiko Murata, a Kyoto official in charge of cultural heritage preservation, told AFP.

The toilet was traditionally used by monks as part of their ascetic training, although it is no longer in use.

"It is of course disappointing that part of this important cultural property has been damaged like this," Murata said.

"We will discuss how to restore it in a way that will retain as much of its cultural value as possible."
