But what has been interesting this year is the use of modern technology. CCTV cameras have been installed almost at every corner and street. Modern bulletproof vehicles have also been sent to the valley on the directions of the union government. Drones have also been pressed into service to monitor the dense forest area which could be used by terrorists to hide.&nbsp;

“For the yatra, we have made all security arrangements. Pilgrims are coming here with enthusiasm and the government has made all necessary arrangement for the safe yatra,” &nbsp;DS Ambeah, DIG CRPF told WION.&nbsp;

The government has been directed to ensure optimum use of the latest technologies and gadgets including tracking chips. These chips have been installed in vehicles to locate and check the locations. This will also help the administration to keep a check of every vehicle and stop unregistered pilgrims.&nbsp;

“The security arrangements are very good, in fact, I am coming here for the second time. We aren’t worried at all. We were escorted in bulletproof cars by the security forces,” said a pilgrim from Punjab.&nbsp;

A terrorist was killed in an encounter on Friday which took place in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district, police said.

The encounter broke out in&nbsp;the early morning after a cordon and search operation was launched by security forces in Kralpora Checkpora area.

During the search operation, the hiding terrorists fired on the search party of the forces and it was retaliated.

The identification of the terrorist is yet unknown.

Authorities have made tight security arrangements for the safety of pilgrims during the 45-day long Amarnath Yatra from July 1 which will be conducted under the surveillance of CCTV cameras at vantage points.&nbsp;

Speaking to media, Deputy Commissioner Vikas Kundal, Kathua, said, CCTV has already been installed in Lakhnapur. "High security arrangements have been made on the National Highway from Lakhanpur for a 40-kilometre stretch which has been divided into four zones. Every security Zone will be supervised by DSP-rank officer.&nbsp;

On highways, special barriers have been set up and mobile Quick Reaction Teams will be there along with security officials," he said."We are also conducting surprise vehicle checks in order to foil the entry of any anti-social elements," he added. Kundal also said they have set up multiple reception centers which will provide information to the pilgrims on the availability of drinking water, toilets and other basic facilities."I have inspected the reception centres.&nbsp;

These centres will provide information on basic facilities such as yatra route, weather condition, registration counter, medical check-up counter, BSNL sim issue counter, one-time traffic check counter and other facilities of drinking water and sanitation. A meeting with the senior officer has also been arranged to finalise these arrangements," he said.

"Article 370 is effective only in Jammu and Kashmir, which was negotiated by the then Prime Minister," Shah said.

"One-third of Jammu and Kashmir is not with us. Who is responsible for it? Who called for ceasefire back then? It was Jawaharlal Nehru who did it and gave that portion (PoK) to Pakistan. You say we don't take people into confidence, but Nehruji did it without taking the then Home Minister into confidence," he said.

Shah said if the then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was taken into confidence, the entire Kashmir had been part of India.

He also said that Sardar Patel led the accession of most of the princely states including Hyderabad and Junagarh and both are today part of India.

"The country is suffering due to his (Nehru's) mistakes. Thousands of people were killed in Partition and terrorism spread across the country," he said.

Shah's remarks led to verbal spat between the Opposition and the treasury benches with the Congress leaders objecting to the continued reference of Nehru by Shah.

The decision in this regard was taken at a crime review meeting of police subdivisions of Kishtwar and Atholi, chaired by Senior Superintendent of Police, Kishtwar, Shakti K Pathak, they said.&nbsp;

It said the meeting held a threadbare discussion on the police station wise list of militants whose whereabouts are not known and those who are presently in Pakistan or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).&nbsp;

"During the meeting, variation was found in the list of such militants maintained by the District Police Office (DPO), Kishtwar, and police stations of the district. In order to update the list of such militants, various instructions and directions were imparted among the Sub-Divisional Police Officers and Station House Officers concerned for necessary action," the police said.

The district, which falls in Jammu region, was rattled by the killing of state secretary of BJP Anil Parihar and his brother Ajeet Parihar on November 1 last year, followed by the assassination of senior RSS leader Chanderkant Sharma and his security guard inside a health centre on April 9.

Besides the killings, militants also snatched the service rifle of a policeman in the district on March 8, days before police circulated pictures of seven wanted terrorists and announced a cash reward and a job for anyone providing information leading to their arrest or killing. Inspector General of Police, Jammu, M K Sinha recently said at least 10 local militants -- eight belonging to Hizbul Mujahideen and two affiliated with Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) -- were active in the district, which also witnessed two encounters between militants and search parties in Marwah area on May 31 and Keshwan forest on June 21

While two special police officers were injured in the brief Marwah gunfight, the militants managed their escape after another brief encounter in Keshwan forest, though one of them was believed to have got injured.&nbsp;

According to police sources, about three dozen local militants have crossed the LoC and are presently living in Pakistan or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The police said the meeting discussed all sensitive and sensational cases with SSP personally checking the case files of such cases and directed the Investigation Officers concerned for speedy disposal of these cases.&nbsp;

"The investigating staff was directed to conduct the investigation of cases with zeal, dedication and with transparency at the earliest and bring the pendency to the minimum," the police said, adding the police station staff was also advised to conduct foot patrolling in their respective jurisdictions.

The meeting also discussed the measures to improve the quality of investigation of accident cases, motor vehicle theft, burglary, NDPS Act and other cases.

Besides, missing persons, inquest proceedings, the arrest of absconders and action taken under preventive measures were also reviewed, the police said, adding the issue of public complaints pending with police sub-division were also discussed.

Meanwhile, the SSP Kishtwar advised the police officers posted in the district in various capacities to provide an honest, clean and fair policing to the general masses.&nbsp;

He directed that there is zero tolerance to corruption, crime and indiscipline at any level.

&nbsp;"The Union Home Minister directed that the government should commemorate the martyrdom of its policemen in their hometowns and villages in an appropriate manner each year. Prominent public places should also be named after martyred policemen," a statement said.&nbsp;

Shah also chaired a review meeting over law &amp; order situation in the state.&nbsp;He reviewed the overall security situation in the state with special emphasis on restoration of peace in Kashmir and counter-insurgency operations, the officials said.

"Union Home Minister, while appreciating the significant improvement in all the parameters relating to the security situation, directed that there should be continued strict action against terror funding. The Rule of Law should be enforced," an official from Home Ministry told media in Srinagar.&nbsp;

The meetings in Srinagar were attended by the Governor Satya Pal Malik, Union Home Secretary, all four Advisors, the Chief Secretary and Senior officials of the State and Central Governments, of Security Agencies and the Armed Forces.&nbsp;

The other meetings were also focused on development programmes and how to improve the lives of the common man. "The review covered a wide range of issues connected with improving the economic condition of the people of Jammu &amp; Kashmir, providing them with employment and livelihood opportunities, providing them the benefit of social security schemes, and raising their incomes," Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam said at a press conference adding that he would review periodically the performance of the state on multiple fronts

Security forces on Wednesday killed an unidentified militant in an encounter in a forest in Tral in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district, police said.

Troops of 42 Rashtriya Rifles with Special Operations Group, Tral were carrying out a cordon and search operation during which the encounter broke out, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;

On receipt of information, troops of 180 Batallion CRPF rushed to the spot for reinforcement. Further details are awaited.&nbsp;

"One militant was killed in the gun battle while there were no casualties among the security forces," he added. 
The identity and group affiliation of the slain militant is being ascertained.

More than 700 terrorists have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir over the last three years, the Home Ministry said on Tuesday, news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;

A total of 113 terrorists were killed between January and 16 June this year, 257 were killed in 2018, 213 in 2017 and 150 in 2016, taking the total number of those killed during the period to 733, it said.

As many as 112 civilians have also lost their lives during this period in the state. Of them, 15 had died in 2016, 40 in 2017, 39 in 2018 and 18 between January and 16 June, this year.

"The government has adopted a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism. Security forces are taking effective and continuous action in countering terrorism. This has resulted in a corresponding change in the number of such incidents, including casualties," Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

"Security forces keep a close watch on persons who attempt to provide support to terrorists and initiate action against them," he added.

Shah was also briefed about the steps taken for ensuring the smooth and safe conduct of the annual Amarnath Yatra, which is due to commence on July 1, the officials said.

He is also scheduled to meet the families of policemen killed in militant attacks in the state.

Earlier this month, Shah chaired&nbsp;a high-level security meeting to take stock of internal security in the country and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, which was attended by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and the Intelligence Bureau chief.

The Home Minister has asserted that the policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government of zero tolerance towards terrorism will continue in Jammu and Kashmir.

Home minister Amit Shah will embark&nbsp;on a two-day visit to the Kashmir valley from Wednesday.&nbsp;

More than 700 terrorists have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir over the last three years, the Home Ministry said on Tuesday.

A total of 113 terrorists were killed between January and 16 June this year, 257 were killed in 2018, 213 in 2017 and 150 in 2016, taking the total number of those killed during the period to 733, it said.

As many as 112 civilians have also lost their lives during this period in the state. Of them, 15 had died in 2016, 40 in 2017, 39 in 2018 and 18 between January and 16 June, this year.

"The government has adopted a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism. Security forces are taking effective and continuous action in countering terrorism. This has resulted in a corresponding change in the number of such incidents, including casualties," Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy said in a written reply to Lok Sabha.

"Security forces keep a close watch on persons who attempt to provide support to terrorists and initiate action against them," he added.

Several gallantry award winners, both serving and retired, who had participated in 'Operation Vijay', are attending the event.&nbsp;

The Indian armed forces displayed exceptional valour to successfully dislodged the enemy from the strategic hill in the Drass-Kargil area, an official said.

The Mirage-2000 aircraft played a crucial role in the battles fought during the war and also hit enemy targets bunkered in at the Tiger Hill. During the war, the IAF had conducted operation Safed Sagar as a part of operation Vijay of the army.&nbsp;

A number of events have been planned by the army in Delhi and Dras in Jammu and Kashmir next month to mark the 20th anniversary of the 'Kargil Vijay Diwas', officials had earlier said. The anniversary celebrations for this year will be spread over three days from July 25-27.

"However, as part of the build-up to the main event, numerous activities have been planned to be organised all over the country from the first week of July," an official said.

The celebrations in the national capital will begin on July 14 with the illumination of a 'Victory Flame' from the National War Memorial in Delhi, which would traverse through 11 towns and cities to finally culminate at Dras where it will be merged with the eternal flame at the 'Kargil War Memorial', he said.

The objective of these celebrations is to evoke the feeling of patriotism through nationwide campaigns especially amongst the youth and to pay homage to the valiant soldiers.

"The Kargil War will always be remembered for its strategic and tactical surprises, the self-imposed national strategy of restraint in keeping the war limited to Kargil-Siachen sectors, and the swiftly executed tri-services military strategy and plans," the Army had said.

"During questioning of the arrested persons, it was revealed that terrorists of proscribed outfit HM, along with above-stated associates, were planning to target police and security forces by planting an IED in the area," he said.
