In a pre-dawn air strike, Indian Air Force Mirage 2000 jets flew inside the Pak territory and bombed the biggest training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Balakot in Pakistan.

According to Vijay Gokhale, India’s Foreign Secretary, in the precise air strike that destroyed the terrorist training camp, a very large number of JeM terrorists, trainers, senior commanders and jihadis who were being trained for fidayeen action were eliminated. This facility at Balakot was headed by Maulana Yousuf Azhar (alias Ustad Ghouri), the brother-in-law of JeM chief and India’s most wanted terrorist in Pakistan, Masood Azhar.

On February 14, CRPF personnel were martyred when a terrorist smashed a car-borne IED vehicle into a CRPF convoy on the Srinagar-Jammu highway in Pulwama district. JeM was quick to take responsibility for this attack.

In a major encounter the next day, security forces in Kashmir zeroed in and eliminated three terrorists, including the mastermind of this attack. In the gun battle that ensued, four army personnel were martyred.

Opposition leaders had started talking of the “timing” and were even accusing the Narendra Modi government and the ruling BJP of politicising the Pulwama attack ahead of the parliamentary election. The West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had taken the lead by launching a tirade against Modi on this count.

Without directly mentioning the air strike and the bombing of the JeM terror camps in Pakistan, Prime Minister Modi, while addressing a BJP rally at Churu in Rajasthan on Tuesday said it is a day to celebrate. He was cheered and applauded by the people when he was emphatic in assuring the citizens that the country is in safe hands.

While giving Pakistan every chance to act against terror, Prime Minister Modi has continued to handle the problem with an iron fist. Two-and-half years ago, on 18 September 2016, four heavily armed Pakistani Islamic terrorists had attacked the Uri Army camp killing 19 soldiers. Within days of this attack, India had conducted surgical strikes and demolished a number of terrorist launch pads in Pak Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Coinciding with the punitive action by India after the Uri incident, Prime Minister Modi, while addressing the BJP National Council at Kozhikode in Kerala, had cautioned the people of Pakistan against their leaders saying they were reading the text prepared by those running terrorist outfits. While accepting the challenge of war, Modi had also underscored his priority stating that he would instead like the two countries to wage a war against poverty and illiteracy.

During the 33rd Session of the Human Rights Council in the second fortnight of September 2016, India had focussed global attention on Pakistan and its role in spreading terror by stating that the fundamental reason for disturbances in Kashmir is cross-border terrorism promoted by Pakistan.

Over the years, Indian soldiers were laying down their life and casualties have continued to mount in Jammu and Kashmir. Besides the Pak sponsored terror or the low-intensity war waged by Pakistan, the Kashmir valley also has been reeling under the impact of violence perpetuated by the large-scale radicalisation of the Kashmiri youth. The pattern is clear, while the terrorists operating from bases in Pakistan have been infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir to strike targets in the trouble-torn state, the separatists have been working in tandem with their ISI handlers in Pakistan to radicalise the local youth being used to attack the security forces.

As there was a spurt in violent incidents and efforts had failed to ensure steps by Mehbooba Mufti, as chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, to stop the radicalisation of Kashmiri youth, Governor's rule was imposed in the trouble-torn state in June 2018 following the withdrawal of support to the then Mehbooba Mufti-led coalition government by the BJP.

JeM chief, Masood Azhar’s involvement in the 2001 Parliament attack, 2016 Pathankot attack, 2008 Mumbai attack and now the Pulwama attack has been established by the Indian authorities with evidence handed over to Pakistan to act appropriately in the war against terror. Masood Azhar was released by India in exchange for passengers of Indian Airlines flight 814 hijacked in December 1999.

Between 2004 and 2014, under the Congress-led UPA I and UPA II, the situation in Kashmir were allowed to drift and the proposals to strike targets inside Pakistan were swept under the carpet. The Modi-led NDA government’s decision to give a free hand to the defence forces and take direct action to demolish the terror infrastructure in Pakistan has led to an upsurge of support for Narendra Modi across India. Major countries are also on the same page with Modi when it comes to fighting terror.

India’s stand vis-a-vis war against terror has been underscored precisely by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj at Beijing. IAF's Balakot operation against JeM is proof of Narendra Modi government's decisiveness

Two Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists were gunned down by security forces on Wednesday during an encounter in Memander area of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/pakistan-violates-ceasefire-along-loc-yet-again-5-army-personnel-injured-199925">Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir</a>, officials said.

The encounter, which broke out between the security forces and terrorists in the wee hours of Wednesday in Shopian, has ended and security forces have begun the combing operations in the area.

The encounter comes a day after India carried out air strikes at a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) camp in Balakot in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale&nbsp;on Tuesday said Indian Air Force has eliminated a “large number” of terrorists, including top commanders, during multiple air strikes in the terror launch pads.

The terror camp in a thick forest area atop a hill was led by Ustad Gauri, brother-in-law of JeM chief Masood Azhar, Gokhale said, making a statement before the media, hours after the air strikes using Mirage 2000 were carried out.

In retaliation, Pakistan reportedly violated ceasefire in a number of places along the LoC. Heavy shelling was also reported in the region.

Giving details about the injuries and damage forces suffered, Corps Commander said that all officers who were injured yesterday are stable and out of danger. "All officers led from the front, the brigadier who is injured, had cut short his leave and joined the operations directly after flying back," he said adding that forces maintained calm to avoid civilian casualties.&nbsp;

He said that there was an excellent synergy between the police, CRPF and the Indian army which has yielded good results.&nbsp;

Appeal to local terrorists:

Asking mothers to ask their sons to leave the path of violence, Dhillon made an appeal to the terrorists to surrender or get killed. "I want to tell local youth who have picked guns and especially their mothers, to please request their sons to surrender and get back to the mainstream. Anyone who has picked the gun, he will be eliminated," he told media. He added that authorities have a good surrender policy.&nbsp;

The inspector general of police Kashmir range, SP Pani added that the youth have come back and joined the mainstream, however they wouldn't give details about them as they may face a backlash.&nbsp;

On investigation:

The officials, however, declined to diverge details about the investigation, saying that this was an ongoing process and details will be shared at right time. However, sources had told WION that the explosive used in the attack could have been locally purchased but needed a chemical expert to put it all together.&nbsp;

Remember, agencies suspect that an Afghan war veteran named Abdul Rashid Ghazi is another brain behind the attack, as the vehicle bound attacks are frequently witnessed in Afghanistan. Forces believe that he had entered Kashmir in December and was an IED expert.&nbsp;

Dhillon said that they are ready to deal with anything after the exit of U.S forces from Afghanistan as fear looms that Pakistan may send expert terrorists to the valley to inflict more harm, given their expertise.&nbsp;

"These types of car bombs happened in the past but this was different. We have seen such attacks in Syria and other counties. We are ready to deal with such attack," he added.&nbsp;

Dhillon said that Jaish was the brainchild of Pakistan army and are being controlled by them including the ISI and there seems to be a clear involvement of Pakistan in the attack. The IAF also deployed the upgraded MiG-29 fighter jet in an air-to-ground role during the exercise. A total of 137 aircraft including Su-30s, Mirage 2000s, Jaguars, Mig-21 Bison, Mig-27, Mig-29, IL78, Hercules, AN-32 aircraft participated.&nbsp;

Addressing a gathering at its Markaz known as Beteha Masjid in Karachi city, JeM commander Mufti Abdul Rauf Asghar claimed responsibility for the April 26 grenade attack in the Tral township of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rauf said in his speech, "During ongoing `Daura Tafseer', news of JeM cadres fighting at battlefronts (in J&K) was pouring in. On April 25 JeM cadres were engaged in fighting against the enemy and were killed the day after ( April 26). Their funeral processions were being carried out and meanwhile, another team of JeM launched attack to take avenge of killings of cadres on the previous day".

Such statements by JeM from Pakistan have exposed Islamabad's malicious designs in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rauf motivated cadres and told them not to forget the real motive for and behind `Jihad'. He said, "At the battlefront, there is no dearth of `Mujahideen', who have been waiting in queues to enter into J&K to kill the enemy.

The Jaish-e-Mohammed has been banned in Pakistan since 2002, but it continues to train terrorists in Pakistan occupied Kashmir and provides them weapons to create troubles in Jammu and Kashmir.

Having maintained close relations with the Taliban and al Qaeda, it has carried out several attacks primarily in Jammu and Kashmir.

JeM directs its cadres to strengthen 'jihad' in Kashmir

A Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist who plotted last month&rsquo;s attack at an army camp in Sunjuwan was killed in a gun battle in south Kashmir, sources in the security forces said on Monday.

Mufti Waqas, the mastermind of the February 10 attack that left seven people, &nbsp;was killed in an encounter with the Army&rsquo;s 50 Rashtriya Rifles and the Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Police in Pulwama&rsquo;s Lethpora.

Shesh Paul Vaid, the Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police, said on Twitter that the terrorist has been gunned down.

A 35-week pregnant woman who was severely injured in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/sunjwan-army-camp-attack-3-terrorists-killed-operation-on-for-27-hours-32460">Sunjuwan attack</a> gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday night.&nbsp;

The woman was shot in her lower back by four terrorists who had entered the family quarters of the Brigade Army camp in the Sunjuwan area of Jammu, opened fire at the security forces and civilians.

The operation to flush out Jaish-e-Mohmmad (JeM) terrorists who stormed an Army camp entered the second day on Sunday. The death toll in the attack&nbsp;reached nine with the death of five more security personnel and one civilian. It has also left&nbsp;10 people injured, of which 6 are women and children.

Reviewing earlier casualty figures, Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Devendra Anand said three terrorists had been killed in the fighting that broke out before dawn on Saturday at the Sunjuwan Army station in Jammu city.

It was earlier reported that four terrorists were killed in the ensuing military operation in Sunjuwan.

The Defence spokesman, however, said that he could only confirm the killing of only three attackers.&nbsp;

Some AK-47 assault rifles and other weapons were also recovered from the terrorists killed by the security forces.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) examined the evidence collected by the Army from the site of the gun battle, an official said.

The terrorists, who attacked the Army camp in Sunjuwan, located on the outskirts of Jammu city, were believed to be from the &#39;Afzal Guru squad&#39; of JeM.&nbsp;

Since this&nbsp;attack was also the handiwork of JeM terrorists, the NIA is looking for its link with previous cases which will help them in building a stronger case against Azhar and India can make a firm case at the United Nations, the official said.

Jammu Army camp attack over; death toll at 9

Two army men were killed&nbsp;and nine others, including Major, sustained injuries in a pre-dawn attack by a&nbsp;group of three to four Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists at Sunjwan army camp in Jammu city, officials said.

Army officials said the Major, who was injured, was airlifted to an Udhampur hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.

&quot;As part of the ongoing operation in Sunjwan, the army has killed two heavily armed terrorists. The terrorists were wearing combat uniforms carrying AK 56 assault rifle, large amount of ammunition and hand grenades,&quot; the defence Public Relations Officer said.

&quot;Search of their belongings confirm the terrorists to be from Jaish-e-Mohammed. So far a JCO (Junior Commissioned Officer) and one NCO both belonging to Jammu and Kashmir have been martyred and nine others are injured. Two of them being critical. Operations will continue till all terrorists are apprehended or killed,&quot; he added.

The army said that operations were in progress with &quot;extreme caution and restraint&quot;&nbsp;to safeguard the unarmed soldiers, women and children in the houses. It said&nbsp;that most of the&nbsp;over 150 houses in the complex had been cleared and their occupants moved to safety.&nbsp;

There is no hostage crisis in the camp, ANI reported earlier.

Armoured vehicles were deployed by the army during the operation.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met the injured at the Military Hospital in Jammu.

Soon after the attack, reinforcements of the army&#39;s special forces and SOG rushed to the spot and cordoned off the whole area amid a fierce gunfight, a&nbsp;security official said.

Schools in the entire area around the camp have been closed by authorities as a precautionary measure.

A high alert has been sounded in Jammu and security beefed up in and around the city.

Intelligence inputs had warned of an attack on the army or security establishment by Jaish-e-Mohammed in view of the death anniversary of Afzal Guru who was hanged on February 9, 2013.&nbsp;

Tantray, who is the main accused in the attack on the BSF camp near Srinagar airport in October, was shot in a gunbattle with security forces in south Kashmir&#39;s Samboora.&nbsp;

The body of the militant has been recovered along with the weapon.

Tantray had taken over command of the JeM in south Kashmir in October.&nbsp;

India remembers gruesome Parliament attack, PM pays tribute to martyrs

December 13, 2001 shook the very foundations of Indian democracy. A group of terrorists belonging to the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed sneaked past the security cordon around the Parliament of India. The attack killed six Delhi Police personnel and two Parliament Security Service personnel.

Five terrorists were killed.&nbsp;

The attack left a deep scar on the psyche of the nation. We felt vulnerable but, it also strengthened India&#39;s resolve to take the war to the heart of terrorism.&nbsp;

On the sixteenth anniversary of the attack, WION spoke with Radhey Sham Gupta, the&nbsp;then Special Police Commissioner in-charge of anti-terrorist operations, and Danvir Singh, editor of the Indian Defence Review.&nbsp;

WION: Why do you think an attack was launched on the Indian Parliament?

D Singh: When you look back, you realise the grand sinister design of Pakistan towards India that they have had, or rather they still have.

The attack on our Parliament was of a very high significance. It was designed to send a clear-cut message by Pakistanis to the Indians of their invincibility and ability to strike anywhere at free will with complete impunity.

The proxy war unleashed by them had already started to impact the psychology of the Indian state. Kandahar hijack and our response is the testimony to that argument. In quick succession, Pakistan had managed to seize and maintain the momentum of aggression on India after the Kargil defeat.

They had attacked the Kashmir assembly in November that year killing 38 innocent people. The intention of the enemy in carrying out such audacious attacks was to cripple the nervous system of the state. What could have been a better target other than Parliament which is the centre of gravity of Indian democracy and governance system?

WION: What were your first thoughts when you heard that Parliament has been attacked? What was the immediate action you took?

RS Gupta: I was the Special Police Commissioner in-charge of anti-terrorist&nbsp;operations at that time. My first reaction was to direct resources at the attack location and effectively deal with the terrorists -- arresting and neutralising them. Directions were very clear that in achieving our objective, no harm should be done to the MPs and VIPs at Parliament House at any cost. We were also asked to cause minimum damage on our side, both civilian and police.

Rest of the city was placed under full alert and security of all vital installations was reinforced. All Delhi Police units were placed on full emergency under senior officers. Delhi borders were put on full alert too.

WION: What was the scene at Parliament?

RS Gupta: Commissioner of Police Mr Ajay Raj Sharma had already reached Parliament House to lead the response. I too reached Parliament House shortly thereafter. Parliament House had been surrounded on all sides by police forces and units were involved in exchange of fire with terrorists. All five terrorists were neutralised before they could enter Parliament House and indulge in a&nbsp;shootout. A great role was played by Parliament staff in closing the wooden doors of the main Parliament building in time.&nbsp;Unfortunately, nine people were killed and 16 others injured in the attack by the terrorists.

Investigations were taken up immediately. Delhi Police cracked the case in 48 hours

WION: Can you tell us something about the attack that we came to know of only years later and was not evident then?

D Singh: Well!&nbsp;India realised that no matter how hard they battle with these terrorists and kill them in our own territory, we may continue with our losses in terms of precious human lives and seriously impair our psychology and in turn our will to fight. Thus, succumbing to Pakistani pressures and negotiating the Kashmir issue to their advantage.

We realised after the Parliament attack followed by Operation Parakram that the conventional option may not be a viable option. We had to prevent the attacker much before the LoC and preferably much beyond in Pakistani-held territory itself.

To that effect we did two things: firstly, we increased the pressure on the LoC by escalating artillery fire all across, making the proposition expensive to the Pakistanis both in terms of human and material resources. This forced General Musharraf to his knees literally begging for a ceasefire in 2003.

Secondly, we fenced our Line of Control. This was the game changer. Pakistan is still trying to grapple with this challenge. Today we have an upper hand and we have that initiative. Violence levels have reduced drastically in our favour. Also, the surgical strikes conducted have literally turned the tables. What Pakistan endeavoured by staging an attack on Parliament, we have achieved far much more. Pakistani establishment fears our response. India has changed, and they have realised that well.

WION: How do you think the terrorists managed to get in? What have we done to prevent such future attacks?

RS Gupta: The terrorists were able to enter the Parliament House complex by photocopying a Parliament car-parking label. They had recced the area and watched the entry procedure.

Parliament House security has since been reviewed, studied and strengthened.

WION: What is the most memorable image of that attack which has stayed with you from the event?

D Singh: Images of our CRPF jawans battling with these LeT / JeM terrorists with utmost bravery still linger on and remain totally clear in my memory. &nbsp;It was actually these images that conveyed a message that the terrorists sent by Pakistan who are religiously motivated under the ideology of Islam are in fact no-good fighters, rather they are cowards seen running petrified for cover once cornered.

On the sixteenth anniversary of the attack, WION spoke with Radhey Sham Gupta, the then Special Police Commissioner in-charge of anti-terrorist operations, and Danvir Singh, editor of the Indian Defence Review. WION: Why do you think an attack was launched on the Indian Parliament? D Singh: When you look back, you realise the grand sinister design of Pakistan towards India that they have had, or rather they still have. The attack on our Parliament was of a very high significance. It was designed to send a clear-cut message by Pakistanis to the Indians of their invincibility and ability to strike anywhere at free will with complete impunity. The proxy war unleashed by them had already started to impact the psychology of the Indian state. Kandahar hijack and our response is the testimony to that argument. In quick succession, Pakistan had managed to seize and maintain the momentum of aggression on India after the Kargil defeat. They had attacked the Kashmir assembly in November that year killing 38 innocent people. The intention of the enemy in carrying out such audacious attacks was to cripple the nervous system of the state. What could have been a better target other than Parliament which is the centre of gravity of Indian democracy and governance system? WION: What were your first thoughts when you heard that Parliament has been attacked? What was the immediate action you took? RS Gupta: I was the Special Police Commissioner in-charge of anti-terrorist operations at that time. My first reaction was to direct resources at the attack location and effectively deal with the terrorists -- arresting and neutralising them. Directions were very clear that in achieving our objective, no harm should be done to the MPs and VIPs at Parliament House at any cost. We were also asked to cause minimum damage on our side, both civilian and police. Rest of the city was placed under full alert and security of all vital installations was reinforced. All Delhi Police units were placed on full emergency under senior officers. Delhi borders were put on full alert too. WION: What was the scene at Parliament? RS Gupta: Commissioner of Police Mr Ajay Raj Sharma had already reached Parliament House to lead the response. I too reached Parliament House shortly thereafter. Parliament House had been surrounded on all sides by police forces and units were involved in exchange of fire with terrorists. All five terrorists were neutralised before they could enter Parliament House and indulge in a shootout. A great role was played by Parliament staff in closing the wooden doors of the main Parliament building in time. Unfortunately, nine people were killed and 16 others injured in the attack by the terrorists. Investigations were taken up immediately. Delhi Police cracked the case in 48 hours WION: Can you tell us something about the attack that we came to know of only years later and was not evident then? D Singh: Well! India realised that no matter how hard they battle with these terrorists and kill them in our own territory, we may continue with our losses in terms of precious human lives and seriously impair our psychology and in turn our will to fight. Thus, succumbing to Pakistani pressures and negotiating the Kashmir issue to their advantage. We realised after the Parliament attack followed by Operation Parakram that the conventional option may not be a viable option. We had to prevent the attacker much before the LoC and preferably much beyond in Pakistani-held territory itself. To that effect we did two things: firstly, we increased the pressure on the LoC by escalating artillery fire all across, making the proposition expensive to the Pakistanis both in terms of human and material resources. This forced General Musharraf to his knees literally begging for a ceasefire in 2003. Secondly, we fenced our Line of Control. This was the game changer. Pakistan is still trying to grapple with this challenge. Today we have an upper hand and we have that initiative. Violence levels have reduced drastically in our favour. Also, the surgical strikes conducted have literally turned the tables. What Pakistan endeavoured by staging an attack on Parliament, we have achieved far much more. Pakistani establishment fears our response. India has changed, and they have realised that well. WION: How do you think the terrorists managed to get in? What have we done to prevent such future attacks? RS Gupta: The terrorists were able to enter the Parliament House complex by photocopying a Parliament car-parking label. They had recced the area and watched the entry procedure. Parliament House security has since been reviewed, studied and strengthened. WION: What is the most memorable image of that attack which has stayed with you from the event? D Singh: Images of our CRPF jawans battling with these LeT / JeM terrorists with utmost bravery still linger on and remain totally clear in my memory. It was actually these images that conveyed a message that the terrorists sent by Pakistan who are religiously motivated under the ideology of Islam are in fact no-good fighters, rather they are cowards seen running petrified for cover once cornered.
