ISRO satellite launch: ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) has successfully launched INSAT-3DS, its latest satellite. The launch took place from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota near southern Indian city of Chennai. ISRO's GSLV-F14 rocket took INSAT-3DS into the space. INSAT-3DS will join the array of Indian satellites already in orbit around the Earth and will boost India's capability for enhanced meteorological observations. The satellite will monitor land and ocean surfaces for weather forecast and will also be useful for early warnings of natural disasters.

INSAT-3DS will join forces with INSAT-3D and INSAT-3DR which are already in orbit.

The INSAT-3DS mission is fully funded by India's Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).

Observations made by INSAT-3DS will be of great help for departments of MoES like India Meteorological Department (IMD), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).

Primary objectives of INSAT-3DS mission include monitoring Earth's surface and making observation of oceans and oceanic environments. The satellite will also provide vertical profile of meteorological parameters of Earth's atmosphere.

The satellite will also provide Data Collection and Data Dissemination capabilities from the Data Collection Platforms (DCPs). It will also come in handy for Satellite Aided Search and Rescue.

ISRO successfully launches INSAT-3DS satellite, adds another feather in its cap

With an Indian-built satellite GSAT-24 having formally commenced its operations, from around 36,500 km&nbsp;above the earth's surface, subscribers of India's Tata Play DTH Service would have the option to view 300 more television channels.

Prior to the operationalisation of GSAT-24, Tata Play&nbsp;(formerly Tata Sky) was able to broadcast only 600 channels, and that number would now increase to 900 channels.&nbsp;

Chairman and Managing Director, NSIL, D. Radhakrishnan said, “GSAT-24 has been the first Demand Driven communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL post space sector reforms. The GSAT-24 satellite is ready to usher in a new era of satellite television for India".

Built by ISRO's UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, the GSAT-24 satellite is the first demand-driven mission of NewSpace India Limited(NSIL), which is ISRO's commercial arm.

GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite, meant to cater to the requirement of Tata Play’s DTH application needs. NSIL, incorporated in March 2019, is a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Indian Government's Department of Space (DOS). The entire satellite capacity on-board GSAT-24 is leased to its committed customer Tata Play.

ISRO Chairman, Dr. S. Somanath said, “GSAT-24, a 4-tonne class communication satellite built by ISRO for providing DTH services, is fully operational at its maximum satellite capacity, following exhaustive in-orbit testing. This momentous achievement signifies a revolution in India’s telecommunications space, driven by cutting-edge indigenous technology. It serves as a tribute to our nation’s aerospace prowess and heralds India’s successful entry into the Demand Driven Mission segment.”

According to Tata Play, the increased bandwidth, after the inclusion of GSAT-24, will enable the DTH service to provide its users with an even sharper picture and sound quality, and an ability to carry 50 per cent more channels while becoming the largest satellite bandwidth provider among all DTH platforms.

Tata Play’s MD &amp; CEO Shri Harit Nagpal said, “Viewing experience has been Tata Play’s key priority. This collaboration with NSIL will provide our DTH subscribers with an even better video and audio quality and many more channels and services. It also strengthens our commitment to Linear TV in a country where approximately 140million homes are yet to buy their first TV”.

The GSAT-24 satellite was launched into orbit using a European Ariane-V rocket from their European Space Agency's Kourou Spaceport in French Guiana. The satellite was launched into orbit successfully on June 22nd, 2022.

After getting placed in orbit last mid-2022, various processes and technical assessments including on-orbit testing were carried out prior to operationalizing the satellite for broadcast operations. Meanwhile, the ground stations of Tata Play, that are meant to communicate with the satellite also were set up.&nbsp;

ISRO-built satellite to bring 300 more channels on Tata Play; include Andamans, Northeast in coverage

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is working on nearly 50 futuristic, innovative technologies that will cater to the country’s technological needs&nbsp;in the coming decades.

Some of the technologies include quantum communications, space debris mitigation technologies, robotic arms, interplanetary rovers etc. Top officials of the space agency enlisted these technologies at the Inaugural session of the ISRO’s Directorate of Technology Development and Innovation (DTDI) conclave.&nbsp;

Speaking at the event, Dr K. Sivan, chairman, ISRO, said that DTDI was formed as a dedicated Directorate at ISRO headquarters to sow the seeds of futuristic and disruptive technology for the space sector.

He added that the technologies were being developed based on the global trends and &nbsp;SWOT analysis of their possible applications. ISRO, the Indian industry and academia would be collaborating and investing their resources to realise these technologies, said Dr&nbsp;Sivan&nbsp;who also serves as secretary, department of space.

“Over the last three&nbsp;years, ISRO initiated 46 technological endeavours such as quantum communication, space-debris mitigation technologies like self-eating rockets, self-vanishing satellites and robotic arms to catch space debris,”&nbsp;Dr&nbsp;Sivan said. He elaborated that quantum communication and satellite-based quantum communication, quantum cryptography could provide unconditional data security in secure communications.&nbsp;

With space debris from destroyed satellites, overpopulation of space by defunct satellites and active ones, spent rocket stages being a major concern, there is a growing need for mitigating this challenge.

A global effort is underway to maximise the operations of re-usable rockets, enable in-space refuelling, servicing of satellites, minimising, collecting and removing space debris and&nbsp;develop materials that don’t pose a long threat to other space assets&nbsp;It is in that context that ISRO’s plan for self-eating rockets and self-vanishing satellites, robotic arms needs to be seen.&nbsp;

Quantum mechanics is a theory in physics that describes the physical properties of nature at the level of atoms and sub-atomic particles. This is different from classical physics that describes many aspects of nature at an ordinary (macroscopic) scale.&nbsp;

Conventionally, sensitive data is sent via cable or other means along with the digital keys needed to decode the information. This is sent via a stream of electrical or optical pulses that are representing 0s and 1s(bits). However, this is prone to hacking&nbsp;without the knowledge of the sender and receiver.&nbsp;

In quantum communication, particles (photons of light) are transmitted in qubits(quantum bits), which have both 0 and 1 value at the same time. So, if a hacker were to try and eavesdrop on it, they must measure these qubits, which leaves a detectable trace and alerts the sender and receiver. This is based on the principle that a quantum state cannot be measured without disturbing it. If qubits are disturbed, then both parties know it and can abandon the exchange.&nbsp;

On disruptive technologies that ISRO was working on, R. Umamaheswaran, scientific secretary, ISRO, mentioned quantum radars, low-temperature lithium-ion cells that can power sub-systems in sub-zero temperatures and space-based solar power.&nbsp;

He added that ISRO had created a ‘Vision 2030’, based on ideas received from its scientists and engineers.

It&nbsp;included “General purpose Humanoid robots, in-situ propellant production for interplanetary exploration, planetary rock sampling, intelligent space vehicle, robotic arm in space, spider rover,&nbsp; AI-enabled spacecraft and&nbsp;Lattice composite structure.”

On the status of these technologies, he said that few of them were in the feasibility study stages, whereas the development of some others had been initiated at the lab level.&nbsp;

ISRO will also be harnessing artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data analysis to make better use of data from satellites, in order to cater to the understanding of earth’s resources.

“We are looking at ensuring preparedness for handling celestial and anthropogenic challenges, developing AI-based models for on-board anomaly detection in spacecraft, Spatio-temporal&nbsp;weather prediction, groundwater level prediction, generation of land cover maps, AI-driven quality inspection and&nbsp;AI-driven agriculture,” Dr&nbsp;Umamaheshwaran added.&nbsp;

Via initiatives such as DTDI connect and DTDI extend, ISRO aims to unite technology developers from across the country with potential users to enable customized products that are ready-to-induct.

The spin-offs from such technological products are services are also expected to be of great utility to the country and its rapidly-growing advanced requirements.

To mark 50 years of India-Bangladesh ties and to motivate the next generation of scientific thinkers, the students of both countries will be jointly developing a satellite.

The Indian team led by SpaceKidz India would be imparting training to five students from the neighbouring country in the satellite building.&nbsp;The launch of this satellite is expected by June this year.&nbsp;

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this initiative was signed between SpaceKidz India and Global Law Thinkers Society, Bangladesh’s Global Youth Organization on Monday, January 25. Incidentally, this day also happened to be the eve of India’s Republic Day.&nbsp;

According to Dr Srimathy Kesan, Founder SpaceKidz India, this idea of collaboration in space came up after she heard the story of how India helped in the Bangladesh Liberation war from Gen. Jacob, who then served as the Chief of Staff of Indian Army’s Eastern Command.&nbsp;

“The beauty of coincidence is that Bangladeshi soldiers’ contingent marched today down the Rajpath ” she added.&nbsp;

According to the Russian Space Agency, India’s Cartosat 2F weighing over 700kg dangerously approached the Kanopus-V spacecraft at 01:49UTC, on Friday, November 27. In a tweet, Roscosmos has said that the minimum distance between both Russian and foreign satellite was 224 meters. Both the satellites are meant for earth’s remote sensing.&nbsp;

How significant and dangerous is this?&nbsp;

According to a source that spoke to WION on the condition of anonymity, 1 kilometre is an ideal distance between satellites in orbit, whereas 224 meter is scary and can be counted as a near miss. Generally, when two satellites are predicted (based on calculations) to make a close pass, a decision is taken to manoeuvre one of them away in advance (usually days ahead).&nbsp;

Given how space is getting increasingly crowded with satellites that are used for various purposes, it is said to be normal for agencies to manoeuvre one of their satellites every 3-4 weeks. It is notable that low Earth orbit (500-2000km) is the most congested, with satellites of various sizes — ranging from 10cm cubes to ones that are the size of a car or larger.&nbsp;

However, the decision to manoeuvre is not very easy. Especially, when the satellite is performing a strategic role that requires it to be at a particular spot. Because the manoeuvre would affect the schedule of the pre-planned operation of surveillance (in whatever form). In this case, Roscosmos has said that both are remote sensing satellites, which implies that they in all likelihood used for strategic purposes.&nbsp;

The space community has been divided over the prediction models for tracking satellites in orbit. The existing ones are the European Model, American model, Russian model, whereas the Indian model is under development. The reason that the space community hotly debates the efficiency of the models is that there are differences between the calculations made using each model.&nbsp;

Let’s assume, in this case, the Indian model said that the satellites would be 1km apart, whereas the Russian model would have predicted that they would be 500m apart. It is also highly likely that in reality, both models went wrong and the satellites get closer than the prediction showed. Hence, there is no single model that works accurately, as each one can provide a different result. Another factor that could impact prediction models in low earth orbits is the impact of the drag from the Earth's atmosphere.&nbsp;

Some interesting questions in this scenario are - how or why did the respective agencies allow the satellites to get this close? Were there predictions that both sides performed? Given the close Indo-Russian cooperation on space technology, did the agencies foresee this close shave and coordinate? &nbsp;

Most importantly, why would the Russian agency go public with this information, rather than discuss with ISRO officials. Or did both the agencies have critical strategic functions that required the satellites to remain exactly in their respective orbits, despite knowing that they would make a close pass.&nbsp;

Is it possible that the agencies wanted to allow a close pass and then take a call on any possible manoeuvre in future? &nbsp;

The real danger posed by a possible collision of satellites would be the debris of varying sizes scattered across space in all directions, in high-speeds with high potential of harming other satellites.&nbsp;

The last large collision of satellites happened in 2009, when a US commercial Iridium spacecraft hit a defunct Russian satellite over Siberia, producing thousands of pieces of debris.

As of January 2020, there are around 2,000 active satellites orbiting the earth. There are also more than 23,000 pieces of debris larger than 10cm (4inches) in orbit, according to NASA.

Indian ISRO satellite flew dangerously close to Russian sat, says Roscosmos

A US District Court on Friday asked&nbsp;the&nbsp;commercial arm of&nbsp;Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), that is,&nbsp;Antrix&nbsp;to pay $1.2 billion compensation to a Bengaluru-based start-up.

ISRO had&nbsp;cancelled a satellite deal with&nbsp;Devas Multimedia&nbsp;in January 2005.

As per the agreement, Antrix had agreed to build, launch and operate two satellites and to make available 70 MHz of S-band spectrum to Devas, which the latter planned to use to offer hybrid satellite and terrestrial communication services throughout India. 
The agreement was terminated by Antrix in February 2011. Over the next several years, Devas approached various legal avenues in India. This included the Supreme Court, which directed for a tribunal.

In his order dated October 27, Judge Thomas S Zilly, US District Judge, Western District of Washington, Seattle, ruled that Antrix Corporation pay a compensation of $562.5 million to Devas Multimedia Corporation and the related interest rate amounting to a total of $1.2 billion.

In its lawsuit filed in the US District Court, Western District of Washington in September 2018, Devas Multimedia said three separate international tribunals and nine different arbitrators have found the termination of the Devas-Antrix agreement to have been wrongful, with one of the tribunals describing it as ''conduct 'which shocks, or at least surprises, a sense of juridical propriety,'&nbsp;and another finding it to be ''a clear breach of simple good faith''&nbsp;by India.

Antrix, in November 2018, had sought the dismissal of the lawsuit citing jurisdictional issues.

The court, however, asserted that it had jurisdiction over the issue, but stayed the matter for one year and asked the two to file a joint status report by April 15, 2020.

On July 16, 2020, both Devas and Antrix filed the instant motion, a Joint Status Report in which they disputed whether the court should lift or extend the stay, and, if the latter, whether Antrix is required to post security.

Devas, according to submissions, has argued that the US court has jurisdiction over these cases, as Antrix engages in business in this district and across the United States.

Antrix and Spaceflight Industries, which is headquartered in Seattle have an agreement to provide satellite launch services using India's PSLV rocket.

Antrix and RBC Signals LLC, which is headquartered in Redmond, Washington have a worldwide agreement to provide space communications services to satellite operators.

Antrix in 2018 launched a satellite for Redmond, a Washington-based Planetary Resources.

Antrix agreed in 2015 to launch two satellites for Colorado-based PlanetiQ. Antrix is contracted with DigitalGlobe, which has headquarters in Colorado and other locations in Florida, Virginia and Washington to procure certain satellite data, which is then distributed by the Indian Space Research Organisation's National Remote Sensing Centre.

Devas said that after the initial signing of the agreement, the two companies performed in good faith for five years. Among other things, in May 2009, Dr Appanna Bhaskarnaryana, the Director of the Satellite Communications Programme Office of ISRO, spent four to five weeks in the US with Devas personnel meeting with Hughes Networks, Sirius XM SkyTerra, Qualcomm and ICO North America to understand the technologies used by, and operation of, hybrid satellite-terrestrial operators providing telecommunications services.

Devas subsequently conducted experimental trials in India (attended by Antrix officials, including the company's then-chairman), Chengdu and Beijing in China, and Stuttgart in Germany, which successfully demonstrated the hybrid satellite-terrestrial systems and end-user terminals that Devas had developed in conjunction with a global network of leading technology players such as Alcatel Lucent, it said.

On February 25, 2011, Antrix issued a termination notice to Devas, which among other things stated that the policy decision was of the central government, acting in its sovereign capacity in the event of force majeure, which was an occurrence on February 23, 2011.

''The scope and duration of the said decision cannot be anticipated. It is likely to be indefinite. It is not possible for Antrix to take any effective step to resume the obligations under the agreement,''&nbsp;Antrix said.

Devas disputed Antrix's repudiation of the agreement and sought to conduct discussions among senior management as contemplated by that agreement.

In June 2011, Devas commenced arbitration proceedings under the Rules of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce.

US court asks ISRO's Astrix to $1.2 billion compensation to Bengaluru start-up

After the successful launch of Cartosat 3 on November 27, ISRO is launching RISAT-2BR1 on Wednesday, an indigenous designed and developed, radar imaging, earth observation satellite, weighing 628kgs.&nbsp;RISAT-2BR1 will be placed in an orbit of 576 kms at an inclination of 37 degrees, from PSLV C48, (in its QL variant with 4 strap on motors). This is the landmark 50th mission of PSLV. &nbsp;

RISAT-2BR1 is a part of the RISAT series of X Band all-weather, all-terrain earth observation satellites in 2D/3D, with defence grade sensors, the first of the series was RISAT, made by IAI, equipped with TecSAR, in X band and launched in April 2009 due to the Mumbai 26/11 incident in 2008.&nbsp;

In May this year, ISRO had launched 615 kg RISAT-2B, on board the PSLV. The launch of RISAT-2B1 will be followed by another radar imaging satellite RISAT-2BR2.&nbsp;

RISAT-2BR1, is an X-band SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) with radial rib reflector 3.6-metre mesh antenna. RISAT-2BR1 has a powerful 0.35m resolution, which means that two objects separated by 0.35m distance can be distinctly identified.&nbsp;

It will provide multi-spectral detailed images of Earth's surface in 2D/3D and shall enhance the surveillance capabilities of the armed forces, for land and maritime border security. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The orbit of RISAT-2BR1, which is an inclined 37 degrees to the equator, will allow for greater revisit rates on the area of interest in the Indian subcontinent. This elevation does not enable global surveillance. Rather, the satellite's gaze will be fixed on the Indian subcontinent.&nbsp;

The X Band SAR enables the satellite to provide, continuous all-weather, all-terrain earth observation and imagery, cutting through the clouds and darkness, which is critical for surveillance and intelligence for the armed forces for prevention of any hostile activity including infiltrations and also provide inputs for the planning of strategic operations.&nbsp;

Apart from defence applications, this satellite will also support agriculture, forestry, disaster management.&nbsp;

RISAT-2BR1: India's newest 'eye in the sky' will boost nation's surveillance capabilities

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Monday posted pictures of the journey of India`s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C47 on their official Twitter handle.

The launch of PSLV-C47 carrying Cartosat-3 which was scheduled for November 25 at 0928 hours, has been rescheduled for November 27 at 0928 hours from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.

ISRO will launch the Cartosat-3 and 13 Nanosatellites of the US on the rescheduled date from the second launch pad of the space centre.

PSLV-C47 will launch Cartosat-3 and 13 commercial nanosatellites into the Sun-synchronous orbit.Cartosat-3 satellite is a third-generation agile advanced satellite having high-resolution imaging capability.

The satellite will be placed in an orbit of 509 km at an inclination of 97.5 degrees.PSLV-C47 will also carry 13 commercial nanosatellites from the United States of America as part of a commercial arrangement with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), Department of Space.&nbsp;

ISRO posts pictures of PSLV-C47 ahead of launch

India&#39;s latest remote sensing satellite, Resourcesat-2A, was today successfully launched by ISRO&#39;s workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle from the launch pad at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

Resourcesat-2A, intended for resource monitoring, is a follow on mission to Resourcesat-1 and Resourcesat-2, launched in 2003 and 2011 respectively. It is intended to continue the remote sensing data services to global users provided by Resourcesat-1 and 2.

&quot;PSLV-C36 successfully launches Resourcesat-2A,&quot; ISRO said.

Describing it as a &quot;successful&quot; launch, ISRO Chairman A S Kiran Kumar said it is going to provide continuity to &quot;our three tier imaging data, which will be extremely useful for various applications of land and water.&quot;

He said &quot;it has been a perfect launch.&quot;

&quot;I wish to congratulate the entire ISRO team for the wonderful job they have done and for putting one more operational satellite into orbit,&quot; Kumar said.

PSLV-C36, the 38th flight of PSLV, blasted off at 10:25 hours from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota and injected Resourcesat-2A into the orbit in a flawless flight lasting about 18 minutes.

The 1,235-kg Resourcesat-2A was placed in an 817-km polar Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO), ISRO said.

In this flight, the &#39;XL&#39; version of PSLV with six solid strap-on motors was used.

Resourcesat-2A carries three payloads which are similar to those of Resourcesat-1 and 2.

They include a high resolution Linear Imaging Self Scanner (LISS-4) camera operating in three spectral bands in the Visible and Near Infrared Region (VNIR), medium resolution LISS-3 camera operating in three-spectral bands in VNIR and one in Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) band, and coarse resolution Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS) camera operating in three spectral bands in VNIR and one band in SWIR, with specified spatial resolutions, ISRO said.

ISRO said that data sent by Resourcesat-2A would be useful for agricultural applications like crop area and crop production estimation, drought monitoring, soil mapping, cropping system analysis and farm advisories generation. 
The mission life of Resourcesat-2A is five years.

The satellite was earlier planned for launch on November 28.

ISRO said like its predecessors Resourcesat-1 and 2, Resourcesat-2A has a unique 3-tier imaging system with Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS), Linear Imaging Self Scanner-3 (LISS-3) and Linear Imaging Self Scanner-4 (LISS-4) cameras.

AWiFS provides images with a sampling of 56 metres, a swath of 740 km and a revisit of five days whereas the LISS-3 provides 23.5 metre sampled images with 141 km swath and a repeativity of 24 days, it said LISS-4 provides 5.8 metre sampled images with 70 km swath and a revisit of five days.

Resourcesat-2A also carries two Solid State Recorders with a capacity of 200 Giga Bits each to store images taken by its cameras, which can be read out later to ground stations.

The total number of satellites launched by PSLV, including today&#39;s Resourcesat-2A has now reached 122, of which 43 are Indian and the remaining 79 are from abroad.&nbsp;
